description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2021 Finland, PolandPublisher:Uniwersytet Lodzki (University of Lodz) Authors: Luciano Micali;Luciano Micali;handle: 10138/354542 , 11089/41544
The article aims to analyze the meaning and the role of the notion of communis schola in the theological and ecclesiological thought of Jean Gerson (1363–1429), Chancellor of the University of Paris, schoolman influent in every intellectual debate of his time, and renowned spiritual advisor. Driven by a constant concern for the unity of the Church, Gerson is aware of the need to realize this unity first of all within the University environment, in order to avoid the circulation and the spread of heterodox or even heretical doctrines; his references to the concept of “common school”, in different textual contexts and with various shades of meaning, invest not only the doctrinal contents, but also the methodology, the moral attitudes, and the right theological models of the ideal master and of the ideal student of theology. The article also touches the way in which the Parisian chancellor deals with mysticism and mystical writers, using the concept of “common school” to define the borders and the terms in which it is possible to access the difficult and obscure field of the mystical theology.

The article examines the rise in violence in the state of Sinaloa between the 1940s and the 1980s. It analyzes the shifting structure of the drug trade and the changing roles of federal and state authorities, bringing both observations together. By looking at the changing nature of the drug trade and its relationship to state authorities from the 1930s through to the 1970s, the article attempts to understand why Sinaloa experienced such an upsurge in violence during the period, and to engage with three broad conceptual debates: the role of violence and coercion in Mexican state-making, a more particular debate about the (subnational) historiography of the 1960s, and 1970s; and, finally about the relationships between violence and (organized) crime. In doing so, it contributes to a significant paradigm shift from approaches that prioritized non-violent forms of state-making and political mediation, and with a strong focus on national institutions, towards one that systematically examines the role of coercion, violence, repression and criminal networks in the workings of Mexican state power and state-making.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2021Publisher:SAGE Publications Authors: Natan Elgabsi;Natan Elgabsi; This study takes off from the ethical problem that racism grounded in population genetics raises. It is an analysis of four standard scientific responses to the problem of genetically motivated racism, seen in connection with the Human Genome Diversity Project (HGDP): (1) Discriminatory uses of scientific facts and arguments are in principle ‘misuses’ of scientific data that the researcher cannot be further responsible for. (2) In a strict scientific sense, genomic facts ‘disclaim racism’, which means that an epistemically correct grasp of genomics should be ethically justified. (3) Ethical difficulties are issues to be ‘resolved’ by an ethics institution or committee, which will guarantee the ethical quality of the research scrutinized. (4) Although population genetics occasionally may lead to racism, its overall ‘value’ for humankind justifies its cause as a desirable pursuit. I argue that these typical responses to genetically motivated racism supervene on a principle called the ‘ethic of knowledge’, which implies that an epistemically correct account has intrinsic ethical value. This principle, and its logically related ideas concerning the ethic of science, effectively avoids a deeper ethical question of responsibility in science from being raised.

Trop; Mayandi Sivaguru;Kyle W. Fouke; Kyle W. Fouke; Jeffrey M. Trop; Mayandi Sivaguru;Next-generation high resolution brightfield microscopy, x-radiography, and microcomputed tomography (microCT) analyses indicate that coral skeleton high density band (HDB) and low density band (LDB) stratigraphic sequences record dynamic changes in coral growth history. HDB-LDB sequences were studied within three small heads of Orbicella annularis, an ecological keystone species in the Caribbean Sea, collected from the leeward fringing reefs on Curaçao. Results indicate that HDB layers are formed by the thickening of exothecal and endothecal dissepiments, costae, and theca located at the margin and external to individual skeletal cups (corallites). Conversely, septa and columellas located inside individual corallites do not change in thickness. HDB-LDB stratigraphic sequences were laterally traced from the center to the margins of individual coral heads, demonstrating that shifts took place in the trajectory of coral skeleton growth. Normal HDB layers in the center of individual coral heads are formed at the same time (age-equivalent) as surfaces of erosion and no skeleton growth (hiatuses) on the margins of the heads. These hiatus surfaces within HDB-LDB stratal geometries indicate that multiple marine ecological and environmental processes affect the orientation, size, shape, and geometry of coral skeletons during coral growth history. The presence of these hiatus surfaces in other large coral heads would strongly impact sclerochronology and the interpretation of multiple environmental factors including sea surface temperature (SST).

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2021 Finland, PolandPublisher:Uniwersytet Lodzki (University of Lodz) Authors: Luciano Micali;Luciano Micali;handle: 10138/354542 , 11089/41544
