The excitements and tragedies of the events that emerged during the breakup of Yugoslavia have made me, as a historian of America, think about them from the perspective of American history. Slovene historians are mindful of the contributions that Slovenes have made to the world treasury of political thought.' One of these contributions influenced ThomasJefferson and thus the beginning of the democratic experiment that became the United States. For Slovenian schoolchildren the story of American democracy begins in Carinthia in the seventh century. In the fifth grade they learn about the ancient Slovenian state of Carinthia and about the old ritual of installation in which the duke of Carinthia received his power from the peasants. Carinthia (Karantania), which was established in the seventh century, was the first Slovene state, and the ritual installation of the duke of Carinthia that
