description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Other literature type , Article 2024Publisher:Brill Authors: Sachs-Shmueli, Leore;Sachs-Shmueli, Leore;Abstract This article aims to decipher distinctive conceptual characteristics attributed to the legendary founder of Ḥasidism, Israel Baʿal Shem Ṭov, as documented by his faithful disciple, Jacob Joseph of Polonnoye (1710–1784). I endeavor to demonstrate how a quantitative analysis of the earliest testimonies of Beshtian teachings can improve our understanding of the interplay between major concepts within these teachings. To achieve this objective, I apply a combination of statistical tools of distant reading with textual analysis of close reading. It will reveal singular characteristics of the reported teachings of the Beshṭ, while distinguishing them from the textual corpus into which they were integrated, Jacob Joseph’s writings: Sefer Toldot Yaʿaqov Yosef (1780), Ben Porat Yosef (1781), and Ṣafnat Paʿneaḥ (1782). The results indicate a significant focus on negativity—moral, emotional, and conditional—as well as verbs that offer followers guidance regarding how to overcome these negative aspects of the human experience.

While Islamophobia and Orientalism are commonly discussed in relation to Muslims and Arabs, the somewhat archaic term Mahometanism shares semantic similarities but is less familiar in contemporary literature. This study adopts a methodology rooted in literary theory to examine the trajectory of the term Mahometanism in Orientalized discourse from the 11th to the 18th centuries. Comparing European Mahometanism with its American counterpart, this study claims that the former primarily symbolizes the perpetual religious conflict between Christianity and Islam, whereas the latter represents the clash of civilizations, transitioning from religious perspectives to secular attitudes during America’s separation from Britain. Given the scant body of relevant literature, the current study makes a unique contribution by offering a deeper understanding of the evolvement of Mahometanism over time and its enduring significance in the literary canon alongside its profound implications on past and modern-day anchors between the East and the West.

Mongolia was a mysterious country like an enigma to foreigners. To open it, foreigners wrote with various ideas. Did their stereotypes succeed? Based on such questionable assumptions, the circle analysis is presented. Stereotypes regarding Mongolia were examined in pieces published in the American Press between 1868 and 1968. To begin, stereotypes were extracted from the texts using content analysis. Second, on the topics of stereotypes, the study has discovered five frames of stereotypes. In the end the study examined the many meanings of stereotypes in frames. Some of these meanings could be the ‘fog’ that is distorting Mongolian understanding. However, other definitions may be more extensive, leading to a better comprehension of Mongolia. To recap all of these misconceptions, publications in the American press revealed admissible information about Mongolia at that time. This validates the five-frame analysis proposed in this study of Mongolian stereotypes in the American press.

We therefore seek to answer two key questions in this article: What are the impediments encountered in liberating the broadcasting industry in Zimbabwe since independence? To what extent is Zimbabwe’s broadcasting frequency spectrum licensing regime transparent, open and participatory? The article analyses if the licensing regimen meets International Telecommunications Union (ITU), continental and regional benchmarks of transparency, openness, fairness and inclusivity in allocation and assignment of frequencies. It investigates and unpacks policies and principles concerning frequency spectrum allocation for broadcasting in Zimbabwe. Documentary analysis is employed in examining policy documents which outline terms of reference and requirements for frequency spectrum allocation. We also conducted in-depth interviews with broadcasting policy makers and industrial voices such as applicants who were denied licenses. Four stations (two awarded and two denied) licenses and were purposively sampled for in-depth interviews. Findings in this study reveal that the adjudication and scoring of the licensees is not transparent, neither is it open and bidders do not have a say in the licensing process. Whilst the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe and the Postal Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe admit that final adjudication is done by the authorities, they still claim that the Zimbabwean licensing model is open, transparent and participatory.

The new theoretical framework predicts the proportion of dark matter in the Milky Way, and no contradiction is found in comparison with astronomical observational data. In the simplified spiral galaxy model, combined with the analysis of fluid mechanics, the theoretically predicted rotation curve of the galaxy is close to the real spiral galaxy rotation curve. Use logical reasoning to conclude that the source of the cosmic microwave background is the ether, which represents absolute space. An ideal model of cosmic expansion is constructed, the basic mathematical features of which are consistent with the observations of the Supernova Cosmological Survey team. The velocity gradient obtained in the ideal model of cosmic expansion corresponds to the Hubble constant, and it is pointed out that this velocity gradient is an ellipsoid. Using the ideal cosmic expansion model combined with the cosmic unit model, it is concluded that the Hubble constant consists of two parts, namely the doppler redshift part and the gravitational redshift part. By changing the source of the redshift value, the dark energy tends to infinity contradiction in the original dark energy hypothesis is solved. The analysis shows that there is a constant dominant inertial frame in the special theory of relativity, which proves the existence of the ether, and points out that the strong equivalence principle of the general theory of relativity is not valid, so that the twin paradox is completely resolved. By introducing imaginary dimensions to time and space, and under some assumptions, it is concluded that there is a time reversal in the imaginary dimension of time. In the case of time reversal, there is no contradiction between the new Bell inequality and quantum mechanics.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Preprint , Article 2024Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Rubin, Mark;Rubin, Mark;During multiple testing, researchers often adjust their alpha level to control the familywise error rate for a statistical inference about a joint union alternative hypothesis (e.g., “H1 or H2”). However, in some cases, they do not make this inference. Instead, they make separate inferences about each of the individual hypotheses that comprise the joint hypothesis (e.g., H1 and H2). For example, a researcher might use a Bonferroni correction to adjust their alpha level from the conventional level of 0.050 to 0.025 when testing H1 and H2, find a significant result for H1 (p < 0.025) and not for H2 (p > .0.025), and so claim support for H1 and not for H2. However, these separate individual inferences do not require an alpha adjustment. Only a statistical inference about the union alternative hypothesis “H1 or H2” requires an alpha adjustment because it is based on “at least one” significant result among the two tests, and so it depends on the familywise error rate. When a researcher corrects their alpha level during multiple testing but does not make an inference about the union alternative hypothesis, their correction is redundant. In the present article, I discuss this redundant correction problem, including its reduction in statistical power for tests of individual hypotheses and its potential causes vis-à-vis error rate confusions and the alpha adjustment ritual. I also provide three illustrations of redundant corrections from recent psychology studies. I conclude that redundant corrections represent a symptom of statisticism, and I call for a more nuanced inference-based approach to multiple testing corrections.

In U.S. planning schools, although campus diversity has internationalized, it remains hotly debated how to teach global dimensions of planning. We tackled this understudied subject from the perspective of mainland Chinese practitioners who studied planning in the United States and then returned home to work. We examined how cross-border journeys shaped their career choices and their attitudes toward different planning cultures. Through in-depth interviews, we found that although intercultural struggles triggered nationalist-leaning defensiveness in some returnees, most developed bicultural appreciation, embraced plural worldviews, and pursued transformative agency locally and cross-culturally. Returnees’ intercultural competencies and expanded consciousness reflect the value of cosmopolitanism for navigating differences. Amid cultural wars and geopolitical shifts, we call for a cosmopolitan ethos in planning education and practice and invite continual dialogues about future priorities for global planning debates. When working across borders, urban professionals inevitably confront cultural differences, institutional constraints, and value conflicts. U.S.-taught Chinese practitioners helped ideas, practices, and ethics travel and take root across borders through entrepreneurial, internationalist, interventionist, and reformist approaches. This suggests that international, multicultural training can equip practitioners with cosmopolitan competencies and pluralist worldviews, which can enable them to navigate cultural–political differences, identify ethical common grounds across borders, and nudge meaningful shifts through incremental, value-aligned action.

The paper proposes that the interference pattern in the double-slit experiment is because of the superposition of two waves with the same frequency and amplitude, which move in the opposite direction and form a standing wave. The paper claims that when we send particles one by one, there is no interference between a particle with other particles or with itself. Recently we used the quantum structure of electromagnetic waves (QSEW) to describe patterns of the single slit experiment and its diffraction. In the QSEW, we have claimed that a photon is not the quantum of electromagnetic waves and has a three-dimensional structure made of one-dimensional energies. The photon can gain or lose one-dimensional quanta energies (diffraction patterns) and even share them (Redshift). At the time of losing or gaining one dimensional quanta energies of each photon the direction of the axis of oscillation of the photon can change. the QSEW explains the effect of the observer and predict displacement of the pattern of the double slit experiment after changing distance of the detector. The paper proposes using the trajectory tree pattern of the QSEW to describe interference patterns of particles in the double-slit experiment. It seems we are at the beginning of a new phase of physics that could change our knowledge about the universe.
