    Conventional studies on the satisfaction of museum visitors focus on collecting information through surveys to provide a one-way service to visitors, and thus it is impossible to obtain feedback on the real-time satisfaction of visitors who are experiencing the museum exhibition program. In addition, museum practitioners lack research on automated ways to evaluate a produced content program's lifecycle and its appropriateness. To overcome these problems, we propose a novel multi-convolutional neural network, called VimoNet, which is able to recognize visitors emotions automatically in real-time based on their facial expressions and body gestures. Furthermore, we design a user preference model of content and a framework to obtain feedback on content improvement for providing personalized digital cultural heritage content to visitors. Specifically, we define seven emotions of visitors and build a dataset of visitor facial expressions and gestures with respect to the emotions. Using the dataset, we proceed with feature fusion of face and gesture images trained on the DenseNet-201 and VGG-16 models for generating a combined emotion recognition model. From the results of the experiment, VimoNet achieved a classification accuracy of 84.10%, providing 7.60% and 14.31% improvement, respectively, over a single face and body gesture-based method of emotion classification performance. It is thus possible to automatically capture the emotions of museum visitors via VimoNet, and we confirm its feasibility through a case study with respect to digital content of cultural heritage.

    ABSTRACTAutogenic feedbacks can produce large‐scale, organized stratigraphic patterns in alluvial fans, but autogenic depositional signatures of specific upstream boundary conditions remain challenging to interpret. Here, a combination of theory, experiment and field application is used to explore how autogenic lithofacies changes can be interpreted as stratigraphic indicators of upstream boundary conditions. Six experiments were conducted to test the effects of sediment supply and water discharge rates on autogenic advance and retreat of the lithofacies boundary (grain‐size transition) in an alluvial fan with two dominant grain sizes. Migration of the grain‐size transition caused a short‐term zigzag pattern in the grain‐size transition position in the dip‐directional deposit section. For each experiment, time‐lapse images and laser topographic scans of the fan surface and stratigraphic cross‐sections of the final deposits were used to quantify characteristic timescales of autogenic processes. Timescales for fan‐margin migration, surface wet‐fraction change and grain‐size transition migration generally shorten as sediment supply rate increases and water discharge rate decreases. Increasing the sediment supply rate shortens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, producing higher frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge tends to widen channels and lengthens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, constructing lower frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge also enables more sediment to transport further downstream during release events, leading to higher magnitude zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. These relationships between upstream boundary conditions and the grain‐size transition trajectory demonstrate how autogenic stratigraphic signals could be used as a tool to infer relative changes in boundary conditions.

    This research investigates consumer reviews of eco-friendly products on Amazon to uncover valuable sustainability insights that can inform design optimization. Using natural language processing (NLP) techniques, including sentiment analysis, key terms extraction, and topic modeling, this research reveals diverse perspectives related to sustainability aspects in eco-friendly products. Innovatively, we integrate the NLP approach with correspondence analysis (CA) to understand consumer sentiments and preferences related to sustainability aspects. Leveraging CA, we visualize the interplay between eco-friendly product features and consumer sentiments, revealing underlying relationships and patterns. The CA biplot showcases the alignment of specific sustainability attributes with consumer satisfaction, highlighting which sustainability aspects hold greater influence over overall product ratings. As sustainability becomes an increasingly crucial aspect of consumer choices, our paper emphasizes the significance of a multidimensional approach that embraces both qualitative and quantitative insights. By blending CA with consumer reviews, we equip designers and stakeholders with an innovative and comprehensive toolkit to enhance sustainable design practices, paving the way for more informed and effective product development strategies in the realm of eco-friendliness.

    The article presents the formation problem of the early Koguryo state’s capital in the early medieval time. This subject has not been a particularly hot issue in Russian historiography. The main Korean and Chinese written and epigraphic sources were considered to resolve this background about the early capital. It categorically said, that in the 1st century BC, Koguryo developed as an established real state with an obligatory element as the capital. At the same time, information about the localization and structure of the early capital is uninformative and convoluted. Therefore, written sources were supplemented by archaeological data on the Wunu mountain city located in the Liaoning province, since in historiography, this site is correlated with the location of the first Koguryo capital. According to its characteristics, it represents a sparsely populated fortified settlement located in a hard-to-reach mountain valley on top of a high mountain. Different locations of the surrounding area are considered as the location of the valley settlement (including Xiàgǔchéngzi plain city). Several early Koguryo cemeteries were located in the neighbourhood. The Koguryo state system was finally organized only after several centuries, thus, the location indicated in written resources as the early capital, should be attributed as the leaders' military centre of the early Koguryo population group.

    Despite a few attempts to automatically crawl Ewe text from online news portals and magazines, the African Ewe language remains underdeveloped despite its rich morphology and complex "unique" structure. This is due to the poor quality, unbalanced, and religious-based nature of the crawled Ewe texts, thus making it challenging to preprocess and perform any NLP task with current transformer-based language models. In this study, we present a well-preprocessed Ewe dataset for low-resource text classification to the research community. Additionally, we have developed an Ewe-based word embedding to leverage the low-resource semantic representation. Finally, we have fine-tuned seven transformer-based models, namely BERT-based (cased and uncased), DistilBERT-based (cased and uncased), RoBERTa, DistilRoBERTa, and DeBERTa, using the preprocessed Ewe dataset that we have proposed. Extensive experiments indicate that the fine-tuned BERT-base-cased model outperforms all baseline models with an accuracy of 0.972, precision of 0.969, recall of 0.970, loss score of 0.021, and an F1-score of 0.970. This performance demonstrates the model’s ability to comprehend the low-resourced Ewe semantic representation compared to all other models, thus setting the fine-tuned BERT-based model as the benchmark for the proposed Ewe dataset.

    Open-domain question answering requires the task of retrieving documents with high relevance to the query from a large-scale corpus. Deep learning-based dense retrieval methods have become the primary approach for finding related documents. Although deep learning-based methods have improved search accuracy compared to traditional techniques, they simultaneously impose a considerable increase in computational burden. Consequently, research on efficient models and methods that optimize the trade-off between search accuracy and time to alleviate computational demands is required. In this paper, we propose a Korean document retrieval method utilizing ColBERT’s late interaction paradigm to efficiently calculate the relevance between questions and documents. For open-domain Korean question answering document retrieval, we construct a Korean dataset using various corpora from AI-Hub. We conduct experiments comparing the search accuracy and inference time among the traditional IR (information retrieval) model BM25, the dense retrieval approach utilizing BERT-based models for Korean, and our proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves a higher accuracy than BM25 and requires less search time than the dense retrieval method employing KoBERT. Moreover, the most outstanding performance is observed when using KoSBERT, a pre-trained Korean language model that learned to position semantically similar sentences closely in vector space.

    Abstract The record of past human adaptations provides crucial lessons for guiding responses to crises in the future. To date, there have been no systematic global comparisons of humans’ ability to absorb and recover from disturbances through time. We present results of the first attempt to synthesise resilience across a broad sample of prehistoric population time frequency data, spanning 30,000 years of human history. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of population decline show that frequent disturbances enhance a population’s capacity to resist and recover from later downturns. Land use patterns are important mediators of the strength of this positive association: farming and herding societies are more vulnerable but also more resilient overall. The results show that important trade-offs exist when adopting novel or alternate land use strategies.

    Conventional studies on the satisfaction of museum visitors focus on collecting information through surveys to provide a one-way service to visitors, and thus it is impossible to obtain feedback on the real-time satisfaction of visitors who are experiencing the museum exhibition program. In addition, museum practitioners lack research on automated ways to evaluate a produced content program's lifecycle and its appropriateness. To overcome these problems, we propose a novel multi-convolutional neural network, called VimoNet, which is able to recognize visitors emotions automatically in real-time based on their facial expressions and body gestures. Furthermore, we design a user preference model of content and a framework to obtain feedback on content improvement for providing personalized digital cultural heritage content to visitors. Specifically, we define seven emotions of visitors and build a dataset of visitor facial expressions and gestures with respect to the emotions. Using the dataset, we proceed with feature fusion of face and gesture images trained on the DenseNet-201 and VGG-16 models for generating a combined emotion recognition model. From the results of the experiment, VimoNet achieved a classification accuracy of 84.10%, providing 7.60% and 14.31% improvement, respectively, over a single face and body gesture-based method of emotion classification performance. It is thus possible to automatically capture the emotions of museum visitors via VimoNet, and we confirm its feasibility through a case study with respect to digital content of cultural heritage.

    ABSTRACTAutogenic feedbacks can produce large‐scale, organized stratigraphic patterns in alluvial fans, but autogenic depositional signatures of specific upstream boundary conditions remain challenging to interpret. Here, a combination of theory, experiment and field application is used to explore how autogenic lithofacies changes can be interpreted as stratigraphic indicators of upstream boundary conditions. Six experiments were conducted to test the effects of sediment supply and water discharge rates on autogenic advance and retreat of the lithofacies boundary (grain‐size transition) in an alluvial fan with two dominant grain sizes. Migration of the grain‐size transition caused a short‐term zigzag pattern in the grain‐size transition position in the dip‐directional deposit section. For each experiment, time‐lapse images and laser topographic scans of the fan surface and stratigraphic cross‐sections of the final deposits were used to quantify characteristic timescales of autogenic processes. Timescales for fan‐margin migration, surface wet‐fraction change and grain‐size transition migration generally shorten as sediment supply rate increases and water discharge rate decreases. Increasing the sediment supply rate shortens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, producing higher frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge tends to widen channels and lengthens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, constructing lower frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge also enables more sediment to transport further downstream during release events, leading to higher magnitude zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. These relationships between upstream boundary conditions and the grain‐size transition trajectory demonstrate how autogenic stratigraphic signals could be used as a tool to infer relative changes in boundary conditions.

    This research investigates consumer reviews of eco-friendly products on Amazon to uncover valuable sustainability insights that can inform design optimization. Using natural language processing (NLP) techniques, including sentiment analysis, key terms extraction, and topic modeling, this research reveals diverse perspectives related to sustainability aspects in eco-friendly products. Innovatively, we integrate the NLP approach with correspondence analysis (CA) to understand consumer sentiments and preferences related to sustainability aspects. Leveraging CA, we visualize the interplay between eco-friendly product features and consumer sentiments, revealing underlying relationships and patterns. The CA biplot showcases the alignment of specific sustainability attributes with consumer satisfaction, highlighting which sustainability aspects hold greater influence over overall product ratings. As sustainability becomes an increasingly crucial aspect of consumer choices, our paper emphasizes the significance of a multidimensional approach that embraces both qualitative and quantitative insights. By blending CA with consumer reviews, we equip designers and stakeholders with an innovative and comprehensive toolkit to enhance sustainable design practices, paving the way for more informed and effective product development strategies in the realm of eco-friendliness.

    The article presents the formation problem of the early Koguryo state’s capital in the early medieval time. This subject has not been a particularly hot issue in Russian historiography. The main Korean and Chinese written and epigraphic sources were considered to resolve this background about the early capital. It categorically said, that in the 1st century BC, Koguryo developed as an established real state with an obligatory element as the capital. At the same time, information about the localization and structure of the early capital is uninformative and convoluted. Therefore, written sources were supplemented by archaeological data on the Wunu mountain city located in the Liaoning province, since in historiography, this site is correlated with the location of the first Koguryo capital. According to its characteristics, it represents a sparsely populated fortified settlement located in a hard-to-reach mountain valley on top of a high mountain. Different locations of the surrounding area are considered as the location of the valley settlement (including Xiàgǔchéngzi plain city). Several early Koguryo cemeteries were located in the neighbourhood. The Koguryo state system was finally organized only after several centuries, thus, the location indicated in written resources as the early capital, should be attributed as the leaders' military centre of the early Koguryo population group.

    Despite a few attempts to automatically crawl Ewe text from online news portals and magazines, the African Ewe language remains underdeveloped despite its rich morphology and complex "unique" structure. This is due to the poor quality, unbalanced, and religious-based nature of the crawled Ewe texts, thus making it challenging to preprocess and perform any NLP task with current transformer-based language models. In this study, we present a well-preprocessed Ewe dataset for low-resource text classification to the research community. Additionally, we have developed an Ewe-based word embedding to leverage the low-resource semantic representation. Finally, we have fine-tuned seven transformer-based models, namely BERT-based (cased and uncased), DistilBERT-based (cased and uncased), RoBERTa, DistilRoBERTa, and DeBERTa, using the preprocessed Ewe dataset that we have proposed. Extensive experiments indicate that the fine-tuned BERT-base-cased model outperforms all baseline models with an accuracy of 0.972, precision of 0.969, recall of 0.970, loss score of 0.021, and an F1-score of 0.970. This performance demonstrates the model’s ability to comprehend the low-resourced Ewe semantic representation compared to all other models, thus setting the fine-tuned BERT-based model as the benchmark for the proposed Ewe dataset.

    Open-domain question answering requires the task of retrieving documents with high relevance to the query from a large-scale corpus. Deep learning-based dense retrieval methods have become the primary approach for finding related documents. Although deep learning-based methods have improved search accuracy compared to traditional techniques, they simultaneously impose a considerable increase in computational burden. Consequently, research on efficient models and methods that optimize the trade-off between search accuracy and time to alleviate computational demands is required. In this paper, we propose a Korean document retrieval method utilizing ColBERT’s late interaction paradigm to efficiently calculate the relevance between questions and documents. For open-domain Korean question answering document retrieval, we construct a Korean dataset using various corpora from AI-Hub. We conduct experiments comparing the search accuracy and inference time among the traditional IR (information retrieval) model BM25, the dense retrieval approach utilizing BERT-based models for Korean, and our proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves a higher accuracy than BM25 and requires less search time than the dense retrieval method employing KoBERT. Moreover, the most outstanding performance is observed when using KoSBERT, a pre-trained Korean language model that learned to position semantically similar sentences closely in vector space.

    Abstract The record of past human adaptations provides crucial lessons for guiding responses to crises in the future. To date, there have been no systematic global comparisons of humans’ ability to absorb and recover from disturbances through time. We present results of the first attempt to synthesise resilience across a broad sample of prehistoric population time frequency data, spanning 30,000 years of human history. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of population decline show that frequent disturbances enhance a population’s capacity to resist and recover from later downturns. Land use patterns are important mediators of the strength of this positive association: farming and herding societies are more vulnerable but also more resilient overall. The results show that important trade-offs exist when adopting novel or alternate land use strategies.
