    ABSTRACT The Idylls of Theocritus stand between imitation and imagination, between the real world and story. Theocritus’s presentation of both urban and rural environments trains our readings on people, landscape, and materiality—and the porosity between them. This article offers a reading of Theocritus’s Idyll 21 and the strong connection it presents between fishermen and their environs, through the lens of material ecocriticism. It shows that the world of the Theocritean corpus is complicated and enriched by material agency and the agentic landscape. This article engages with approaches to imagination, especially new-materialist entangled perspectives that resonate with Theocritus’s cast of characters, which include nature and the nonhuman.

    This paper explores the placement and function of the discipline of geography in the expansion of the Japanese empire, doing so through the prism of the work and field research of Tada Fumio, a leading geographer in Japan both before and after 1945. This examination of this aspect of Tada Fumio's career and its interweaving with the construction and consolidation of Japan's empire will broaden recent studies of imperial Japan's simultaneous encounter with geopolitics and fascism while engaging with Japan's developing ideas about geography as a political and cultural discipline. This paper demonstrates the importance of the entwined histories of Japanese and German geographers in the Japanese empire, as well as documenting Tada Fumio's activities in Manchuria (northeast China) and on the Korean peninsula. Finally, the paper reveals fissures in the historical record of Japanese geographers in continentalAsia and, until such time as more subaltern voices can be found, seeks to lay down the foundation for further research on the study of geography in the Japanese empire.

    Hazel (Corylus avellana) has been abundant in the vegetation of northern and central Europe since the early Holocene and has provided food and materials for humans ever since. Here we use stable carbon isotope (δ13C) values of hazelnut shells to infer woodland openness based on the premise of the “canopy effect”. It is well established that plants growing in dense, shaded forests have lower carbon isotope (δ13C) values than plants growing in open areas. By measuring δ13C values in hazelnuts collected from trees growing in different levels of light intensity, we show that the canopy effect is preserved in hazelnuts and that their δ13C values can be used to infer woodland openness in the past. We apply the method to hazelnuts recovered from sites dated to between the Mesolithic and Iron Age (c. 7000 BCE−1000 CE) in southern Sweden. Our results show that the nuts dated to the Mesolithic were harvested from hazels growing in a range of closed to open settings while nuts from subsequent periods were harvested from progressively more open environments. Given the abundance of hazelnuts recovered from many archaeological contexts, this method has the potential to reconstruct the microhabitats exploited by humans in the past and explore the impact of humans on their environment.

    This paper provides an introduction and progress report on the first season of fieldwork carried out by the Falklands War Mapping Project. In March and April 2022, a team including two Scots Guards veterans travelled to the Falkland Islands and surveyed field fortifications and artefacts related to the Battle of Tumbledown (13–14 June 1982). The focus was on the western and southern flanks of the feature, with a notable series of Argentine dugouts recorded on the low ground at the southern base of the mountain. The first five days were spent in COVID-19 quarantine in Stanley, followed by eight days dedicated to the Tumbledown survey and site visits – a further three days were spent on Pebble Island by two of the project team. This project marks the first occasion on which the veterans of a battle have been engaged in the archaeological survey of their own battlefield.

    This article analyses the development of the notion of ‘commonwealth’ within the Round Table group in relation to two books: Alfred Zimmern’s The Greek Commonwealth (1911) and Lionel Curtis’ The Commonwealth of Nations (1916). Modern historians of International Relations have argued that the title of Zimmern’s book alluded to conceptions of the British empire as a ‘commonwealth’. Drawing on previously unused archival sources and on detailed study of the different editions of The Greek Commonwealth, this article shows that Zimmern’s title did not refer to any form of political organization larger than the city-state and that IR historians have wrongly read into Zimmern’s book both the idea of commonwealth and the reading of the Athenian empire developed by Lionel Curtis. The article explores Curtis’ development of the concept of commonwealth and its reception by Zimmern and other members of the Round Table, and sets the historical narrative Curtis offers in The Commonwealth of Nations against The Greek Commonwealth. It shows that, even though Curtis used Zimmern’s work as a source, he took issue with its presentation of Athens precisely in relation to the questions of imperial organization that were the Round Table’s central concern.

    AbstractIn this article, I will argue that various scholars of kalām unanimously agree that sense-perception is something beyond the physical processes in the sense organs. There may be something happening in our eyes when we see a red apple, but seeing a red apple is not tantamount to it. We will see that some scholars of kalām argue that sense-perception is akin to being aware or conscious of the object of perception, and, hence, distinct from the physical process in the sense organs. One group will go so far as to accept that sense-perception is not even dependent on any physical processes in the body. Another group will accept that sense-perception presupposes that various physical conditions obtain, yet still regard sense-perception as something distinct from the occurrence of those conditions. I am suggesting that these nonreductive theories of sense-perception are the reason why Arabic-Islamic philosophers, starting from the eleventh century CE, consistently reject the Aristotelian-Avicennian theory of sense-perception.

    ABSTRACT Exogamous marriage alliances involving royal women played a prominent role in the conversion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms to Christianity in the seventh century AD. Yet the large number of well-furnished female burials from this period suggests a broader change in the role of women. The authors present the results of isotopic analysis of seventh-century burials, comparing male and female mobility and the mobility of females from well-furnished versus poorly/unfurnished burials. Results suggest increased mobility during the Conversion Period that is, paradoxically, most noticeable among women buried in poorly furnished graves; their well-furnished contemporaries were more likely to have grown up near to their place of burial.

    Authors: Simon Brown; Jon C. Henderson;

    This paper describes the workflow followed to survey and monitor the interior and exterior of a large and complex metal wreck, the SS Thistlegorm in the Red Sea, using digital photogrammetry. Utilizing a simple single-camera rig and off-the-shelf software, this study presents a cost-effective and easily replicable method for monitoring change in metal wrecks that meets professional standards and can involve non-specialists in data collection. This paper details the background of the SS Thistlegorm, the equipment used, and the photogrammetric surveys conducted in 2017 and 2022. It outlines the importance of having a clearly thought-out data-management system when working on a large target recorded over a limited series of dives. In particular, this paper considers testing the accuracy of the data obtained and describes the post-processing workflow in detail. The conclusion underscores the feasibility of achieving an accurate geo-referenced baseline 3D survey with readily available equipment and how these data can contribute to historical research and ongoing monitoring efforts.

    Abstract Three new monographs have appeared in 2023 that explore the Bible and nonhuman animals: Peter Joshua Atkins, The Animalising Affliction of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4: Reading Across the Human-Animal Boundary (London: T&T Clark, 2023; pp. xiv + 260); Dong Hyeon Jeong, Embracing the Nonhuman in the Gospel of Mark (Atlanta: SBL Press, 2023; pp. xii+177); Saul M. Olyan, Animal Rights and the Hebrew Bible (New York: OUP, 2023; pp. xii+144). This review brings these books into conversation, suggesting six questions that they grapple with and which might stimulate further research.

    Authors: Steeds, Lucy;

    Emerging from fifteen years working with colleagues around the world on exhibition histories for contemporary art, this essay uses “ecological exposability” as a means of appraising art here and today. In other words, it simply asks: how may public engagement with art situate us in more lively ways, implicating us in the ecosystems wherever we find ourselves, while simultaneously encouraging us to embed within the environment – aesthetically, critically and carefully – on a worldwide horizon? In particular, the exhibition possibilities for a work of art anchored in the West Coast of Scotland is explored, for its translocal and transcontinental resonances.

    Authors: Robert Winstanley-Chesters; Adam Cathcart;

    Authors: Rood, T;

    Authors: Hamerow, HF; Leggett, S; Tinguely, C; Le Roux, P;

    Authors: Simon Brown; Jon C. Henderson;

    Authors: Steeds, Lucy;
