Abstract: This article revisits the trilogy of works produced by Luis Eduardo Aute in 2012 about his experience in post-World War II Manila: the short film El niño y el basilisco, the album El niño que miraba el mar and the comic El niño y el basilisco. The works are presented as continuing two traditions, that of cultural production on historical memory in Spain and that of testimonies on World War II in Manila. The singularity of these works as an immersive, transmedia, and elaborated expression of the traumatic experience is highlighted.

Abstract: Transnational Philippines: Cultural Encounters in Philippine Literature in Spanish approaches literature that has been forgotten or neglected in studies on other literatures in Spanish due, in part, to the fact that today Spanish is no longer spoken in the Philippines or in Asia. However, isolation has not always been the case, and by omitting Philippine literature in Spanish from the picture of world literatures and Spanish-language literatures, the landscape of these disciplines is incomplete. Transnational Philippines studies how this literary production stemmed from its relationship with other cultures, literature, and arts. It attempts to break this literature’s isolation and show how it is part of the broad literary system of literature written in Spanish. Yet Transnational Philippines also questions the constraints of traditional literary genres in order to make room for Philippine texts and other colonial and postcolonial texts, so that those texts can be taken into consideration in literary studies. Its chapters elaborate on the problems surrounding the cultural and identity relations of the Philippines with other regions and the literary nature of Philippine texts. By addressing the need for a postnational approach to Spanish-language Philippine literature, the book challenges the Spain/Latin America dichotomy existing in Spanish language literary studies and leans toward a global conception of the Hispanophone.

Abstract: This chapter examines from a decolonial perspective the rewritings of Spanish chronicles of the presence of the Chinese pirate Limahong in the Philippines by nineteenth- and twentieth-century Filipino writers. In these rewritings, the authors subtly shift the perspective on the pirate and question the history as handed down to them by the Spanish colonial power. In this way, the texts on Limahong reflect the social tensions of the late 19th century (around the Philippine revolution) and the 1960s, when the country was under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. In addition, an unpublished text is recovered, perhaps the last Filipino novel in Spanish from the classic period: "La aventura de Limahong" by Antonio Abad (1963).

Abstract: Marianne Meets the Mormons is an elaborate academic work that describes how various representations of Mormonism in nineteenth-century France also functioned as a tool to discuss key French issues of “religion, politics, socialism, gender, the family, and colonialism”. Heather Belnap, Corry Cropper, and Daryl Lee, professors at Brigham Young University joined forces to produce this impressive analysis of the many facets of Mormonism that fascinated French authors. Typical French social and political questions, gender issues, and spiritual practices are examined by comparison with Mormon phenomena. The book throws a vivid light, more on nineteenth-century France than on Mormonism which was looked at through the prism of prejudice or fantasy. This review also expresses a number of critical concerns, dealing with methodology, quantitative validity, and the ekphrastic approach of the artistic dimension.

Abstract: Our ordinary conception of time has it that there are temporal particulars: not only do people do things, but there are particular doings by people; not only are we born, but the birth of each one of us was a particular event, and each of us will have our own particular death. Temporal particulars in this sense are individuated, fundamentally, by their temporal locations or relations, rather than by their intrinsic or qualitative characteristics. In this respect they are unrepeatable, not just de facto, but as a matter of their very nature. However, there is a tradition in philosophy that seriously downplays this aspect of our thinking about time. According to this tradition, the fundamental unit of temporal representation is tensed truth; the notion of an unrepeatable particular, individuated by its temporal location, is at best an abstraction from a complex of tensed truths. The aims of this paper are, first, to argue that the representation of temporal particulars is deeply implicated in our ordinary conception of the past as fixed and unalterable; and, secondly, to argue that the theorist of tensed truth is able to provide only a pale imitation of this aspect of our thinking. I will then reflect on the consequences of this for debates about the metaphysics of tense.

Abstract: In this article, different experimental attempts to measure the velocity-dependency of the electron’s mass will be discussed. These experiments were carried out between 1901 and 1916 by Walter Kaufmann, Alfred Bucherer, Günther Neumann, and Charles-Eugène Guye together with Charles Lavanchy. They all attempted to capture this effect on photographic plates, such that it could then be measured afterward as precisely as the plates allowed for. It will be argued that two different approaches to the production of precise photographic plates can be distinguished: one that conceptualized precision in terms of qualitative plates, and one that attempted to achieve it through quantity. In the final part of the article, it will then be argued that these two approaches were shaped both by the specific radiating materials at hand as well as by the intellectual context in which the scientists involved were working.

Abstract: The Black Death and subsequent plague waves killed millions in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Although these traumatic events unsettled social relations, economic production, and cultural values, scholars have also stressed their positive impact on living standards. Already from the nineteenth century on, scholars have characterised the period as the Golden Age for labour. Yet, some historians have been more sceptical about the evidence. This thesis takes these comments at heart by critically examining income, work time, and wealth to determine the true scope of the Golden Age across time, space, and social groups. Thanks to a comparison between the Republic of Florence and the Southern Low Countries, we show that the plague pandemic did not result in a universal increase in living standards. In the last-mentioned region, the income and wealth of most households reached unprecedented heights because of a type of industrious revolution. In stark contrast, such a positive evolution was absent in the Republic of Florence outside the capital. Here, only the ruling elites were able to increase their fortunes due to protectionist measures, the spread of exploitive forms of urban landownership, and increasing fiscal pressure to finance the many wars.
