description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Contribution for newspaper or weekly magazine , Other literature type , Article 2019 France, Denmark EnglishPublisher:HAL CCSD Nielbo, Kristoffer L.; Perner, Mads L.; Larsen, Christian; Nielsen, Jonas; Laursen, Ditte;Saxo Grammaticus’ medieval source Gesta Danorum (“Deeds of the Danes”) represents the beginning of the modern historical research in Denmark. The bipartite composition of Gesta Danorum has however been subject to much academic debate. In particular the nature and location of a transition between early Pre-Christian and late Christian content have given rise to two competing accounts. In this paper, we argue that the debate can be represented as a problem of intratextual dynamics and we combine models from Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing with techniques for time series analysis in order to reevaluate the debate. Results indicate that the transition is gradual, starting in book eight and ending in book ten, but that a point-like interpretation is possible in book nine. We argue that the approach exemplifies scalable“automated close reading”, which has multiple applications in text-based historical research.Change Detection, Cultural Heritage, Medieval Literature, Text Analysis, Topic Modeling

While there is now a wide variety of uses in different fields from social network analysis (Ables et al., 2017) to the study of document circulation metadata (Grandjean, 2016) or literature and linguistic data (Maryl and Elder, 2017), many projects highlight the difficulty of bringing graph theory and their discipline into dialogue. Fortunately, the development of accessible software (Bastian et al., 2009), followed by new interfaces (Rosa Pérez et al., 2018; Wieneke et al., 2016), sometimes with an educational dimension (Beaulieu, 2017; Xanthos et al., 2016), has been accompanied in recent years by a critical reflection on our practices (Weingart, 2011; Kaufman et al., 2017), particularly with regard to visualisation. Yet, it often focuses on technical aspects. In this paper, we propose to shift this emphasis and address the question of the researcher’s interpretative journey from visualisation to metrics resulting from the network structure. Often addressed in relation to graphical representation, when it is not used only as an illustration, the subjectivity of translation is all the more important when it comes to interpreting structural metrics. The production rates and the inclusive cross sections of the isovector meson $\pi^0$, the isoscalar mesons $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime(958)$, the strange meson $\mathrm{K^0_S}$ and the $\Lambda$ baryon have been measured as functions of scaled energy in hadronic events two-jet events and each jet of three-jet events from hadronic Z decays and compared to Monte Carlo models. The analysis is based on 3.7~million hadronic events collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=91.2$~GeV. The JETSET modelling of the gluon fragmentation into isoscalar mesons is found to be in agreement with the experimental results. HERWIG fails to describe the $\mathrm{K^0_S}$ spectra in gluon-enriched jets and the $\Lambda$ spectra in quark jets.
