Micromorphological Analyses of Inuit Communal Sod Houses in Northern Labrador, Canada

Abstract
Undisturbed oriented archaeological sediment samples were retrieved from the interior of three communal semisubterranean sod houses using steel Kubiëna boxes (10 cm3). The sampling strategy was aimed at obtaining a micromorphological portrait of each activity carried out within the communal house. The primary areas of interest were the following: sleeping platform, floor, lampstand, and entrance tunnel. We sought to determine if we could demarcate activity areas based on soil microstructure and pedofeatures.
