    Viene presentato l’impianto metodologico e tecnologico dell’edizione critica digitale del De nominedi Orso Beneventano (http://www.unipa.it/paolo.monella/ursus), una proof of concept delle innovazioni metodologiche proposte da Tito Orlandi. Il modello qui sperimentato intende superare la dicotomia tra edizione diplomatica e critica grazie ad un ripensamento profondo, semioticamente fondato, dei livelli di trascrizione e di edizione di un testo. I livelli scelti per questa edizione sono: (1) Livello grafematico, le cui unità minime sono i grafemi, inclusi i segni paragrafematici e le brachilogie sistematiche. Tutti i grafemi individuati dall’editore sono elencati nella Graphemic Table of Signs (GToS), che costituisce parte integrante dell’edizione. (2) Livello alfabetico, le cui unità minime sono le lettere alfabetiche. La GToS riporta il significato alfabetico standard dei grafemi. La codifica a livello alfabetico è fornita esplicitamente dall’editore all’interno di un elemento solo quando essa non sia desumibile dalla codifica grafematica tramite la tabella di corrispondenze fornita nella GToS. (3) Livello linguistico, le cui unità minime sono le parole flesse (), identificate tramite la combinazione di un lemma (lupus, -i: attributo @lemma) e di informazioni morfologiche (genitivo singolare: attributo @ana). Questo livello di codifica è utile per la visualizzazione (edizione critica), l’analisi testuale, l’interoperabilità e la collazione. L’ultima parte dell’articolo traccia un bilancio dell’edizione di Orso e delinea alcune strategie per velocizzare il flusso del lavoro in vista della futura edizione del Chronicon di Romualdo Salernitano.     L'articolo costituisce una riflessione sulla modellizzazione dei testi appartenenti alla nostra tradizione culturale in questa fase aurorale della Filologia Digitale e parte dalla domanda: che "forma" stiamo dando ai nostri testi? Vengono asplorati tre aspetti per cui i nostri modelli testuali riflettono i nostri presupposti culturali e tecnologici: in primo luogo, il modello gerarchico OHCO che sta alla base di TEI XML; in secondo luogo, il modello sequenziale alfabetico basato sulla stampa delle lingue occidentali, che sta alla base di Unicode. Un terzo aspetto, poi, è il meno esplorato nella ricerca: protocolli per la citazione testuale come CITE/CTS sono basati su corpora specifici. Per esempio, i corpora canonici per i testi greci e latini classici sono il TLG e il PHI 5.3. Ciascuno di questi corpora fissa in una forma canonica l'identificazione degli autori, l'attribuzione delle opere, la delimitazione dei testi, la numerazione di porzioni testuali come paragrafi e versi. Ne scaturisce un dilemma: da una parte, l'interoperabilità richiede che gli URI CTS siano basati su un canone testuale fisso, il che tende ad ostacolare le modifiche al canone da parte dei filologi; d'altra parte, i principi della filologia suggeriscono che gli URI puntino a versioni specifiche dei testi, il che però riduce il potenziale di interoperabilità del protocollo. This article reflects on the modelization of texts of our cultural heritage in the current very early phase of Digital Philology by asking the question: what "form" are we forcing upon our texts? I explore three ways in which our textual models reflect our cultural and technological bias: first, the OHCO hierarchical model behind TEI XML; second, the sequential alphabetical model based on Western print, lying behind Unicode. A third aspect has been less explored in the scholarly discussion: citation protocols such as CITE/CTS are based on specific digital corpora. For example, the canonic corpora for classical Greek and Latin texts are TLG and PHI 5.3. Each of those corpora freezes author identification, authorship attribution, text boundaries, paragraph and line numbering in a specific canonic form. A dilemma arises: on the one side, interoperability requires that CTS URIs are based on a fixed textual canon, which hinders scholarly modifications of that canon; on the other side, the principles of philology suggest that URIs point to specific versions of texts, which in its turn cripples the interoperability potential of the protocol.

    Il contributo si propone di ricostruire la storia della fondazione di due ospedali – Sant’Angelo della Capperina e siri Angelo Grande – che costituirono pezzo significativo della storia assistenziale di Messina prima della ristrutturazione quattro/cinquecentesca: si tratta infatti di ospedali sorti su iniziativa di uomini impegnati nella mercatura, che ad un certo punto della loro esistenza, in scenari diversi e con modalità differenti, si impegnarono nella realizzazione, promozione e gestione di una concreta opera di carità. Particolare attenzione viene data al contesto in cui agirono i promotori delle iniziative assistenziali, alle modalità con cui gli ospedali vennero fondati, alle pratiche economiche atte a procurare, accrescere, mantenere il patrimonio dei due enti caritativi.     This article aims to analyse Francesco Maria Molza’s not certainly attributed novella VII. Even though the text was inspired by one of Franco Sacchetti’s short stories, in the final section the author inserted a quotation-translation of Poggio Bracciolini’s facezia 143. The quotations, translations and reworkings of Bracciolini’s text demonstrate the Renaissance writer’s narrative and stylistic abilities.

    Abstract Obiettivi. Attraverso una lettura storico-artistica di alcuni manufatti collocati nel quartiere romano dell’Eur realizzati tra gli anni trenta e la fine degli anni novanta del Novecento, si vuole tracciare un percorso didattico, culturale e turistico che valorizzi il museo diffuso presente nel quartiere. Metodologia. La metodologia storico-artistica adottata comprende l’analisi del possibile Museo Diffuso analizzato rispetto al contesto spazio-temporale di realizzazione, il rapporto con la committenza, lo studio del profilo biografico e artistico degli autori coinvolti, il confronto con altre aree disciplinari. Risultati. L’intervento mira a tradurre i contributi scientifici sull’argomento in un itinerario culturale e didattico che valorizzi non solo l’arte contemporanea ma riqualifichi un’area che sta diventando sempre più un polo di attrazione per tutto il versante sud-ovest della capitale. Limiti della ricerca. La proposta di tale progetto prevede il coinvolgimento diretto delle istituzioni quali il Comune, le circoscrizioni, il Mibac e il lavoro di un’ equipe con competenze diverse. Implicazioni pratiche. Partendo da una visione dell’arte e del territorio strettamente legata ad un’operatività concreta e non solo teorica, perché non tracciare progetti scientifici e percorsi di turismo culturale legati alle realtà museali dell’Eur, un quartiere sempre più sottoposto a degrado e invece ricco di potenzialità ancora non pienamente espresse? Un quartiere che può divenire un laboratorio di idee sull’architettura, sull’arte contemporanea e sul cinema. Originalità del lavoro. An introduction to the historical artifacts of the Roman district of Eur, made between the thirties and the late nineties, aimed at tracing a path, a cultural exhibition promoting the “open air” Museum in that neighborhood. Methodology. The historical and artistic methodology includes an analysis of the Open air Museum with relation to the context of space and time, the relationship with the customer, the study of biographical and artistic profile of the authors involved, the comparison with other disciplines. Findings. The article aims to translate the scientific contributions on the subject in an exhibition itinerary to enhance an area that is increasingly becoming a pole of attraction for the whole South-West side of the capital. Research limits. The project includes on with direct involvement of institutions such as the Municipality, the districts, the Mibac, and the work of a team with varied skills. Practical implications. Thanks to a practical not only theorical concept of art, I attempt to trace scientific projects and touristic routes linked to the Eur’s Museum. Eur district now increasingly subjected to degradation, althought it is full of resources not yet expressed. Eur district can became a laboratory for new ideas and projects on architecture, contemporary art and cinema. Originality of the study. The ability to combine the development of urban centres, protection of the environment, historical memory, urban renovation with the promotion of contemporary art, in order to promote the present cultural heritage by low cost projects.

    L'incompletezza riassume la maggior parte delle caratteristiche fisiche e immateriali del patrimonio architettonico e produce due conseguenze principali: la sua elevata vulnerabilità e le difficoltà di comprensione. Questo tema offre anche una parola chiave per capire alcune situazioni critiche nei processi di conoscenza, conservazione e valorizzazione sul patrimonio architettonico. Le testimonianze di terra cruda superstiti a Solunto non sono tanto rilevanti per quantità e dimensione, ma forniscono un esempio lampante di questo tema. L’obiettivo di conservare questi pochi lacerti soluntini di architettura in crudo può assumere un maggior senso, se esso si collega, da un lato, alle potenzialità di impiego contemporaneo nello stesso territorio e, dall’altro, alla presenza di mattoni crudi presenti in altri siti archeologici siciliani, che attesta nell’isola quella koinè tecnica grazie alla quale, in antico, tale materiale costruttivo venne utilizzato in tutto il bacino mediterraneo. The incompleteness summarizes most of the physical and intangible features of the architectural heritage. It produces two main consequences: the high vulnerability of the built heritage and the difficulties in understanding it. This theme also provides a key to understanding some critical situation in the processes of knowledge, conservation and enhancement on the architectural heritage. The earthen vestiges in Solunto provide an example of these critical conditions. Some strategies will be outlined to face the urgent need to confront the quickly decaying of most earthen bricks, by now no longer protected by the original structure, due the current condition of incompleteness.

    Tre caratteri salienti dello sviluppo attuale dell’Informatica umanistica sono la sua crescita quantitativa, la sua istituzionalizzazione e la sua definizione disciplinare. Nella prima parte di questo articolo (2. Institutional models) vengono passati in rassegna alcuni modelli istituzionali emergenti nel quadro internazionale. In questo quadro vengono dunque discussi (3. Tools) alcuni concetti chiave nella riflessione sulla disciplina, come quelli di pratica, ‘building’, centro, progetto, prodotto e strumento. In particolare, si contesta che la creazione di strumenti digitali ‘user-friendly’ costituisca il nodo fondamentale per lo sviluppo della disciplina. Bisogna infatti evitare che da un lato un approccio strumentale all'Informatica umanistica, dall'altro strategie di ricerca esclusivamente fondate su singoli progetti e sullo sviluppo di strumenti ‘friendly’, distolgano dal lavoro metodologico necessario per elaborare metodologie informatiche dotate di un reale valore aggiunto rispetto alle pratiche tradizionali della ricerca.

    Nella seconda metà del Seicento i Notarbartolo, grazie alle attività economiche e alle alleanze matrimoniali portate avanti da Francesco senior (1630-1704) e dai suoi due figli, Gaetano (1655-1705) e Placido senior (1657-1701), costruiscono il nucleo del proprio patrimonio fondiario e passano dalla condizione di possidenti e benestanti di Caltanissetta, alla condizione di feudatari di provincia insigniti di un titolo baronale e in possesso di tre feudi di cospicua estensione. La politica matrimoniale adottata mira all’accrescimento del patrimonio e del potere, attraverso la creazione di una rete di alleanze; talvolta i matrimoni garantiscono, tramite l’apporto delle doti, la solidità economica necessaria all’acquisto di un nuovo feudo, in altri casi consentono di creare un legame con una famiglia in difficoltà, al fine di appropriarsi dei suoi possedimenti feudali. Prima ancora di avere effettivamente consolidato il proprio potere a livello locale, alcuni membri della famiglia – prima Placido senior e poi il figlio Francesco junior (1686-1750) – si spostano a vivere nella capitale, mentre il resto della famiglia continua a risiedere nei luoghi della recente affermazione, cooperando nella gestione del patrimonio fondiario. Sarà Francesco junior a traghettare i Notarbartolo nell’Olimpo dell’aristocrazia palermitana, mettendo in atto strategie che poco hanno a che fare con il possesso dei feudi e molto più con la gestione delle cariche pubbliche. Egli approfitta con abilità e lungimiranza della complessa congiuntura politica segnata da repentini cambi di dinastia e riesce a compiere una straordinaria ascesa politica e sociale, costruendo con abilità la propria carriera politica e ottenendo, grazie ad un’intelligente scelta matrimoniale, il titolo di duca di Villarosa. Nei decenni centrali del Settecento, al termine di un percorso di costruzione del potere durato quattro generazioni, con il solidale coinvolgimento di tutti i membri della famiglia in un vero e proprio “gioco di squadra”, i Notarbartolo duchi di Villarosa, spostatisi dalla “periferia” al “centro” del Regno, raggiungono l’acme delle loro fortune, collocandosi a pieno titolo nel novero della grande aristocrazia palermitana. In the second half of the seventeenth century the Notarbartolo family, thanks to their economic activities and the matrimonial alliances promoted by Francesco senior (1630-1704) and by his two sons, Gaetano (1655-1705) and Placido senior (1657-1701), constructs the nucleus of its landed property and passes from the condition of wealthy landowners from Caltanissetta to the condition of feudal lords of the province, honoured with a baronetcy. Even before completing the consolidation of their power on a local level, some members of the family - first Placido senior and then the son Francesco junior (1686-1759) - move to the capital, while the rest of the family continues to reside on the site of their recent affirmation, cooperating in the management of the estate. Francesco junior, with skill and foresight, takes advantage of the complex political situation characterised by sudden changes of the dominant dynasty and makes an extraordinary political and social ascent, constructing his own political career and obtaining, thanks to an opportune marriage, the title of Duke of Villarosa. In the mid-1700s, after a process of power construction that lasted four generations - and with the integral involvement and "teamwork" of all members of the family - the Notarbartolo Dukes di Villarosa reach the acme of their fortune, entering the ranks of the great Sicilian aristocracy.

    Viene presentato l’impianto metodologico e tecnologico dell’edizione critica digitale del De nominedi Orso Beneventano (http://www.unipa.it/paolo.monella/ursus), una proof of concept delle innovazioni metodologiche proposte da Tito Orlandi. Il modello qui sperimentato intende superare la dicotomia tra edizione diplomatica e critica grazie ad un ripensamento profondo, semioticamente fondato, dei livelli di trascrizione e di edizione di un testo. I livelli scelti per questa edizione sono: (1) Livello grafematico, le cui unità minime sono i grafemi, inclusi i segni paragrafematici e le brachilogie sistematiche. Tutti i grafemi individuati dall’editore sono elencati nella Graphemic Table of Signs (GToS), che costituisce parte integrante dell’edizione. (2) Livello alfabetico, le cui unità minime sono le lettere alfabetiche. La GToS riporta il significato alfabetico standard dei grafemi. La codifica a livello alfabetico è fornita esplicitamente dall’editore all’interno di un elemento solo quando essa non sia desumibile dalla codifica grafematica tramite la tabella di corrispondenze fornita nella GToS. (3) Livello linguistico, le cui unità minime sono le parole flesse (), identificate tramite la combinazione di un lemma (lupus, -i: attributo @lemma) e di informazioni morfologiche (genitivo singolare: attributo @ana). Questo livello di codifica è utile per la visualizzazione (edizione critica), l’analisi testuale, l’interoperabilità e la collazione. L’ultima parte dell’articolo traccia un bilancio dell’edizione di Orso e delinea alcune strategie per velocizzare il flusso del lavoro in vista della futura edizione del Chronicon di Romualdo Salernitano.     L'articolo costituisce una riflessione sulla modellizzazione dei testi appartenenti alla nostra tradizione culturale in questa fase aurorale della Filologia Digitale e parte dalla domanda: che "forma" stiamo dando ai nostri testi? Vengono asplorati tre aspetti per cui i nostri modelli testuali riflettono i nostri presupposti culturali e tecnologici: in primo luogo, il modello gerarchico OHCO che sta alla base di TEI XML; in secondo luogo, il modello sequenziale alfabetico basato sulla stampa delle lingue occidentali, che sta alla base di Unicode. Un terzo aspetto, poi, è il meno esplorato nella ricerca: protocolli per la citazione testuale come CITE/CTS sono basati su corpora specifici. Per esempio, i corpora canonici per i testi greci e latini classici sono il TLG e il PHI 5.3. Ciascuno di questi corpora fissa in una forma canonica l'identificazione degli autori, l'attribuzione delle opere, la delimitazione dei testi, la numerazione di porzioni testuali come paragrafi e versi. Ne scaturisce un dilemma: da una parte, l'interoperabilità richiede che gli URI CTS siano basati su un canone testuale fisso, il che tende ad ostacolare le modifiche al canone da parte dei filologi; d'altra parte, i principi della filologia suggeriscono che gli URI puntino a versioni specifiche dei testi, il che però riduce il potenziale di interoperabilità del protocollo. This article reflects on the modelization of texts of our cultural heritage in the current very early phase of Digital Philology by asking the question: what "form" are we forcing upon our texts? I explore three ways in which our textual models reflect our cultural and technological bias: first, the OHCO hierarchical model behind TEI XML; second, the sequential alphabetical model based on Western print, lying behind Unicode. A third aspect has been less explored in the scholarly discussion: citation protocols such as CITE/CTS are based on specific digital corpora. For example, the canonic corpora for classical Greek and Latin texts are TLG and PHI 5.3. Each of those corpora freezes author identification, authorship attribution, text boundaries, paragraph and line numbering in a specific canonic form. A dilemma arises: on the one side, interoperability requires that CTS URIs are based on a fixed textual canon, which hinders scholarly modifications of that canon; on the other side, the principles of philology suggest that URIs point to specific versions of texts, which in its turn cripples the interoperability potential of the protocol.

    Il contributo si propone di ricostruire la storia della fondazione di due ospedali – Sant’Angelo della Capperina e siri Angelo Grande – che costituirono pezzo significativo della storia assistenziale di Messina prima della ristrutturazione quattro/cinquecentesca: si tratta infatti di ospedali sorti su iniziativa di uomini impegnati nella mercatura, che ad un certo punto della loro esistenza, in scenari diversi e con modalità differenti, si impegnarono nella realizzazione, promozione e gestione di una concreta opera di carità. Particolare attenzione viene data al contesto in cui agirono i promotori delle iniziative assistenziali, alle modalità con cui gli ospedali vennero fondati, alle pratiche economiche atte a procurare, accrescere, mantenere il patrimonio dei due enti caritativi.     This article aims to analyse Francesco Maria Molza’s not certainly attributed novella VII. Even though the text was inspired by one of Franco Sacchetti’s short stories, in the final section the author inserted a quotation-translation of Poggio Bracciolini’s facezia 143. The quotations, translations and reworkings of Bracciolini’s text demonstrate the Renaissance writer’s narrative and stylistic abilities.

    Abstract Obiettivi. Attraverso una lettura storico-artistica di alcuni manufatti collocati nel quartiere romano dell’Eur realizzati tra gli anni trenta e la fine degli anni novanta del Novecento, si vuole tracciare un percorso didattico, culturale e turistico che valorizzi il museo diffuso presente nel quartiere. Metodologia. La metodologia storico-artistica adottata comprende l’analisi del possibile Museo Diffuso analizzato rispetto al contesto spazio-temporale di realizzazione, il rapporto con la committenza, lo studio del profilo biografico e artistico degli autori coinvolti, il confronto con altre aree disciplinari. Risultati. L’intervento mira a tradurre i contributi scientifici sull’argomento in un itinerario culturale e didattico che valorizzi non solo l’arte contemporanea ma riqualifichi un’area che sta diventando sempre più un polo di attrazione per tutto il versante sud-ovest della capitale. Limiti della ricerca. La proposta di tale progetto prevede il coinvolgimento diretto delle istituzioni quali il Comune, le circoscrizioni, il Mibac e il lavoro di un’ equipe con competenze diverse. Implicazioni pratiche. Partendo da una visione dell’arte e del territorio strettamente legata ad un’operatività concreta e non solo teorica, perché non tracciare progetti scientifici e percorsi di turismo culturale legati alle realtà museali dell’Eur, un quartiere sempre più sottoposto a degrado e invece ricco di potenzialità ancora non pienamente espresse? Un quartiere che può divenire un laboratorio di idee sull’architettura, sull’arte contemporanea e sul cinema. Originalità del lavoro. La capacità di coniugare la valorizzazione, la tutela, la memoria storica, la riqualificazione del territorio con la promozione ed il potenziamento della cultura contemporanea, partendo dall’esistente, con un contenimento dei costi rispetto ad altre iniziative effimere. An introduction to the historical artifacts of the Roman district of Eur, made between the thirties and the late nineties, aimed at tracing a path, a cultural exhibition promoting the “open air” Museum in that neighborhood. Methodology. The historical and artistic methodology includes an analysis of the Open air Museum with relation to the context of space and time, the relationship with the customer, the study of biographical and artistic profile of the authors involved, the comparison with other disciplines. Findings. The article aims to translate the scientific contributions on the subject in an exhibition itinerary to enhance an area that is increasingly becoming a pole of attraction for the whole South-West side of the capital. Research limits. The project includes on with direct involvement of institutions such as the Municipality, the districts, the Mibac, and the work of a team with varied skills. Practical implications. Thanks to a practical not only theorical concept of art, I attempt to trace scientific projects and touristic routes linked to the Eur’s Museum. Eur district now increasingly subjected to degradation, althought it is full of resources not yet expressed. Eur district can became a laboratory for new ideas and projects on architecture, contemporary art and cinema. Originality of the study. The ability to combine the development of urban centres, protection of the environment, historical memory, urban renovation with the promotion of contemporary art, in order to promote the present cultural heritage by low cost projects.

    L'incompletezza riassume la maggior parte delle caratteristiche fisiche e immateriali del patrimonio architettonico e produce due conseguenze principali: la sua elevata vulnerabilità e le difficoltà di comprensione. Questo tema offre anche una parola chiave per capire alcune situazioni critiche nei processi di conoscenza, conservazione e valorizzazione sul patrimonio architettonico. Le testimonianze di terra cruda superstiti a Solunto non sono tanto rilevanti per quantità e dimensione, ma forniscono un esempio lampante di questo tema. L’obiettivo di conservare questi pochi lacerti soluntini di architettura in crudo può assumere un maggior senso, se esso si collega, da un lato, alle potenzialità di impiego contemporaneo nello stesso territorio e, dall’altro, alla presenza di mattoni crudi presenti in altri siti archeologici siciliani, che attesta nell’isola quella koinè tecnica grazie alla quale, in antico, tale materiale costruttivo venne utilizzato in tutto il bacino mediterraneo. The incompleteness summarizes most of the physical and intangible features of the architectural heritage. It produces two main consequences: the high vulnerability of the built heritage and the difficulties in understanding it. This theme also provides a key to understanding some critical situation in the processes of knowledge, conservation and enhancement on the architectural heritage. The earthen vestiges in Solunto provide an example of these critical conditions. Some strategies will be outlined to face the urgent need to confront the quickly decaying of most earthen bricks, by now no longer protected by the original structure, due the current condition of incompleteness.

    Tre caratteri salienti dello sviluppo attuale dell’Informatica umanistica sono la sua crescita quantitativa, la sua istituzionalizzazione e la sua definizione disciplinare. Nella prima parte di questo articolo (2. Institutional models) vengono passati in rassegna alcuni modelli istituzionali emergenti nel quadro internazionale. In questo quadro vengono dunque discussi (3. Tools) alcuni concetti chiave nella riflessione sulla disciplina, come quelli di pratica, ‘building’, centro, progetto, prodotto e strumento. In particolare, si contesta che la creazione di strumenti digitali ‘user-friendly’ costituisca il nodo fondamentale per lo sviluppo della disciplina. Bisogna infatti evitare che da un lato un approccio strumentale all'Informatica umanistica, dall'altro strategie di ricerca esclusivamente fondate su singoli progetti e sullo sviluppo di strumenti ‘friendly’, distolgano dal lavoro metodologico necessario per elaborare metodologie informatiche dotate di un reale valore aggiunto rispetto alle pratiche tradizionali della ricerca.

    Nella seconda metà del Seicento i Notarbartolo, grazie alle attività economiche e alle alleanze matrimoniali portate avanti da Francesco senior (1630-1704) e dai suoi due figli, Gaetano (1655-1705) e Placido senior (1657-1701), costruiscono il nucleo del proprio patrimonio fondiario e passano dalla condizione di possidenti e benestanti di Caltanissetta, alla condizione di feudatari di provincia insigniti di un titolo baronale e in possesso di tre feudi di cospicua estensione. La politica matrimoniale adottata mira all’accrescimento del patrimonio e del potere, attraverso la creazione di una rete di alleanze; talvolta i matrimoni garantiscono, tramite l’apporto delle doti, la solidità economica necessaria all’acquisto di un nuovo feudo, in altri casi consentono di creare un legame con una famiglia in difficoltà, al fine di appropriarsi dei suoi possedimenti feudali. Prima ancora di avere effettivamente consolidato il proprio potere a livello locale, alcuni membri della famiglia – prima Placido senior e poi il figlio Francesco junior (1686-1750) – si spostano a vivere nella capitale, mentre il resto della famiglia continua a risiedere nei luoghi della recente affermazione, cooperando nella gestione del patrimonio fondiario. Sarà Francesco junior a traghettare i Notarbartolo nell’Olimpo dell’aristocrazia palermitana, mettendo in atto strategie che poco hanno a che fare con il possesso dei feudi e molto più con la gestione delle cariche pubbliche. Egli approfitta con abilità e lungimiranza della complessa congiuntura politica segnata da repentini cambi di dinastia e riesce a compiere una straordinaria ascesa politica e sociale, costruendo con abilità la propria carriera politica e ottenendo, grazie ad un’intelligente scelta matrimoniale, il titolo di duca di Villarosa. Nei decenni centrali del Settecento, al termine di un percorso di costruzione del potere durato quattro generazioni, con il solidale coinvolgimento di tutti i membri della famiglia in un vero e proprio “gioco di squadra”, i Notarbartolo duchi di Villarosa, spostatisi dalla “periferia” al “centro” del Regno, raggiungono l’acme delle loro fortune, collocandosi a pieno titolo nel novero della grande aristocrazia palermitana. In the second half of the seventeenth century the Notarbartolo family, thanks to their economic activities and the matrimonial alliances promoted by Francesco senior (1630-1704) and by his two sons, Gaetano (1655-1705) and Placido senior (1657-1701), constructs the nucleus of its landed property and passes from the condition of wealthy landowners from Caltanissetta to the condition of feudal lords of the province, honoured with a baronetcy. Even before completing the consolidation of their power on a local level, some members of the family - first Placido senior and then the son Francesco junior (1686-1759) - move to the capital, while the rest of the family continues to reside on the site of their recent affirmation, cooperating in the management of the estate. Francesco junior, with skill and foresight, takes advantage of the complex political situation characterised by sudden changes of the dominant dynasty and makes an extraordinary political and social ascent, constructing his own political career and obtaining, thanks to an opportune marriage, the title of Duke of Villarosa. In the mid-1700s, after a process of power construction that lasted four generations - and with the integral involvement and "teamwork" of all members of the family - the Notarbartolo Dukes di Villarosa reach the acme of their fortune, entering the ranks of the great Sicilian aristocracy.
