En este trabajo se analizan los expedientes de caso de Pedro de Navascués y José Agustín Argüelles, el primero expulsado de Cuba en 1863 y el segundo condenado a presidio en La Habana en 1864. Ambas causas sucedieron durante el mandato como capitán general de Cuba de Domingo Dulce y Garay (1862-1866) y se basaron en disputas y acusaciones relacionadas con el tráfico ilegal de esclavos. Los dos personajes ostentaban cargos públicos de autoridad, lo que elevó la magnitud del conflicto hasta la esfera internacional, siendo especialmente importante el papel de Estados Unidos en la deportación de Argüelles frente al derecho de asilo. This paper analyzes the case files of Pedro de Navascués and José Agustín Argüelles, the former expelled from Cuba in 1863 and the latter sentenced to prison in Havana in 1864. Both cases occurred during Domingo Dulce y Garays mandate as captain general of Cuba (1862-1866) and were based on disputes and accusations related to the illegal slave trade. Both characters held public positions of authority, which raised the magnitude of the conflict to the international sphere, being especially important the role of the United States in the deportation of Argüelles as opposed to the right of asylum.

Terracing is found widely in the Mediterranean and in other hilly and mountainous regions of the world. Yet while archaeological attention to these ‘mundane’ landscape features has grown, they remain understudied, particularly in Northern Europe. Here, the authors present a multidisciplinary study of terraces in the Breamish Valley, Northumberland. The results date their construction to the Early to Middle Bronze Age, when they were built by cutting back the hillside, stone clearance and wall construction. Environmental evidence points to their use for cereal cultivation. The authors suggest that the construction and use of these terraces formed part of an Early to Middle Bronze Age agricultural intensification, which may have been both demographically and culturally driven.

La noche del 12 de marzo de 1670, un grupo de marineros que se dirigían al galeón de Manila San Diego asaltaron el barangay o poblado filipino de Santa Ana en busca de comida. Este hecho, aunque aislado y a simple vista sin gran transcendencia, nos permite vislumbrar ciertos aspectos de la vida del medio agrícola filipino. A partir de este caso, se aprecia cómo este pequeño poblado no era una pieza aislada del resto de globo, sino que se encontraba interconectado con diversas redes comerciales y culturales, siendo participe de la conocida como «primera globalización». On the night of March 12, 1670, a group of sailors on their way to the Manila’s Galleon San Diego raided the Filipino barangay or village of Santa Ana in search of food. This fact, although isolated, allows us to view certain aspects of the life of the Philippine agricultural environment. From this case, we can appreciate how this nucleus was not an isolated piece from the rest of the globe, but was interconnected with various commercial and cultural networks, thus taking part in the so-called «first globalization».

The burials at the Neolithic cemetery Kadruka 23 in Sudan have yielded adornments and bone and lithic artefacts that occur as distinct stages of the chaîne opératoire. This article reports on a hitherto unrecognised funerary practice that highlights the importance of craftsmanship for Neolithic communities in life and beyond. Peer reviewed

The subsistence practices of Holocene communities living in the Nile Valley of Central Sudan are comparatively little known. Recent excavations at Khor Shambat, Sudan, have yielded well-defined Mesolithic and Neolithic stratigraphy. Here, for the first time, archaeozoological, palaeobotanical, phytolith and dental calculus studies are combined with lipid residue analysis of around 100 pottery fragments and comparative analysis of faunal remains and organic residues. This holistic approach provides valuable information on changes in adaptation strategies, from Mesolithic hunter-gatherers to Neolithic herders exploiting domesticates. A unique picture is revealed of the natural environment and human subsistence, demonstrating the potential wider value of combining multiple methods. New radiocarbon dates reveal the foundation, use and abandonment of the Covão do Urso and Mina da Presa mining sites.
