Documentation of heritage objects has advanced significantly with the invention and development of many 3D sensors and processing algorithms. These technical advancements are of the utmost interest for cultural heritage stakeholders; knowledge transfer between key players is therefore essential and is indeed the main philosophy behind the CIPA Heritage Documentation as an organisation. In this paper we present a report on the CIPA Tropical School in the Candi Sewu temple complex in Indonesia. Organisational aspects will be described, as well as some technical results of the workshop. As public interest in the tropical school was quite high, we argue that this type of limited participant training event involving international partners and cross-disciplinary experts is a very powerful tool in knowledge dissemination. Furthermore, we encourage the organisation of such events in other places around the world.

I.; Riyanto, S.; Brahmantara; Tanaka, S.;Abstract. Three-dimensional point clouds are becoming popular representations for digital archives of cultural heritage sites. The Borobudur Temple, located in Central Java, Indonesia, was built in the 8th century. Borobudur is considered one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We are developing a virtual reality system as a digital archive of the Borobudur Temple. This research is a collaboration between Ritsumeikan University, Japan, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), and the Borobudur Conservation Office, Indonesia. In our VR system, the following three data sources are integrated to form a 3D point cloud: (1) a 3D point cloud of the overall shape of the temple acquired by photogrammetry using a camera carried by a UAV, (2) a 3D point cloud obtained from precise photogrammetric measurements of selected parts of the temple building, and (3) 3D data of the hidden relief panels recovered from the archived 2D monocular photos using deep learning. Our VR system supports both the first-person view and the bird’s eye view. The first-person view allows immersive observation and appreciation of the cultural heritage. The bird’s eye view is useful for understanding the whole picture. A user can easily switch between the two views by using a user-friendly VR user interface constructed by a 3D game engine.

Although Islam is the main religion, the most famous sites in Indonesia are the ancient temples (Candis) on Java and Bali. The Candis in Java represent a challenging ancient architectural heritage and are important features for the Javanese population to identify with their own culture, even today as the Buddhist and Hindu religions have almost disappeared from everyday life. The temples of Borobudur and Prambanan are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and are among Indonesia's most popular tourist destinations. In addition, there are numerous smaller temples and temple complexes for whose preservation is challenged by recurring earthquakes. Continuous monitoring of the monuments, especially with regard to structural stability, is therefore essential. In cooperation of the TU Wien with the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta and local authorities, a possible workflow for a future surveying and continuous monitoring of the monuments was tested. With the help of 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry the most reliable and economical method for the continuous observation of the temples shall be developed taking into account the local conditions. In a cooperation of lecturers of the participating universities and students, as well as experts of the responsible temple authority ten temples were measured in order to test the envisaged workflows and their reliability This paper shows the approach and exemplary results.

Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality have successfully transitioned from the laboratory environment to becoming mainstream technologies available to almost everyone, mainly due to important advancements in terms of hardware. These technologies, along with recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence, have the potential to deliver compelling experiences. In the Cultural Heritage domain, they can be used to achieve natural interaction with virtual statues, making visitors feel as if physical statues “come to life” and can engage in dialogue with them. This paper presents the fundamental technological components towards this vision and how they can be orchestrated through the description of a conceptual architecture and a use case example. Open research issues are also discussed, providing a roadmap for future research in this area.
