    The foundation models based on pre-training technology have significantly advanced artificial intelligence from theoretical to practical applications. These models have facilitated the feasibility of computer-aided diagnosis for widespread use. Medical contrastive vision-language pre-training, which does not require human annotations, is an effective approach for guiding representation learning using description information in diagnostic reports. However, the effectiveness of pre-training is limited by the large-scale semantic overlap and shifting problems in medical field. To address these issues, we propose the Knowledge-Boosting Contrastive Vision-Language Pre-training framework (KoBo), which integrates clinical knowledge into the learning of vision-language semantic consistency. The framework uses an unbiased, open-set sample-wise knowledge representation to measure negative sample noise and supplement the correspondence between vision-language mutual information and clinical knowledge. Extensive experiments validate the effect of our framework on eight tasks including classification, segmentation, retrieval, and semantic relatedness, achieving comparable or better performance with the zero-shot or few-shot settings.     Word vector representations enable machines to encode human language for spoken language understanding and processing. Confusion2vec, motivated from human speech production and perception, is a word vector representation which encodes ambiguities present in human spoken language in addition to semantics and syntactic information. Confusion2vec provides a robust spoken language representation by considering inherent human language ambiguities. In this paper, we propose a novel word vector space estimation by unsupervised learning on lattices output by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system. We encode each word in Confusion2vec vector space by its constituent subword character n-grams. We show that the subword encoding helps better represent the acoustic perceptual ambiguities in human spoken language via information modeled on lattice-structured ASR output. The usefulness of the proposed Confusion2vec representation is evaluated using analogy and word similarity tasks designed for assessing semantic, syntactic and acoustic word relations. We also show the benefits of subword modeling for acoustic ambiguity representation on the task of spoken language intent detection. The results significantly outperform existing word vector representations when evaluated on erroneous ASR outputs, providing improvements up-to 13.12% relative to previous state-of-the-art in intent detection on ATIS benchmark dataset. We demonstrate that Confusion2vec subword modeling eliminates the need for retraining/adapting the natural language understanding models on ASR transcripts.

    Pattern formation, arising from systems of autonomous reaction-diffusion equations, on networks has become a common topic of study in the scientific literature. In this work we focus primarily on directed networks. Although some work prior has been done to understand how patterns arise on directed networks, these works have restricted their attentions to networks for whom the Laplacian matrix (corresponding to the network) is diagonalizable. Here, we address the question "how does one detect pattern formation if the Laplacian matrix is not diagonalizable?" To this end, we find it is useful to also address the related problem of pattern formation arising from systems of reaction-diffusion equations with non-local (global) reaction kinetics. These results are then generalized to include non-autonomous systems as well as temporal networks, i.e., networks whose topology is allowed to change in time.

    To enable the accelerated discovery of materials with desirable properties, it is critical to develop accurate and efficient search algorithms. Quantum annealers and similar quantum-inspired optimizers have the potential to provide accelerated computation for certain combinatorial optimization challenges. However, they have not been exploited for materials discovery due to absence of compatible optimization mapping methods. Here we show that by combining cluster expansion with a quantum-inspired superposition technique, we can lever quantum annealers in chemical space exploration for the first time. This approach enables us to accelerate the search of materials with desirable properties order 10-50 times faster than genetic algorithms and bayesian optimizations, with a significant improvement in ground state prediction accuracy. Levering this, we search chemical space for discovery of acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and find a promising previously unexplored chemical family of Ru-Cr-Mn-Sb-O$_2$. The best catalyst in this chemical family show a mass activity 8 times higher than state-of-art RuO$_2$ and maintain performance for 180 hours while operating at 10mA/cm$^2$ in acidic 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte.

    What happens when a warp bubble has mass? This seemingly innocent question forces one to carefully formalize exactly what one means by a warp bubble, exactly what one means by having the warp bubble "move" with respect to the fixed stars, and forces one to more carefully examine the notion of mass in warp-drive spacetimes. This is the goal of the present article. In this process, we will see that often-made throw-away comments regarding "payloads" are even simpler than commonly assumed, while there are two further, distinct yet subtle ways in which a mass can appear in connection with a warp drive space-time: One, that the warp bubble (not its payload) has the mass; two, that the mass is a background feature in front of which the warp drive moves. For simplicity, we consider generic Nat\'ario warp drives with zero-vorticity flow field. The resulting spacetimes are sufficiently simple to allow an exact and fully explicit computation of all of the stress-energy components, and verify that (as expected) the null energy condition (NEC) is violated. Likewise the weak, strong, and dominant energy conditions (WEC, SEC, DEC) are violated. Indeed, this confirms the community's folk wisdom, and recent (fully general, but implicit) results of the present authors which closed previous gaps in the argument.     We describe a model that explains possibly indecisive choice behavior, that is, quasi-choices (choice correspondences that may be empty on some menus). The justification is here provided by a proportion of ballots, which are quasi-choices rationalizable by an arbitrary binary relation. We call a quasi-choice $s$-majoritarian if all options selected from a menu are endorsed by a share of ballots larger than $s$. We prove that all forms of majoritarianism are equivalent to a well-known behavioral property, namely Chernoff axiom. Then we focus on two paradigms of majoritarianism, whereby either a simple majority of ballots justifies a quasi-choice, or the endorsement by a single ballot suffices - a liberal justification. These benchmark explanations typically require a different minimum number of ballots. We determine the asymptotic minimum size of a liberal justification.

    Predicting the near-future delay with accuracy for trains is momentous for railway operations and passengers' traveling experience. This work aims to design prediction models for train delays based on Netherlands Railway data. We first develop a chi-square test to show that the delay evolution over stations follows a first-order Markov chain. We then propose a delay prediction model based on non-homogeneous Markov chains. To deal with the sparsity of the transition matrices of the Markov chains, we propose a novel matrix recovery approach that relies on Gaussian kernel density estimation. Our numerical tests show that this recovery approach outperforms other heuristic approaches in prediction accuracy. The Markov chain model we propose also shows to be better than other widely-used time series models with respect to both interpretability and prediction accuracy. Moreover, our proposed model does not require a complicated training process, which is capable of handling large-scale forecasting problems. 36 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

    A novel simulation framework has been developed in this study for the direct numerical simulation of the aerodynamic breakup of a vaporizing drop. The interfacial multiphase flow with phase change is resolved using a consistent geometric volume-of-fluid method. The bulk fluids are viscous and incompressible with surface tension at the interface. The newly-developed numerical methods have been implemented in the Basilisk solver, in which the adaptive octree/quadtree mesh is used for spatial discretization, allowing flexibility in dynamically refining the mesh in a user-defined region. The simulation framework is extensively validated by a series of benchmark cases, including the 1D Stefan and sucking problems, the growth of a 3D spherical bubble in a superheated liquid, and a 2D film boiling problem. The simulation results agree very well with the exact solution and previous numerical studies. 2D axisymmetric simulations were performed to resolve the vaporization of a moving drop with a low Weber number in a high-temperature free stream. The computed rate of volume loss agrees well with the empirical model of drop evaporation. Finally, the validated solver is used to simulate the aerodynamic breakup of an acetone drop at a high Weber number. A fully 3D simulation is performed and the morphological evolution of the drop is accurately resolved. The rate of vaporization is found to be significantly enhanced due to the drop deformation and breakup. The drop volume decreases nonlinearly in time and at a much higher rate than the empirical correlation for a spherical drop.

    The notion of word embedding plays a fundamental role in natural language processing (NLP). However, pre-training word embedding for very large-scale vocabulary is computationally challenging for most existing methods. In this work, we show that with merely a small fraction of contexts (Q-contexts)which are typical in the whole corpus (and their mutual information with words), one can construct high-quality word embedding with negligible errors. Mutual information between contexts and words can be encoded canonically as a sampling state, thus, Q-contexts can be fast constructed. Furthermore, we present an efficient and effective WEQ method, which is capable of extracting word embedding directly from these typical contexts. In practical scenarios, our algorithm runs 11$\sim$13 times faster than well-established methods. By comparing with well-known methods such as matrix factorization, word2vec, GloVeand fasttext, we demonstrate that our method achieves comparable performance on a variety of downstream NLP tasks, and in the meanwhile maintains run-time and resource advantages over all these baselines.     The foundation models based on pre-training technology have significantly advanced artificial intelligence from theoretical to practical applications. These models have facilitated the feasibility of computer-aided diagnosis for widespread use. Medical contrastive vision-language pre-training, which does not require human annotations, is an effective approach for guiding representation learning using description information in diagnostic reports. However, the effectiveness of pre-training is limited by the large-scale semantic overlap and shifting problems in medical field. To address these issues, we propose the Knowledge-Boosting Contrastive Vision-Language Pre-training framework (KoBo), which integrates clinical knowledge into the learning of vision-language semantic consistency. The framework uses an unbiased, open-set sample-wise knowledge representation to measure negative sample noise and supplement the correspondence between vision-language mutual information and clinical knowledge. Extensive experiments validate the effect of our framework on eight tasks including classification, segmentation, retrieval, and semantic relatedness, achieving comparable or better performance with the zero-shot or few-shot settings.     Word vector representations enable machines to encode human language for spoken language understanding and processing. Confusion2vec, motivated from human speech production and perception, is a word vector representation which encodes ambiguities present in human spoken language in addition to semantics and syntactic information. Confusion2vec provides a robust spoken language representation by considering inherent human language ambiguities. In this paper, we propose a novel word vector space estimation by unsupervised learning on lattices output by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system. We encode each word in Confusion2vec vector space by its constituent subword character n-grams. We show that the subword encoding helps better represent the acoustic perceptual ambiguities in human spoken language via information modeled on lattice-structured ASR output. The usefulness of the proposed Confusion2vec representation is evaluated using analogy and word similarity tasks designed for assessing semantic, syntactic and acoustic word relations. We also show the benefits of subword modeling for acoustic ambiguity representation on the task of spoken language intent detection. The results significantly outperform existing word vector representations when evaluated on erroneous ASR outputs, providing improvements up-to 13.12% relative to previous state-of-the-art in intent detection on ATIS benchmark dataset. We demonstrate that Confusion2vec subword modeling eliminates the need for retraining/adapting the natural language understanding models on ASR transcripts.

    Pattern formation, arising from systems of autonomous reaction-diffusion equations, on networks has become a common topic of study in the scientific literature. In this work we focus primarily on directed networks. Although some work prior has been done to understand how patterns arise on directed networks, these works have restricted their attentions to networks for whom the Laplacian matrix (corresponding to the network) is diagonalizable. Here, we address the question "how does one detect pattern formation if the Laplacian matrix is not diagonalizable?" To this end, we find it is useful to also address the related problem of pattern formation arising from systems of reaction-diffusion equations with non-local (global) reaction kinetics. These results are then generalized to include non-autonomous systems as well as temporal networks, i.e., networks whose topology is allowed to change in time.

    To enable the accelerated discovery of materials with desirable properties, it is critical to develop accurate and efficient search algorithms. Quantum annealers and similar quantum-inspired optimizers have the potential to provide accelerated computation for certain combinatorial optimization challenges. However, they have not been exploited for materials discovery due to absence of compatible optimization mapping methods. Here we show that by combining cluster expansion with a quantum-inspired superposition technique, we can lever quantum annealers in chemical space exploration for the first time. This approach enables us to accelerate the search of materials with desirable properties order 10-50 times faster than genetic algorithms and bayesian optimizations, with a significant improvement in ground state prediction accuracy. Levering this, we search chemical space for discovery of acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and find a promising previously unexplored chemical family of Ru-Cr-Mn-Sb-O$_2$. The best catalyst in this chemical family show a mass activity 8 times higher than state-of-art RuO$_2$ and maintain performance for 180 hours while operating at 10mA/cm$^2$ in acidic 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte.

    What happens when a warp bubble has mass? This seemingly innocent question forces one to carefully formalize exactly what one means by a warp bubble, exactly what one means by having the warp bubble "move" with respect to the fixed stars, and forces one to more carefully examine the notion of mass in warp-drive spacetimes. This is the goal of the present article. In this process, we will see that often-made throw-away comments regarding "payloads" are even simpler than commonly assumed, while there are two further, distinct yet subtle ways in which a mass can appear in connection with a warp drive space-time: One, that the warp bubble (not its payload) has the mass; two, that the mass is a background feature in front of which the warp drive moves. For simplicity, we consider generic Nat\'ario warp drives with zero-vorticity flow field. The resulting spacetimes are sufficiently simple to allow an exact and fully explicit computation of all of the stress-energy components, and verify that (as expected) the null energy condition (NEC) is violated. Likewise the weak, strong, and dominant energy conditions (WEC, SEC, DEC) are violated. Indeed, this confirms the community's folk wisdom, and recent (fully general, but implicit) results of the present authors which closed previous gaps in the argument. However, folk wisdom should be carefully and critically examined before being believed, and the present examples for general results will greatly aid physical intuition.     We describe a model that explains possibly indecisive choice behavior, that is, quasi-choices (choice correspondences that may be empty on some menus). The justification is here provided by a proportion of ballots, which are quasi-choices rationalizable by an arbitrary binary relation. We call a quasi-choice $s$-majoritarian if all options selected from a menu are endorsed by a share of ballots larger than $s$. We prove that all forms of majoritarianism are equivalent to a well-known behavioral property, namely Chernoff axiom. Then we focus on two paradigms of majoritarianism, whereby either a simple majority of ballots justifies a quasi-choice, or the endorsement by a single ballot suffices - a liberal justification. These benchmark explanations typically require a different minimum number of ballots. We determine the asymptotic minimum size of a liberal justification.

    Predicting the near-future delay with accuracy for trains is momentous for railway operations and passengers' traveling experience. This work aims to design prediction models for train delays based on Netherlands Railway data. We first develop a chi-square test to show that the delay evolution over stations follows a first-order Markov chain. We then propose a delay prediction model based on non-homogeneous Markov chains. To deal with the sparsity of the transition matrices of the Markov chains, we propose a novel matrix recovery approach that relies on Gaussian kernel density estimation. Our numerical tests show that this recovery approach outperforms other heuristic approaches in prediction accuracy. The Markov chain model we propose also shows to be better than other widely-used time series models with respect to both interpretability and prediction accuracy. Moreover, our proposed model does not require a complicated training process, which is capable of handling large-scale forecasting problems. 36 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

    A novel simulation framework has been developed in this study for the direct numerical simulation of the aerodynamic breakup of a vaporizing drop. The interfacial multiphase flow with phase change is resolved using a consistent geometric volume-of-fluid method. The bulk fluids are viscous and incompressible with surface tension at the interface. The newly-developed numerical methods have been implemented in the Basilisk solver, in which the adaptive octree/quadtree mesh is used for spatial discretization, allowing flexibility in dynamically refining the mesh in a user-defined region. The simulation framework is extensively validated by a series of benchmark cases, including the 1D Stefan and sucking problems, the growth of a 3D spherical bubble in a superheated liquid, and a 2D film boiling problem. The simulation results agree very well with the exact solution and previous numerical studies. 2D axisymmetric simulations were performed to resolve the vaporization of a moving drop with a low Weber number in a high-temperature free stream. The computed rate of volume loss agrees well with the empirical model of drop evaporation. Finally, the validated solver is used to simulate the aerodynamic breakup of an acetone drop at a high Weber number. A fully 3D simulation is performed and the morphological evolution of the drop is accurately resolved. The rate of vaporization is found to be significantly enhanced due to the drop deformation and breakup. The drop volume decreases nonlinearly in time and at a much higher rate than the empirical correlation for a spherical drop.

    The notion of word embedding plays a fundamental role in natural language processing (NLP). However, pre-training word embedding for very large-scale vocabulary is computationally challenging for most existing methods. In this work, we show that with merely a small fraction of contexts (Q-contexts)which are typical in the whole corpus (and their mutual information with words), one can construct high-quality word embedding with negligible errors. Mutual information between contexts and words can be encoded canonically as a sampling state, thus, Q-contexts can be fast constructed. Furthermore, we present an efficient and effective WEQ method, which is capable of extracting word embedding directly from these typical contexts. In practical scenarios, our algorithm runs 11$\sim$13 times faster than well-established methods. By comparing with well-known methods such as matrix factorization, word2vec, GloVeand fasttext, we demonstrate that our method achieves comparable performance on a variety of downstream NLP tasks, and in the meanwhile maintains run-time and resource advantages over all these baselines.
