    Warmest thanks to Rafael Pass and Muthu Venkitasubramaniam for this issue's guest column, "Average-Case Complexity Through the Lens of Interactive Puzzles." When I mentioned to them that my introduction would have a section on Alan Selman's passing, they immediately wrote back that they were very sorry to hear of Alan's passing, and mentioned (as you will see discussed in the second page of their article), "The main problem that we are addressing actually goes back to a paper of Even, Selman, and Yacobi from 1984: "The Complexity of Promise Problems with Applications to Public-Key Cryptography'." It is beautiful, and a tribute to the lasting influence of Alan's research, that in the 2020s his work from many decades earlier is helping shape the field's dialogue.

    Alan L. Selman, who profoundly shaped the eld of computational complexity and who sup- ported and encouraged students and colleagues in so many ways, died on January 22, 2021 at the age of 79. On the pages that follow are six remembrances of him and his work from people who knew him well, ranging from the personal to the technical.     The conference was held from July 1st to July 4th at Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) in the heart of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, a historic city in Italy to the east of Rome. First Day On the rst day, a tutorial on Permissioned Blockchains took place. There, Roger Wattenhofer covered a variety of topics on permissioned and permissionless blockchains. The rst part started from the very basics, targeting an audience that has never heard of fault-tolerant distributed systems. In the second part, permissionless blockchains were explained, followed by the third and nal part, in which more advanced topics and current research were discussed. The 6-hour tutorial was well attended by researchers and students from various areas and the interactive format allowed the members of the audience to steer the talk into their preferred directions. In the evening, after the registration, the welcome reception with lots of delicious snacks and refreshing drinks took place.

    The 38th ACM SIGACT-SIGOPS Symposium on Principles of Distributed Computing (PODC 2019) was held on July 29-August 2, 2019 at the Double Tree Hilton hotel in Toronto, Canada. With three keynotes, over 40 accepted papers, over 20 accepted brief announcements, two workshops, and roughly 150 attendants, PODC 2019 constituted a composition of fascinating improvements in many areas of distributed and parallel computing. On the evening of the 31st of July, the conference banquet was held on a cruise over beautiful Lake Ontario and included the best papers award ceremony. The best paper award went to Yi-Jun Chang, and Thatchaphol Saranurak for their work titled, \Improved Distributed Expander Decomposition and Nearly Optimal Triangle Enumeration" [19]; two best student paper awards were given to Yi-Jun Chang, Manuela Fischer, and Yufan Zheng for their work titled, \The Complexity of (Δ + 1) Coloring in Congested Clique, Massively Parallel Computation, and Centralized Local Computation" [17] which was co-authored with Mohsen Gha ari, and Jara Uitto, and to Michal Dory and Dean Leitersdorf for the work on \Fast Approximate Shortest Paths in the Congested Clique" [16] which was co-authored with Keren Censor-Hillel, and Janne H. Korhonen. Congratulations to all the awardees and a special congratulations to Yi-Jun Chang for having received both awards! This review would be incomplete without mentioning perhaps one of the most notable results in the eld in recent years which was uploaded to the online archive just days before the conference gathered, and which was not presented at PODC 2019 but a ected many works presented at the conference: the work titled, ¶olylogarithmic-Time Deterministic Network Decomposition and Distributed Derandomization" [48] by Vaclav Rozhon, and Mohsen Gha ari. Throughout the entire conference there was talk regarding the implications of this work, culminating with perhaps one of the more memorable moments of PODC 2019, where Mohsen described this result during his talk on a di erent paper which he co-authored with Fabian Kuhn - Mohsen quoted from his and Kuhn's paper [31]: \we provide results that are in some sense the strongest that one can achieve, barring a major breakthrough", and on the next slide was that major breakthrough - a picture of Vaclav Rozhon along with the rst page of [48]. Congratulations to the authors on this work! We hope that this review will give readers the opportunity to experience some of PODC 2019 and potentially attend the conference in future years. Thank you to the organizers and authors for a captivating and though-provoking conference!

    The 2018 ACM Symposium on Parallelism in Algorithms and Architectures was held on July 1618 in Vienna, Austria. The conference took place on the TU Wien campus in the Engineering building, an ideal location that was walking distance to central Vienna as well as historic buildings like Karlskirche and St. Stephen's Cathedral. Thanks to the organizers, presenters and attendees for their hard work that made this conference possible!

    It's great to be back at PODC. I attended this conference religiously through 1992. It's interesting to see what has changed but also what has not changed in 25 years. And I can't think of a happier excuse to be back. All of us know how gratifying it is to see that our work is having impact, and that's what this award signi es. To win an award that carries Dijkstra's name is especially meaningful for me. As a graduate student, I read and reread Dijkstra's work; it changed the way I looked at systems research and the research enterprise. (Bowen will o er some remarks that expand on this theme.) I then had a chance to meet Dijkstra when I served as teaching assistant for a 1-week short course he taught in Santa Cruz. That was the summer following my rst year as an assistant professor at Cornell; my colleague David Gries had gotten me the assistantship. I guess I did OK, because Dijkstra and his wife Ria subsequently invited me to visit their home in Nuenen (The Netherlands) for a week. What a thrill. I subsequently saw Dijkstra at technical meetings and socially at least once a year, until he passed away. So, yes, I have many Dijkstra stories to tell. Catch me after dessert for those. You can read our paper \De ning Liveness" (it's only 5 pages!) if you are interested in the technical details. I thought that instead I would talk about how we developed those ideas and where things stand today. I'm always fascinated by the history behind discoveries, and I suspect that I'm not alone in enjoying this \academic gossip".

    The International Colloquium on Structural Information and Communication Complexity (SIROCCO) is devoted to the study of decentralized systems consisting of multiple communicating entities, with a special focus on better understanding how knowledge and communication a ect the feasibility and efficiency of solving tasks in such systems. The conference turned 25 this year, and I am proud to say that I share its birthplace: Ottawa, Canada (unfortunately, 11-year-old Avery did not have a paper to submit to the rst one). Another milestone is that this was the rst SIROCCO to be held in Israel. The venue: a kibbutz called Ma'ale HaHamisha perched high up in the Judean Hills near Jerusalem.

    Warmest thanks to Rafael Pass and Muthu Venkitasubramaniam for this issue's guest column, "Average-Case Complexity Through the Lens of Interactive Puzzles." When I mentioned to them that my introduction would have a section on Alan Selman's passing, they immediately wrote back that they were very sorry to hear of Alan's passing, and mentioned (as you will see discussed in the second page of their article), "The main problem that we are addressing actually goes back to a paper of Even, Selman, and Yacobi from 1984: "The Complexity of Promise Problems with Applications to Public-Key Cryptography'." It is beautiful, and a tribute to the lasting influence of Alan's research, that in the 2020s his work from many decades earlier is helping shape the field's dialogue.

    The conference was held from July 1st to July 4th at Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) in the heart of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, a historic city in Italy to the east of Rome. First Day On the rst day, a tutorial on Permissioned Blockchains took place. There, Roger Wattenhofer covered a variety of topics on permissioned and permissionless blockchains. The rst part started from the very basics, targeting an audience that has never heard of fault-tolerant distributed systems. In the second part, permissionless blockchains were explained, followed by the third and nal part, in which more advanced topics and current research were discussed. The 6-hour tutorial was well attended by researchers and students from various areas and the interactive format allowed the members of the audience to steer the talk into their preferred directions. In the evening, after the registration, the welcome reception with lots of delicious snacks and refreshing drinks took place.

    The 38th ACM SIGACT-SIGOPS Symposium on Principles of Distributed Computing (PODC 2019) was held on July 29-August 2, 2019 at the Double Tree Hilton hotel in Toronto, Canada. With three keynotes, over 40 accepted papers, over 20 accepted brief announcements, two workshops, and roughly 150 attendants, PODC 2019 constituted a composition of fascinating improvements in many areas of distributed and parallel computing. On the evening of the 31st of July, the conference banquet was held on a cruise over beautiful Lake Ontario and included the best papers award ceremony. The best paper award went to Yi-Jun Chang, and Thatchaphol Saranurak for their work titled, \Improved Distributed Expander Decomposition and Nearly Optimal Triangle Enumeration" [19]; two best student paper awards were given to Yi-Jun Chang, Manuela Fischer, and Yufan Zheng for their work titled, \The Complexity of (Δ + 1) Coloring in Congested Clique, Massively Parallel Computation, and Centralized Local Computation" [17] which was co-authored with Mohsen Gha ari, and Jara Uitto, and to Michal Dory and Dean Leitersdorf for the work on \Fast Approximate Shortest Paths in the Congested Clique" [16] which was co-authored with Keren Censor-Hillel, and Janne H. Korhonen. Congratulations to all the awardees and a special congratulations to Yi-Jun Chang for having received both awards! This review would be incomplete without mentioning perhaps one of the most notable results in the eld in recent years which was uploaded to the online archive just days before the conference gathered, and which was not presented at PODC 2019 but a ected many works presented at the conference: the work titled, ¶olylogarithmic-Time Deterministic Network Decomposition and Distributed Derandomization" [48] by Vaclav Rozhon, and Mohsen Gha ari. Throughout the entire conference there was talk regarding the implications of this work, culminating with perhaps one of the more memorable moments of PODC 2019, where Mohsen described this result during his talk on a di erent paper which he co-authored with Fabian Kuhn - Mohsen quoted from his and Kuhn's paper [31]: \we provide results that are in some sense the strongest that one can achieve, barring a major breakthrough", and on the next slide was that major breakthrough - a picture of Vaclav Rozhon along with the rst page of [48]. Congratulations to the authors on this work! We hope that this review will give readers the opportunity to experience some of PODC 2019 and potentially attend the conference in future years. Thank you to the organizers and authors for a captivating and though-provoking conference!

    It's great to be back at PODC. I attended this conference religiously through 1992. It's interesting to see what has changed but also what has not changed in 25 years. And I can't think of a happier excuse to be back. All of us know how gratifying it is to see that our work is having impact, and that's what this award signi es. To win an award that carries Dijkstra's name is especially meaningful for me. As a graduate student, I read and reread Dijkstra's work; it changed the way I looked at systems research and the research enterprise. (Bowen will o er some remarks that expand on this theme.) I then had a chance to meet Dijkstra when I served as teaching assistant for a 1-week short course he taught in Santa Cruz. That was the summer following my rst year as an assistant professor at Cornell; my colleague David Gries had gotten me the assistantship. I guess I did OK, because Dijkstra and his wife Ria subsequently invited me to visit their home in Nuenen (The Netherlands) for a week. What a thrill. I subsequently saw Dijkstra at technical meetings and socially at least once a year, until he passed away. So, yes, I have many Dijkstra stories to tell. Catch me after dessert for those. You can read our paper \De ning Liveness" (it's only 5 pages!) if you are interested in the technical details. I thought that instead I would talk about how we developed those ideas and where things stand today. I'm always fascinated by the history behind discoveries, and I suspect that I'm not alone in enjoying this \academic gossip".

    The International Colloquium on Structural Information and Communication Complexity (SIROCCO) is devoted to the study of decentralized systems consisting of multiple communicating entities, with a special focus on better understanding how knowledge and communication a ect the feasibility and efficiency of solving tasks in such systems. The conference turned 25 this year, and I am proud to say that I share its birthplace: Ottawa, Canada (unfortunately, 11-year-old Avery did not have a paper to submit to the rst one). Another milestone is that this was the rst SIROCCO to be held in Israel. The venue: a kibbutz called Ma'ale HaHamisha perched high up in the Judean Hills near Jerusalem.
