    International audience; Investigation into the nexus of human-environmental behavior has seen increasing collaboration of archaeologists, historians, and paleo-scientists. However, many studies still lack interdisciplinarity and overlook incompatibilities in spatiotemporal scaling of environmental and societal data and their uncertainties. Here, we argue for a strengthened commitment to collaborative work and introduce the “dahliagram” as a tool to analyze and visualize quantitative and qualitative knowledge from diverse disciplinary sources and epistemological backgrounds. On the basis of regional cases of past human mobility in eastern Africa, Inner Eurasia, and the North Atlantic, we develop three dahliagrams that illustrate pull and push factors underlying key phases of population movement across different geographical scales and over contrasting periods of time since the end of the last Ice Age. Agnostic to analytical units, dahliagrams offer an effective tool for interdisciplinary investigation, visualization, and communication of complex human-environmental interactions at a diversity of spatiotemporal scales.

    Discussing the current AHRC/LABEX-funded EyCon (Early Conflict Photography 1890–1918 and Visual AI) project, this article considers potentially problematic metadata and how it affects the accessibility of digital visual archives. The authors deliberate how metadata creation and enrichment could be improved through Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and explore the practical applications of AI-reliant tools to analyze a large corpus of photographs and create or enrich metadata. The amount of visual data created by digitization efforts is not always followed by the creation of contextual metadata, which is a major problem for archival institutions and their users, as metadata directly affects the accessibility of digitized records. Moreover, the scale of digitization efforts means it is often beyond the scope of archivists and other record managers to individually assess problematic or sensitive images and their metadata. Additionally, existing metadata for photographic and visual records are presenting issues in terms of outdated descriptions or inconsistent contextual information. As more attention is given to the creation of accessible digital content within archival institutions, we argue that too little is being given to the enrichment of record data. In this article, the authors ask how new tools can address incomplete or inaccurate metadata and improve the transparency and accessibility of digital visual records.

    The portal connecting the invisible and visible sectors is one of the most natural explanations of the dark world. However, the early-time dark matter production via the portal faces extremely stringent late-time constraints. To solve such tension, we construct the scalar-controlled kinetic mixing varying with the ultralight CP-even scalar’s cosmological evolution. To realize this and eliminate the constant mixing, we couple the ultralight scalar within 10$^{−33}$eV ≲ m$_{0}$ ≪ eV with the heavy doubly charged messengers and impose the ℤ$_{2}$ symmetry under the dark charge conjugation. Via the varying mixing, the keV – MeV dark photon dark matter is produced through the early-time freeze-in when the scalar is misaligned from the origin and free from the late-time exclusions when the scalar does the damped oscillation and dynamically sets the kinetic mixing. We also find that the scalar-photon coupling emerges from the underlying physics, which changes the cosmological history and provides the experimental targets based on the fine-structure constant variation and the equivalence principle violation. To ensure the scalar naturalness, we discretely re-establish the broken shift symmetry by embedding the minimal model into the ℤ$_{N}$-protected model.     Post-inflationary reheating phase is usually said to be solely governed by the decay of coherently oscillating inflaton into radiation. In this submission, we explore a new avenue toward reheating through the evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs). After the inflation, if PBHs form, depending on its initial mass, abundance, and inflaton coupling with the radiation, we found two physically distinct possibilities of reheating the universe. In one possibility, the thermal bath is solely obtained from the decay of PBHs while inflaton plays the role of dominant energy component in the entire process. In the other possibility, we found that PBHs itself dominate the total energy budget of the Universe during the course of evolution, and then its subsequent evaporation leads to radiation dominated universe. Furthermore, we analyze the impact of both monochromatic and extended PBH mass functions and estimate the detailed parameter ranges for which those distinct reheating histories are realized.     This historical exploration of the development of the academic workforce in the UK and France was triggered by the observation of significant similarities in contemporary debates on casualisation, and segmentation despite their distinctive HE systems. We develop a quantitative history of academic staff to understand why the differences in the two HE systems are not as significant in respect to labour market and working conditions. The new data show that connected processes of casualisation, professional segmentation, and sectorial differentiation are used to manage tensions between massification and staff recruitment in both countries, in a context of declining and increasingly unequal distribution of resources, producing inequalities within institutions, as within the profession itself. The reorganisation of the academic workforce during three periods of growth of HE systems under traditional, Fordist and managerial influences has incrementally produced three groups of permanent, casualised, and precarised staff and a dual academic labour market.     Globular clusters contain multiple stellar populations, with some previous generation of stars polluting the current stars with heavier elements. Understanding the history of globular clusters is helpful in understanding how galaxies merged and evolved and therefore constraining the site or sites of this historic pollution is a priority. The acceptable temperature and density conditions of these polluting sites depend on critical reaction rates.     The previous understanding of Tian Shan's lithospheric architecture can be summarized into three models: unidirectional underthrusting, bidirectional underthrusting, and mantle upwelling. These models make distinctive predictions regarding the migration and subsidence histories of the foreland basins on either side of the range. Seismic profiles crossing both foreland basins document their migration and subsidence history. We analyze a seismic profile across the Southern Junggar foreland basin (SJFB) to the north of the range, which demonstrates that the basin migrated northward at ∼3.1 mm/yr during 22–16 Ma. Combining this with previously known migration rates of the Northern Tarim foreland basin (NTFB) to the south of the range, we constrain the migration of these two foreland basins relative to their basements. We then employ an elastic plate model to simulate the subsidence profiles across these two basins at ∼20 Ma, 13–16 Ma, ∼5 Ma, and 0 Ma constrained by back stripping well log data and seismic records of the basin onlaps. Our modelling reveals the propagation rates of the southern and northern Tian Shan thrust wedges and the evolution of their topographic loads. Our analysis and modelling demonstrate that the NTFB has the characteristics of a retro-foreland basin, whereas the SJFB resembles a pro-foreland basin during early-middle Miocene times. This suggests that the Tian Shan's growth during this period was dominated by underthrusting of the Junggar lithosphere. Furthermore, our analysis and modelling reveal a convergent pattern between the Tarim lithosphere and the Tian Shan changed from lithospheric indentation to lithospheric subduction after the middle Miocene, as the plate setting of the NTFB and SJFB changed. The Tian Shan had begun to uplift before the middle Miocene, with the orogen's height reaching half of its present elevation before the late Miocene.

    Abstract Ancient Egyptian mummification was practiced for nearly 4000 years as a key feature of some of the most complex mortuary practices documented in the archaeological record. Embalming, the preservation of the body and organs of the deceased for the afterlife, was a central component of the Egyptian mummification process. Here, we combine GC–MS, HT-GC–MS, and LC–MS/MS analyses to examine mummification balms excavated more than a century ago by Howard Carter from Tomb KV42 in the Valley of the Kings. Balm residues were scraped from now empty canopic jars that once contained the mummified organs of the noble lady Senetnay, dating to the 18th dynasty, ca. 1450 BCE. Our analysis revealed balms consisting of beeswax, plant oil, fats, bitumen, Pinaceae resins, a balsamic substance, and dammar or Pistacia tree resin. These are the richest, most complex balms yet identified for this early time period and they shed light on balm ingredients for which there is limited information in Egyptian textual sources. They highlight both the exceptional status of Senetnay and the myriad trade connections of the Egyptians in the 2nd millennium BCE. They further illustrate the excellent preservation possible even for organic remains long removed from their original archaeological context. International audience

    A discrete space-time structure lying at about the Planck scale may become manifest in the form of very small violations of the conservation of the matter energy-momentum tensor. In order to include such kind of violations, forbidden within the General Relativity framework, the theory of unimodular gravity seems as the simplest option to describe the gravitational interaction. In the cosmological context, a direct consequence of such violation of energy conservation might be heuristically viewed a "diffusion process of matter (both dark and ordinary)" into an effective dark energy term in Einstein's equations, which leads under natural assumptions to an adequate estimate for the value of the cosmological constant. Previous works have also indicated that these kind of models might offer a natural scenario to alleviate the Hubble tension. In this work, we consider a simple model for thecosmological history including a late time occurrence of such energy violation and study the modifications of the predictions for the anisotropy and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We compare the model's predictions with recent data from the CMB, Supernovae Type Ia, cosmic chronometers and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. The results show the potential of this type of model to alleviate the Hubble tension. Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

    International audience; Investigation into the nexus of human-environmental behavior has seen increasing collaboration of archaeologists, historians, and paleo-scientists. However, many studies still lack interdisciplinarity and overlook incompatibilities in spatiotemporal scaling of environmental and societal data and their uncertainties. Here, we argue for a strengthened commitment to collaborative work and introduce the “dahliagram” as a tool to analyze and visualize quantitative and qualitative knowledge from diverse disciplinary sources and epistemological backgrounds. On the basis of regional cases of past human mobility in eastern Africa, Inner Eurasia, and the North Atlantic, we develop three dahliagrams that illustrate pull and push factors underlying key phases of population movement across different geographical scales and over contrasting periods of time since the end of the last Ice Age. Agnostic to analytical units, dahliagrams offer an effective tool for interdisciplinary investigation, visualization, and communication of complex human-environmental interactions at a diversity of spatiotemporal scales.

    Discussing the current AHRC/LABEX-funded EyCon (Early Conflict Photography 1890–1918 and Visual AI) project, this article considers potentially problematic metadata and how it affects the accessibility of digital visual archives. The authors deliberate how metadata creation and enrichment could be improved through Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and explore the practical applications of AI-reliant tools to analyze a large corpus of photographs and create or enrich metadata. The amount of visual data created by digitization efforts is not always followed by the creation of contextual metadata, which is a major problem for archival institutions and their users, as metadata directly affects the accessibility of digitized records. Moreover, the scale of digitization efforts means it is often beyond the scope of archivists and other record managers to individually assess problematic or sensitive images and their metadata. Additionally, existing metadata for photographic and visual records are presenting issues in terms of outdated descriptions or inconsistent contextual information. As more attention is given to the creation of accessible digital content within archival institutions, we argue that too little is being given to the enrichment of record data. In this article, the authors ask how new tools can address incomplete or inaccurate metadata and improve the transparency and accessibility of digital visual records.

    The portal connecting the invisible and visible sectors is one of the most natural explanations of the dark world. However, the early-time dark matter production via the portal faces extremely stringent late-time constraints. To solve such tension, we construct the scalar-controlled kinetic mixing varying with the ultralight CP-even scalar’s cosmological evolution. To realize this and eliminate the constant mixing, we couple the ultralight scalar within 10$^{−33}$eV ≲ m$_{0}$ ≪ eV with the heavy doubly charged messengers and impose the ℤ$_{2}$ symmetry under the dark charge conjugation. Via the varying mixing, the keV – MeV dark photon dark matter is produced through the early-time freeze-in when the scalar is misaligned from the origin and free from the late-time exclusions when the scalar does the damped oscillation and dynamically sets the kinetic mixing. We also find that the scalar-photon coupling emerges from the underlying physics, which changes the cosmological history and provides the experimental targets based on the fine-structure constant variation and the equivalence principle violation. To ensure the scalar naturalness, we discretely re-establish the broken shift symmetry by embedding the minimal model into the ℤ$_{N}$-protected model.     Post-inflationary reheating phase is usually said to be solely governed by the decay of coherently oscillating inflaton into radiation. In this submission, we explore a new avenue toward reheating through the evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs). After the inflation, if PBHs form, depending on its initial mass, abundance, and inflaton coupling with the radiation, we found two physically distinct possibilities of reheating the universe. In one possibility, the thermal bath is solely obtained from the decay of PBHs while inflaton plays the role of dominant energy component in the entire process. In the other possibility, we found that PBHs itself dominate the total energy budget of the Universe during the course of evolution, and then its subsequent evaporation leads to radiation dominated universe. Furthermore, we analyze the impact of both monochromatic and extended PBH mass functions and estimate the detailed parameter ranges for which those distinct reheating histories are realized.     This historical exploration of the development of the academic workforce in the UK and France was triggered by the observation of significant similarities in contemporary debates on casualisation, and segmentation despite their distinctive HE systems. We develop a quantitative history of academic staff to understand why the differences in the two HE systems are not as significant in respect to labour market and working conditions. The new data show that connected processes of casualisation, professional segmentation, and sectorial differentiation are used to manage tensions between massification and staff recruitment in both countries, in a context of declining and increasingly unequal distribution of resources, producing inequalities within institutions, as within the profession itself. The reorganisation of the academic workforce during three periods of growth of HE systems under traditional, Fordist and managerial influences has incrementally produced three groups of permanent, casualised, and precarised staff and a dual academic labour market.     Globular clusters contain multiple stellar populations, with some previous generation of stars polluting the current stars with heavier elements. Understanding the history of globular clusters is helpful in understanding how galaxies merged and evolved and therefore constraining the site or sites of this historic pollution is a priority. The acceptable temperature and density conditions of these polluting sites depend on critical reaction rates.     The previous understanding of Tian Shan's lithospheric architecture can be summarized into three models: unidirectional underthrusting, bidirectional underthrusting, and mantle upwelling. These models make distinctive predictions regarding the migration and subsidence histories of the foreland basins on either side of the range. Seismic profiles crossing both foreland basins document their migration and subsidence history. We analyze a seismic profile across the Southern Junggar foreland basin (SJFB) to the north of the range, which demonstrates that the basin migrated northward at ∼3.1 mm/yr during 22–16 Ma. Combining this with previously known migration rates of the Northern Tarim foreland basin (NTFB) to the south of the range, we constrain the migration of these two foreland basins relative to their basements. We then employ an elastic plate model to simulate the subsidence profiles across these two basins at ∼20 Ma, 13–16 Ma, ∼5 Ma, and 0 Ma constrained by back stripping well log data and seismic records of the basin onlaps. Our modelling reveals the propagation rates of the southern and northern Tian Shan thrust wedges and the evolution of their topographic loads. Our analysis and modelling demonstrate that the NTFB has the characteristics of a retro-foreland basin, whereas the SJFB resembles a pro-foreland basin during early-middle Miocene times. This suggests that the Tian Shan's growth during this period was dominated by underthrusting of the Junggar lithosphere. Furthermore, our analysis and modelling reveal a convergent pattern between the Tarim lithosphere and the Tian Shan changed from lithospheric indentation to lithospheric subduction after the middle Miocene, as the plate setting of the NTFB and SJFB changed. The Tian Shan had begun to uplift before the middle Miocene, with the orogen's height reaching half of its present elevation before the late Miocene.

    Abstract Ancient Egyptian mummification was practiced for nearly 4000 years as a key feature of some of the most complex mortuary practices documented in the archaeological record. Embalming, the preservation of the body and organs of the deceased for the afterlife, was a central component of the Egyptian mummification process. Here, we combine GC–MS, HT-GC–MS, and LC–MS/MS analyses to examine mummification balms excavated more than a century ago by Howard Carter from Tomb KV42 in the Valley of the Kings. Balm residues were scraped from now empty canopic jars that once contained the mummified organs of the noble lady Senetnay, dating to the 18th dynasty, ca. 1450 BCE. Our analysis revealed balms consisting of beeswax, plant oil, fats, bitumen, Pinaceae resins, a balsamic substance, and dammar or Pistacia tree resin. These are the richest, most complex balms yet identified for this early time period and they shed light on balm ingredients for which there is limited information in Egyptian textual sources. They highlight both the exceptional status of Senetnay and the myriad trade connections of the Egyptians in the 2nd millennium BCE. They further illustrate the excellent preservation possible even for organic remains long removed from their original archaeological context. International audience

    A discrete space-time structure lying at about the Planck scale may become manifest in the form of very small violations of the conservation of the matter energy-momentum tensor. In order to include such kind of violations, forbidden within the General Relativity framework, the theory of unimodular gravity seems as the simplest option to describe the gravitational interaction. In the cosmological context, a direct consequence of such violation of energy conservation might be heuristically viewed a "diffusion process of matter (both dark and ordinary)" into an effective dark energy term in Einstein's equations, which leads under natural assumptions to an adequate estimate for the value of the cosmological constant. Previous works have also indicated that these kind of models might offer a natural scenario to alleviate the Hubble tension. In this work, we consider a simple model for thecosmological history including a late time occurrence of such energy violation and study the modifications of the predictions for the anisotropy and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We compare the model's predictions with recent data from the CMB, Supernovae Type Ia, cosmic chronometers and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. The results show the potential of this type of model to alleviate the Hubble tension. Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures
