    Authors: M. Garzaniti; POSSAMAI, DONATELLA;

    This book on Slavic matriarchy is the result of the studies and researches that Evel Gasparini carried out over the span of his lifetime. Intrigued by the possibility of a close link between the collective ownership of the land and the ancient agricultural-matriarchal substrate of Slav culture, Gasparini launched on the titanic enterprise of analysing the archaeological and historical sources of early Slavic civilisation. Basing himself on a concept of culture elaborated in the ethnological field, he brought to light certain contradictions in the application of the Indo-European paradigm to Slavic culture and identified a series of elements illustrating the matriarchal substrate. Exploiting an uncommon knowledge of cultural anthropology and profound linguistic competencies, in this book Gasparini maps out a complex panorama ranging from the economy to the social structure and from the religious traditions to music and dance. Out of print for some time, the book is now proposed in a new, more convenient form, complete with an appendix on Finns and Slavs – which was originally intended as another chapter in the book but was then left out – a detailed preface by Gasparini's disciple Remo Faccani, and a bibliography of the scholar's oeuvre edited by Donatella Possamai.Il matriarcato slavo e il frutto degli studi e delle ricerche che Evel Gasparini compi durante l'arco della sua vita. Affascinato dall'ipotesi di una stretta connessione fra la proprieta collettiva delle terre e l'antico substrato agricolo-matriarcale della civilta slava, Gasparini si lancio nella titanica impresa di analizzare le fonti archeologiche e storiche sulla prima civilta slava. Basandosi su un'idea di cultura elaborata in campo etnologico, egli mise in luce alcune contraddizioni nell'applicazione del paradigma indoeuropeo alla civilta slava e individuo una serie di elementi a dimostrazione del substrato matriarcale. Grazie a conoscenze non comuni in antropologia culturale e a profonde competenze linguistiche, nel Matriarcato slavo Gasparini delinea un panorama complesso, dall'economia alla struttura sociale, dalle tradizioni religiose alla musica e alle danze. Scomparso dal mercato editoriale, il volume viene ora riproposto in una nuova, piu agevole veste, corredata dall'appendice Finni e slavi – che doveva rappresentare un ulteriore capitolo del Matriarcato, ma ne resto esclusa –, da una dettagliata prefazione di Remo Faccani, che di Gasparini fu discepolo, e da una bibliografia delle opere dello studioso curata da Donatella Possamai.

    Purpose: The assessment of risk related to the presence of potentially toxic elements in soils is strictly related to the knowledge of their form and mobility. These relevant properties depend on the complex interactions of the elements of concern with the soil particles that generally cannot be addressed by a single technique. This study presents an integrated approach implementing geochemical and mineralogical investigation techniques on samples from a former mining area (Tolfa Mountains district, northern Latium, Italy), where exploiting activities occurred until the recent past. In particular, the As total concentration and the As distribution in solid phases is studied with the aim to evaluate the possibility of environmental pollution and consequent risks for the health of people living in the area and possibly affected in case of significant mobilization of this toxic element. Materials and methods: Chemical (ICP-MS, ICP-OES) and mineralogical (Xray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES)) analyses and the evaluation of the heavy metal mobility (by means of a sequential extraction procedure) were performed. Results and discussion: Chemical analyses show a high As content in the soils collected immediately downstream the marcasite mine waste deposit, that is the starting point of As pollution over the whole area. XANES analyses show that As occurs in two oxidation states (AsIII and AsV) simultaneously in the tailing samples and nearby, while it has been mainly or totally transformed into AsV at increasing distance from the mine. XRD data show that sheet silicates don’t affect As behavior, whereas sequential extractions and SEM-EDX analyses reveal the evident association of As and Fe oxyhydroxides content. Conclusions: The use of an integrated geochemical-mineralogical approach allows to single out the contaminant forms and the relative potential threat. Arsenic in the surface level of such soils could be mobilized in the case of extreme meteorological or of a not well planned human event, even though there is no evidence yet of any serious contamination of either underground or flowing waters.

    Microorganisms often cause significant damage on historical objects. The archive or library materials 24 as well as textile or leather artifacts suffer serious attacks that need appropriate care treatments. 25 Several biocide processes have been implemented but often their application does not preserve the 26 material of the good. The objective of this work is the disinfection through ionizing radiation of 27 leather wallpaper from the museum building Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia (Rome, Italy). The controlled 28 sterilization treatments were carried out using X-ray beams to eliminate the microorganisms present 29 on the leather and maintaining unchanged the properties of the constituent material. Some fragments 30 of decorated leather wallpaper, dating back to the 1700s, were irradiated with X-rays up to 5000 Gy. 31 The amount of microorganisms was evaluated by microbiological analysis before and after X-ray 32 irradiation treatments to identify the dose that inhibits the bacterial load. It will be shown how the 33 results obtained by the application of different chemical-physical techniques (Scanning Electron 34 Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Light Transmission Analysis) have helped 35 in the evaluation of the impact of the X-rays on leather chemical and physical integrity.

    Authors: M. Garzaniti; POSSAMAI, DONATELLA;
