Since winning the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1968, Norman Jewison’s In the Heat of the Night has been considered a landmark of Hollywood civil rights cinema. In Virgil Tibbs, generally considered the silver screen’s first Black detective, Sidney Poitier captured widespread anger over the glacial pace of social change in the early 1960s. Yet In the Heat of the Night also works to reproduce post-war Hollywood’s narrative regionalization of racism, in which discrimination, racial violence, and forms of institutional and structural racism are construed as distinctly southern phenomena. With emphasis on specific production decisions involving Stirling Silliphant’s screenplay, Jewison’s directorial choices, and the calculations of industry executives, this article considers how Hollywood’s “redneckification” of racism works to efface not only histories of racism in the American North and West but also the Canadian racism which marked Jewison’s Toronto childhood and animated his anti-racist sensibilities as a filmmaker.

Digital animation was originally developed at scientific research laboratories, where it was seen as an ideal tool for scientific research due to its ability to visualize, analyze, and synthesize time-serial data. It was eventually adopted by the entertainment industry when higher image resolutions made it possible to produce photorealistic visual effects, yet it still has numerous applications in such fields as biology, meteorology, geology, engineering, mathematics, and physics. This paper will argue that the difference between analog and digital animation should be understood not in terms of the indexicality of the images but rather in terms of the temporalities of their material substrates – that is, the difference between the time-based medium of film and the time-critical medium of the computer. Such an approach not only offers an important contribution to the field of animation studies but also explains the continued importance of animation for contemporary scientific research. Through the recontextualization of John Barth’s “textual exhaustion,” this paper explores the cause of unsuccessful textual impact in the modern popular culture sphere. Using the popular American television series The Simpsons as a case study, the author attempts to track the longest-running sitcom’s success or recent lack thereof through the use of intertextuality and textual exhaustion to understand what has caused a decline in ratings, receptions, and recreations. This paper brings reference to The Simpsons’ dual existence: first as a popular television show and second as an online hydra with a separate identity and fan base from the show itself.

This article explores the role of place-based philanthropy in rural community development through a case study of the Skeena watershed. The Skeena is an ecologically significant region in Northwest British Columbia that is confronting the complex and layered forces of change being experienced by many rural regions in Canada. Through qualitative interviews and document analyses, the article illustrates how a robust ecosystem of environmental community-based organizations (CBOs), funded by philanthropic capital, is extending beyond traditional environmental advocacy to fill important structural gaps in community development. Though pressed by capacity issues, the sector is shifting towards highly integrated and collaborative responses to development pressures and charting alternative pathways for development in the region. The complexity and scope of pressures in the Skeena offer insights for other rural regions and the dynamic potential and challenges associated with place-based philanthropy in community and regional development processes.

Urban Functional Zone (UFZ) identification is vital for urban planning, renewal, and development. Point of Interest (POI), as one of the most popular data in UFZ studies, is transformed into a geo-corpus under specific sampling strategies, which can be used with Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology to extract geo-semantic features and identify UFZs. However, existing studies only capture a single spatial distribution pattern of POIs, while ignoring the other spatial distribution information. In this paper, we developed an integrated geo-corpus construction approach to capture multi-spatial distribution patterns of POIs that were represented by different modal POI embeddings. Subsequently, random forest model was leveraged to classify UFZs based on those embeddings. A set of combination experiments were designed for performance validation. The results show that our proposed method can effectively identify UFZs with an accuracy of 72.9%, with an improvement of 8.5% compared to the baseline methods. The outcome of this study will help urban planners to better understand UFZs through investigating the integrated spatial distribution patterns of POIs embedded in UFZs.
