    Authors: ANDY BRUNO;

    In the mid‐1940s an idea arose that a crash of an atomically‐powered alien spaceship had caused the mysterious Tunguska explosion of 1908 in Siberia. Initially expressed as fiction, this speculation evolved into an active hypothesis that inspired decades’ worth of amateur investigations. This article examines the history of the Tunguska nuclear hypothesis and what it reveals about nuclear and technological culture in the USSR. It argues that Soviet technological imagination had a tendency to place the country's developments into a cosmic perspective that drew parallels between contemporary circumstances on Earth and the possible existence of technologies among civilizations elsewhere in the universe. Seeing the country's communist project as part of a cosmic drama involved a form of universalism that aligned with Marxist ideology, but also possessed distinctive influences and afterlives. By concentrating on cosmic analogies at play in Soviet technological imagination about Tunguska, this article also underscores how the suspected link between otherworldly civilizations and earthly actions informed ways of conceptualizing race and ethnicity, the boundaries of scientific knowledge, and the natural environment.

    Authors: KIRILL CHUNIKHIN;

    Introducing previously neglected primary sources and suggesting an alternative approach to researching history of art during the Cold War, in this article, I rethink Soviet Thaw‐ and post‐Thaw fate of cubism. In doing so, I acknowledge the movement's major constituting role within Soviet art discourse. In a first step, I analyze an unknown strategy of apology of cubism designed by seminal Kulturträgers Igor Golomstock and Andrei Sinyavsky. This is to challenge dominant scholarly accounts paying overly attention to Soviet negative criticism of cubism while ignoring the actual complexity of debates within the allegedly monolithic totalitarian discourse. Analyzing results of the apology, I argue that the attempt to rehabilitate cubism caused an intensification of negative criticism characteristic of novel anti‐modernist patterns such as by Mikhail Lifshitz, a prominent Soviet philosopher. This re‐actualization of debates on cubism had both domestic and transnational premises. Ultimately, situating Soviet discussions of cubism within relevant European debates on modernist art, I nuance interpretations of Soviet art discourse as that of an isolationist.

    Authors: OKSANA HUSIEVA;

    The current article contributes to the emerging literature on dokhodiagi–the Gulag's most vulnerable, famished, and exhausted prisoners, whose deaths were a common occurrence in the harsh conditions of the Soviet forced labor camps. I explore the literary representation of dokhodiagi in the two major works authored by Gulag survivors–Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago and Varlam Shalamov's Kolyma Stories. Both Solzhenitsyn and Shalamov dedicate their works to the memory of victims who perished in Stalinist camps, which suggests their intention to commemorate dokhodiagi. Yet, a close examination of Solzhenitsyn's and Shalamov's texts shows marked differences in how the two authors engage in the process of memorializing the Gulag's victims. By focusing on the selected passages from The Gulag Archipelago and Kolyma Stories, I juxtapose the narrative strategies that Solzhenitsyn and Shalamov use to describe dokhodiagi, as well as address the larger ethical issues that underlie the two authors' written testimonies of the Soviet forced labor camps.

    Authors: BRETT WINESTOCK;

    This article examines two novels from the last decade written by Russian‐Jewish writers, Liudmila Ulitskaia's Daniel Stein, Translator and Aleksandr Meilakhs' Red Zion. Both novels feature remarkably similar protagonists, unique for Russian literature: Polish‐born Jews who survive the Shoah and immigrate to Israel. They use these characters' lives and stories as means of exploring contemporary Russian‐Jewish identity. I read the two novels and their attitudes toward ethnic identity in the historical shadow of the Soviet Nationalities Policy, which promoted the seemingly contradictory values of universalism and ethnic nationalism at one in the same time and inspired diverse and complex reactions in verbal art. The contrast between Ulitskaia and Meilakhs is most apparent in their attitudes toward translation, an important question for the Soviet Nationalities Policy and one which still resonates in the twenty‐first century. While Ulitskaia's novel sees translation as creation and way for Russian‐Jewish identity to progress and live, Meilkahs' see translation only as loss. The two novels therefore offer two divergent paths in how to construct identity and verbal art.

    Authors: VLADIMIR IVANTSOV;

    Fyodor Dostoevsky's notion of podpol'ie (underground) occupied the minds of Russian writers, philosophers, and literary critics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth‐centuries. In Soviet times, however, the philosophical, psychological, and moral meanings that linked podpol'ie to Dostoevsky were almost forgotten; instead, podpol'ie acquired distinct political overtones that implied resistance to the ruling regime. Seeking to avoid associations with the political underground, late Soviet unofficial culture (kul'turnoe podpol'e), traced the origins of this concept back to Dostoevsky. The poet Viktor Krivulin, a major representative of the Leningrad underground, played a significant role in this process. This article studies Krivulin's poems and essays in which he described the similarities that connect Dostoevsky's podpol'ie to the underground of Soviet unofficial culture. Through close readings of two of Krivulin's 1972 poems, “The Rat” and “To the Underground Man,” I argue that Krivulin used the Dostoevskian intertext to revise the notion of the “literary underground (literaturnoe podpol'ie), shifting the focus from external forces of politics and society that traditionally defined the underground as counter‐culture, to internal forces of individual psychology, morality, and metaphysics.

    Authors: ANDY BRUNO;

    Authors: KIRILL CHUNIKHIN;

    Authors: OKSANA HUSIEVA;

    Authors: BRETT WINESTOCK;

    Authors: VLADIMIR IVANTSOV;
