The author draws on both examples from literature and various types of narratives disseminated through the new media. Referring to the various ways of defi ning the term and then using it in various types of discourses, he examines its transformation from an archetype (discussing, first of all, the evolution in the way of seeing highlanders as the first inhabitants of the mountains and the links between this notion, as well as the term “mountain man” and its use with regard to people visiting the mountains disinterestedly in search of aesthetic or other experiences) to a stereotype of the “mountain man” strongly rooted in the modern collective consciousness and imagination. An important context for the present analysis is provided by the history of European imperialism and colonialism. The article features a number of examples from writings by Polish and foreign authors.

This paper presents a novel semantic analysis of unit names (like pound and meter) and gradable adjectives (like tall, short and happy), inspired by measurement theory (Krantz et al. In Foundations of measurement: Additive and Polynomial Representations, 1971). Based on measurement theory’s four-way typology of measures, I claim that different adjectives are associated with different types of measures whose special characteristics, together with features of the relations denoted by unit names, explain the puzzling limited distribution of measure phrases, as well as unit-based comparisons between predicates (as in the table is longer than it is wide). All considered, my analyses support the view that the grammar of natural languages is sensitive to features of measurement theory.

Bertaud; Damian Walczyk; Malgorzata Sowinska; Dirk Wolansky; Bernd Tillack; Gunter Schoof; Valery Stikanov; Christian Wenger; Sebastian Thiess; Thomas Schroeder; Christian Walczyk; The Ti/HfO2/TiN-based system is a very promising candidate for Resistance change Random Access Memory (RRAM). By combining material science studies and integration in a Si CMOS technology, we succeeded to give quantitative insight in the resistive switching mechanism and to process a 4 kbit array with 1T1R RRAM devices. In particular, in-operando hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy allows to describe the resistive switching mechanism by a push-pull model of oxygen vacancies as a function of voltage polarity. Moreover, the characterization of integrated 600×600 nm2 TiN/Ti/HfO2/TiN 1T1R devices in the pulse-induced mode and the recent realization of a 4 kbit memory array have demonstrated promising performance for embedded non-volatile memory applications.

Cultural property offers a significant yet ambiguous example of the development of global regulatory regimes beyond the State. On the one hand, traditional international law instruments do not seem to ensure an adequate level of protection for cultural heritage; securing such protection requires procedures, norms, and standards produced by global institutions, both public (such as UNESCO) and private (such as the International Council of Museums). On the other hand, a comprehensive global regulatory regime to complement the law of cultural property is still to be achieved. Instead, more regimes are being established, depending on the kind of properties and public interests at stake. Moreover, the huge cultural bias that dominates the debate about cultural property accentuates the “clash of civilizations” that already underlies the debate about global governance. The analysis of the relationship between globalization and cultural property, therefore, sheds light on broader global governance trends and helps highlight the points of weakness and strength in the adoption of administrative law techniques at the global level.

This article examines the reason why urban women should have been more ready to use divorce, and suggests that demographic and economic changes had so modified the traditional family economy that the corporate economic character of the French family had been undermined. The city offered women facilities for work and accommodation outside the family context, which were not offered in rural areas. The use of divorce may be seen as part of a broad process of individualization in France in the later eighteenth century, in which material changes in family life were reflected in changed views as to the relationship between the individual and the family Phillips Roderick G. Le divorce en France à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. In: Annales. Économies, Sociétés, Civilisations. 34ᵉ année, N. 2, 1979. pp. 385-398.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were regarded as anthropogenic organic carbon (OC) source, and be coupled with the natural carbon (C) and nutrient biogeochemical cycling in ecosystems. The objective of this work was to review the current literature and explore potential coupling processes and mechanisms between POPs and biogeochemical cycles of C and nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems induced by global warming.
