    In this plenary talk delivered at the DISCRETE 2014 conference in London, I briefly summarize the ideas behind and attractive properties of the Galileon field theories, and describe a broad class of scalar field theories that share these properties. After describing how Galileons arise, and commenting on their fascinating properties, in the latter half of the talk I focus on novel ways of constructing Galileon-like theories, using both the probe brane construction, and the coset construction.     The rho and omega meson self-energy at finite temperature and baryon density have been analysed for an exhaustive set of mesonic and baryonic loops in the real time formulation of thermal field theory. The large enhancement of spectral strength below the nominal rho mass is seen to cause a substantial enhancement in dilepton pair yield in this mass region. The integrated yield after space-time evolution using relativistic hydrodynamics with quark gluon plasma in the initial state leads to a very good agreement with the experimental data from In-In collisions obtained by the NA60 collaboration.     We review the main features of the Weyl-Wigner formulation of noncommutative quantum mechanics. In particular, we present a $\star$-product and a Moyal bracket suitable for this theory as well as the concept of noncommutative Wigner function. The properties of these quasi-distributions are discussed as well as their relation to the sets of ordinary Wigner functions and positive Liouville probability densities. Based on these notions we propose criteria for assessing whether a commutative regime has emerged in the realm of noncommutative quantum mechanics. To induce this noncommutative-commutative transition, we couple a particle to an external bath of oscillators.     Located between modern-day South Africa and Tanzania, both of which have well-known and extensive Stone Age records, Mozambique's Stone Age sequence remains largely unknown in the broader context of African Pleistocene prehistory. Such lack of data occurs despite the key geographical location of the country, in southern Africa at the southeastern tip of the Great Rift Valley. As such, Mozambique is an area of interest to evaluate the origins and dispersion of Homo sapiens within Africa, particularly in relation to Middle Stone Age contexts and associated early modern human ecology and cognition.This paper focuses on preliminary survey results from the Niassa District, near Lake Niassa (also known as Lake Malawi) in northern Mozambique. The results include the discovery and location of more than 80 new surface lithic concentration localities, as well as data from two new sites, the open air surface site of Ncuala and the rock shelter of Chicaza. For Chicaza we provide a series of new radiocarbon dates for the Iron Age and Late Stone Age occupations based on preliminary testing carried out at the site. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA.     Despite the progress made in sentence-level NMT, current systems still fall short at achieving fluent, good quality translation for a full document. Recent works in context-aware NMT consider only a few previous sentences as context and may not scale to entire documents. To this end, we propose a novel and scalable top-down approach to hierarchical attention for context-aware NMT which uses sparse attention to selectively focus on relevant sentences in the document context and then attends to key words in those sentences. We also propose single-level attention approaches based on sentence or word-level information in the context. The document-level context representation, produced from these attention modules, is integrated into the encoder or decoder of the Transformer model depending on whether we use monolingual or bilingual context. Our experiments and evaluation on English-German datasets in different document MT settings show that our selective attention approach not only significantly outperforms context-agnostic baselines but also surpasses context-aware baselines in most cases.     We consider Grand Unified Theories based on $SO(10)$ which originate from $M$ theory on $G_2$ manifolds. In this framework we are naturally led to a novel solution of the doublet-triplet splitting problem involving an extra $\overline{{\bf 16}}_X+{\bf 16}_X$ vector-like pair by considering discrete symmetries of the extra dimensions and preserving unification. Since Wilson line breaking preserves the rank of the gauge group, the necessary $U(1)$ gauge breaking is generated from extra multiplets. The main prediction of the approach is the existence of light states with the quantum numbers of a $\overline{{\bf 16}}_X+{\bf 16}_X$ vector-like pair which could show up in future LHC searches.     This paper focus on neo-Latin cosmological poetry authored by the Portuguese philosophers and physicians Francisco Sanches, Estêvão Rodrigues de Castro and Manuel Bocarro Francês. In Renaissance Europe, cosmological poetry was often perceived as a privileged means to discuss the constitution of the heaven, its structure and the interrelations of its parts. Yet, the Portuguese case presents what seems to be a particularity in European context. Aristotelian philosophical tradition was put into question all over Renaissance Europe, but in Portugal the first sharp and comprehensive criticism of Aristotelian natural philosophy emerged exclusively in poetical contours. It was due to Sanches, Rodrigues de Castro and Bocarro Francês, whose neo-Latin cosmological poems were influenced respectively by scepticism, Neo-Platonism, Lucretian atomism, and Stoic philosophy.     We consider a departure from standard quantum field theory, constructed so as to permit momentum eigenstates of both positive and negative energy. The resulting theory is intriguing because it brings about the cancellation of leading ultra-violet divergences and the absence of a zero-point energy. The theory gives rise to tree-level source-to-source transition amplitudes that are manifestly causal and consistent with standard S-matrix elements. It also leads to the usual result for the oblique corrections to the standard electroweak theory. Remarkably, the latter agreement relies on the breakdown of naive perturbation theory due to resonance effects. It remains to be shown that there are no problems with perturbative unitarity.     Abstract The book on how to make all the colour paints for illuminating books invites readers to step inside the workshop of a fifteenth century illuminator in Portugal. This illuminator was the carrier of a tradition on how to make colours with ‘which you can illuminate or paint or capitalize or write’ that dates back, at least, to the thirteenth century. This unique knowledge and know-how was carefully preserved in Portuguese language, in Hebrew characters, in a collection of texts now known as Ms. Parma 1959 (Parma, Italy, Biblioteca Palatina, MS 1959, folios 1r–20r). Its ultimate purpose was possibly to assist on the production of Hebrew Bibles, where the precision of the text would have been illuminated by the colours described in this ‘book of all colour paints’. This medieval treatise describes the main steps and ingredients for producing painting materials, such as mosaic gold, red lead, verdigris, brazilwood lake pigments, lac dye red, vermilion, parchment glue, among others. It also instructs on the binding media that should be used to produce the colour paints. In this paper, we will discuss the technical aspects relevant for the success of the making of the painting materials and of the experimentation of this remarkable text, copied in the fifteenth century.

    We present an extension of relativistic single-particle distribution function for weakly interacting particles at local thermodynamical equilibrium including spin degrees of freedom, for massive spin 1/2 particles. We infer, on the basis of the global equilibrium case, that at local thermodynamical equilibrium particles acquire a net polarization proportional to the vorticity of the inverse temperature four-vector field. The obtained formula for polarization also implies that a steady gradient of temperature entails a polarization orthogonal to particle momentum. The single-particle distribution function in momentum space extends the so-called Cooper-Frye formula to particles with spin 1/2 and allows to predict their polarization in relativistic heavy ion collisions at the freeze-out.     In this plenary talk delivered at the DISCRETE 2014 conference in London, I briefly summarize the ideas behind and attractive properties of the Galileon field theories, and describe a broad class of scalar field theories that share these properties. After describing how Galileons arise, and commenting on their fascinating properties, in the latter half of the talk I focus on novel ways of constructing Galileon-like theories, using both the probe brane construction, and the coset construction.     The rho and omega meson self-energy at finite temperature and baryon density have been analysed for an exhaustive set of mesonic and baryonic loops in the real time formulation of thermal field theory. The large enhancement of spectral strength below the nominal rho mass is seen to cause a substantial enhancement in dilepton pair yield in this mass region. The integrated yield after space-time evolution using relativistic hydrodynamics with quark gluon plasma in the initial state leads to a very good agreement with the experimental data from In-In collisions obtained by the NA60 collaboration.     We review the main features of the Weyl-Wigner formulation of noncommutative quantum mechanics. In particular, we present a $\star$-product and a Moyal bracket suitable for this theory as well as the concept of noncommutative Wigner function. The properties of these quasi-distributions are discussed as well as their relation to the sets of ordinary Wigner functions and positive Liouville probability densities. Based on these notions we propose criteria for assessing whether a commutative regime has emerged in the realm of noncommutative quantum mechanics. To induce this noncommutative-commutative transition, we couple a particle to an external bath of oscillators.
