    Background: In terms of death rates, occurrence, costs, and prevalence, respiratory tract diseases, which include minor issues like the common cold and life-threatening ones like bacterial pneumonia, lung cancers, and tuberculosis, are extremely significant. People have been worried about their health for a long time because of respiratory diseases. Old-style medication has tended to these diseases; however, the accumulation of information produced by elective methodologies, among which medication assumes a significant role, is insignificant. Phytotherapy has consistently given proficient solutions for constant and moderate wellbeing inconveniences and, occasionally, for intense and serious problems. Alleviating the aggravated nasal sections and aviation routes was a shared need in antiquated societies. In this study, we conducted a systematic literature review to gain evidence about herbal products and their phytoconstituents that play a role in respiratory illness. We also predicted the physicochemical properties of various phytoconstituents from therapeutic plants employed to cure respiratory ailments (such as asthma, COPD, cough, tuberculosis, etc.). Objectives: The main objective of this critical study is to explore phytotherapy-based molecules for respiratory illnesses. The physicochemical properties of already isolated compounds have been evaluated to screen for the drug-like behavior of phytoconstituents. Methodology: A wide variety of literature has been collected from PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, and other scientific databases. After an exhaustive review, the chemical structures of phytoconstituents responsible for curing respiratory illness were sketched in ChemDraw Ultra 8.0, and these structures have been taken for further analysis of the physicochemical properties of these phytoconstituents. The crucial parameters of phytoconstituents' physicochemical properties were analyzed using the pkCSM webserver. Result: The results suggest that a variety of phytoconstituents have the potential to treat respiratory illnesses, and the physicochemical parameters reveal that 65 compounds out of 130 screened compounds exhibit Lipinski's rule of five and Veber's rule, while others don't obey these rules. Compounds with optimal physicochemical properties could be promising candidates for emerging respiratory illness treatments. Conclusion: This critical review highlights the possible therapeutic potential of plant-based medicine to cure respiratory illnesses. The finding shows that a wide range of alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, and flavonoids isolated from different herbs may be able to treat respiratory problems. More research is needed to find out the IC50 and MIC values of these compounds against respiratory pathogens like S. pneumoniae and M. tuberculosis.

    Nowadays, technology plays an important role in supporting museum visits and enhancing overall museum visit experiences. An increasing number of studies have evaluated the potential of digitally mediated cultural heritage experiences. However, there is still a lack of a deeper understanding of how mediation devices influence the museum visit experiences and visitors’ behaviours. This article focuses on the mediating role of digital screens in the museum space, examining visitors’ activity and experience through their encounters with touchscreens at the Frederic Chopin's Museum in Warsaw, Poland. This article presents and makes use of a recent approach in the philosophy of technology, initiated by the American philosopher Don Ihde, called postphenomenology, as well as the theory of affordances. By conducting observations and interviews with museum visitors, the study shows that touchscreens, and digital technologies themselves, are not only functional but also shape the visitor's perception and expectations. This study shows that touchscreens are an embodiment technique and play a role of the touch-substitute for museum visitors.

    Authors: Piotr Perkowski;

    In 1971, Polish policymakers embarked on a quest to modernize the socialist economy. The paper explores the influence of the Japanese economic system on Polish press coverage and expert recommendations. It argues that the discourse surrounding Japan reflects a consistent advocacy for market-oriented policies in late socialism. This phenomenon is evident through diverse initiatives, including the pursuit of foreign currency, as well as restructuring in labor, management and state planning. The analysis compares the recommendations related to the Japanese system with the eventual implementation of export-oriented, broad industrialization financed through foreign debt and reliant on inexpensive labor. Exogenous and endogenous factors presented challenges for exports, with the technology gap emerging as a pivotal issue. While recognizing the hybrid nature of Japanese state-socialism-like capitalism, experts overlooked crucial elements, including selective financing of industrialization, the role of entrepreneurship in long-term planning, and investments facilitated by a forceful banking sector. Journalists and experts cited Japan’s ‘traditional’ thriftiness as a rationale for preserving surplus-generating inexpensive labor. Despite the distorted image of the Japanese alternative, it contributed to the domestication of market socialism in Poland, reinforced concepts of flexibility and convergence, and played a vital role in the Polish discourse on economic reform.     Authors: Maria Kobielska; Kinga Siewior;

    Whilst Poland appears today as a paradigmatic example of a homogeneous, exclusive national and cultural identity, reinforced by the hegemonic historical policy of a semi-authoritarian state, it is also challenged by Polish minority histories (civilian, multi-ethnic, non-Catholic, women). The main concern of the present article is the plural ‘Polishness’ that emerges from the constellation of these non-default histories. To examine the frictions of historical narratives in action, authors use spaces of historical museums as a field of observation, perceiving them as memory agents fostering not only confrontational but also negotiative memory politics. To identify situations in which tensions between the ‘central’ Polishness and its unorthodox variants are particularly evident, the paper takes a look at ‘non-central’ Polish territories i.e. ‘post-German’ areas, characterized by a complex heterogeneous past in which Germanness and Polishness, but also ‘Silesianness’ or ‘Borderlandness’ mutually clash and dialogue. Analysis of selected exhibitions’ construction reveals peculiarities of different local contexts in transitional spaces and strategies of resolving creeping conflicts between ‘the Polishness’ and plural, peripheral ‘Polishnesses’. As authors argue, these case studies – instead of a static model of open memory conflict and binaries – offer dynamic models of memory, and allow to introduce the concept of memory frictions.

    This article focuses on the first historical museum in Serbia, established in Sombor in 2019 (the Museum of the Danube Swabians), with an exhibition devoted to the presence of Germans in Vojvodina. The artefacts presented at the exhibition, left behind by the Germans who used to live in Vojvodina, have been recognised as part of Serbia’s difficult heritage (the term coined by Sharon Macdonald). The article analyses the permanent exhibition and the museum’s efforts to involve the local residents in creating said exhibition. The article also asks whether the museum in Sombor can shape the collective identity of Serbs and undermine its ethno-nationalist character.

    AbstractMechanical properties—modulus of elasticity and strain at break, water vapour sorption, and hygroscopic expansion of selected egg tempera and distemper paints were determined as a function of relative humidity (RH) filling in this way a critical gap in the knowledge required for the analysis of fracturing processes in paintings. The experimental work was made possible by the preparation of several tempera paints, mimicking the historical materials, in the form of large specimens. Lead white, azurite, and yellow ochre were selected as pigments, and egg yolk and rabbit skin glue as binding media. The water vapour sorption and the moisture-related swelling of the paints were dominated by the proteinaceous components of the binders. The linear hygroscopic expansion coefficient of the dried egg yolk binder was approximately 1 × 10−4 per 1% RH, several times less than the coefficient of the collagen glue (4 × 10−4 per 1% RH). The moduli of elasticity of egg tempera paints at the RH mid-range were comparable to the moduli of aged oil paints, whilst the modulus of elasticity of the distemper paint was close to values measured for animal glue-based grounds. The paints experienced the transition from brittle to ductile states on increasing RH. The egg tempera paints were found to be more brittle than the distemper paint, gessoes, and, generally, aged oil paints. The observations modify a frequently used laminar model of panel paintings in which the mismatch in the response of glue-based ground layer and wood substrate to variations in RH has been identified as the worst-case condition for the fracturing of the entire pictorial layer. This study demonstrated that tempera could be more brittle than the ground layer and in consequence more vulnerable to cracking.

    The essay investigates the notion of queer heritage with regard to Central Europe and identifies a number of challenges related to the process of researching queer art history and heritage in Central Europe. Having addressed the status of largely “queer-philic” Western historiography, the paper offers a brief discussion of the Józef Czapski Pavilion in Krakow which is seen as an illustration of the problematic condition of queer heritage in Central Europe. Finally, by bringing the example of the 2017 show Dziedzictwo (Heritage), the essay attempts to offer the region-specific definition of queer heritage.

    Authors: Piotr Perkowski;

    In 1971, Polish policymakers embarked on a quest to modernize the socialist economy. The paper explores the influence of the Japanese economic system on Polish press coverage and expert recommendations. It argues that the discourse surrounding Japan reflects a consistent advocacy for market-oriented policies in late socialism. This phenomenon is evident through diverse initiatives, including the pursuit of foreign currency, as well as restructuring in labor, management and state planning. The analysis compares the recommendations related to the Japanese system with the eventual implementation of export-oriented, broad industrialization financed through foreign debt and reliant on inexpensive labor. Exogenous and endogenous factors presented challenges for exports, with the technology gap emerging as a pivotal issue. While recognizing the hybrid nature of Japanese state-socialism-like capitalism, experts overlooked crucial elements, including selective financing of industrialization, the role of entrepreneurship in long-term planning, and investments facilitated by a forceful banking sector. Journalists and experts cited Japan’s ‘traditional’ thriftiness as a rationale for preserving surplus-generating inexpensive labor. Despite the distorted image of the Japanese alternative, it contributed to the domestication of market socialism in Poland, reinforced concepts of flexibility and convergence, and played a vital role in the Polish discourse on economic reform.     Authors: Maria Kobielska; Kinga Siewior;

    Authors: Robert Kusek; Wojciech Szymański;
