The tritrophic association of bats, bat flies, and Laboulbeniales microfungi is a remarkably understudied system that may reveal patterns applicable to community ecology theory of (hyper)parasites. Laboulbeniales are biotrophic microfungi, exclusively associated with arthropods, with several species that are specialized on bat flies, which themselves are permanent ectoparasites of bats. Several hypotheses were tested on biotic and abiotic traits that may influence the presence and prevalence of hyperparasitic Laboulbeniales fungi on bat flies, based on southeastern European data. We found a wide distribution of fungal infection on bat flies, with underground-dwelling bats hosting more Laboulbeniales-infected flies compared to crevice-dwelling species. Bat host behavior, sociality, roost selection (underground versus crevice), bat fly sex, and season all have significant effects on the prevalence of fungal infection. Laboulbeniales infections are more common on bat flies that are infecting bat species with dense and long-lasting colonies (Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis myotis, Myotis blythii), which roost primarily in underground sites. Inside these sites, elevated temperature and humidity may enhance the development and transmission of Laboulbeniales fungi. Sexual differences in bat hosts’ behavior also have an effect on fungal infection risk, with densely roosting female bat hosts harboring more Laboulbeniales-infected bat flies.

Depuis plus d’une cinquantaine d’années, les noms sous-spécifiés ou Nss ont fait l’objet de plusieurs tentatives de classification (notamment Francis 1986, 1994 ; et Francis et Manning 1998 ; Schmid, 2000 ; mais aussi Flowerdew et Forest, 2014). Cette catégorie nominale, difficile à cerner, possède certaines caractéristiques comme l’incomplétude informationnelle, le besoin d’une spécification, la capacité à condenser l’information et à la catégoriser. Si ces propriétés sémantiques et discursives contribuent toutes deux à justifier l’existence d’une catégorie nominale particulière que constitueraient les Nss, à mi-chemin entre le mot plein et l’élément grammatical, elles pointent surtout vers une fonction des Nss dans l’expression du point de vue du locuteur et donc d’une évaluation. C’est en ce sens que nous proposons une classification modale des Nss, inspirée des travaux de Chevalier et Léard (1993 et 1994) et de Gosselin (2010, 2015, 2018). Une telle typologie, mettant en lumière les schémas modaux qui sous-tendent le discours, permettrait ainsi de mieux rendre compte du fonctionnement global des Nss, à la fois sur les plans sémantique, textuel et discursif. Since the term ‘shell nouns’ was coined and even before that, this nominal category has proven notoriously hard to grasp. In trying to tackle that issue, several linguists produced their own classification, among whom Francis (in 1986 and 1994, and later with Manning in 1998), Schmid (2000), and Flowerdew and Forest (2014), but without considering the evaluation factor that comes with shell nouns, or at least without putting it at the centre of their typology. Indeed, the notion of encapsulation (Conte 1996), which has been shown to fill in the gaps left by their informational incompleteness, and the ability of shell nouns to categorise (Legallois 2008) are all proof that these nouns do form a category on their own, lying somewhere between lexical and grammatical categories. However, little work has been done on their textual and discourse functions, which could be, according to us, the starting point of a comprehensive typology. The modal classification that we thus offer focuses on unveiling modal patterns behind the use of shell nouns and draws on the works of Chevalier and Léard (1993 and 1994) as well as Gosselin (2010, 2015, 2018).

Our fruits, vegetables, and cereal crops stem from a wild ancestor and have undergone major changes through millennia of domestication and selection. There are various ways to reveal plant diversity over time, and one of these is through the combination of art history and genetics (also known as #ArtGenetics). Here, we discuss this approach from the art historian’s point of view and flag the advantages and caveats of such an approach. We also advocate for the development of an integrated, global art database to facilitate such analyses.

International audience; As micromammals are highly sensitive to changes in their habitat, variations in species representation are often used to reconstruct local environmental conditions. However, taphonomic aspects of micromammals are often overlooked, despite the fact that they can provide important information for our understanding of archaeological sites. La Roche-à-Pierrot, Saint-Césaire, is a major archaeological site for our understanding of the Middle-to-Upper Palaeolithic transition in Western Europe. Clearly documenting site formation processes, the post-depositional reworking of deposits and the sequence of human occupations is fundamental for providing a secure archaeostratigraphic context of the site. The exceptionally large accumulation of micromammals from recently excavated stratigraphic units at the site makes it possible to track variations in the density of micromammals across the stratigraphic sequence. The taphonomic analysis of micromammals demonstrates these variations are not related to a change in the main accumulation agent or post-depositional phenomena. A negative correlation between small mammal remains and archaeological material suggests that peaks in micromammal densities can potentially be correlated with periods when the site was abandoned or when human occupation was less intense, and therefore provide new data for interpreting the Saint-Césaire stratigraphic sequence.

In recent decades, youth language has become one of the preferred research areas in sociolinguistics, not only because of its non-normative nature but mostly because it is recognized as a catalyst for language change. Since adolescents aspire to create and safeguard an in-group identity, they constantly generate innovative linguistic forms. However, few studies have empirically monitored the speed at which linguistic innovations are introduced into youth language. This study explores the speed and nature of recent language change within Spanish youth language by conducting a corpus analysis in real time. Data of the contemporary CORMA corpus (Corpus Oral de Madrid, compiled between 2016 and 2019) are contrasted with the highly comparable data of the COLAm corpus (Corpus Oral de Lenguaje Adolescente de Madrid, compiled between 2003 and 2007). The study scrutinizes two typical phenomena of youth language, namely the use of intensifiers (e.g., super-, mazo) and vocatives (e.g., tío/tía, chaval/chavala). It is shown that changes occur at a more moderate speed than previously assumed and that the speed of change depends on the linguistic phenomenon under study. Additionally, the data suggest that more neutral forms remain quite stable over time, while the use of more expressive items shrinks or increases faster.

A história do processo penal da Bélgica está profundamente relacionada à sua herança francesa por meio de seu Code d'instruction criminelle de 1808, ainda em vigor atualmente. A fim de retratar a história moderna do processo penal belga, este artigo visa a enfatizar a evolução das iniciativas de reforma em relação aos aspectos mais simbólicos herdados do processo francês: o próprio Código de 1808, a investigação preliminar focalizada na pessoa do juge d’instruction e a emblemática justiça popular da cour d’assises. Dividida em seis períodos de 1814 a 2020, esta pesquisa histórica abordará e contextualizará questões como a substituição ou a manutenção do Código francês, a melhoria da instruction de acordo com suas principais características napoleônicas ou sua transformação em outro tipo de investigação pré-julgamento, bem como a limitação ou mesmo a abolição da justiça popular. The history of Belgium’s criminal procedure is deeply related to its French heritage through its Code d’instruction criminelle of 1808 still in force nowadays. In order to portray the modern history of Belgium’s criminal procedure, this paper aims at emphasizing the evolution of the reform initiatives regarding the most symbolic aspects inherited from the French procedure: the Code of 1808 itself, the pretrial investigation focused on the juge d’instruction’s person and the emblematic popular justice of the cour d’assises. Divided into six periods from 1814 to 2020, this historical research will address and contextualize issues such as the replacement or the maintaining of the French Code, the improvement of the instruction according to its Napoleonic main features or its transformation into another type of pretrial investigation as well as the limitation or even the abolition of popular justice.

the model is then trained by increasing the image–text similarity of the positive pair in the common space. During this process, we encode the inputs of our model with hierarchical encodings and remove irrelevant fragments with different indicator functions. We also study techniques to augment the limited training data with synthetic relevant textual fragments and transformed image fragments. The model is later fine-tuned by a limited set of small-scale image–text fragment pairs. We rank the test image fragments and noun phrases by their intermodal similarity in the learned common space. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed models outperform two state-of-the-art methods adapted to fine-grained cross-modal retrieval of cultural items for two benchmark datasets. (2) given a noun phrase artifact attribute, we retrieve the corresponding image fragment it specifies. To this end, we propose a weakly supervised alignment model where the correspondence between the input training visual and textual fragments is not known but their corresponding units that refer to the same artwork are treated as a positive pair.
