Das Torfmuseum des Landkreises Hannover in Neustadt a. Rbge.

Abstract

The Peat Museum at Neustadt originates from the scientific collection of the former Peat Institute at Hannover. That institute had been founded in 1911 to do research on the industrial utilization of peat. The original Peat Museum, which was founded in 1980, was situated in several small rooms in the attic storey of Landestrost Castle, a 16th century building. When the whole castle was being renovated in the 19808, the museum's rooms were enlarged and modernized. A new concept was worked out for the exhibition, which was re-opened to the public in I991. The basic idea now is to show the history of the value of peatbogs to man, which has changed during the last three hundred years from worthless wasteland to land of settlement and deposit of raw material to nature reserve.
