A recurrent demand in many archaeological digital documentation systems is the need for an accurate as possible registration of data. Somehow, contrary to this request, are efforts led by various computer science groups dealing with 3D documentation and focusing on developing fast and cheap solutions to record 3D models of archaeological assets. The aim of the article is to highlight the importance of aligning the 3D documentation strategy to the archaeological aims, by detailing all factors to be considered when deciding on one documentation strategy over another. The archaeological question discussed here, part of the PhD thesis of one of the co-authors (MP), relates to the Cypro-Minoan signatory and its diachronic variability. The 3D geometric characterization of signs and subsequent shape analysis is the method chosen to reach this goal. A major effort to be invested in correctly determining the shape and variability of each sign, is in assuring that the 3D captured shape is as close as possible to the archaeological reality, which is a common problem not only in palaeographical analysis but also in other fields, where features of interest are in the sub-millimetre range. The paper will illustrate how different data acquisition approaches and post-processing steps such as alignment methods and error treatment may distort the visualised result and thus have a negative impact on planned analysis. Thus, it will argue for the importance of more detailed paradata to allow an informed assessment of the reliability of 3D models and it proposes a list of values and decision-making steps that help make the 3D digitization process more robust and verifiable.

Kombrink; Stuart G. Archer;Stefano Patruno; H. Kombrink; Stuart G. Archer;Abstract The Devonian–Recent tectono-stratigraphic history of the Northern, Central and Southern North Sea is here reviewed at a regional scale and four novel cross-border pseudo-Wheeler diagrams are presented to summarize the stratigraphic evolution of the cycles of basin fill and uplift/erosion. In this scheme, six first-order megasequence boundaries have been defined, characterized by extensive and long-lasting erosional hiatuses and major coastal regressions: (1) Caledonian (or Base Devonian) Unconformity; (2) Variscan–Saalian (or Base Permian) Unconformity; (3) Mid Cimmerian (or Intra-Aalenian) Unconformity; (4) Late Cimmerian (or Base Cretaceous) Unconformity; (5) Atlantean (or Near-Base Tertiary) Unconformity; and (6) Eridanos (or Mid-Miocene) Unconformity. These surfaces have been linked to regional causal factors ranging from orogenesis-related compressional uplifts, in either active plate margin settings (1) or foreland basin settings (2), to intra-plate dynamically supported uplifts associated with the development of mantle plumes (3, 5 and 6) and the end-of-rifting and associated widespread erosion of tilted fault block crests (4). The aforementioned megasequence boundaries punctuate the geodynamic evolution of the North Sea area and facilitate the subdivision of the entire the North Sea sedimentary basin fill into six megasequences, named here A–F. All of the lithostratigraphic units of the North Sea (formations and members) have been described within the context of this first-order tectono-stratigraphic framework. The correlation powers of certain stratigraphic markers are also compared and contrasted, together with the potential cross-border equivalence of sedimentary units on different sides of the political median lines.

This research addresses the cooling potential of natural ventilation in heavyweight buildings located in dense and organically developed historic urban centres in the Mediterranean climate. An innovative multi-scale approach was adopted through the consideration of the airflow field on the neighbourhood, street canyon and building levels, using field measurements. The focus is on two particular features of vernacular architecture, which both play a key role in natural ventilation: namely the typological characteristics of the tripartite arrangement (trimeres) with pass-through spaces – portico, and the morphological characteristics of sahnisi – a lightweight projecting volume with multiple windows. The first comprehensive mapping and record of the remaining stock of heritage buildings featuring portico and sahnisi in the historic centre of Nicosia in Cyprus was conducted through this thesis. Urban-scale considerations in the definition of typological and morphological aspects of porticos and sahnisis were discussed through the lens of environmental performance for the first time. Indoor thermal comfort was assessed taking into consideration the parameters of temperature (comparing three adaptive comfort models), relative humidity and air velocity. The findings address building ventilation as a function of in-street and rooftop airflow, which is part of what makes this work so original. Specifically, the airflow in the street canyon ranged at a magnitude of one third of the reference wind velocity at the rooftops. Peak indoor air velocity in the porticos reached up to one fifth of the canyon’s wind speed, while in the sahnisi it reached up to half of the canyons’ wind speed (during the all-day ventilation pattern). This indicates the wind-capture potential of the sahnisi, which had not been quantified before. The impact of occupant behaviour and particular window operation patterns on indoor thermal comfort are also discussed, concluding with recommendations for optimised window opening patterns, given the variability of the background wind and street geometry. The potential of cooling ventilation due to elevated air speed was found to be limited, as no indoor air movement was recorded for most of the time. However, the cooling effectiveness of night ventilation was demonstrated. Finally, the dispersion of the obtained urban airflow measurements manifests the complexity of airflow in real, inhomogeneous historic urban sites and highlights the need for further field research.

This paper explores teachers’ perceptions on the Greek Diagnostic Language Assessment (GDLA) tool recently introduced into the SL preparatory classes of the Cyprus primary education. The tool’s implementation coincides with the launch of a new SL curriculum. The objective is fourfold: (1) to examine GDLA’s washback effects on teaching/assessment, (2) to investigate washback’s variability with respect to several contextual variables, (3) to collect feedback on the perceived credibility of the tool, and (4) to reflect on the use of the GDLA tool as a lever of instructional reform in support of curricular innovation. The study employs a mixed-methods approach and draws on (a) quantitative data (questionnaire, 234 informants) and (b) qualitative data (interviews, 6 participants). The results indicate a positive and quite strong washback on teaching and assessment. However, they bring to the surface several misconceptions on the purpose and the implementation of diagnostic assessment, pointing to gaps in the teachers’ assessment literacy. They also bring into play school administration constraints. Finally, they imply that a diagnostic assessment aligned to a context-sensitive curriculum may bind the test to positive washback.

It is an online application that enables the juxtaposed presentation of two works of art from different historical periods and artistic environments and the tracing of similar elements they share (forms, motifs, gestures, compositional details etc.). The aim of this application is to allow the exhibition curator and the art historian to evaluate the choices made by the audience, concerning works of art, related to an exhibition project. It will also conduce to increase the attractiveness of art exhibitions for the general public, as the application may arouse interest and contribute to the better understanding of the creative process and the compositional elements of works of art. First, we identify the scope of the challenge and explain basic concepts and definitions relating to interaction with works of art. Then, the design and functionality of the application are discussed. This is followed by the description of the conducted study and interpretation of the results. An eye-tracking study involved interaction of 63 participants of mixed background with 21 pairs of art works from the exhibition "Echoes of Antiquity in the Oeuvre of Domenikos Theotokopoulos". Finally, a few suggestions for future research are made, based on the conclusions drawn.

At the same time, however, the intensity of authoritarianism extended beyond the institutional level of the state and decisively affected many levels of social relations. This article analyses one of the many expressions of the relationship between authoritarianism and neoliberalism at social class level and the attempt to construct a disciplined working class committed to the state’s strategies. It focuses on the analysis of the content of ‘desired worker’ and ‘desired trade unionism’ which the AKP gov- ernment tries to impose, aiming to intensify control over sections of labourers. Analysing the content of social class, but even more specifically the content the government aims to attribute to the concept of working class and trade unionism, this study contributes towards a more general understanding of the development of authoritarianism. Decoding the different perceptions and ways the Erdoğan government exploits them in order to shed them of their class content, this article aims at a better comprehension of power mechanisms and mechanisms reproducing social inequality. 50 3 716 733

In this paper, we propose EvilText, a general ATGF that successfully evades some of the most popular NLP machines by (efficiently) perturbing a given legitimate text, preserving at the same time the original text's semantics as well as human readability. Perturbations are based on visually similar classes of characters appearing in the unicode set. EvilText can be utilized from NLP services' operators for evaluating their systems security and robustness. Furthermore, EvilText outperforms the state-of-the-art ATGFs, in terms of: (a) effectiveness, (b) efficiency and (c) original text's semantics and human readability preservation. We evaluate EvilText on some of the most popular NLP systems used for sentiment analysis and toxic content detection. We further expand on the generality and transferability of our ATGF, while also exploring possible countermeasures for defending against our attacks. Surprisingly, naive defence mechanisms fail to mitigate our attacks; the only promising one being the restriction of unicode characters use. However, we argue that restricting the use of unicode characters imposes a significant trade-off between security and usability as almost all websites are heavily based on unicode support.

It was found under a floor layer in a domestic context, and is dated to the beginning of the Late Cypriot IIIB period (end of the 12th– early 11th century BC). This jar burial is part of a series which seems to be attested, at least in the present state of documentation, only in eastern Cyprus (Enkomi, Salamis and, on a lesser scale, Kition) during a period that spans the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age. The Kition-Bamboula jar burial is notable for its wealth (jewellery, vase offerings, and food deposit). This article proposes a detailed and multidisciplinary study of the burial, as well as a comprehensive consideration of the treatment of infants’ dead bodies in Early Iron Age Cyprus. Abstract This paper presents a description and analysis of both the morphophonological processes in which the definiteness marker /l/ of Cypriot Arabic is involved, and the rules that are proposed to describe these processes. More specifically, we offer a thorough account of the allomorphs of this marker and of its phonological behaviour regarding the preceding or the following word. The analysis was primarily based on naturalistic data obtained from interviews with native speakers.

Predictive models have become an integral part of archaeological research, particularly in the discovery of new archaeological sites. In this paper, we apply predictive modeling to map high potential Pleistocene archaeological locales on the island of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean. The model delineates landscape characteristics that denote areas with high potential to unearth Pleistocene archaeology while at the same time highlighting localities that should be excluded. The predictive model was employed in surface surveys to systematically access high probability locales on Cyprus. A number of newly identified localities suggests that the true density of mobile hunter-gatherer sites on Cyprus is seriously underestimated in current narratives. By adding new data to this modest corpus of early insular sites, we are able to contribute to debates regarding island colonisation and the role of coastal environments in human dispersals to new territories.
