May we speak of Mongol art?<br />Mongol images and monasteries from the 16th to the early 20th century<br />Isabelle Charleux<br /><br />This paper addresses the twin issues of the status and the “nationality” of artists and artisans in traditional Mongol society, especially in the religious sphere. In particular, it examines the role of foreign artisans in the religious production, and therefore raises the question of the very existence of a purely Mongol religious art.<br />The 16th century Buddhist revival and the subsequent rapid growth of the Mongol religious institution created a new demand for temples, images, paintings, and other religious paraphernalia....
