Logical positivism is often characterized as a set of naïve doctrines on meaning, method, and metaphysics. In recent decades, however, historians have dismissed this view as a gross misinterpretation. This new scholarship raises a number of questions. When did the standard reading emerge? Why did it become so popular? And how could commentators have been so wrong? This paper reconstructs the history of a ‘caricature’ and rejects the hypothesis that it was developed by ill-informed Anglophone scholars who failed to appreciate the subtleties of European scientific philosophy. I argue that the received view has a more complicated history and was frequently promoted by the European positivists themselves. I show that it has roots in both American and European scientific philosophy and emerged as a result of the complex interplay between the two communities in the years before the intellectual migration.

This volume fills a gap in current research on the Hellenistic Peloponnese, complementing and challenging traditional interpretations by adopting new perspectives on its complex social and political history in response to emerging trends in research. By examining aspects of the region's interstate relations, contemporary politics and modes of representation that have been relatively little studied to date, it affords a much more well-rounded picture of the Hellenistic Peloponnese and a rich basis for broadening scholarly debate and stimulating further research on the area. Each chapter promotes interdisciplinary approaches to a wide range of ancient evidence and material culture, and offers a renewed understanding of how socio-political transformations unfolded within the region. Together they shed new light on key agents of the period and their interactions, material evidence and political history both in and beyond the Peloponnese – from the enduring Macedonian influence in the 3rd century BCE and the violence and terror tactics deployed within the Achaian Koinon, to strategies of identity construction and memory politics wielded by local elites – and will be crucial points of reference for graduate students and scholars with an interest in the region.

The origins of contemporary orthopedics can be traced all the way back to antiquity. Despite the absence of modern imaging techniques, a few bright minds were able to lay the groundwork for understanding these fractures. This historical review will cover the process behind the various treatments for elbow fractures, such as splinting and casting, mobilization, amputation, fracture fixation, arthroplasty, and arthroscopy.

In the age of the sixth extinction, human interventions to save endangered species have become bigger, bolder and costlier than ever. Yet, policies of species conservation have also favoured non-intervention, furthering the idea that humans have tampered too much with wildness and wilderness. This article examines a reintroduction of European Bison ( Bison bonasus , also known as wisent) into the South-Western Carpathians of Romania in the 2010s. It compares it with longer-term recovery efforts in the Białowieża forest in Poland and reveals how interventions and non-interventions have been practised in the conservation history of this species. I trace the complexities of lived reintroduction processes, both contemporary and historical. I show that practices of recovering European bison have (slowly) shifted away from a controlling approach to reintroductions inspired by livestock breeding, and towards a hands-off rewilding approach. Yet, entangled human–wildlife histories, in which management has been paramount, challenge contemporary non-intervention rewilding paradigms that advocate for the autonomy and agency of wildlife. Reintroduction managers walk a fine line between intervention and relinquishment, care and containment, permanently recalibrating human–animal relationships. This paper considers two point boundary value problems for conservative systems defined in multiple coordinate systems, and develops a flexible a-posteriori framework for computer assisted existence proofs. Our framework is applied to the study collision and near collision orbits in the circular restricted three body problem. In this case the coordinate systems are the standard rotating coordinates, and the two Levi-Civita coordinate systems regularizing collisions with each of the massive primaries. The proposed framework is used to prove the existence of a number of orbits which have long been studied numerically in the celestial mechanics literature, but for which there are no existing analytical proofs at the mass and energy values considered here. These include transverse ejection/collisions from one primary body to the other, Str\"{o}mgren's assymptotic periodic orbits (transverse homoclinics for $L_{4,5}$), families of periodic orbits passing through collision, and orbits connecting $L_4$ to ejection or collision. Knowledge of the paleoenvironment is crucial to understand organic matter enrichment and shale gas development. Like organic matter, siliceous microfossils such as radiolarians and sponge spicules are widely distributed in Late Ordovician to early Silurian shales. However, there are few characterizations of the depositional conditions of siliceous microfossil-enriched layers. Here siliceous microfossil-rich shales from the Ordovician–Silurian transition in South China were selected for this study. We used major/trace element geochemistry to determine the sedimentary environment of siliceous microfossil-rich shale and to strengthen the understanding of the effect of siliceous microorganisms on organic matter enrichment. Our results show that most siliceous microfossils were deposited in anoxic reducing conditions with the presence of free hydrogen sulfide and accompanied by a moderately to weakly restricted seawater circulation. In addition, the nutrient-rich water bodies could upwell from the deep sea into the Yangtze Sea, and siliceous microfossil-rich shale was deposited during a period of high primary productivity. The shale layers of siliceous microfossils generally correspond to high gas-producing intervals and high organic matter abundance. The accumulation and preservation of organic matter in siliceous microfossil-rich shales is attributed to anoxic benthic conditions, high levels of primary productivity and flourishing of siliceous microorganisms. This study addresses the knowledge gap of the depositional conditions in siliceous microfossil-rich shale, and can help better understand the history of organic matter accumulation.
