    Outdoor stone sculptures are prone to accelerated deterioration caused by the proliferation of microorganisms in the stone. The physical, chemical and mechanical action of microorganisms on stone heritage causes aesthetic and structural changes that devalue the artworks over time. Developing more sustainable and ecological alternatives for their preventive conservation is necessary to reduce the negative environmental and human health impacts of currently used toxic biocides. Chitosan-based coatings cross-linked with citric acid and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) were developed for application to stone sculptures, as antimicrobial protection to inhibit the growth of degrading microorganisms. After polymerisation of the formulations, the resulting films were only partially soluble while remaining permeable to water vapour. These characteristics offer the possibility to reverse the conservation treatments, or to re-treat in regular periods, as part of programmed conservation strategies. Bacteria and fungi commonly found in stone microbiomes that contribute to biodeterioration processes were inhibited, particularly the pigment-producing yeast Rhodotorula spp., which causes discolouration of stone surfaces. The most interesting coating was successfully tested on granite, limestone and marble samples, and its presence on the stones' surfaces was confirmed by FTIR and SEM analyses. The chitosan-based coating caused no visible colour changes to the stones and reduced the wettability of granite and limestone, thus representing a potential antimicrobial protective layer for stone cultural heritage.

    Authors: Relvas, Maria de Jesus; Oliveira, Susana;

    O estudo de corpora de eras antigas tem sempre envolvido processos complexos, essencialmente no que respeita a acesso e manuseamento. Os repositórios digitais estão a eliminar obstáculos e a gerar um novo modo de relação entre as obras e os que com elas lidam, académicos ou não: podemos agora visitar bibliotecas e museus a partir dos nossos computadores, aceder a coleções privadas e, inclusive, descobrir pormenores em textos e pinturas que, de outro modo, não conseguiríamos captar.As Humanidades Digitais constituem um campo vasto e complexo, com um desenvolvimento assinalável nos últimos anos, no seio da conjuntura ampla da computação e das tecnologias digitais. Não nos focaremos na sua definição, nem na reflexão teórica em curso, mas antes nas características mais significativas das Humanidades Digitais – a sua transversalidade e as suas potencialidades. Num primeiro momento, apresentaremos uma compilação de repositórios digitais que consideramos relevantes para os Estudos Early Modern; num segundo momento, exploraremos dois deles, as suas características e as suas mais-valias como ferramentas digitais usadas para expandir a nossa capacidade de estudar e desenvolver investigação nas Artes e Humanidades, especificamente as do período Early Modern: Primary Sources – Early Modern Resources; The Newberry – Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Studies. The study of corpora of ancient eras has always involved complex processes, essentially regarding access and handling. The digital repositories are erasing obstacles and generating a new kind of relationship between the works and the ones who deal with them, scholars or not: we can now visit libraries and museums from our computers, peruse private collections, and even spot details in texts and paintings that would otherwise remain hidden to the eye.Digital Humanities constitutes a vast, complex field which has had a remarkable development in the last years, within the broad conjuncture of computing and digital technologies. We will not focus on its definition, or on the theoretical reflection that is being produced, but rather on the most significant characteristics of Digital Humanities – its transversality and its potentialities. In a first moment, we will present a compilation of digital repositories that we consider relevant to Early Modern Studies; in a second moment, we will survey two of them, their characteristics and assets as digital tools used to expand our ability to study and undertake research in the Arts and Humanities, specifically in Early Modern Times: Primary Sources – Early Modern Resources; The Newberry – Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Studies. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

    Authors: Martinho, Alexandra Maria Meyers;

    O presente trabalho procura apresentar uma análise sobre a presença/influência portuguesa no Sudeste Asiático, sob os olhares dos Portugueses Tomé Pires, Gaspar Correia e Fernão Mendes Pinto no século XVI. Alguns dos caminhos em análise serão Malaca (Malásia), o Reino do Sião (Tailândia) e as ilhas das Molucas (Indonésia). Para tal, foram estudadas três obras de portugueses, que narram os feitos dos portugueses no Sudeste Asiático do século XVI. Toda a informação obtida, ajudará na reflexão e realização da temática em questão. Além disso, realizou-se uma investigação histórica à cidade de Ayutthaya (Tailândia), que, ainda hoje, apresenta vestígios de influência portuguesa desde o século XVI. The purpose of this research paper is to a study the Portuguese presence/influence in Southeast Asia, told by three Portuguese, Tomé Pires, Gaspar Correia and Fernão Mendes Pinto in the sixteenth century. Some of the places to be explored in this study, include Mallaca (Malaysia), Siam (Thailand) and the Moluccas (Indonesia). Three books from the abovementioned chroniclers were analysed to recount true events witnessed by them in Southeast Asian territories during the sixteenth century. All the gathered information will help to conduct this research, as well as an investigation to Ayutthaya (Thailand), a city that still exhibits significant Portuguese influence since the sixteenth century.

    Authors: Oliveira, Armando Leal de;

    Os e-Sports com as diferentes modalidades (MOBA, FPS, RPG entre outras), são os desportos do novo século e quiçá do novo milénio. Muito evoluiu, desde o primeiro jogo Tennis for Two, realizado no Brookhaven National Laboratory em 1958 até aos atuais Campeonatos de League of Legends, por exemplo. Inicialmente os jogos serviram como entretenimento, sucedendo posteriormente competições amadoras e, tornando-se mais tarde em competições profissionais. Toda esta evolução fez com que os e-Sports tal como noutros desportos profissionais se tornassem num negócio, onde entram organizações que realizam eventos, clubes, atletas, patrocinadores, equipamentos e sem esquecer os media e o setor das apostas desportivas, todos eles ligados aos e-Sports. Em Portugal, tem havido um crescimento deste desporto eletrónico tal como a nível internacional e, portanto, este trabalho tem a função de caracterizar Portugal em matéria de negócio e confrontar com a Europa (Hungria e Polónia) e o resto do mundo (Coreia do Sul), tendo para isso realizado a revisão da literatura de diversos autores; estudo através de um Modelo de Negócio; consulta de legislação e o enquadramento institucional. O negócio dos e-Sports em Portugal está em franca expansão e com sucesso, mas tal como internacionalmente, existem falhas legislativas que urge retificar. E-Sports with different modalities (MOBA, FPS, RPG among others), are the sports of the new century and perhaps the new millennium. Much has evolved, from the first Tennis for Two game, held at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958, to the current League of Legends Championships, for example. Initially the games served as entertainment, later succeeding amateur competitions and later becoming professional competitions. All this evolution has made e-Sports, as in other professional sports, become a business, where organizations that hold events, clubs, athletes, sponsors, equipment and without forgetting the media and the sports betting sector, all of them linked to the e-Sports. In Portugal, there has been a growth of this electronic sport as well as internationally and, therefore, this work has the function of characterizing Portugal in terms of business and comparing it with Europe (Hungary and Poland) and the rest of the world (South Korea), having carried out a review of the literature of several authors; study through a Business Model; consultation of legislation and the institutional framework. The e-Sports business in Portugal is booming and successfully, but as internationally, there are legislative flaws that need to be rectified.

    Authors: Sampaio, Sofia;

    The article analyses Silvino Santos’s Filmogramas, a collection of hitherto neglected domestic films the Portuguese-Brazilian filmmaker (1886-1970) made in the late 1920s while accompanying his employer’s family, the Araújos, in Portugal. Combining archival research, interviews, and film analysis, I reconnect the Amazonian and European experiences of (colonial) conquest and domesticity that Santos’s life trajectory and film production depict and embody. The aim is to move beyond regional and hagiographic historiographies and build a more critical and anthropologically informed entangled history of a figure and an epochal milieu that continue to permeate and shape contemporary understandings of the past.

    Authors: Luís Gonçalves Ferreira;

    Mastering a colour—as such, its ‘domestication’—involves a weft of technological and symbolic relationships encompassed in the human ability to reproduce a visible colour using the techniques of textile dyeing. The Regimento dos panos or Regimento dos trapeiros (‘regulation of fabrics’ or ‘regulation of drapers’), published in 1573 and expanded in 1690, is a document made up of 107 chapters aiming to standardise the various stages of the production chain of woollen goods in Portugal. In the sections relating to the finishing of fabrics, the regulation carefully details the dyeing of the colour black. The main aim of this text is to discuss the four recipes presented in that document. The system presupposed a phase exogenous to the rules, since the fabrics had to be previously dyed blue (‘celestial blues’) by means of successive immersions of the cloth in a vat with indigo. The dyeing itself was achieved by mixing mordants and auxiliaries (alum, tartar, iron sulphate, and tannins) with a red dye (madder). The main conclusion is that the formulae presented do not constitute, in their general principles, a characteristic Portuguese methodology. In addition, the article includes an inventory of the raw materials used for dyeing in the Early Modern Age, produced, through a qualitative method, through cross-reference with other manuscript and printed sources, as well as an interpretation of their social and economic importance, and a systematisation of the types of Portuguese wools. This text was written within the scope of the doctoral research ‘Pobres, doentes e esfarrapados? Indumentária de pobres no contexto assistencial urbano de Porto e Lisbon (séculos XVII–XVIII)’ funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (ref. 2020.04746.BD). This work received support from PT national funds (FCT/MCTES, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia and Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior) through the project REVIVE (ref. 2022.01243; https://doi.org/10.54499/2022.01243.PTDC, accessed on 5 January 2023).

    A proposta desta dissertação passa por realizar um estudo de caso sobre o Museu da Cidade do Porto, atualmente denominado Museu do Porto. Desde 2022, este tem vindo a ser reestruturado sob a orientação do Doutor Jorge Sobrado. Alteram-se os espaços e dinamizaram-se os mesmos, instaurando um novo e importante núcleo – a Alfândega do Porto. A ideia inicial da construção do Museu da Cidade surgiu na década de 1990, quando Manuela de Melo, vereadora da Câmara Municipal do Porto, procurava preencher uma lacuna nas infraestruturas museológicas da cidade. Nos anos posteriores existiram várias abordagens, contudo, só em 2002 é que se deu a inauguração, tendo-se optado pela criação de vários núcleos temáticos, isto é, um Museu da Cidade descentralizado. Os núcleos que constituíam o Museu inicialmente eram o Arqueossítio da Rua de D. Hugo, a Casa do Infante, o Gabinete de Numismática, o Museu do Vinho do Porto e o Museu Romântico da Quinta da Macieirinha. Em 2016, decidiu-se juntar a Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro e a Casa Marta Ortigão Sampaio, bem como os Caminhos do Romântico. Em 2019, o conceito do Museu da Cidade alterou-se por completo, tendo sido criado um museu enucleado que se espalhava capilarmente pelas ruas da cidade, reunindo 17 estações museológicas, divididas em 5 principais eixos, com diferentes temáticas. Esta dissertação está então direcionada para o conhecimento dos antecedentes do Museu da Cidade, para a sua nova museologia e para tudo o que esta engloba, constituindo assim um estudo de caso sobre o mesmo. The purpose of this dissertation is to conduct a case study of the Porto City Museum, currently named the Porto Museum. Since 2022, it has been restructured under the guidance of Dr. Jorge Sobrado. The spaces have been changed and dynamized, introducing an important new core – the Porto customs house. The original idea for the construction of the City Museum came about in the 1990s, when Manuela de Melo, a council member of Porto City Hall, was looking to fill a gap in the city's museum infrastructure. There were various approaches in the years that followed, but it wasn't until 2002 that the inauguration took place, when the decision was made to create various thematic centers, in other words, a decentralized City Museum. The museum's initial centers were the Rua de D. Hugo Archaeological Site, the Casa do Infante, the Numismatics Office, the Port Wine Museum and the Quinta da Macieirinha Romantic Museum. In 2016, it was decided to add the Guerra Junqueiro House Museum and the Marta Ortigão Sampaio House-Museum, as well as the Romantic Paths. In 2019, the concept of the City Museum changed completely, creating an enucleated museum that spread capillary-like through the streets of the city, bringing together 17 museum stations, divided into 5 main axes, with different themes. This dissertation is therefore aimed towards understanding the background of the City Museum and its new museology and all that it encompasses, thus constituting a case study regarding it. Depression is a global health concern with severe consequences for individuals, making its recognition and understanding crucial. Recently, there has been a growing interest in utilizing social media platforms as valuable sources of information to gain insights into individuals’ experiences with depression. Analyzing textual data from diverse user populations enables the identification of common symptoms, triggers, coping mechanisms, and potential warning signs. Researchers have developed algorithms and machine learning models to automate the detection of depressive symptoms in text, facilitating more efficient screening and early intervention. This paper describes the participation of team NailP in the CLEF eRisk 2023 task 1, which focuses on ranking sentences from user writings based on their relevance to symptoms of depression. The goal is to evaluate the sentences and determine their level of relevance to each symptom outlined in the Beck Depression Questionnaire-II. Such participation contributes to the development of effective methods and tools for identifying and predicting potential risks and dangers associated with depression in online environments. Natural cement, also known as “Roman cement”, was used across Europe during a historic period, mainly in many building facades, due to its hydraulic properties and aesthetic qualities. In Portugal, the use of natural cement occurred in buildings from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, a period during which the use of lime binders decreased and before the massive use of Portland cement. Recent conservation and rehabilitation actions resulting from necessary interventions in heritage buildings from this period have played an important role in revealing evidence of the use of natural cement and clarifying the lacunae of information about this material. Due to the inadequate use of reparation materials in previous conservation and rehabilitation interventions, this study summarizes the historical production, study, and use of natural cement in Portugal. Natural cement results from the calcination of clay-rich limestone (marlstone) without any compositional changes after extraction, distinguishing itself from hydraulic lime due to its higher clay content and allowing for the formation of higher quantities of hydraulic reactive phases without free lime. Although this topic has been approached at a European level, mainly focusing on the production and use of natural cement in Central Europe, in Portugal, it is still necessary to produce and disseminate information on this specific subject. Therefore, this study focuses on the evolution of cement production in Portugal and an analysis of the existing knowledge of the binders used in architectural heritage based on the scientific and historical bibliography.

    Authors: Martinho, Alexandra Maria Meyers;

    Authors: Sampaio, Sofia;

    Authors: Luís Gonçalves Ferreira;

    Authors: Teixeira, Mariana Cristina da Silva;

The authors thank CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, and CEFET/RJ for partially funding this research. The authors are grateful to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) for financial support through national funds FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) to CeDRI (UIDB/05757/2020 and UIDP/05757/2020) and SusTEC (LA/P/0007/2021). info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

    Interview with José Bogalheiro that seeks to shed light on the personal and professional journey of a major Portuguese figure who dedicated almost half a century to thinking about and teaching cinema in Portugal. Subsidiarily, this interview also reflects on the main theoretical and conceptual lines that have defined the pedagogical proposal of the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (ESTC), as well as the tensions inherent in artistic teaching from a historical and transversal point of view. Entrevista a José Bogalheiro que procura compreender melhor o percurso pessoal e profissional de quase meio século de uma das principais figuras dedicadas ao pensamento e ensino do cinema em Portugal. Subsidiariamente, refletimos também acerca das principais linhas teóricas e conceptuais que definem a proposta pedagógica da Escola Superior de Teatro de Cinema (ESTC), bem como as tensões inerentes ao ensino artístico de um ponto de vista não apenas histórico, mas também transversal.
