Vasios; Evmorfia Psara; Georgios Antasouras; Maria Gialeli; Eleni Pavlidou; Anna Tsantili-Kakoulidou; Andreas Y. Troumbis; Constantinos Giaginis; Background: Medicinal plants and herbs constitute rich sources of flavoring, and aromatic compounds, namely phytochemicals, which have many positive impacts on human health, such as antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective properties. Such bioactive compounds may be considered lead compounds that can be introduced in the drug design process to obtain novel drug candidates with better bioavailability and therapeutic efficiency. The Islands of the North Aegean have rich biodiversity and many medicinal plants and herbs with multiple health benefits. Objective: This study aims to summarize and scrutinize the antioxidant activity of medicinal plants and herbs of the North Aegean islands. Methods: A thorough search of the existing literature was performed in the most accurate scientific databases, using a set of effective and relative keywords and including only clinical human studies written in English. Results: Several clinical studies have highlighted the potential antioxidant activity of phytochemicals from plants such as St. John's wort, chamomile, rosemary, spearmint, mastiha, mountain tea, oregano, sage, and thyme, as measured in the blood and saliva of human individuals, after administration of extracts and solutions of these plants. Decreased levels of oxidized lipoproteins, increased activity of antioxidant enzymes, and an enhanced total antioxidant capacity were observed. Conclusions: Current clinical trials remain still limited, and an enhanced series is needed with a better methodology design, larger sample size, longer intervention periods, using controlled groups and randomization to unravel the antioxidant activity of these North Aegean endemic plants in human individuals.

This increased vulnerability places these sites at risk of deterioration or complete destruction. Risks such as land deformation, floods, acid rain, and erosion significantly threaten historic monuments, while water-related hazards, significantly influenced by both climate change and human activities, present a particularly grave risk to these invaluable sites. Considerable research efforts have focused on safeguarding CH sites. However, there remains a deficiency in systemic approaches towards identifying and mitigating risks for CH sites. The TRIQUETRA project proposes a technological toolbox and a methodological framework for tackling climate change risks and natural hazards threatening CH in the most efficient way possible. It aims at creating an evidence-based assessment platform allowing precise risk stratification as well as a database of available mitigation measures and strategies, acting as a Decision Support System (DSS) towards efficient risk mitigation and site remediation. TRIQUETRA is a European project that brings together a diverse group of researchers with varied expertise, encompassing university research groups, research institutes, public entities, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. In this article, TRIQUETRAs overall methodology is presented, and preliminary results concerning risk identification, TRIQUETRAs knowledge base, as well as novel sensors and coatings, are discussed.

Over the past few decades, the growing prevalence of digitization in acquiring data has significantly transformed the landscape of archaeological fieldwork, influencing both methodology and interpretation. The integration of digital photogrammetry and laser scanning technologies in archaeology has transformed data acquisition, enabling efficient and precise documentation. However, this digital shift raises concerns about information overload, the potential loss of on-site insights, and the need for suitable data management methods. Over the past 15 years, digital tools like photogrammetry, laser scanning, and unmanned aerial vehicles have advanced cultural heritage documentation. These methods offer detailed 3D models of archaeological sites, artifacts, and monuments, with evolving accessibility and user friendliness. This paper delves into methods for documenting cultural heritage, examining the implications of various approaches on the archaeologist’s workflow and on the field as a whole.

Between 1933 and 1943, Italy and Spain exchanged copies of Roman statues as symbolic gestures, to substantiate their claims to a shared classical heritage of ‘imperial greatness’. Using press reports and documentary film excerpts the article reconstructs public events that took place in Merida, Tarragona, Palma, and Zaragoza and assesses their impact. Behind these exchanges, and public ceremonies staged on their occasion, lay the Fascist concept of romanità: an archaeologically and aesthetically charged discourse placing Late-Republican and Early-Imperial Roman heritage in the epicentre of Fascist identity politics. Through improvised public performances of romanità, classical materialities, monumental as well as spatial, were imbued with Fascist dynamics, as the past turned into the present and projected into the future. Through individual and collective performance these ceremonies embodied a primeval Fascist ideal that appeared at once spectacular and modern.

To define the key role that ICT plays in its development course, the European Union (EU) has developed a composite indicator, the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), to assess the digital policy performance of its Member States. In the current work, an attempt is made to evaluate the performance of the EU countries on the digital economy and society with respect to implemented EU digital policies by studying the five dimensions of the DESI for the years 2014–2019, using the corresponding DESI reports (DESI 2015 – DESI 2020). Moreover, the digital convergence among EU Member States, in terms of similarity of their performance in the five dimensions of the DESI by grouping them according to the optimal number of clusters, is also examined. Since the optimal number of clusters is two, EU Member States are classified in two groups, one of high and one of low performance in the five dimensions of the DESI. The evolution of each member country and the possible transitions from one group to another during the years 2014–2019 is also a point of interest. The grouping of EU Member States into the two clusters showed that socioeconomic factors may affect the overall DESI. Linear mixed effect models confirm the positive effect of Gross Domestic Product per capita, the public expenditure for education and research and development (R&D) on the DESI and the negative effect of the average number of weekly working hours. The results could be used to reform the existing EU digital policies and identify areas where further improvement is needed.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2023Publisher:The Pennsylvania State University Press Authors: Vlasis Vlasidis;Vlasis Vlasidis;Abstract The purpose of this article is to present and explain the very complex and quite enigmatic economic relations between the Polish People’s Republic and the Kingdom of Greece, which belonged to different political and military blocks during the Cold War. The relationship between the two countries developed as a matter of priority, in contrast to what was happening in Europe at the time, and was not influenced by internal political developments. Although Greece was in a civil war and Poland was supporting the Greek Communists, both countries sought to reestablish diplomatic and commercial relations. In the 1950s, relations between them began to develop, and in the 1960s, they had reached an ultimate level. Poland initially exported capital goods to Greece and then also expanded trade relations by exporting consumer goods too. Poland also imported agricultural products and minerals mainly from Greece and made significant investments in Greece by building many factories there. Even the compensation issue, which was considered intractable, came to an end after brief negotiations for the benefit of both parties. Economic relations remained stable even during the dictatorship in Greece. At the same time, athletic and cultural relations were developed, with Poland taking most of the initiative.

The effectiveness of the economic policies implemented by a country/region directly affects its economic growth potential. Cultural Heritage Festivals are a sector of the creative economy that, by promoting culture, may have a significant impact on national/regional sustainable economic development. This study assesses the implementation of the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and the estimation of the Willingness To Pay (WTP) demand curve, using data collected for the Kalamata Dance Festival as a case study, in order to evaluate creative economy investments. The results obtained indicate that the CVM is an appropriate method for evaluating festivals and suggest that females, spectators with high incomes and high educational levels, and visitors to Kalamata (non-residents) show an increased Willingness To Pay. These findings can be useful to cultural heritage festival organizers in developing appropriate policy strategies: targeting the social groups with the greatest Willingness To Pay; adjusting the pricing mechanism accordingly; modifying annual memberships/donations/sponsorships, indirect resources, and tax revenues and grants; and optimizing investments and allocating resources. Furthermore, the findings of this study will be particularly useful for Greece in designing relevant cultural sustainable development policies for exploiting the potential of the Cultural Heritage Festival, in synergy with the tourism sector, which already contributes a major share to the country’s GDP.
