    Abstract Some studies on Ibn al-Sirrī, a Christian author and translator from the 9th century, have remained unpublished since limited discoveries were made after 1987. Identifying the homilies discussed in this study will enable scholars to explore various aspects. First, it will facilitate the study of his theological vocabulary, which appears to represent a form of medieval ecumenical discourse. A thorough examination of his style may also uncover additional works attributed to him.

    Abstract This article investigates a little-known yet highly significant facet of the Arabic liturgical Gospel books – the commentary that was introduced into the Gospel readings from at least the 11th century to the 19th century, notably during the time of Patriarch Athanasios III Dabbās, the last publisher to include this commentary. This study aims to shed light on the origin and evolution of this commentary, categorize its contents, and evaluate its theological importance in the context of the Arab Christian tradition. By offering fresh perspectives on the composition of Lectionary commentaries, this research enriches our comprehension of the history and theology of the Arab Christian tradition.

    AbstractThe elegy of Balqis holds a significant place in contemporary Arabic poetry, renowned for its length and magnificence. Within its verses lie encrypted structures and enigmatic ideas, challenging literary scholars to decode its symbols. Yet it has received relatively little scholarly attention concerning phono-semantics. To address this gap, this descriptive-analytical study deciphered many of the symbols and words within poetic texts and a prosodic analysis revealed the correlation between specific phonetic features (voiced and voiceless sounds) and the semantic content (themes, emotions) of the poem. Furthermore, to achieve scientific accuracy, this work calculated the percentage of voiced and voiceless sounds, gutturalization, for each poetic segment. Results revealed that the ratio of voiceless (1612 sounds = 17%) to voiced sounds (3204 sounds = 34%) in the elegy has deviated markedly from established speech patterns (5 to 20%), rendering the recorded percentage of these sounds notably elevated, or even exceedingly high. The current study holds significant importance as an extensive search of databases, including academic search engines, peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and linguistic resources spanning the past decade, has not uncovered any previous attempts to analyze this specific elegy from a phono-semantic perspective. Finally, suggestions for future research are presented to serve as the foundation for forthcoming studies.

    The sentence-initial coordinating conjunctions (and, but), referred to in the literature as SIA and SIB, have been well established as discourse markers beyond their syntactic function as connectors of related propositions. In reference to the proof-editing process of The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran’s most internationally acclaimed work in English, records show that Gibran tends to “overuse” “Ands” and “Buts”. In this context, this study traces Gibran’s use of sentence-initial coordinating conjunctions (and, but) in The Prophet and his seven other works in English, attempting to determine whether his use of SIA and SIB can be stylistically characterized. In this context, this study adopts a corpus stylistics approach to look into the frequency of SIA and SIB across Gibran’s English works. The findings of this study reveal that Gibran’s frequent use of SIA and SIB is statistically “meaningful” and his use of SIA and SIB is a “conscious” act of discourse marking, similar in nature to their “unique” use in King James Bible and William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience (Gibran’s most influential and inspirational literary sources). In addition, the collocational networks for both SIA and SIB display that Gibran depends heavily on the coordinating conjunction (and) to verbalize his arguments and points of view, shifting his prose-poetry as close as possible to “orality”—a biblical stylistic feature par excellence

    AbstractIn this study of image-making, it is argued that from the Middle Ages to the Modern period in Lebanon, coexistence between Christians and Muslims, who maintained contact alternately as a minority or dominant culture, was defined by fundamental ideas about sacred art, namely, the embodiment and depiction of the divine. The central premise holds that in Christianity paintings of a religious character are of importance because they reaffirm belief in the doctrine of incarnation, and thus Christ’s humanity. In Islam, by comparison, such art is idolatrous and deserving of censure. The opposite is asserted: God is invisible, and, therefore, paintings of the divine are impermissible. However, denunciation by Islamic scholars was not absolute; there was no disapproval if imagery did not violate Qur’anic proscription against idol-worship. A more nuanced discussion of the Arab literature demonstrates not only Muslim disavowal and episodes of iconoclasm, but also fascination with and commentary on Christian art. Such views informed Christian-Muslim debate over the value and validity of image-making in Modern-era Lebanon, which was further aroused by European developments in the science of optics, based partly on the works of Arab scientists. The advent of photography offered new ways of seeing the world, and discussion among Lebanese Muslim scholars focused on the efficacy and malevolence of optical technology in Arab society and culture. Outright condemnation of image-making was tempered by views condoning certain artistic practices.

    The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in the middle of 2021 has put at stake and turned to shock the world community. The world, which was fighting COVID-19, faced more concerns about the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. It became not only a concern of Middle East countries, but it raised questions in Europe too. While the Middle East countries were anxious about security issues in the region, Europe was anxious about the mass migration of refugees. Russia, the country which is crucially interested in stable peace in the Middle East, and China, which is cooperating with Afghanistan in the economic sector, began negotiations with the Taliban government to stabilize the situation peacefully after the withdrawal of American troops.The article analyzes the changes in US policy in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of troops in August 2021. The withdrawal of the US military contingent from Afghanistan has changed the balance of power in Central Asia, which, on the one hand, creates new risks to international security, and on the other hand, opens up new opportunities for interested players in the international arena in the region. In the new conditions, the United States is forced to restructure its policy towards Afghanistan and change its security strategy in accordance with the new balance of forces in the region. The findings of the study relate to the actual interests of the United States in the field of security in Afghanistan and in the Central Asian region as a whole.

    Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a rare and unusual disease, suspected clinically and confirmed radiologically. It represents a duodenal obstruction secondary to the impingement of the third portion of the duodenum between the abdominal aorta (AA) and the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) due to decreased intraabdominal fat. High morbidity and mortality rates are linked to missed or late diagnosis that can lead to complications, such as gastric perforation and gastric hemorrhage. We present the case of a 33-year-old man who was not previously known to have a SMAS, who presented to the emergency department with signs of septic shock, complaining of fever and respiratory symptoms for several days. Investigations showed aspiration pneumonia secondary to an upper gastrointestinal obstruction with signs of SMAS on a computed tomography (CT) scanner. Acute and rapid deterioration led to cardiac arrest and death. Through this article, we highlight the importance of early and correct diagnosis of SMAS which can sometimes be challenging, since no number is strictly diagnostic and radiological images must be interpreted in light of the clinical history and physical examination.

    A widespread revolt during the months of April and May 2021 in the Palestinian city of Jerusalem, also known as Habbet Ayyar, responded to Israeli actions aiming to ethnically cleanse and force out residents from the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem, where approximately 3000 people reside, and to limit the movement and entry of Palestinians to Al-Aqsa Mosque. These measures were met with an unprecedented wave of youth-led protests against the Israeli army, police, security agencies, and settlers. Habbet Ayyar stands out not only for its innovative and effective use of new media to amplify the protests beyond Israel’s sphere of influence and control, but also for the unity displayed by fragmented Palestinians as they confronted Israel. By exploring the larger historical and geographical context of the movement that led to Habbet Ayyar, this article aims to understand how Palestinians have utilized, for the past 20 years, new media as a battleground—despite enforced digital colonialism—and how these media served to articulate and create what I call a digital “floating homeland”. The concept of a “floating homeland” is useful for exploring how the Palestinian virtual social movement has redefined and reconnected with Palestine beyond Israel’s control and fragmentation. This digital homeland is constructed through new technologies that have reshaped Palestinian self-identification and allowed for a virtual and digital reconceptualization of a borderless Palestine.

    Abstract Some studies on Ibn al-Sirrī, a Christian author and translator from the 9th century, have remained unpublished since limited discoveries were made after 1987. Identifying the homilies discussed in this study will enable scholars to explore various aspects. First, it will facilitate the study of his theological vocabulary, which appears to represent a form of medieval ecumenical discourse. A thorough examination of his style may also uncover additional works attributed to him.

    Abstract This article investigates a little-known yet highly significant facet of the Arabic liturgical Gospel books – the commentary that was introduced into the Gospel readings from at least the 11th century to the 19th century, notably during the time of Patriarch Athanasios III Dabbās, the last publisher to include this commentary. This study aims to shed light on the origin and evolution of this commentary, categorize its contents, and evaluate its theological importance in the context of the Arab Christian tradition. By offering fresh perspectives on the composition of Lectionary commentaries, this research enriches our comprehension of the history and theology of the Arab Christian tradition.

    AbstractThe elegy of Balqis holds a significant place in contemporary Arabic poetry, renowned for its length and magnificence. Within its verses lie encrypted structures and enigmatic ideas, challenging literary scholars to decode its symbols. Yet it has received relatively little scholarly attention concerning phono-semantics. To address this gap, this descriptive-analytical study deciphered many of the symbols and words within poetic texts and a prosodic analysis revealed the correlation between specific phonetic features (voiced and voiceless sounds) and the semantic content (themes, emotions) of the poem. Furthermore, to achieve scientific accuracy, this work calculated the percentage of voiced and voiceless sounds, gutturalization, for each poetic segment. Results revealed that the ratio of voiceless (1612 sounds = 17%) to voiced sounds (3204 sounds = 34%) in the elegy has deviated markedly from established speech patterns (5 to 20%), rendering the recorded percentage of these sounds notably elevated, or even exceedingly high. The current study holds significant importance as an extensive search of databases, including academic search engines, peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and linguistic resources spanning the past decade, has not uncovered any previous attempts to analyze this specific elegy from a phono-semantic perspective. Finally, suggestions for future research are presented to serve as the foundation for forthcoming studies.

    The sentence-initial coordinating conjunctions (and, but), referred to in the literature as SIA and SIB, have been well established as discourse markers beyond their syntactic function as connectors of related propositions. In reference to the proof-editing process of The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran’s most internationally acclaimed work in English, records show that Gibran tends to “overuse” “Ands” and “Buts”. In this context, this study traces Gibran’s use of sentence-initial coordinating conjunctions (and, but) in The Prophet and his seven other works in English, attempting to determine whether his use of SIA and SIB can be stylistically characterized. In this context, this study adopts a corpus stylistics approach to look into the frequency of SIA and SIB across Gibran’s English works. The findings of this study reveal that Gibran’s frequent use of SIA and SIB is statistically “meaningful” and his use of SIA and SIB is a “conscious” act of discourse marking, similar in nature to their “unique” use in King James Bible and William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience (Gibran’s most influential and inspirational literary sources). In addition, the collocational networks for both SIA and SIB display that Gibran depends heavily on the coordinating conjunction (and) to verbalize his arguments and points of view, shifting his prose-poetry as close as possible to “orality”—a biblical stylistic feature par excellence

    AbstractIn this study of image-making, it is argued that from the Middle Ages to the Modern period in Lebanon, coexistence between Christians and Muslims, who maintained contact alternately as a minority or dominant culture, was defined by fundamental ideas about sacred art, namely, the embodiment and depiction of the divine. The central premise holds that in Christianity paintings of a religious character are of importance because they reaffirm belief in the doctrine of incarnation, and thus Christ’s humanity. In Islam, by comparison, such art is idolatrous and deserving of censure. The opposite is asserted: God is invisible, and, therefore, paintings of the divine are impermissible. However, denunciation by Islamic scholars was not absolute; there was no disapproval if imagery did not violate Qur’anic proscription against idol-worship. A more nuanced discussion of the Arab literature demonstrates not only Muslim disavowal and episodes of iconoclasm, but also fascination with and commentary on Christian art. Such views informed Christian-Muslim debate over the value and validity of image-making in Modern-era Lebanon, which was further aroused by European developments in the science of optics, based partly on the works of Arab scientists. The advent of photography offered new ways of seeing the world, and discussion among Lebanese Muslim scholars focused on the efficacy and malevolence of optical technology in Arab society and culture. Outright condemnation of image-making was tempered by views condoning certain artistic practices.

    The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in the middle of 2021 has put at stake and turned to shock the world community. The world, which was fighting COVID-19, faced more concerns about the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. It became not only a concern of Middle East countries, but it raised questions in Europe too. While the Middle East countries were anxious about security issues in the region, Europe was anxious about the mass migration of refugees. Russia, the country which is crucially interested in stable peace in the Middle East, and China, which is cooperating with Afghanistan in the economic sector, began negotiations with the Taliban government to stabilize the situation peacefully after the withdrawal of American troops.The article analyzes the changes in US policy in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of troops in August 2021. The withdrawal of the US military contingent from Afghanistan has changed the balance of power in Central Asia, which, on the one hand, creates new risks to international security, and on the other hand, opens up new opportunities for interested players in the international arena in the region. In the new conditions, the United States is forced to restructure its policy towards Afghanistan and change its security strategy in accordance with the new balance of forces in the region. The findings of the study relate to the actual interests of the United States in the field of security in Afghanistan and in the Central Asian region as a whole.

    Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a rare and unusual disease, suspected clinically and confirmed radiologically. It represents a duodenal obstruction secondary to the impingement of the third portion of the duodenum between the abdominal aorta (AA) and the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) due to decreased intraabdominal fat. High morbidity and mortality rates are linked to missed or late diagnosis that can lead to complications, such as gastric perforation and gastric hemorrhage. We present the case of a 33-year-old man who was not previously known to have a SMAS, who presented to the emergency department with signs of septic shock, complaining of fever and respiratory symptoms for several days. Investigations showed aspiration pneumonia secondary to an upper gastrointestinal obstruction with signs of SMAS on a computed tomography (CT) scanner. Acute and rapid deterioration led to cardiac arrest and death. Through this article, we highlight the importance of early and correct diagnosis of SMAS which can sometimes be challenging, since no number is strictly diagnostic and radiological images must be interpreted in light of the clinical history and physical examination.

    A widespread revolt during the months of April and May 2021 in the Palestinian city of Jerusalem, also known as Habbet Ayyar, responded to Israeli actions aiming to ethnically cleanse and force out residents from the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem, where approximately 3000 people reside, and to limit the movement and entry of Palestinians to Al-Aqsa Mosque. These measures were met with an unprecedented wave of youth-led protests against the Israeli army, police, security agencies, and settlers. Habbet Ayyar stands out not only for its innovative and effective use of new media to amplify the protests beyond Israel’s sphere of influence and control, but also for the unity displayed by fragmented Palestinians as they confronted Israel. By exploring the larger historical and geographical context of the movement that led to Habbet Ayyar, this article aims to understand how Palestinians have utilized, for the past 20 years, new media as a battleground—despite enforced digital colonialism—and how these media served to articulate and create what I call a digital “floating homeland”. The concept of a “floating homeland” is useful for exploring how the Palestinian virtual social movement has redefined and reconnected with Palestine beyond Israel’s control and fragmentation. This digital homeland is constructed through new technologies that have reshaped Palestinian self-identification and allowed for a virtual and digital reconceptualization of a borderless Palestine.
