The number of Serbs who were murdered by the Croatian Ustaša regime is still contentious, even though there is broad agreement on the figures among expert historians. The issue is blurred by authors who ignore the canon of scientific discovery. Ustaša terror was awful enough, the author argues. Distorted numbers trivialize debate and degrade the victims.

O artigo procura investigar um tema pouco explorado na historiografia brasileira: o associativismo negro no Rio de Janeiro no contexto da Primeira República. A partir de um amplo levantamento em fontes jornalísticas, foi possível reconstituir, ainda que em breves apontamentos, a trajetória de várias agremiações fundadas por negros e dedicadas às lutas e mobilizações pelos direitos - civis, políticos e sociais - desse segmento populacional.

RESUMEN El artículo expone los resultados de una investigación historiográfica, con vocación interdisciplinaria, sobre los movimientos estudiantiles de América Latina. Más puntualmente identifica algunos rasgos presentes en cuatro grandes movimientos estudiantiles de los últimos cien años: el argentino de 1918, el brasileño de 1968, el mexicano de 1968 y el chileno de 2011. Un conocimiento relevante, entre otros aspectos, porque utiliza una escala de análisis temporal y espacial inédita en un campo donde priman los acercamientos a un solo movimiento estudiantil. Los rasgos compartidos por estos movimientos fueron identificados mediante un proceso sistemático de análisis de contenido que incorporó datos e interpretaciones provenientes de las principales fuentes tanto primarias como secundarias en la materia. Entre los rasgos identificados se cuentan el que en todos los movimientos se utilizara un repertorio de protestas similar y que en todos se defendiera la autonomía universitaria.

This paper analyses and critiques the Queensland Government's Research and Development (R&D) strategy that undergirds the smart state policy agenda. We argue that this strategy poorly addresses: R&D opportunities deriving from the applied social and creative disciplines; and the role of the social and creative disciplines in the development and commercialisation process for all research. Furthermore, we suggest this derives from a view of ‘smart’ which is biased towards science and technology. Queensland can no longer afford to understand the social and creative disciplines as commercially irrelevant, ‘civilising’ disciplines. Instead they must be recognised as the vanguard of economic growth. In particular, the proposed R&D strategy does nothing to position Queensland for the emerging wave of innovation needed to meet demand for content creation in entertainment, education, government, and health information, in order to exploit universal networked broadband architectures currently in development. Not only is research in the applied social and creative disciplines required for its own commercial potential, but also because such research must be hybridised with science and technology research to realise the commercial potential of the latter. Commercialisation depends on ‘whole product value propositions’ not just basic research. We suggest that there needs to be mechanisms whereby research in the social and creative disciplines can be meaningfully hybridised with basic research in technology to create new commercial opportunities for Queensland. To this end we describe two examples of research driven commercialisation outside science/technology, namely interaction design and broadcasting.

Descriptions in Northern Sotho textbooks of past tense formation and the many alternations of the past tense suffix have traditionally been based on the phonological environment to which * -ile is affixed. Explanations were never offered as to why, within the same phonological environment, the past tense suffix could realise different past tense forms. The realisation of more than one form in similar phonological environments has been interpreted as exceptions. Following on the valuable contribution of Bastin (1983), this article illustrates how, when affixed to similar vowel-consonant phonological environments constituted by simple stem material versus an extension occurring in a stem, the past tense suffix in Northern Sotho reacts differently. This is seen as indicating that simple verb stems and extended verb stems were historically treated differently during past tense formation. Although the boundaries between the two strategies that were followed have become blurred due to analogy and lexicalisation, there is ample language data to support this notion. The research reflected in this article was aimed at building a lexical transducer for the formation of Northern Sotho past tense verbs and serves to augment rather inadequate existing grammatical descriptions of past tense formation. Gottfried Wilhelm Osann (1796–1866) was a German scientist most renowned for his work in chemistry and physics. However, inspired by Goethe’s work on color, he published a paper on simultaneous color contrast in 1833 using a method that is similar to that of later authors: reflection of an achromatic spot from an angled piece of glass. He wrote at least four more papers on color contrasts, in 1836 using essentially the same method as credited to others. We provide a description and translation of Osann’s 1833 paper and the relevant part of his 1836 paper, say why these papers are interesting and important, give some biographical information about Osann, comment on the fate of Osann’s papers, and describe Osann’s other papers on color.
