Der Vortrag entfaltet hermeneutische und epistemologische Fragen, die durch die sich entwickelnde digitale Forschung in den Geisteswissenschaften (Digital Humanities, DH) ausgelöst werden. Im Vordergrund steht die Skizze einer auf die DH bezogenen Wissenschaftsphilosophie anhand der folgenden Leitfragen: Was bedeutet das Narrativ einer „neuen“ Wissenschaft? Wer ist Subjekt der DH? Wo finden sich neue epistemische Logiken? Was ist das forschungspolitische Setting der DH? Und wie verhält sich dies alles zum Selbstverständnis „klassischer“ Geisteswissenschaften? Dabei zielt der Vortrag auf eine „digitale Hermeneutik“ in den Geisteswissenschaften.

The variable system was created to compile the 'MET-Pottery–Dataset' within the SNSF project No 100011_156205 ‘Mobilities, Entanglements and Transformations in Neolithic Societies of the Swiss Plateau (3900-3500 BC)’, short ‘MET-project’, conducted at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences, University of Bern between 2014 and 2018 (https://data.snf.ch/grants/grant/156205; https://boris.unibe.ch/77649/). It represents the largest and temporally most highly resolved collection of morphological pottery data of the Central European Neolithic. It offers data of 1046 ceramic vessels of different styles that originate out of 44 archaeological features of wetland and dryland sites of the northern Alpine Space and adjacent regions. Most of the archaeological contexts – anthropogenic layers of settlements, pits, and ditches – are typology-independent dated using dendrochronology or C14-dates. The data set includes a spreadsheet of nominal and numeric morphological variables, the collection of the vessels’ semi-profile silhouettes and the typological drawings from which all data was collected. In the scope of the MET-project ‘the data was used to elaborate a new mixed method research (MMR) methodology to investigate social relations beyond problematic concepts of homogeneous ‘archaeological cultures’. It is highly relevant for further methodological morphology-based research on pottery.

The burial sites scattered over the entire area of the canton Basel-Stadt represent the main archaeological source for the Early Middle Ages in Basel. Due to the great diversity in the grave goods and based on the interpretation of the antique written sources, the material has hitherto been interpreted ethnically, since the subdivision of the early medieval population into Romans, Alamans, Danubian-Suebi and Franks formed a basis for the interpretation. A new evaluation of the archaeological material based on the examination and reconstruction of networks using the distribution of brooch and belt types shall thus introduce new perspectives in the traditional narratives. This study showed that most of the interactions were locally or regionally determined and were focused on the High and Upper Rhine as well as in south-western Germany. Relations to the north – especially along the River Rhine – as well as with the Burgundian area also played an important role. Differences in the distribution (especially to the west or to the east) seem to be related not only to the chronology, but also specifically to the location of the burial sites on different transport and communication axes. Widespread influences appear to be decreasing over time, although these may be overlooked due to changes in burial practices. The csv file lists the sites (and their coordinates) where the analysed brooch and belt buckle types, which are represented in Basel in the early Middle Ages, are attested. For each site, the corresponding brooch or belt buckle type as well as the chronological frame has been specified. The lists of the individual burials corresponding to the sites are available in the ZAM article. Based on this csv file, the distribution of each brooch and belt buckle type has been mapped and modelled with a Kernel Density Estimation (KDE). Each TIFF file named after a brooch or belt buckle type show the corresponding map. Finally, this upload includes the high resolution figures published in the ZAM. These are the TIFF files names under Abb_1 to Abb_18.

This dataset contains two types of resources: Firstly, one Named Entity Recognition model developed in the context of the project "Dehmel digital" for the automatic annotation of persons, places, artworks and organisations in german-speaking letters from the period around 1900. The training corpus for model 20 consists of circa 270,000 manually annotated tokens. Second, a table in which the results of the performance test are broken down in detail. The performance was calculated on the basis of eight different test texts, each consisting of 10,000 manually annotated tokens.
