    Abstract 3D seismic reflection data are used to investigate the processes which have led to the development of amplitude anomalies on reflectors in the faulted, Cenozoic overburden on the Laminaria High, Northwest Shelf of Australia. Amplitude and root mean square (RMS) attributes are mapped on two reflectors (seabed and horizon H9) that were deposited synchronous with fault activity and are located adjacent to predominantly ENE-WSW striking fault traces. On the seabed, the main anomaly is located on the up-dip side of the fault trace, and is elongated parallel to the local time structure contours. These observations are consistent with the anomalies having developed in response to structurally-controlled fluid seepage along, and up-dip migration away from the fault trace. The other amplitude anomalies associated with the H9 reflector are also located adjacent to fault traces but are discordant to the local time structure contours. The latter observation is inconsistent with the migration of buoyant fluid at the present day; instead, it suggests that the anomalies may be due to cemented hardgrounds that formed due to seepage when the faults intersected the palaeo-seafloor but were subsequently buried and deformed during ongoing sedimentation and fault growth/linkage. Prominent anomalies mapped on reflectors within the pre-faulting succession (H10) are located adjacent to, and are elongated along, sub-seismic scale, NW-SE striking faults or, as in the case of a deeper horizon (H13) show no clear relationship with the faults. We conclude that there is no relationship between the occurrence of anomalies and the magnitude of throw, or the duration of activity, along the Cenozoic faults. The results suggest that whilst fluid seepage and cementation were structurally-controlled, these processes were also influenced by permeability variations that cannot be resolved by seismic interpretation methods.

    In the late eighteenth century the principle of accommodation became so closely associated with the historical-critical approach of Johann Salomo Semler (1725–1791), a prominent theologian at the University of Halle, that he has on occasion been deemed its originator. As some scholars have, however, noted, accommodation as a principle of scriptural hermeneutics has a far longer history, extending back to the patristic writings. What by contrast has eluded closer investigation is the affinity that this principle exhibits to notions of deception. Nor has much consideration been given to the manner in which accommodation as an interpretative scheme has on occasion inspired accommodation as a form of strategic action. This article uses the opportunity provided by Semler in his interaction with a number of other figures associated with the late Enlightenment in Protestant Germany to explore these neglected aspects of accommodation.

    The Late Neolithic of southeast Hungary is known almost exclusively from excavations of large settlement mounds, or tells. Geochemical analyses of sediments collected from boreholes at small, flat Late Neolithic and Early Copper Age settlements in Hungary's Koros River basin provide data necessary to interpret the spatial organization of small settlements for the first time in this region. Principal Components Analysis of multi-element data produced a workable number of variables. Spatial analyses of these components via interpolation in ArcGIS 9 identified specific task areas, and when combined with sediment characterizations, phosphate ‘spot-tests’ and pH, suggest long-term cultural traditions in the location of activity zones within small farmsteads. The results demonstrate the usefulness of multi-element geochemistry as an intra-site prospection method.

    This report summarizes the objectives and evaluation of the SemEval 2015 task on the sentiment analysis of figurative language on Twitter (Task 11). This is the first sentiment analysis task wholly dedicated to analyzing figurative language on Twitter. Specifically, three broad classes of figurative language are considered: irony, sarcasm and metaphor. Gold standard sets of 8000 training tweets and 4000 test tweets were annotated using workers on the crowdsourcing platform CrowdFlower. Participating systems were required to provide a fine-grained sentiment score on an 11-point scale (-5 to +5, including 0 for neutral intent) for each tweet, and systems were evaluated against the gold standard using both a Cosinesimilarity and a Mean-Squared-Error measure.

    Abstract Investigating plants used for building and craft activities is important for understanding how environments surrounding archaeological settlements were exploited, as well as for considering the social practices involved in the creation and use of plant objects. Evidence for such plant uses has been observed at many Near Eastern Neolithic sites but not widely discussed. Survival may occur in a number of ways, including as impressions in clay, and as charred or desiccated macroremains. Another, less well-known, way in which plant artifacts can be found is as silica skeletons (phytoliths). Formed by the in situ decay of plants, their analysis may tell us about taxa exploited, and locations in which plant artifacts were used or discarded. At Catalhoyuk, an abundance of silicified traces of plants used in building materials and for craft activities survive, and are found in domestic and burial contexts. Their analysis demonstrates the routine use of wild plants, especially from wetland areas, for basketry (mats, baskets and cordage) and construction, as well as the secondary use of cereal husk chaff in certain types of building materials. The numerous finds suggest that plant-based containers played an important role as an artifactual class, even after the adoption of early pottery.

    Between the sixth and eighth centuriesad, the practice of furnished burial was widely abandoned in favour of a much more standardized, unfurnished rite. This article examines that transition by considering the personhood and agency of the corpse, the different ways bonds of possession can form between people and objects, and what happens to those bonds at death. By analysing changing grave good use across western Europe, combined with an in-depth analysis of the Alamannic cemetery of Pleidelsheim, and historical evidence for perceptions of the corpse, the author argues that the change in grave good use marks a fundamental change in the perception of corpses.

    Abstract Text simplification and text summarisation are related, but different sub-tasks in Natural Language Generation. Whereas summarisation attempts to reduce the length of a document, whilst keeping the original meaning, simplification attempts to reduce the complexity of a document. In this work, we combine both tasks of summarisation and simplification using a novel hybrid architecture of abstractive and extractive summarisation called HTSS. We extend the well-known pointer generator model for the combined task of summarisation and simplification. We have collected our parallel corpus from the simplified summaries written by domain experts published on the science news website EurekaAlert ( www.eurekalert.org ). Our results show that our proposed HTSS model outperforms neural text simplification (NTS) on SARI score and abstractive text summarisation (ATS) on the ROUGE score. We further introduce a new metric (CSS1) which combines SARI and Rouge and demonstrates that our proposed HTSS model outperforms NTS and ATS on the joint task of simplification and summarisation by 38.94% and 53.40%, respectively.     New model growth curves for the continental crust based upon Hf isotopes in zircon suggest that large volumes of felsic continental crust were present in the Hadean and early Archean. These models sit uncomfortably with estimates of the volume of ancient crust preserved today and imply that the large volumes of crust that were created early in Earth history are now lost. However, this paper argues that there is no evidence from modern mantle geochemistry that very large volumes of early continental crust have been recycled into the mantle. In contrast, significant volumes of Archean crust may have been reworked into younger crust, although there is no evidence that this process took place in the early Archean and Hadean. Geological evidence from the detrital-zircon record does not show evidence for large volumes of very early felsic crust, rather, geochemical proxies for Eo-Archean and Hadean crust strongly suggest that the earliest crusts on Earth, some of which may have been subaerial, were mafic. A lack of very early felsic crust on Earth calls for a reevaluation of current crustal growth curves and geodynamic models for the start of plate tectonics, the role of supercontinents in early continent formation, and the role of the subcontinental lithosphere in continent preservation. The earliest felsic rocks on Earth may have taken the form of oceanic plagiogranites or ocean-island potassic granites as found in the modern.

    Abstract 3D seismic reflection data are used to investigate the processes which have led to the development of amplitude anomalies on reflectors in the faulted, Cenozoic overburden on the Laminaria High, Northwest Shelf of Australia. Amplitude and root mean square (RMS) attributes are mapped on two reflectors (seabed and horizon H9) that were deposited synchronous with fault activity and are located adjacent to predominantly ENE-WSW striking fault traces. On the seabed, the main anomaly is located on the up-dip side of the fault trace, and is elongated parallel to the local time structure contours. These observations are consistent with the anomalies having developed in response to structurally-controlled fluid seepage along, and up-dip migration away from the fault trace. The other amplitude anomalies associated with the H9 reflector are also located adjacent to fault traces but are discordant to the local time structure contours. The latter observation is inconsistent with the migration of buoyant fluid at the present day; instead, it suggests that the anomalies may be due to cemented hardgrounds that formed due to seepage when the faults intersected the palaeo-seafloor but were subsequently buried and deformed during ongoing sedimentation and fault growth/linkage. Prominent anomalies mapped on reflectors within the pre-faulting succession (H10) are located adjacent to, and are elongated along, sub-seismic scale, NW-SE striking faults or, as in the case of a deeper horizon (H13) show no clear relationship with the faults. We conclude that there is no relationship between the occurrence of anomalies and the magnitude of throw, or the duration of activity, along the Cenozoic faults. The results suggest that whilst fluid seepage and cementation were structurally-controlled, these processes were also influenced by permeability variations that cannot be resolved by seismic interpretation methods.

    In the late eighteenth century the principle of accommodation became so closely associated with the historical-critical approach of Johann Salomo Semler (1725–1791), a prominent theologian at the University of Halle, that he has on occasion been deemed its originator. As some scholars have, however, noted, accommodation as a principle of scriptural hermeneutics has a far longer history, extending back to the patristic writings. What by contrast has eluded closer investigation is the affinity that this principle exhibits to notions of deception. Nor has much consideration been given to the manner in which accommodation as an interpretative scheme has on occasion inspired accommodation as a form of strategic action. This article uses the opportunity provided by Semler in his interaction with a number of other figures associated with the late Enlightenment in Protestant Germany to explore these neglected aspects of accommodation.

    The Late Neolithic of southeast Hungary is known almost exclusively from excavations of large settlement mounds, or tells. Geochemical analyses of sediments collected from boreholes at small, flat Late Neolithic and Early Copper Age settlements in Hungary's Koros River basin provide data necessary to interpret the spatial organization of small settlements for the first time in this region. Principal Components Analysis of multi-element data produced a workable number of variables. Spatial analyses of these components via interpolation in ArcGIS 9 identified specific task areas, and when combined with sediment characterizations, phosphate ‘spot-tests’ and pH, suggest long-term cultural traditions in the location of activity zones within small farmsteads. The results demonstrate the usefulness of multi-element geochemistry as an intra-site prospection method.

    This report summarizes the objectives and evaluation of the SemEval 2015 task on the sentiment analysis of figurative language on Twitter (Task 11). This is the first sentiment analysis task wholly dedicated to analyzing figurative language on Twitter. Specifically, three broad classes of figurative language are considered: irony, sarcasm and metaphor. Gold standard sets of 8000 training tweets and 4000 test tweets were annotated using workers on the crowdsourcing platform CrowdFlower. Participating systems were required to provide a fine-grained sentiment score on an 11-point scale (-5 to +5, including 0 for neutral intent) for each tweet, and systems were evaluated against the gold standard using both a Cosinesimilarity and a Mean-Squared-Error measure.
