    Puesto que las ciudades han de servir de hogar de residencia y de refugio debe atenderse (al fundarlas) a cuanta providencia conducente a la seguridad de la comunidad contra los ataques de los enemigos y facilitar el acceso de los objetos y comodidades de que el pueblo tiene menester. Para que una ciudad se halle al abrigo de sorpresas, debe haber un cerco de murallas que rodee el conjunto de las casas, y ocupar el emplazamiento un punto invulnerable de facil defensa". En estas palabras del gran historiador Ibn Jaldn, que aquí tomamos prestadas, se hace hincapié en los aspectos defensivos, que tanto han preocupado a las sociedades humanas desde sus inicios. Sin embargo, las murallas, torres, atalayas y estructuras defensivas no solo nacen para satisfacer necesidades bélicas sino también por cuestiones socioeconómicas e incluso simbólicas, pudiendo servir igualmente para acotar jurídica y fiscalmente determinados espacios o demarcar y controlar un territorio concreto. En este volumen se recogen trece contribuciones que versan precisamente sobre todos estos asuntos desde diferentes perspectivas y a través de diversas metodologías. Las cronologias aquí abordadas van de la Prehistoria hasta el periodo contemporaneo, con un especial protagonismo de la etapa medieval. Si bien, en casi todos los casos estudiados puede destacarse una marcada participacion de los Estados o de organizaciones protoestatales, no puede olvidarse la participación de las comunidades rurales y/o de la ciudadania. Están presentes temas vinculados a diferentes disciplinas Historia, Arqueologia, Historia del Arte, Arquitectura y Documentacion escrita, pero no cabe duda de que la Arqueologia ha sido la dinamo que ha generado el discurso más novedoso y que, por consiguiente, ha conducido a los resultados científicos originales que aquí se exponen.

    He aquí una publicación colectiva única que recoge 12 intervenciones divididas en tres bloques (Reflexiones generales y transversales, el Magreb y otros territorios y al-Andalus) cuyo denominador común son los asuntos de la ISLAMIZACIÓN, ARABIZACIÓN Y RESISTENCIAS EN AL-ANDALUS Y EL MAGREB. Un volumen que se propone aportar novedades, tanto por los enfoques desde los que se abordan estos procesos (arqueología, documentos escritos, numismática ) como por las zonas estudiadas (Galia, Hispania, Magreb) y que además cuenta con contribuciones de algunos de los máximos especialistas en la materia. Desde el momento en que las tropas arabo-beréberes cruzan el Estrecho de Gibraltar (711) existe la intención de arabizar e islamizar el nuevo territorio conquistado. Los precintos, monedas y primeros documentos epigráficos, por una parte, y las restricciones de libertades e impuestos especiales, por otra, son muestras evidentes de ello. Los resultados de ambos procesos dependen de los estratos, de las circunstancias de la conquista y del sustrato local. Los procesos asimilacionistas se manifiestan por dos vías: en los cambios lingüísticos (la arabización) y en los socio-económicos, culturales y religiosos (la islamización). Por lo tanto, esta nueva aportación pretende enriquecer un debate abierto sobre el que debe aún revisarse los modelos explicativos, y esto es lo que aquí precisamente se realiza a través de cotejo de las teorías globales con las experiencias locales. This is a unique collective publication that gathers 12 interventions divided into three blocks (general and transversal reflections, the Maghreb and other territories and al-Andalus) whose common denominator are the issues of ISLAMIZATION, ARABIZATION AND RESISTANCE IN AL-ANDALUS AND THE MAGHREB. A volume that intends to bring novelties, both for the approaches from which these processes are approached (archaeology, written documents, numismatics) and for the areas studied (Gaul, Hispania, Maghreb) and that also has contributions from some of the leading specialists in the field. From the moment the Arab-Berber troops crossed the Strait of Gibraltar (711) there was the intention to Arabize and Islamize the new conquered territory. The seals, coins and first epigraphic documents, on the one hand, and the restrictions of liberties and special taxes, on the other hand, are evident proof of this. The results of both processes depend on the strata, the circumstances of the conquest and the local substratum. Assimilationist processes manifest themselves in two ways: in linguistic changes (Arabization) and in socio-economic, cultural and religious changes (Islamization). Therefore, this new contribution aims to enrich an open debate on which the explanatory models must still be revised, and this is precisely what is done here by comparing global theories with local experiences.     This anthology explores the memory work performed by Baltic and Central and East European far-right actors in the online space. Situated at the crossroads between memory studies, far-right studies, and media studies, the volume’s seven chapters show how a wide range of far-right actors, from small movements to major parties, have exploited digital communication technologies in order to establish their plays with the past in the mainstream discourses of their respective national contexts. With a focus on the online memory work of the far right in Austria, Belarus, Czechia, Lithuania, Romania, Sweden, and Ukraine, the anthology dissects the nexus between politics, media, and memory to show how digital communication have empowered the memory work of marginal but dangerous societal actors. As the different contributions show, the online space has raised the visibility and success of organised intolerant groups and, consequently, it has magni ed the societal impact of their memory work. Thanks to digital media, the memory work of the far right can compete on an equal footing with state-endorsed memory politics. rough manipulation of the historical narrative and thereby the perception and understanding of the past in civil societies, on websites, blogs, and social media, the far right has succeeded in overcoming its marginality and in normalising its messages of intolerance on a continental scale.     The annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russia’s support for military insurgency in eastern Ukraine undermined two decades of cooperation between Russia and the EU leaving both sides in a situation of reciprocal economic sanctions and political alienation. What is left of previous positive experiences and mutually beneficial interactions between the two parties? And, what new communication practices and strategies might Russia and Europe use? Previously coherent and institutionalized spaces of communication and dialogue between Moscow and Brussels have fragmented into relations that, while certainly not cooperative, are also not necessarily adversarial. Exploring these spaces, contributors consider how this indeterminacy makes cooperation problematic, though not impossible, and examine the shrunken, yet still existent, expanse of interaction between Russia and the EU. Analysing to what extent Russian foreign policy philosophy is compatible with European ideas of democracy, and whether Russia might pragmatically profit from the liberal democratic order, the volume also focuses on the practical implementation of these discourses and conceptualizations as policy instruments. This book is an important resource for researchers in Russian and Soviet Politics, Eastern European Politics and the policy, politics and expansion of the European Union.

    This book focuses on three Italian cities in the early middle ages, Rome, Ravenna and Venice, and looks at them in a new light. The unifying element linking them was their common Byzantine past, since they remained in the sphere of imperial power after the creation of the Lombard kingdom in the late 6th century, up to 750. What happened to them when their links with the Byzantine Empire were almost entirely severed in the 8th century? Did they remain socially and culturally heirs of Byzantium in the 9th and 10th centuries in their political structures, social organisation, material culture, ideological frame of reference and representation of identity? Or did they become part of the next imperial powers of Italy, the Carolingian and the Ottonian empires? A workshop in Oxford in 2014 brought together an international group of specialists to discuss these questions in a comparative context; the excitement of their debates is captured in the discussion sections linking the papers in this volume. Early medieval Italy can be seen in a new way as a result.

    He aquí una publicación colectiva única que recoge 12 intervenciones divididas en tres bloques (Reflexiones generales y transversales, el Magreb y otros territorios y al-Andalus) cuyo denominador común son los asuntos de la ISLAMIZACIÓN, ARABIZACIÓN Y RESISTENCIAS EN AL-ANDALUS Y EL MAGREB. Un volumen que se propone aportar novedades, tanto por los enfoques desde los que se abordan estos procesos (arqueología, documentos escritos, numismática ) como por las zonas estudiadas (Galia, Hispania, Magreb) y que además cuenta con contribuciones de algunos de los máximos especialistas en la materia. Desde el momento en que las tropas arabo-beréberes cruzan el Estrecho de Gibraltar (711) existe la intención de arabizar e islamizar el nuevo territorio conquistado. Los precintos, monedas y primeros documentos epigráficos, por una parte, y las restricciones de libertades e impuestos especiales, por otra, son muestras evidentes de ello. Los resultados de ambos procesos dependen de los estratos, de las circunstancias de la conquista y del sustrato local. Los procesos asimilacionistas se manifiestan por dos vías: en los cambios lingüísticos (la arabización) y en los socio-económicos, culturales y religiosos (la islamización). Por lo tanto, esta nueva aportación pretende enriquecer un debate abierto sobre el que debe aún revisarse los modelos explicativos, y esto es lo que aquí precisamente se realiza a través de cotejo de las teorías globales con las experiencias locales. This is a unique collective publication that gathers 12 interventions divided into three blocks (general and transversal reflections, the Maghreb and other territories and al-Andalus) whose common denominator are the issues of ISLAMIZATION, ARABIZATION AND RESISTANCE IN AL-ANDALUS AND THE MAGHREB. A volume that intends to bring novelties, both for the approaches from which these processes are approached (archaeology, written documents, numismatics) and for the areas studied (Gaul, Hispania, Maghreb) and that also has contributions from some of the leading specialists in the field. From the moment the Arab-Berber troops crossed the Strait of Gibraltar (711) there was the intention to Arabize and Islamize the new conquered territory. The seals, coins and first epigraphic documents, on the one hand, and the restrictions of liberties and special taxes, on the other hand, are evident proof of this. The results of both processes depend on the strata, the circumstances of the conquest and the local substratum. Assimilationist processes manifest themselves in two ways: in linguistic changes (Arabization) and in socio-economic, cultural and religious changes (Islamization). Therefore, this new contribution aims to enrich an open debate on which the explanatory models must still be revised, and this is precisely what is done here by comparing global theories with local experiences.     This anthology explores the memory work performed by Baltic and Central and East European far-right actors in the online space. Situated at the crossroads between memory studies, far-right studies, and media studies, the volume’s seven chapters show how a wide range of far-right actors, from small movements to major parties, have exploited digital communication technologies in order to establish their plays with the past in the mainstream discourses of their respective national contexts. With a focus on the online memory work of the far right in Austria, Belarus, Czechia, Lithuania, Romania, Sweden, and Ukraine, the anthology dissects the nexus between politics, media, and memory to show how digital communication have empowered the memory work of marginal but dangerous societal actors. As the different contributions show, the online space has raised the visibility and success of organised intolerant groups and, consequently, it has magni ed the societal impact of their memory work.     The annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russia’s support for military insurgency in eastern Ukraine undermined two decades of cooperation between Russia and the EU leaving both sides in a situation of reciprocal economic sanctions and political alienation. What is left of previous positive experiences and mutually beneficial interactions between the two parties? And, what new communication practices and strategies might Russia and Europe use? Previously coherent and institutionalized spaces of communication and dialogue between Moscow and Brussels have fragmented into relations that, while certainly not cooperative, are also not necessarily adversarial. Exploring these spaces, contributors consider how this indeterminacy makes cooperation problematic, though not impossible, and examine the shrunken, yet still existent, expanse of interaction between Russia and the EU. Analysing to what extent Russian foreign policy philosophy is compatible with European ideas of democracy, and whether Russia might pragmatically profit from the liberal democratic order, the volume also focuses on the practical implementation of these discourses and conceptualizations as policy instruments. This book is an important resource for researchers in Russian and Soviet Politics, Eastern European Politics and the policy, politics and expansion of the European Union.

    This book focuses on three Italian cities in the early middle ages, Rome, Ravenna and Venice, and looks at them in a new light. The unifying element linking them was their common Byzantine past, since they remained in the sphere of imperial power after the creation of the Lombard kingdom in the late 6th century, up to 750. What happened to them when their links with the Byzantine Empire were almost entirely severed in the 8th century? Did they remain socially and culturally heirs of Byzantium in the 9th and 10th centuries in their political structures, social organisation, material culture, ideological frame of reference and representation of identity? Or did they become part of the next imperial powers of Italy, the Carolingian and the Ottonian empires? A workshop in Oxford in 2014 brought together an international group of specialists to discuss these questions in a comparative context; the excitement of their debates is captured in the discussion sections linking the papers in this volume. Early medieval Italy can be seen in a new way as a result.
