    Abstract Systemic Functional Linguistics (hereafter SFL) hypothesizes that language systems globally follow two probability distributions (equiprobable or maximally skewed). Accordingly, a particular register, corpus or text is defined probabilistically as a local resetting of the global probabilities; or in other words, a statistical deviation of the local probabilities from the two global distributions of language. However, the original context in which this hypothesis has been proposed and, later, tested is the lexico-grammar. The current study addresses this hypothesis, both computationally and statistically, with respect to the discourse semantics system of appraisal. Through the implementation of automatic classification of least delicate engagement and attitude polarity in fifteen English corpora, this paper approaches three questions concerning the global patterns of appraisal choices in English, the intrastratal conditioning between the two appraisal subsystems, and the local, register-specific deviations of local probabilities. The computationally-based statistical analysis indicates that, globally, least delicate engagement and attitude polarity are equiprobable, whereas, within the polarity subsystem itself, choices are skewed in favor of the positive. The findings of this paper also show how local deviations of appraisal probabilities in the corpora cluster the relevant registers topologically in terms of what is contextually expected and what is contextually divergent. A major implication of this paper is that computational methods to large-scale corpora can substantiate the theoretical premises of SFL.

    Abstract Very little has been written on the grammar of complement constructions in Australian Aboriginal languages. Grammars rarely provide much information, and few references treat the topic either in particular languages or cross-linguistically. This paper addresses this lacuna with a typological investigation of thought complements in the languages of the continent. Some languages show evidence of a separate construction type for coding propositional thoughts. In most Australian languages it seems that a limited range of verbs can be employed in the matrix clause; these usually include generic verbs meaning ‘say, do, think’ or ‘hear, think’. Two other constructions resemble the reported thought construction, a type of desiderative, and mistaken belief constructions; the major grammatical features of these constructions are discussed. In most languages there is no compelling evidence that the clause of thought serves as an argument of the matrix clause, and thus the construction is not a complement construction in the traditional sense. Rather, what is involved is framing – a relation distinct from both embedding and dependency; some issues with this analysis are discussed and resolved. The investigation is based on a corpus of just over seventy languages, partly a convenience sample (depending on available information) and partly a representative one (the major geographical regions and families are included, albeit unevenly).

    Abstract Natural disasters, such as what are known in English as ‘floods’ and ‘wildfires’, are increasingly a topic of concern due to the climate emergency, and their vocabulary and public discourses hold much to be explored through linguistics. This article inaugurates the examination of public discourse about extreme weather events through semantically-enhanced discourse studies, an approach which is based on Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) and developed herein. Taking the example of floods in the particular geographic, cultural and historical environment of the Australian state of Queensland in 2011, this transtextual study draws on a public inquiry into the event and English as spoken in Australia, more broadly, along with media reports, and literature from humanities and social sciences. Five case studies of vocabulary and discourse patterns are presented to cast cultural and semantic spotlights on the public discourses. It is demonstrated that this approach can provide high resolution analysis of discourse and bring out cultural and historical factors at play in extreme weather language thereby contributing to disaster linguistics, climate change semantics and public discourse studies.

    Abstract The study of how conversational partners align language behavior has been given much attention in psychology, linguistics and sociology. Prominent frameworks for investigating this type of cooperative behavior include dialogic resonance, the interactive alignment model, abstract structural priming, and format tying. Yet, we do not have estimates of the overall amount of discourse alignment in human conversation. Obtaining estimates is challenging because alignment is complex, occurring at many different levels, and the resources needed to manually annotate large corpora to measure all aspects of discourse alignment restrict rapid progress on the issue. However, recent NLP research has developed systems to estimate alignment at least at the lexical and syntactic levels of conversation. While such systems come with error rates and lack the precision of manual annotation, interesting findings are emerging such as a recent study reporting grammatical alignment levels in the British National Corpus (BNC) was not particularly high, possibly what would be expected by chance. This is a controversial paper. The current study therefore, replicates the study in the recently released BNC 2014 spoken, finding in this corpus syntactic similarity is also close to the alignment one would get by randomly pairing conversational turns. The study goes further, finding the most frequent similarity level between utterances is zero, and that there exist no convincing cases of abstract structural alignment. Extending the research to child language corpora, grammatical alignment between children and adults is slightly above chance, though the most frequent level of syntactic similarity is zero, with no convincing cases of an abstract structure used by a child because their adult interlocutor had primed them. The findings might mediate theory-building that assumes discourse alignment at the grammatical level is widespread throughout conversation between adults or adults and children.

    Abstract Hyphenated compounds have largely been neglected in the studies of compounding, which have seldom analysed compounds in context. In this study, we argue that the hyphen use in compounds is strongly motivated. Hyphenation is used when words form a unit, which reduces the possibility of parsing them into separate units or other forms. The current study adopts a new perspective on contextual factors, namely, which part of speech (PoS) the compound as a whole belongs to and how people correctly parse a compound into a unit. This process can be observed and analysed by considering examples. This study therefore holds that hyphenation might have gradually become a compounding technique that differs from general compounding principles. To better understand hyphenated compounds and the motivation for using hyphenation, we conduct a quantitative investigation into their distribution frequency to explore how English hyphenated compounds have been used in over the last 200 years. Diachronic change in the frequency of the distribution for compounds has seldom been considered. This question is explored by using frequency data obtained from the three databases that contain hyphenated compounds. Diachronic analysis shows that the frequencies of tokens and types in hyphenated compounds have been increasing, and changes in both frequencies follow the S-curve model. Historical evidence shows that hyphenation in compounds, as an orthographic form, does not seem to disappear easily. Familiarity and economy, as suggested in the cognitive studies of compounding, cannot adequately explain this phenomenon. The three databases that we used provide cross-verification that suggests that hyphenation has evolved into a compounding technique. Language users probably unconsciously take advantage of the discriminative learning model to remind themselves that these combinations should be parsed differently. Thus the hyphenation compounding technique facilitates communication efficiency. Overall, this study significantly enhances our understanding of the nature of compounding, the motivations for using hyphenation, and its cognitive processing.

    Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate a specific naming strategy, which is based on compounding and exemplification, examining data from Chinese. We will focus on what we will label ‘exemplar-based compounds’, i.e. compounds consisting of at least one lexeme denoting an exemplar of the category referred to by the whole compound. We propose that ‘exemplar-based’ compounds in Chinese be divided into two macro-types: (1) [ exemplar 1 -exemplar 2 ] category , in which the exemplars may or may not exhaustively list the members of the category denoted by the compound (e.g. dāoqiāng ‘sword-spear, sword and spear > ‘swords, spears and similar things = weapons’); (2) [ exemplar-class] category , in which the first constituent exemplifies the class denoted by the second one; this type includes compounds in which the second constituent is a classifier (e.g. niǎozhī ‘bird’, chuanzhī ‘ship’, with zhī ‘ clf ’). After a detailed discussion of exemplar-driven category naming and of compounding and classifiers in Chinese, we will present the results of a corpus-based study, based on data of Premodern and Modern Chinese. We will show how the exemplar-driven abstraction characterising these constructions evolved into systematic reference to a category and to its individual items, revealing a change from a procedural category construction to a naming concept label.

    The aim of this special issue is to describe the process of ad hoc categorization in discourse, by focusing on its close relation to what has been labeled languaging. The construction of categories is much more pervasive in discourse than one might assume, involving the use of various discourse strategies through which speakers concur towards as diverse goals as the individuation of the relevant exemplars to build the category upon, the overt naming of the category, its fine-tuning, and the delimitation of its boundaries. All these strategies represent an important aspect of the speakers’ cooperative behavior, and involve the (often creative) exploitation of grammatical domains such as number and plurality, lexical derivation, and connectives, as well as the use of more transparent constructions through which categories are constructed and discursively manipulated (general extenders, exemplification/reformulation constructions, lists, etc.). The commonalities and differences characterizing these linguistic means, however, have never been systematically investigated under the umbrella of the process of ad hoc categorization. The present special issue aims to fill such a gap.

    Abstract The paper investigates the use and functions of barra in Italian. Barra, the lexical realization of the punctuation mark , has recently come to be used also in online settings and in everyday speech. In written, formal contexts, this punctuation mark is mainly used for the expression of alternatives (also with an adjunctive sense). In contemporary Italian, however, it is developing a new function as a non-exhaustive connective. After describing the incipient grammaticalization of barra, the morphology and semantics of the constructions with barra are discussed. The paper also shows the possible development of a grammatical element from the verbalization of a punctuation mark. This eventuality has become more frequent in the Internet era, where – by virtue of the diffusion of visualized language – not only features of colloquial speech get into written language, but also, and somewhat unexpectedly, vice versa.

    This article addresses two previously unresolved puzzles regarding the relationship between temporal and spatial conceptualizations in Mandarin Chinese. First, apparently conflicting data have led to disagreement over whether temporal usages of the terms qian and hou, whose spatial meanings of ‘front’ and ‘back’ are often considered to be primary, are based on a canonical facing of Ego towards past or towards future. We argue that this issue can be resolved by positing invariant Sequential (S-)Time meanings of, respectively, EARLIER and LATER for these terms, with variable USES to refer to past and future events and perspectives in Deictic (D-)Time being secondary and contextually governed. Second, the question of which of the sagittal, vertical and lateral orientational axes are more fundamental in spatio-temporal language and cognition for Mandarin Chinese speakers has been much debated. We review these issues, propose solutions based on linguistic analysis and report five experiments to test the analysis. Our findings are consistent with our analysis of the primacy in Mandarin Chinese of the invariant S-time construal of the terms qian ‘front’ (=EARLIER) and hou ‘back’ (=LATER) over their contextually governed D-time interpretations as referring to pastness and futurity. We find also that the preferred lexicalization of temporal relations between events by Mandarin speakers involves the sagittal axis terms qian and hou, but this does not mean that this linguistic conceptualization is also imposed by speakers as a preference for the sagittal axis for non-linguistic representations of event sequences. Finally, our data indicate that the temporal meanings of qian and hou (EARLIER and LATER) are more salient for speakers than their spatial meanings (front and back) in motion event conceptualizations.

    This article explores the interrelatedness of societal changes and changes in language practices. By using a combination of corpus linguistic and socio-pragmatic methods, we track diachronic changes in word patterns and interpret findings in the framework of democratization. The data comes from a small and representative corpus of British English (ARCHER-3.1) and from three "big data" sets (Google Books, British Library Newspapers and The Economist). We suggest that data triangulation, including sociohistorical contextualization, allows us to conclude that especially from the mid-nineteenth century onwards words signaling social status and referring to individuals have decreased and from the first decades of the twentieth century onwards words referring to collectivities of people have increased.     Abstract Systemic Functional Linguistics (hereafter SFL) hypothesizes that language systems globally follow two probability distributions (equiprobable or maximally skewed). Accordingly, a particular register, corpus or text is defined probabilistically as a local resetting of the global probabilities; or in other words, a statistical deviation of the local probabilities from the two global distributions of language. However, the original context in which this hypothesis has been proposed and, later, tested is the lexico-grammar. The current study addresses this hypothesis, both computationally and statistically, with respect to the discourse semantics system of appraisal. Through the implementation of automatic classification of least delicate engagement and attitude polarity in fifteen English corpora, this paper approaches three questions concerning the global patterns of appraisal choices in English, the intrastratal conditioning between the two appraisal subsystems, and the local, register-specific deviations of local probabilities. The computationally-based statistical analysis indicates that, globally, least delicate engagement and attitude polarity are equiprobable, whereas, within the polarity subsystem itself, choices are skewed in favor of the positive. The findings of this paper also show how local deviations of appraisal probabilities in the corpora cluster the relevant registers topologically in terms of what is contextually expected and what is contextually divergent. A major implication of this paper is that computational methods to large-scale corpora can substantiate the theoretical premises of SFL.

    Abstract Very little has been written on the grammar of complement constructions in Australian Aboriginal languages. Grammars rarely provide much information, and few references treat the topic either in particular languages or cross-linguistically. This paper addresses this lacuna with a typological investigation of thought complements in the languages of the continent. Some languages show evidence of a separate construction type for coding propositional thoughts. In most Australian languages it seems that a limited range of verbs can be employed in the matrix clause; these usually include generic verbs meaning ‘say, do, think’ or ‘hear, think’. Two other constructions resemble the reported thought construction, a type of desiderative, and mistaken belief constructions; the major grammatical features of these constructions are discussed. In most languages there is no compelling evidence that the clause of thought serves as an argument of the matrix clause, and thus the construction is not a complement construction in the traditional sense. Rather, what is involved is framing – a relation distinct from both embedding and dependency; some issues with this analysis are discussed and resolved. The investigation is based on a corpus of just over seventy languages, partly a convenience sample (depending on available information) and partly a representative one (the major geographical regions and families are included, albeit unevenly).

    Abstract Natural disasters, such as what are known in English as ‘floods’ and ‘wildfires’, are increasingly a topic of concern due to the climate emergency, and their vocabulary and public discourses hold much to be explored through linguistics. This article inaugurates the examination of public discourse about extreme weather events through semantically-enhanced discourse studies, an approach which is based on Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) and developed herein. Taking the example of floods in the particular geographic, cultural and historical environment of the Australian state of Queensland in 2011, this transtextual study draws on a public inquiry into the event and English as spoken in Australia, more broadly, along with media reports, and literature from humanities and social sciences. Five case studies of vocabulary and discourse patterns are presented to cast cultural and semantic spotlights on the public discourses. It is demonstrated that this approach can provide high resolution analysis of discourse and bring out cultural and historical factors at play in extreme weather language thereby contributing to disaster linguistics, climate change semantics and public discourse studies.

    Abstract The study of how conversational partners align language behavior has been given much attention in psychology, linguistics and sociology. Prominent frameworks for investigating this type of cooperative behavior include dialogic resonance, the interactive alignment model, abstract structural priming, and format tying. Yet, we do not have estimates of the overall amount of discourse alignment in human conversation. Obtaining estimates is challenging because alignment is complex, occurring at many different levels, and the resources needed to manually annotate large corpora to measure all aspects of discourse alignment restrict rapid progress on the issue. However, recent NLP research has developed systems to estimate alignment at least at the lexical and syntactic levels of conversation. While such systems come with error rates and lack the precision of manual annotation, interesting findings are emerging such as a recent study reporting grammatical alignment levels in the British National Corpus (BNC) was not particularly high, possibly what would be expected by chance. This is a controversial paper. The current study therefore, replicates the study in the recently released BNC 2014 spoken, finding in this corpus syntactic similarity is also close to the alignment one would get by randomly pairing conversational turns. The study goes further, finding the most frequent similarity level between utterances is zero, and that there exist no convincing cases of abstract structural alignment. Extending the research to child language corpora, grammatical alignment between children and adults is slightly above chance, though the most frequent level of syntactic similarity is zero, with no convincing cases of an abstract structure used by a child because their adult interlocutor had primed them. The findings might mediate theory-building that assumes discourse alignment at the grammatical level is widespread throughout conversation between adults or adults and children.

    Abstract Hyphenated compounds have largely been neglected in the studies of compounding, which have seldom analysed compounds in context. In this study, we argue that the hyphen use in compounds is strongly motivated. Hyphenation is used when words form a unit, which reduces the possibility of parsing them into separate units or other forms. The current study adopts a new perspective on contextual factors, namely, which part of speech (PoS) the compound as a whole belongs to and how people correctly parse a compound into a unit. This process can be observed and analysed by considering examples. This study therefore holds that hyphenation might have gradually become a compounding technique that differs from general compounding principles. To better understand hyphenated compounds and the motivation for using hyphenation, we conduct a quantitative investigation into their distribution frequency to explore how English hyphenated compounds have been used in over the last 200 years. Diachronic change in the frequency of the distribution for compounds has seldom been considered. This question is explored by using frequency data obtained from the three databases that contain hyphenated compounds. Diachronic analysis shows that the frequencies of tokens and types in hyphenated compounds have been increasing, and changes in both frequencies follow the S-curve model. Historical evidence shows that hyphenation in compounds, as an orthographic form, does not seem to disappear easily. Familiarity and economy, as suggested in the cognitive studies of compounding, cannot adequately explain this phenomenon. The three databases that we used provide cross-verification that suggests that hyphenation has evolved into a compounding technique. Language users probably unconsciously take advantage of the discriminative learning model to remind themselves that these combinations should be parsed differently. Thus the hyphenation compounding technique facilitates communication efficiency. Overall, this study significantly enhances our understanding of the nature of compounding, the motivations for using hyphenation, and its cognitive processing.

    Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate a specific naming strategy, which is based on compounding and exemplification, examining data from Chinese. We will focus on what we will label ‘exemplar-based compounds’, i.e. compounds consisting of at least one lexeme denoting an exemplar of the category referred to by the whole compound. We propose that ‘exemplar-based’ compounds in Chinese be divided into two macro-types: (1) [ exemplar 1 -exemplar 2 ] category , in which the exemplars may or may not exhaustively list the members of the category denoted by the compound (e.g. dāoqiāng ‘sword-spear, sword and spear > ‘swords, spears and similar things = weapons’); (2) [ exemplar-class] category , in which the first constituent exemplifies the class denoted by the second one; this type includes compounds in which the second constituent is a classifier (e.g. niǎozhī ‘bird’, chuanzhī ‘ship’, with zhī ‘ clf ’). After a detailed discussion of exemplar-driven category naming and of compounding and classifiers in Chinese, we will present the results of a corpus-based study, based on data of Premodern and Modern Chinese. We will show how the exemplar-driven abstraction characterising these constructions evolved into systematic reference to a category and to its individual items, revealing a change from a procedural category construction to a naming concept label.

    The aim of this special issue is to describe the process of ad hoc categorization in discourse, by focusing on its close relation to what has been labeled languaging. The construction of categories is much more pervasive in discourse than one might assume, involving the use of various discourse strategies through which speakers concur towards as diverse goals as the individuation of the relevant exemplars to build the category upon, the overt naming of the category, its fine-tuning, and the delimitation of its boundaries. All these strategies represent an important aspect of the speakers’ cooperative behavior, and involve the (often creative) exploitation of grammatical domains such as number and plurality, lexical derivation, and connectives, as well as the use of more transparent constructions through which categories are constructed and discursively manipulated (general extenders, exemplification/reformulation constructions, lists, etc.). The commonalities and differences characterizing these linguistic means, however, have never been systematically investigated under the umbrella of the process of ad hoc categorization. The present special issue aims to fill such a gap.

    Abstract The paper investigates the use and functions of barra in Italian. Barra, the lexical realization of the punctuation mark , has recently come to be used also in online settings and in everyday speech. In written, formal contexts, this punctuation mark is mainly used for the expression of alternatives (also with an adjunctive sense). In contemporary Italian, however, it is developing a new function as a non-exhaustive connective. After describing the incipient grammaticalization of barra, the morphology and semantics of the constructions with barra are discussed. The paper also shows the possible development of a grammatical element from the verbalization of a punctuation mark. This eventuality has become more frequent in the Internet era, where – by virtue of the diffusion of visualized language – not only features of colloquial speech get into written language, but also, and somewhat unexpectedly, vice versa.

    This article addresses two previously unresolved puzzles regarding the relationship between temporal and spatial conceptualizations in Mandarin Chinese. First, apparently conflicting data have led to disagreement over whether temporal usages of the terms qian and hou, whose spatial meanings of ‘front’ and ‘back’ are often considered to be primary, are based on a canonical facing of Ego towards past or towards future. We argue that this issue can be resolved by positing invariant Sequential (S-)Time meanings of, respectively, EARLIER and LATER for these terms, with variable USES to refer to past and future events and perspectives in Deictic (D-)Time being secondary and contextually governed. Second, the question of which of the sagittal, vertical and lateral orientational axes are more fundamental in spatio-temporal language and cognition for Mandarin Chinese speakers has been much debated. We review these issues, propose solutions based on linguistic analysis and report five experiments to test the analysis. Our findings are consistent with our analysis of the primacy in Mandarin Chinese of the invariant S-time construal of the terms qian ‘front’ (=EARLIER) and hou ‘back’ (=LATER) over their contextually governed D-time interpretations as referring to pastness and futurity. We find also that the preferred lexicalization of temporal relations between events by Mandarin speakers involves the sagittal axis terms qian and hou, but this does not mean that this linguistic conceptualization is also imposed by speakers as a preference for the sagittal axis for non-linguistic representations of event sequences. Finally, our data indicate that the temporal meanings of qian and hou (EARLIER and LATER) are more salient for speakers than their spatial meanings (front and back) in motion event conceptualizations.

    This article explores the interrelatedness of societal changes and changes in language practices. By using a combination of corpus linguistic and socio-pragmatic methods, we track diachronic changes in word patterns and interpret findings in the framework of democratization. The data comes from a small and representative corpus of British English (ARCHER-3.1) and from three "big data" sets (Google Books, British Library Newspapers and The Economist). We suggest that data triangulation, including sociohistorical contextualization, allows us to conclude that especially from the mid-nineteenth century onwards words signaling social status and referring to individuals have decreased and from the first decades of the twentieth century onwards words referring to collectivities of people have increased.
