On the history of the peat industry in Germany: IV. The STRENGE family - Peat pioneers from Elisabethfehn

The article outlines the history of the STRENGE family, peat pioneers of Elisabethfehn (Oldenburg). Practically a brand, STRENGE enjoys a world-wide reputation as mechanical peat production innovator. As early as on April l7, 1894, STRENGE procured patent No. DRP 79798 for the invention of its first ,,automatic peat excavator“ with a reciprocating bucket boom. Thus, an important step had been taken towards mechanical fuel peat production. To these days, STRENGE fuel peat excavators are in widespread use for the production of sod peat from black peat to provide power plants with material and for production of activated carbon. On this occasion of the 10th anniversary of Elisabethfehn’s Mire and Fen Cultivation Museum in 1996, the history and influence of this family, handed down to its fourth generation, was illustrated in a commemorative lecture.

Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird die Geschichte der Familie STRENGE, Torfpioniere aus Elisabethfehn (Oldenburg), dargestellt. Der Name STRENGE ist weltweit eng mit der maschinellen Brenntorfgewinnung verbunden. Bereits am 17.4.1894 erhielt STRENGE für seinen ersten „selbsttätigen Torfbagger“ mit einer hin- und hergehenden Eimerleiter das Patent DRP 79798. Damit hatte er einen wichtigen Schritt zur maschinellen Brenntorfgewinnung getan. Auch heute noch sind Brenntorfbagger des Systems STRENGE bei der Gewinnung von Sodentorf aus Schwarztorf für die Versorgung von Kraftwerken und zur Herstellung von Aktivkohle im Einsatz. Anläßlich des 10-jährigen Bestehens des Moor- und Fehnmuseums Elisabethfehn im Jahr 1996 wurde das Wirken dieser Familie, die inzwischen in der vierten Generation im Torf tätig ist, in einem Festvortrag aufgezeigt.
