    This paper describes the process of gathering, aggregating, harmonizing, and publishing epistolary metadata through collaboration with Finnish cultural heritage (CH) organizations in order to create an inclusive archive for bottom-up analyses of 19th-century epistolary culture in the Grand Duchy of Finland (1808/09-1917). The authors are working in the digital humanities consortium project Constellations of Correspondence (CoCo) [1]. The unified metadata collections are harmonized, linked, enriched, and published on a Linked Open Data (LOD) service, and as a semantic web portal. In Europe, there are several digital humanities projects using well-curated metadata (detailed information about senders, recipients, dates, and places) from edited letter collections - like CKCC [2], correspSearch [3, 4], the Early Modern Letters Online (EMLO) [5][6], Norkorr [7], and SKILLNET [8]. In our project, most of the data come from unpublished collections scattered around different Finnish CH organizations. Collaboration with these CH organizations is pivotal for the successful outcome of the project. It requires a dialogue with them throughout the whole project period in the form of seminars and site visits, as well as sharing blogs and newsletters, also after the organizations have provided their letter metadata. We have also already seen that some of the participating organizations are prepared to clean their metadata or catalogue previously uncatalogued archival material to provide better and more metadata for the project. We will discuss this two-way process using the Finnish National Gallery as a case study. An important challenge yet to be studied profoundly is, if and how the CoCo project will be able to deliver to the CH organizations their metadata in an enriched format. In the first phase of the project, we conducted a survey that was sent to over 100 CH organizations (extending from small local museums to official central archives). The paper describes how the information was collected and how the survey was constructed in order to provide us with detailed enough information regarding their 19th-century collections and metadata formats. At the same time, we had to keep the query succinct in order to make the answering as effortless as possible. As to the data processing, we began with more than 350 000 letters, from eight different sources, each in its own digital format. Although the received data is mostly structured, we needed to parse running text to retrieve metadata in nearly every collection. Moreover, we had to analyze each dataset and identify possible structural mistakes. Furthermore, some records required Natural Language Processing to get actor names (e.g. senders, recipients) in dictionary format. The most difficult task has been to process word files which contain correspondence metadata in a variety of formats, easily understandable to humans but difficult for computational processing. A harmonizing data model for epistolary metadata collections was developed, which builds on international standards like CIDOC CRM to promote interoperability. The most central classes are Letter, Place and Actor. Also, provenance and archival information are included. Finally, the actor data is enriched by linking it to external databases like Wikidata and the Finnish AcademySampo and BiographySampo. These external sources provide detailed biographical information, e.g., times and places of birth and death, name variations, occupations, or genealogical relationships. Information present in the letter metadata like actor names and times of sending and receiving is used for matching entities between our data and the external databases, and further to reconcile the actors between data sources.     The liminal term terminality serves as a conversation piece for issues to do with our escalating climate crisis; it is a term of engagement against our lingering collective dis-engagement from what many of us perceive as irrelevant to our profession. Terminality builds alliances between its nominal identity as a term, the temporal duration of a term and the arrival-and-departure characteristics of a terminal. Inevitably, however, the term also connotes end-state or terminal condition. The use-value of such a term is to summon a set of interlinked issues and propositions to stimulate action from and within the most anthropocentric discipline of all: art history. The essay discusses how art history could respond to the above on the level of the material entities of the artworks themselves (usually abbreviated as “art”) and the narrations and interconnections we produce to account for their identities, interdependencies and temporal trajectories (usually abbreviated as “history”).     At a time when a global pandemic has disrupted lives to a large extent across the globe, doing research has become ever more complex, challenging and uncertain. Such unexpected shifts in the dynamics of research, resulting in unpredictable consequences, have prompted the author to further reflect on his positionality as a researcher writing LGBTQI history. In this paper, the author joins scholars who propose self-reflexivity as both an analytical and ethical tool in understanding volatile research contexts. In gender and sexuality studies much has been written about the importance of self-reflexivity in understanding the impact of researchers’ social and epistemic locations in knowledge production. The paper argues that self-reflexive practice is especially important in studying the histories of gender and sexual identities in a multiply colonised society such as the Philippines. The author reflects on his own identity and its continuing impact on his research process. Through a decolonial lens, he uses the Filipino psychological concept of pagkatao and unpacks its multi-layered meanings as selfhood, humanness and human dignity – three crucial elements in writing the history of identities.     Recent studies have found that explanations of the neolithisation of South Scandinavia based on dichotomies between migration (population replacement) and diffusion (in-group change) are insufficient if we want to understand the complexity and variation involved in what happened during the centuries around 4000 BCE. However, these contrasting narratives still overshadow discussions on change in South Scandinavia ~4000 BCE. Here, we present a study that investigates continuity and change in flint tool production technologies. In focus are socio-technical framework structures and knowledge-transfer systems investigated by technological analyses of Mesolithic core axes and Early Neolithic point-butted Type I axes, as well as Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic blade attributes. Our results reveal variation in socio-technical framework structures and knowledge-transfer systems in action that refers both to a local history of technologies with a tradition and to the introduction of new technologies by groups with links to the continent.     In history teaching and learning there is an educational tension. Should the past be understood from its own premises as a cognitive historical thinking act, or should we embrace aspects of students’ feelings and reactions in the present when interpreting the past? The aim of the article is to explore the concept of historical empathy by using the metaphor go visiting from Hannah Arendt, and with historical feature film as the educational arena. The article has an exploratory theoretical approach and with special focus on students’ meaning making. Therefore, empirical interview material in the form of students’ voices is used as critical dialogue partner to the theoretical perspective. The concept historical empathy is further explored through students’ experiences of historical feature films, and with help from the concept of in-between and the visiting metaphor in Arendt’s philosophy. A conclusion is that personal experiences in students’ life worlds need to have their place in historical meaning making and need to be in balance with the understanding of history that is required from a curriculum perspective. The point is not to dismiss these personal reactions and the historical meaning-making they entail. Arendt’s visiting metaphor makes it possible to embrace and nurture the inevitable tension in history education – how to handle the relation between past and present.

    Traditional attempts to define the concept of "art" has frequently meant finding their core characteristics or necessary and jointly sufficient conditions. Especially mimetic and formalist theories have had numerous proponents, arguing for the aesthetic relevance of iconicity or of formal aspects, respectively. In this paper, some basic tenets and problems of these approaches, most notably their essentialist biases, will be discussed. I shall put forward a moderate defense of the aesthetic relevance of mimetic or iconic features in the visual arts. Hereby, also studies from experimental aesthetics will be considered.

    This paper describes the process of gathering, aggregating, harmonizing, and publishing epistolary metadata through collaboration with Finnish cultural heritage (CH) organizations in order to create an inclusive archive for bottom-up analyses of 19th-century epistolary culture in the Grand Duchy of Finland (1808/09-1917). The authors are working in the digital humanities consortium project Constellations of Correspondence (CoCo) [1]. The unified metadata collections are harmonized, linked, enriched, and published on a Linked Open Data (LOD) service, and as a semantic web portal. In Europe, there are several digital humanities projects using well-curated metadata (detailed information about senders, recipients, dates, and places) from edited letter collections - like CKCC [2], correspSearch [3, 4], the Early Modern Letters Online (EMLO) [5][6], Norkorr [7], and SKILLNET [8]. In our project, most of the data come from unpublished collections scattered around different Finnish CH organizations. Collaboration with these CH organizations is pivotal for the successful outcome of the project. It requires a dialogue with them throughout the whole project period in the form of seminars and site visits, as well as sharing blogs and newsletters, also after the organizations have provided their letter metadata. We have also already seen that some of the participating organizations are prepared to clean their metadata or catalogue previously uncatalogued archival material to provide better and more metadata for the project. We will discuss this two-way process using the Finnish National Gallery as a case study. An important challenge yet to be studied profoundly is, if and how the CoCo project will be able to deliver to the CH organizations their metadata in an enriched format. In the first phase of the project, we conducted a survey that was sent to over 100 CH organizations (extending from small local museums to official central archives). The paper describes how the information was collected and how the survey was constructed in order to provide us with detailed enough information regarding their 19th-century collections and metadata formats. At the same time, we had to keep the query succinct in order to make the answering as effortless as possible. As to the data processing, we began with more than 350 000 letters, from eight different sources, each in its own digital format. Although the received data is mostly structured, we needed to parse running text to retrieve metadata in nearly every collection. Moreover, we had to analyze each dataset and identify possible structural mistakes. Furthermore, some records required Natural Language Processing to get actor names (e.g. senders, recipients) in dictionary format. The most difficult task has been to process word files which contain correspondence metadata in a variety of formats, easily understandable to humans but difficult for computational processing. A harmonizing data model for epistolary metadata collections was developed, which builds on international standards like CIDOC CRM to promote interoperability. The most central classes are Letter, Place and Actor. Also, provenance and archival information are included. Finally, the actor data is enriched by linking it to external databases like Wikidata and the Finnish AcademySampo and BiographySampo. These external sources provide detailed biographical information, e.g., times and places of birth and death, name variations, occupations, or genealogical relationships. Information present in the letter metadata like actor names and times of sending and receiving is used for matching entities between our data and the external databases, and further to reconcile the actors between data sources.     The liminal term terminality serves as a conversation piece for issues to do with our escalating climate crisis; it is a term of engagement against our lingering collective dis-engagement from what many of us perceive as irrelevant to our profession. Terminality builds alliances between its nominal identity as a term, the temporal duration of a term and the arrival-and-departure characteristics of a terminal. Inevitably, however, the term also connotes end-state or terminal condition. The use-value of such a term is to summon a set of interlinked issues and propositions to stimulate action from and within the most anthropocentric discipline of all: art history. The essay discusses how art history could respond to the above on the level of the material entities of the artworks themselves (usually abbreviated as “art”) and the narrations and interconnections we produce to account for their identities, interdependencies and temporal trajectories (usually abbreviated as “history”).     At a time when a global pandemic has disrupted lives to a large extent across the globe, doing research has become ever more complex, challenging and uncertain. Such unexpected shifts in the dynamics of research, resulting in unpredictable consequences, have prompted the author to further reflect on his positionality as a researcher writing LGBTQI history. In this paper, the author joins scholars who propose self-reflexivity as both an analytical and ethical tool in understanding volatile research contexts. In gender and sexuality studies much has been written about the importance of self-reflexivity in understanding the impact of researchers’ social and epistemic locations in knowledge production. The paper argues that self-reflexive practice is especially important in studying the histories of gender and sexual identities in a multiply colonised society such as the Philippines. The author reflects on his own identity and its continuing impact on his research process. Through a decolonial lens, he uses the Filipino psychological concept of pagkatao and unpacks its multi-layered meanings as selfhood, humanness and human dignity – three crucial elements in writing the history of identities.     Recent studies have found that explanations of the neolithisation of South Scandinavia based on dichotomies between migration (population replacement) and diffusion (in-group change) are insufficient if we want to understand the complexity and variation involved in what happened during the centuries around 4000 BCE. However, these contrasting narratives still overshadow discussions on change in South Scandinavia ~4000 BCE. Here, we present a study that investigates continuity and change in flint tool production technologies. In focus are socio-technical framework structures and knowledge-transfer systems investigated by technological analyses of Mesolithic core axes and Early Neolithic point-butted Type I axes, as well as Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic blade attributes. Our results reveal variation in socio-technical framework structures and knowledge-transfer systems in action that refers both to a local history of technologies with a tradition and to the introduction of new technologies by groups with links to the continent.     In history teaching and learning there is an educational tension. Should the past be understood from its own premises as a cognitive historical thinking act, or should we embrace aspects of students’ feelings and reactions in the present when interpreting the past? The aim of the article is to explore the concept of historical empathy by using the metaphor go visiting from Hannah Arendt, and with historical feature film as the educational arena. The article has an exploratory theoretical approach and with special focus on students’ meaning making. Therefore, empirical interview material in the form of students’ voices is used as critical dialogue partner to the theoretical perspective. The concept historical empathy is further explored through students’ experiences of historical feature films, and with help from the concept of in-between and the visiting metaphor in Arendt’s philosophy. A conclusion is that personal experiences in students’ life worlds need to have their place in historical meaning making and need to be in balance with the understanding of history that is required from a curriculum perspective. The point is not to dismiss these personal reactions and the historical meaning-making they entail. Arendt’s visiting metaphor makes it possible to embrace and nurture the inevitable tension in history education – how to handle the relation between past and present.

    Traditional attempts to define the concept of "art" has frequently meant finding their core characteristics or necessary and jointly sufficient conditions. Especially mimetic and formalist theories have had numerous proponents, arguing for the aesthetic relevance of iconicity or of formal aspects, respectively. In this paper, some basic tenets and problems of these approaches, most notably their essentialist biases, will be discussed. I shall put forward a moderate defense of the aesthetic relevance of mimetic or iconic features in the visual arts. Hereby, also studies from experimental aesthetics will be considered.
