During the Second World War the frontal responsibility of northern Finland was held by German troops, who carried out large building projects to enhance the poor infrastructure of this peripheral region. This paper focuses on one of the biggest infrastructure projects performed by the Wehrmacht and Organisation Todt in Finland during the Second World War. The Hyrynsalmi-Kuusamo railway was to be built through a challenging landscape, by people who constantly overestimated their own abilities, and at the great expense and suffering of the workers who were mostly prisoners-of-war and forced labourers. Besides their own contemporary memories and experiences from this event, this construction project and its physical traces live in the local memories and have become part of the transgenerational heritage and remembrance of the war years. Using the wartime construction of the track as a starting point, this study goes on to map the heritage value, archaeological potential, and the state of research related to this German wartime project. Ethnic minority villages across Southwest China have recently experienced a dramatic increase in cultural heritage projects. Following new policies of rural development and the growth of tourism, villages are being converted into heritage sites to preserve the aesthetics of rurality and ethnicity. This article describes how architect scholars plan to create a ‘Chinese Traditional Village’ in a Dong autonomous district of Guizhou province, focusing in particular on the constraints of those plans and the negotiations. Rather than looking at plans as the end product, this article sheds light on the social dynamics of planning to reconsider the capacity for compromise between the interests and perspectives of planners, officials, and local inhabitants. Lasting compromises appear specifically in the materiality of buildings, pathways, and public space. Peer reviewed

There has been a strong quest for mapping and assessing ecosystem services (ES) to support governance. Yet, the institutional landscape that governs ES provision across multiple contexts has received less attention. We fill this research gap by developing and operationalising a framework for the analysis of policy documents that address European forest ES provision. By coding and analysing references to forest ES as well as innovations and governance mechanisms addressing these ES in national strategies on forest, biodiversity and bioeconomy, we map the institutional landscape of forest ES provision in Europe. We further analyse how biophysical supply of forest ES is connected to policies paying attention to ES and identifying innovations and governance for their provision. Innovations identified in policies centre around value chains of wood and bioenergy or biodiversity conservation, while non-wood forest products, cultural heritage, and recreation receive little attention. Biophysical supply of provisioning ES is connected to policies emphasising many innovations, while little supply of regulating ES could trigger service innovations and several new governance mechanisms. As forest ecosystems have received much attention in global, European and national sustainability policies, our institutional mapping illustrates that there is room for more use of innovations in promoting ES provision.

Virtual technology or VR can help museums give visitors a sensation of lost physical past and to experience history and cultural heritage. Technology intensifies the accessibility of historical cultural heritage and scientific interpretations thereof. VR differs from literal history and more traditional museum exhibitions on the past in that VR interpretations demand seamless coordination and cooperation between researchers and VR technologists. The exhibition Fateful Svensksund, opened at Maritime Centre Vellamo in June 2020, applies multimodal VR technologies to tell the story of the War between Sweden and Russian in 1788–1790 and its repercussions to the Kymi estuary. One exhibition piece, the virtual experience Smoke on the waves in particular presents an accessible 180 degree interpretation of the second battle of Svensksund that ended the war. The construction of this VR experience took a great deal of historical research in order the construct digital reimaginations of the many different kinds of ships and boats and tens of thousands of people who took part in this dreadful battle. This article discusses the many epistemic issues of digital reimagination and the use of VR in museum settings. VR in its dominant gamified modes calls for a complete interpretation of the past to ensure immersion. Archival sources rarely provide enough information forcing designers to make significant interpretations and creative decisions without the safety net of traditional, textual historical format with footnotes and discussions of epistemic risks. Yksi näistä on peliteknologialla toteutettu Savua aalloilla elämys, jossa sodan päättänyt Ruotsinsalmen toinen meritaistelu tuodaan museokävijän nähtäville virtuaalisesti. Elämystä varten tehtiin merkittävä määrä historiantutkimusta, jotta saaristolaivastojen alukset ja miehistöt voitiin rakentaa digitaalisesti uudelleen tulkittuina. Täs sä katsauksessa esittelen Ruotsin ja Venäjän Itämerellä 1700luvun lopussa toimineiden saaristo laivastojen alusten digitaalista mallintamista, siihen liittyviä tiedollisia ongelmia ja sitä käsittelevää virtuaalitodellisuushanketta.

This study examines how natural and manufactured ice were embraced in the expanding realm of urban hygiene in the Finnish capital city of Helsinki during the latter half of the nineteenth century and especially during the first half of the twentieth century. The study reveals the ambivalent nature of ice, as it was used as a mediator of coldness for refrigeration purposes. While it benefited hygienic food preservation, it was increasingly perceived as a potential transmitter of pathogenic bacteria, and thus a hygienic risk. The study addresses the ambiguous questions surrounding purity with regard to natural resources and their ‘artificial’ alternatives by linking them to the, then, increasingly topical problem of environmental pollution within the context of a rapidly urbanising and modernising city. The study contributes to the increasing number of environmental historical studies on the diverse aspects of the cryosphere by broadening the focus to urban regions. Peer reviewed

s south-eastern coast use several ES for food, medicine, income, livelihoods, and cultural heritage. However, this valuable ecosystem is currently experiencing numerous threats and stressors of anthropogenic and natural origin. In particular, large-scale development activities, driven by the blue growth agenda, and neoliberalism policy, pose a risk to the local communities by degrading coastal ecosystem services. Escaping this situation for coastal natural resource-dependent communities in Bangladesh will require a transformation in the governance structure. Implementing the Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) Guidelines that call for initiating policy change to deliver social justice to small-scale fisheries would help to address coastal ecosystem service conservation in Bangladesh. ecological system (SES), without losing diverse ecosystem services (ES) in south-east coastal Bangladesh. Based on this proposition, this study assesses the available ES and identifies the drivers responsible for ES changes, arguing for the application of social equity for resource conservation. The findings show that communities along Bangladesh&rsquo By employing empirical and secondary data (qualitative and quantitative), this study demonstrates how social equity (with its three dimensions) can meaningfully address the conservation of the coastal social&ndash

In January 2015, the City of Helsinki received a proposal for the construction of ‘a grand mosque’. In December 2017, the Urban Environment committee rejected the proposal. In the interim, the proposed mosque was the subject of intense public debate. A key point of dispute was whether the mosque would increase tensions between Sunni and Shia Muslims in Finland. This article explores the ways in which the mosque project became framed as a Sunni–Shia conflict. Special focus is put on a newspaper article published in the Helsingin Sanomat in July 2015 and the framing devices used therein. Peer reviewed

The understanding formulated in this essay suggests that in environmental social sciences there is a reason to shift the epicenter of the analysis from consumption to everyday life, to the varied practices of incomegetting. The built environment is central to human activity, serving as a stage upon which social activity takes place and is shaped. Built spaces not only reflect people’s needs and beliefs but also affect their experiences. As the material manifestation of human values and histories, buildings are instruments of power and enforcers of hierarchy, but also serve as powerful sites for protest or resistance. Architecture and the built environment should then hold a central place in postcolonial archaeology and especially the decolonization movement, which seeks to rebuild narratives of place through the empowerment of the historically underrepresented. However, despite the significance of the postcolonial critique for both archaeology and contemporary architectural theory, its impact has not been felt very deeply at the point where these two disciplines intersect. The first half of this introductory chapter summarizes the influence of postcolonial theory on the study of the built environment and explores its applicability in the analysis and interpretation of architecture from archaeological contexts. The second half summarizes the main themes of the volume as well as the individual contributions themselves.

Finnish children today enjoy a relatively high level of independent mobility. This article discusses how different urban planning professionals defined children's needs in a post-World War II Helsinki that was undergoing rapid urbanization, and how these discourses relate to childhood memories of the time. The emphasis on family by the planning professionals led to major changes in the city structure, including developed play areas, safer streets and shorter distances to schools. This study suggests that a dominant understanding of the importance of outdoor activities has contributed to the relatively stable level of independent mobility of the children in Helsinki.
