Abstract
In 1719 Robinson Crusoe was published by Daniel Defoe and has since been interpreted in numerous ways. In this project we seek to investigate certain group specific cultural aspects in England in the period 1651-1719 through the novel of Defoe. Through our methodological approach of cultural discourse, the analysis allows for insights and a deeper understanding of the english entrepreneurial class of the 17th century. On the one hand the analysis is focused on the structural and cultural changes in 17th century England, on the other, on how Crusoe encounters other cultures and ultimately sparks a series of reflections upon his own society.
