The “Große Göldenitzer Moor” near Rostock (FRG) - Changes in use and vegetation in the last 200 years. Part II: The industrial period of intensive use (1950 – 1992)

Abstract

Using aerial photography and mapping of the vegetation, landforms, remnant peats and hydrology, the effects of intensive peat cutting in the Göldenitzer Moor are shown and discussed. Especially the effects of black peat cutting by milling-machines create difficulties for subsequent usage. The ecological value of the bog lies in its ecologic niche diversity and the high percentage of endangered species in the fauna and flora. However, most of the species are not endemic. Suggestions are made for envrronmentally acceptable useage of the bog.
