    Our goal is to create guidelines for contemplating inclusion in digital cultural heritage collections, that helps practitioners consciously think about new digital paradigms of cultural memory. Our paper will show our current work on a catalogue of digital collections, four case studies, and a workshop, that examines issues related to inclusivity.

    This article investigates to what extent it is possible to establish an image philosophy to read digital images, in this specific case, applying the concepts in the areas of glitch art. For this, we sought, through a systematic literature review, general definitions about the terms of the image and developed a possible approach for reading digital images that have intrusive aesthetic data from the operation of technical apparatus. The study takes place as a theoretical reflection that does not aim to “solve” all the questions about reading images, but it can bring up the possibility of interpreting the images that inhabit the digital universe.     Las investigaciones arqueológicas realizadas en el sector oeste de la comisaría de Tamanché, Yucatán, localizada al norte de Mérida, nos proporcionaron las muestras para realizar dataciones arqueomagnéticas de dos hornos de cal excavados en el sitio. Los hornos se hallaban en la periferia del sitio arqueológico, al suroeste del núcleo principal de Tamanché. Los contextos arqueológicos se encuentran en un espacio de múltiples ocupaciones y con evidencias de construcciones prehispánicas e históricas. En este artículo presentamos los resultados de las dataciones y análisis de las muestras recuperadas en dichos contextos, lo cual nos permite conocer la temperatura que alcanzaron los hornos al ser utilizados para producir cal, así como fechar el último momento de quema que se realizó en su interior. Los resultados de las dataciones nos indican un proceso de reutilización de los hornos desde el Clásico Tardío hasta el periodo histórico, donde las temperaturas de calcinación alcanzan un promedio de 800 °C. Ambos datos permiten correlacionar los hornos de Tamanché con los otros hornos analizados como parte del Proyecto Arqueológico Norte de Ichkaantijoo. ENGLISH: Archaeological investigations carried out in the western sector of the Tamanche police station (north of Merida, Yucatan) have provided us with samples for the archaeomagnetic dating of two lime kilns excavated at the site. The furnaces were found on the periphery of the archaeological site, which lies southwest of the center of Tamanche. The archaeological contexts are located in a space of multiple occupations with evidence of pre-Hispanic and historical constructions. In this paper we present the results of the dating and analysis of the samples recovered, which have allowed us to ascertain the temperature reached by the kilns when they were used in lime production, as well as to date the most recent instance of burning that took place inside them. The dating results indicate a process of reuse of the kilns from the Late Classic to the historical period, where calcination temperatures reached an average of 800 °C. Both sets of data allow us to correlate the Tamanche kilns with the other furnaces analyzed as part of the Northern Ichkaantijoo Archaeological Project.

    En el presente trabajo se muestran los resultados arqueométricos de una colección de objetos reconocidos como símbolos de poder dentro de la sociedad tarasca del Posclásico Tardío en Michoacán, México (~1350-1522 d. C.): orejeras, besotes, arcos, flechas, rodelas y algunas de sus armas como las hachas. A partir de esta caracterización, además del análisis de su función y simbología dentro de las normas morales y la cosmovisión de esa sociedad, se explora el papel de los señores uacúsecha en la guerra y sus principales funciones cohesivas a favor de ese imperio. ENGLISH: This paper presents the archaeometric results of a collection of objects recognized as symbols of power within the Late Postclassic Tarascan society in Michoacan, Mexico (~1350-1522 AD): earplugs, lip plugs, bows, arrows, circular metal sheets, and weapons such as axes. We then use these results to analyze the role and symbolism of these objects within the worldview of that society and to explore the role of the Uacusecha lords in war and in cohesion of the empire.

    Los hornos para la producción de cal excavados en el área maya pueden considerarse artefactos idóneos para los estudios arqueomagnéticos debido a que el proceso de producción requiere temperaturas generalmente superiores a 700 °C. Este hecho garantiza que las paredes y los pisos de los hornos sean portadores de la magnetización termorremanente estable, adquirida durante el enfriamiento desde altas temperaturas a partir de su último uso. Fueron desmagnetizadas térmicamente 12 muestras de un total de 17 recolectadas y orientadas in situ, dentro del horno localizado en Sitpach, Mérida, con la finalidad de obtener sus arqueodirecciones (declinación e inclinación) características. Las direcciones medias fueron determinadas sobre las 7 muestras con mayor agrupamiento. La datación arqueomagnética arrojó dos posibles intervalos: 267-671 d. C. y 1279-1455 d. C. Basándonos en las consideraciones cronológicas relativas de la zona, el segundo intervalo parece más factible. Esta nueva aportación cronológica absoluta, junto con las reportadas anteriormente, permitió registrar la continuidad y permanencia en el área maya del conocimiento pirotecnológico sobre el uso de hornos de cal, de manera ininterrumpida, desde el 900 hasta, al menos, el 1600 d. C.; involucrando el inicio del periodo colonial, donde fueron reactivados algunos hornos probablemente construidos antes de la conquista española. ENGLISH: Lime kilns excavated in the Mayan area may be considered suitable artifacts for archaeomagnetic studies because the production process generally requires temperatures higher than 700 °C. This fact guarantees that the walls and floors of the furnaces carry the stable thermoremanent magnetization acquired during the cooling from high temperatures during its last use. 12 of a total of 17 samples, collected and oriented in situ inside the furnace located in Sitpach, Merida were thermally demagnetized in order to obtain their characteristic archeodirections (declination and inclination). The site-mean direction was determined based on 7 samples with greater clustering. Archaeomagnetic dating yielded two possible intervals: 267–671 AD and 1279–1455 AD. Based on relative chronological considerations of the area, the second interval seems more feasible. This new absolute chronological contribution, together with those previously reported, indicates the continuity and permanence of pyrotechnological knowledge in the Maya area from 900 to at least 1600 AD, including the beginning of the colonial period, in which some furnaces, probably built before the Spanish conquest, were reactivated.

    This is a study of the key role of Hugh Blair, a Scottish Enlightened scholar and minister, in the understanding and teaching of rhetoric in a quarrelsome 19th-Century Mexico. His role as a master of multiple rhetorical forms, including legal prose, literary production and the sermon, emphasized effective communication to a broadening public audience in an age of expanding citizenship. First his Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, and then several selections of his sermons, were introduced in Spanish to the Mexican public. Somewhat surprisingly, his works were highly celebrated and widely recommended, by persons on the whole political spectrum, with virtually no discussion of Blair’s political concerns or religious faith. His approach was useful, it was made clear, in a more fluid society aimed at modernization, but simultaneously contained a top-down view of life in society which seriously restricted sensitivity to the voice of common people. This article discusses his general acclaim and those limitations within the context of local and Atlantic history, taking into account the critical views of some of the numerous authors who have studied Blair’s work and his enormous influence during the 19th century. In the perspectives offered, his impact can be judged more critically in terms of an undoubtedly changing Mexican political culture, but one simultaneously opening and closing admission to effective citizenship.     Here we report the discovery of an Archaic period stemmed and barbed point from the site of Tenam Puente, Chiapas, Mexico. The point was discovered in the rubble fill used to modify a large Late Classic to Early Postclassic period plaza. The point bears a strong resemblance to Lowe points (12000–9300 CalBP) recovered from Belize, and Pedernales-style points discovered elsewhere in Mesoamerica (8700 CalBP). It is the second point of this style identified from highland Chiapas to date. SPANISH: El artículo reporta el hallazgo de una punta de proyectil del periodo Arcaico, con pedúnculo y aletas, del sitio arqueológico Tenam Puente, Chiapas, México. La punta se ubicó en el relleno de cantos de piedra caliza utilizados para modificar una gran plaza del periodo de transición entre el Clásico Tardío y el Posclásico Temprano. La forma de la punta de proyectil es muy parecida a las puntas Lowe (12000–9300 CalBP) halladas en Belice y a las puntas de estilo Pedernales localizadas en otras partes de Mesoamérica (8700 CalBP). Es la segunda punta de este estilo encontrada en los Altos de Chiapas hasta la fecha.

    Abstract This paper analyzed the chemical composition of archaeological pottery produced by hunter-gatherers and horticulturist populations of the late Holocene of the lower Paraná basin. An energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer was used to analyze the chemical composition of the sherds. The results obtained indicated that the analyzed samples, within certain parameters, showed some variability. The differences were even more significant when comparing the chemical composition of the pottery of the hunter-gatherer groups and that of the horticulturists. The main components identified in the archaeological pottery were grouped primarily with the location of production, that is, they were the result of local manufacturing. Within the trace-elements, the greatest variations in composition were observed in the strontium, which was assumed to vary in concentration levels throughout the region. Resumo Este artigo analisou a composição mineralógica da cerâmica arqueológica produzida por populações de caçadores-coletores e horticultores do Holoceno tardio na parte baixa da bacia do Paraná. Para analisar a composição química dos fragmentos foi utilizado um espectrômetro de fluorescência de raios X de energia dispersiva. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que as amostras analisadas, dentro de certos parâmetros, apresentaram alguma variabilidade. As diferenças foram ainda mais significativas quando se compararam a composição química da cerâmica dos grupos caçadores-coletores com a dos horticultores. Os componentes principais identificados nas cerâmicas arqueológicas foram agrupados de acordo com o local de produção, isto é, resultaram de confecção local. Quanto aos elementos-traço, a maior variação foi relacionada ao estrôncio, que foi assumido variar em níveis de concentração em toda a região.

    This article investigates to what extent it is possible to establish an image philosophy to read digital images, in this specific case, applying the concepts in the areas of glitch art. For this, we sought, through a systematic literature review, general definitions about the terms of the image and developed a possible approach for reading digital images that have intrusive aesthetic data from the operation of technical apparatus. The study takes place as a theoretical reflection that does not aim to “solve” all the questions about reading images, but it can bring up the possibility of interpreting the images that inhabit the digital universe.     Las investigaciones arqueológicas realizadas en el sector oeste de la comisaría de Tamanché, Yucatán, localizada al norte de Mérida, nos proporcionaron las muestras para realizar dataciones arqueomagnéticas de dos hornos de cal excavados en el sitio. Los hornos se hallaban en la periferia del sitio arqueológico, al suroeste del núcleo principal de Tamanché. Los contextos arqueológicos se encuentran en un espacio de múltiples ocupaciones y con evidencias de construcciones prehispánicas e históricas. En este artículo presentamos los resultados de las dataciones y análisis de las muestras recuperadas en dichos contextos, lo cual nos permite conocer la temperatura que alcanzaron los hornos al ser utilizados para producir cal, así como fechar el último momento de quema que se realizó en su interior. Los resultados de las dataciones nos indican un proceso de reutilización de los hornos desde el Clásico Tardío hasta el periodo histórico, donde las temperaturas de calcinación alcanzan un promedio de 800 °C. Ambos datos permiten correlacionar los hornos de Tamanché con los otros hornos analizados como parte del Proyecto Arqueológico Norte de Ichkaantijoo. ENGLISH: Archaeological investigations carried out in the western sector of the Tamanche police station (north of Merida, Yucatan) have provided us with samples for the archaeomagnetic dating of two lime kilns excavated at the site. The furnaces were found on the periphery of the archaeological site, which lies southwest of the center of Tamanche. The archaeological contexts are located in a space of multiple occupations with evidence of pre-Hispanic and historical constructions. In this paper we present the results of the dating and analysis of the samples recovered, which have allowed us to ascertain the temperature reached by the kilns when they were used in lime production, as well as to date the most recent instance of burning that took place inside them. The dating results indicate a process of reuse of the kilns from the Late Classic to the historical period, where calcination temperatures reached an average of 800 °C. Both sets of data allow us to correlate the Tamanche kilns with the other furnaces analyzed as part of the Northern Ichkaantijoo Archaeological Project.

    En el presente trabajo se muestran los resultados arqueométricos de una colección de objetos reconocidos como símbolos de poder dentro de la sociedad tarasca del Posclásico Tardío en Michoacán, México (~1350-1522 d. C.): orejeras, besotes, arcos, flechas, rodelas y algunas de sus armas como las hachas. A partir de esta caracterización, además del análisis de su función y simbología dentro de las normas morales y la cosmovisión de esa sociedad, se explora el papel de los señores uacúsecha en la guerra y sus principales funciones cohesivas a favor de ese imperio. ENGLISH: This paper presents the archaeometric results of a collection of objects recognized as symbols of power within the Late Postclassic Tarascan society in Michoacan, Mexico (~1350-1522 AD): earplugs, lip plugs, bows, arrows, circular metal sheets, and weapons such as axes. We then use these results to analyze the role and symbolism of these objects within the worldview of that society and to explore the role of the Uacusecha lords in war and in cohesion of the empire.

    Los hornos para la producción de cal excavados en el área maya pueden considerarse artefactos idóneos para los estudios arqueomagnéticos debido a que el proceso de producción requiere temperaturas generalmente superiores a 700 °C. Este hecho garantiza que las paredes y los pisos de los hornos sean portadores de la magnetización termorremanente estable, adquirida durante el enfriamiento desde altas temperaturas a partir de su último uso. Fueron desmagnetizadas térmicamente 12 muestras de un total de 17 recolectadas y orientadas in situ, dentro del horno localizado en Sitpach, Mérida, con la finalidad de obtener sus arqueodirecciones (declinación e inclinación) características. Las direcciones medias fueron determinadas sobre las 7 muestras con mayor agrupamiento. La datación arqueomagnética arrojó dos posibles intervalos: 267-671 d. C. y 1279-1455 d. C. Basándonos en las consideraciones cronológicas relativas de la zona, el segundo intervalo parece más factible. Esta nueva aportación cronológica absoluta, junto con las reportadas anteriormente, permitió registrar la continuidad y permanencia en el área maya del conocimiento pirotecnológico sobre el uso de hornos de cal, de manera ininterrumpida, desde el 900 hasta, al menos, el 1600 d. C.; involucrando el inicio del periodo colonial, donde fueron reactivados algunos hornos probablemente construidos antes de la conquista española. ENGLISH: Lime kilns excavated in the Mayan area may be considered suitable artifacts for archaeomagnetic studies because the production process generally requires temperatures higher than 700 °C. This fact guarantees that the walls and floors of the furnaces carry the stable thermoremanent magnetization acquired during the cooling from high temperatures during its last use. 12 of a total of 17 samples, collected and oriented in situ inside the furnace located in Sitpach, Merida were thermally demagnetized in order to obtain their characteristic archeodirections (declination and inclination). The site-mean direction was determined based on 7 samples with greater clustering. Archaeomagnetic dating yielded two possible intervals: 267–671 AD and 1279–1455 AD. Based on relative chronological considerations of the area, the second interval seems more feasible. This new absolute chronological contribution, together with those previously reported, indicates the continuity and permanence of pyrotechnological knowledge in the Maya area from 900 to at least 1600 AD, including the beginning of the colonial period, in which some furnaces, probably built before the Spanish conquest, were reactivated.

    This is a study of the key role of Hugh Blair, a Scottish Enlightened scholar and minister, in the understanding and teaching of rhetoric in a quarrelsome 19th-Century Mexico. His role as a master of multiple rhetorical forms, including legal prose, literary production and the sermon, emphasized effective communication to a broadening public audience in an age of expanding citizenship. First his Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, and then several selections of his sermons, were introduced in Spanish to the Mexican public. Somewhat surprisingly, his works were highly celebrated and widely recommended, by persons on the whole political spectrum, with virtually no discussion of Blair’s political concerns or religious faith. His approach was useful, it was made clear, in a more fluid society aimed at modernization, but simultaneously contained a top-down view of life in society which seriously restricted sensitivity to the voice of common people. This article discusses his general acclaim and those limitations within the context of local and Atlantic history, taking into account the critical views of some of the numerous authors who have studied Blair’s work and his enormous influence during the 19th century. In the perspectives offered, his impact can be judged more critically in terms of an undoubtedly changing Mexican political culture, but one simultaneously opening and closing admission to effective citizenship.     Here we report the discovery of an Archaic period stemmed and barbed point from the site of Tenam Puente, Chiapas, Mexico. The point was discovered in the rubble fill used to modify a large Late Classic to Early Postclassic period plaza. The point bears a strong resemblance to Lowe points (12000–9300 CalBP) recovered from Belize, and Pedernales-style points discovered elsewhere in Mesoamerica (8700 CalBP). It is the second point of this style identified from highland Chiapas to date. SPANISH: El artículo reporta el hallazgo de una punta de proyectil del periodo Arcaico, con pedúnculo y aletas, del sitio arqueológico Tenam Puente, Chiapas, México. La punta se ubicó en el relleno de cantos de piedra caliza utilizados para modificar una gran plaza del periodo de transición entre el Clásico Tardío y el Posclásico Temprano. La forma de la punta de proyectil es muy parecida a las puntas Lowe (12000–9300 CalBP) halladas en Belice y a las puntas de estilo Pedernales localizadas en otras partes de Mesoamérica (8700 CalBP). Es la segunda punta de este estilo encontrada en los Altos de Chiapas hasta la fecha.

    Abstract This paper analyzed the chemical composition of archaeological pottery produced by hunter-gatherers and horticulturist populations of the late Holocene of the lower Paraná basin. An energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer was used to analyze the chemical composition of the sherds. The results obtained indicated that the analyzed samples, within certain parameters, showed some variability. The differences were even more significant when comparing the chemical composition of the pottery of the hunter-gatherer groups and that of the horticulturists. The main components identified in the archaeological pottery were grouped primarily with the location of production, that is, they were the result of local manufacturing. Within the trace-elements, the greatest variations in composition were observed in the strontium, which was assumed to vary in concentration levels throughout the region. Resumo Este artigo analisou a composição mineralógica da cerâmica arqueológica produzida por populações de caçadores-coletores e horticultores do Holoceno tardio na parte baixa da bacia do Paraná. Para analisar a composição química dos fragmentos foi utilizado um espectrômetro de fluorescência de raios X de energia dispersiva. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que as amostras analisadas, dentro de certos parâmetros, apresentaram alguma variabilidade. As diferenças foram ainda mais significativas quando se compararam a composição química da cerâmica dos grupos caçadores-coletores com a dos horticultores. Os componentes principais identificados nas cerâmicas arqueológicas foram agrupados de acordo com o local de produção, isto é, resultaram de confecção local. Quanto aos elementos-traço, a maior variação foi relacionada ao estrôncio, que foi assumido variar em níveis de concentração em toda a região.
