    STAR measurements of v1 for identified particles for Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV are presented. A negative v1 slope is observed for pions, protons, antiprotons and kaons (K0S) in 10-70% central collisions. For pion v1 slope, the comparison between the current result and available models (RQMD, UrQMD, AMPT, QGSM and hydro model with a tilted source) is made. In 5-30% central collisions, surprisingly sizable difference between v1 of protons and antiprotons is observed. The centrality and energy dependence of proton v1 are also presented. The charged hadron v1 for Cu+Cu collisions at = 22.4 GeV is measured and compared with results obtained previously.

    In the present paper we study thin films from poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMAA/PEO) copolymers of different composition and structure in order to implement them as sensitive media for optical indicators for humidity. PDMAA/PEO di- and triblock copolymers were synthesized via redox polymerization in aqueous media. Thin films were deposited on silicon substrates by spin coating method using polymers solutions with appropriate concentrations. Refractive index, extinction coefficient and thickness of the films are calculated from reflectance spectra of the films deposited on silicon substrates using non-linear curve fitting method. Sensing properties of the films were tested by films exposure to different humidity levels followed by in-situ monitoring of the changes in the optical properties. The influence of the polymer structure and postdeposition annealing on the optical and sensing properties of the films was investigated. The potential application of selected polymers for optical sensing of humidity were demonstrated and discussed.

    The H-mode pedestal remains a critical subject for magnetic fusion energy research. Recent experimental efforts to characterize the edge pedestal, for tests of pedestal models now under development, are summarized in this report. The pedestal transport is characterized by the profiles and energy and particle fluxes through both the electron and ion channels. The flux measurements are made difficult by the short scale lengths of the pedestal and the difficulty of measuring the neutral ionization source within the pedestal. Recent results on pedestal scaling with a number of parameters are also summarized. Measurements of the pedestal scaling with the ion gyroradius, global beta, input power, shape, critical gradients, neutral density, aspect ratio, rotation, toroidal ripple and the toroidal field direction are presented. These measurements provide a strong test for emerging pedestal models as well as improve confidence of extrapolating existing experiments towards future devices. Recent work on the scaling of the H-mode power threshold is also presented.

    The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment (KATRIN) will perform a direct, kinematics-based measurement of the neutrino mass with a sensitivity of 200 meV (90 % C. L.), which will be reached after 3 years of measurement time. The neutrino mass is obtained by investigating the shape of the energy spectrum of tritium β-decay electrons close to the endpoint at 18.6 keV with a spectrometer of MAC-E filter type. This contribution reviews the current status of the tritium source cryostat and magnet system which is currently in its first cool-down phase. Furthermore, the next steps of the comprehensive pre-tritium measurement programme to characterise the apparatus and investigate important systematics are outlined.     In this talk we show that any spherically symmetric spacetime admits locally a maximal spacelike slicing. The above condition is reduced to solve a decoupled system of first order quasi-linear partial differential equations. The solution may be accomplished analytical or numerically.     This paper describes a system for ultrasonic wave attenuation measurements which is based on pseudo-random binary codes as transmission signals combined with on-the-fly correlation for received signal detection. The apparatus can receive signals in the nanovolt range against a noise background in the order of hundreds of microvolts and an analogue to digital convertor (ADC) bit-step also in the order of hundreds of microvolts. Very high signal to noise ratios (SNRs) are achieved without recourse to coherent averaging with its associated requirement for high sampling times. The system works by a process of dithering – in which very low amplitude received signals enter the dynamic range of the ADC by 'riding' on electronic noise at the system input. The amplitude of this 'useful noise' has to be chosen with care for an optimised design. The process of optimisation is explained on the basis of classical information theory and is achieved through a simple noise model. The performance of the system is examined for different transmitted code lengths and gain settings in the receiver chain. Experimental results are shown to verify the expected operation when the system is applied to a very highly attenuating material – an aerated slurry.

    Service Availability Monitoring (SAM) is a well-established monitoring framework that performs regular measurements of the core site services and reports the corresponding availability and reliability of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) infrastructure. One of the existing extensions of SAM is Site Wide Area Testing (SWAT), which gathers monitoring information from the worker nodes via instrumented jobs. This generates quite a lot of monitoring data to process, as there are several data points for every job and several million jobs are executed every day. The recent uptake of non-relational databases opens a new paradigm in the large-scale storage and distributed processing of systems with heavy read-write workloads. For SAM this brings new possibilities to improve its model, from performing aggregation of measurements to storing raw data and subsequent re-processing. Both SAM and SWAT are currently tuned to run at top performance, reaching some of the limits in storage and processing power of their existing Oracle relational database. We investigated the usability and performance of non-relational storage together with its distributed data processing capabilities. For this, several popular systems have been compared. In this contribution we describe our investigation of the existing non-relational databases suited for monitoring systems covering Cassandra, HBase and MongoDB. Further, we present our experiences in data modeling and prototyping map-reduce algorithms focusing on the extension of the already existing availability and reliability computations. Finally, possible future directions in this area are discussed, analyzing the current deficiencies of the existing Grid monitoring systems and proposing solutions to leverage the benefits of the non-relational databases to get more scalable and flexible frameworks.

    We present progress towards a measurement of the quantity δαHad(5)(mZ2), which represents the variation in the value of the electromagnetic coupling constant α between q2 = 0 and mZ2 due to the effects of the 5 lightest quark flavors. This quantity is one of the leading uncertainties in the global electroweak fits performed at the Z pole, and thus on the indirect determination of the Higgs boson mass. We obtain this quantity from an integral of the cross section for e+e− → qγ, where the photon originates from initial-state radiation (ISR).

    Preface These proceedings arose from the 12th International Workshop on Slow Positron Beam Techniques (SLOPOS12), which was held on Magnetic Island, North Queensland, Australia, between 1–6th August 2010. Meetings in the SLOPOS series are held (roughly) every three years and have now been held on (almost) all continents, indicating the truly international nature of the field. SLOPOS12 marked the second time that the Workshop had been held in the southern hemisphere, and the first time in Australia. SLOPOS12 attracted 122 delegates from 16 countries. Most encouraging was the attendance of 28 student delegates, and that about half of the overall delegates were early career researchers – a good sign for the future of our field. We also enjoyed the company of more than a dozen partners and families of delegates. In a slight departure from previous SLOPOS meetings, the International Advisory Committee approved a broader scope of scientific topics for inclusion in the program for the 2010 Workshop. This broader scope was intended to capture the applications of positrons in atomic, molecular and biomedical areas and was encapsulated in the byeline for SLOPOS–12: The 12th International Workshop on Slow Positron Beam Techniques for Solids, Surfaces, Atoms and Molecules. The scientific and social program for the meeting ran over 6 days with delegates gathering on Sunday August 1st and departing on August 6th. The scientific program included plenary, invited, contributed and student lectures, the latter being the subject of a student prize. In all there were 53 oral presentations during the week. There were also two poster sessions, with 63 posters exhibited, and a prize was awarded for the best poster by a student delegate. The standard of the student presentations, both oral and posters, was outstanding, so much so that the judging panel recommended an additional number of prizes be awarded. Topics that were the focus of invited presentations and contributed papers at SLOPOS–12 included: Positron Interactions with Surfaces Positron Beam and Detector Technology Positron Interactions with Atoms and Molecules Positronium Science Defects and Vacancies in Materials Porosity and Open Volume in Materials Antimatter in Biomedical Science Anti-hydrogen Studies Positron Transport Annihilation On a sad note, delegates paid tribute to the contributions of one of our colleagues, Chris Beling, who tragically passed away shortly before the meeting. Chris' contributions to positron science and to the education of young scientists were noted in a number of the invited presentations. It is an honour for our community to begin these proceedings with a short tribute to Chris' life by Professor Paul Coleman. The Workshop could not have occurred without the generous support of our sponsors: The ARC Centre for Antimatter–Matter Studies, The Australian National University, Flinders University, James Cook University, The Institute of Physics (UK) and the Australian Government's Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.     We consider a Potts model on a Bethe lattice with competing nearest-neighbour J and next-nearest-neighbour interactions Jp. The phase diagram of this model was studied by Ganikhodjaev et al. In this paper we investigate the problem of phase transition for the considered model and show that for some parameter values of the model there is phase transition.

    STAR measurements of v1 for identified particles for Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV are presented. A negative v1 slope is observed for pions, protons, antiprotons and kaons (K0S) in 10-70% central collisions. For pion v1 slope, the comparison between the current result and available models (RQMD, UrQMD, AMPT, QGSM and hydro model with a tilted source) is made. In 5-30% central collisions, surprisingly sizable difference between v1 of protons and antiprotons is observed. The centrality and energy dependence of proton v1 are also presented. The charged hadron v1 for Cu+Cu collisions at = 22.4 GeV is measured and compared with results obtained previously.

    In the present paper we study thin films from poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMAA/PEO) copolymers of different composition and structure in order to implement them as sensitive media for optical indicators for humidity. PDMAA/PEO di- and triblock copolymers were synthesized via redox polymerization in aqueous media. Thin films were deposited on silicon substrates by spin coating method using polymers solutions with appropriate concentrations. Refractive index, extinction coefficient and thickness of the films are calculated from reflectance spectra of the films deposited on silicon substrates using non-linear curve fitting method. Sensing properties of the films were tested by films exposure to different humidity levels followed by in-situ monitoring of the changes in the optical properties. The influence of the polymer structure and postdeposition annealing on the optical and sensing properties of the films was investigated. The potential application of selected polymers for optical sensing of humidity were demonstrated and discussed.

    The H-mode pedestal remains a critical subject for magnetic fusion energy research. Recent experimental efforts to characterize the edge pedestal, for tests of pedestal models now under development, are summarized in this report. The pedestal transport is characterized by the profiles and energy and particle fluxes through both the electron and ion channels. The flux measurements are made difficult by the short scale lengths of the pedestal and the difficulty of measuring the neutral ionization source within the pedestal. Recent results on pedestal scaling with a number of parameters are also summarized. Measurements of the pedestal scaling with the ion gyroradius, global beta, input power, shape, critical gradients, neutral density, aspect ratio, rotation, toroidal ripple and the toroidal field direction are presented. These measurements provide a strong test for emerging pedestal models as well as improve confidence of extrapolating existing experiments towards future devices. Recent work on the scaling of the H-mode power threshold is also presented.

    The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment (KATRIN) will perform a direct, kinematics-based measurement of the neutrino mass with a sensitivity of 200 meV (90 % C. L.), which will be reached after 3 years of measurement time. The neutrino mass is obtained by investigating the shape of the energy spectrum of tritium β-decay electrons close to the endpoint at 18.6 keV with a spectrometer of MAC-E filter type. This contribution reviews the current status of the tritium source cryostat and magnet system which is currently in its first cool-down phase. Furthermore, the next steps of the comprehensive pre-tritium measurement programme to characterise the apparatus and investigate important systematics are outlined.     In this talk we show that any spherically symmetric spacetime admits locally a maximal spacelike slicing. The above condition is reduced to solve a decoupled system of first order quasi-linear partial differential equations. The solution may be accomplished analytical or numerically.
