description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2024Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Schiele, Philipp; Luxenberg, Eric; Boyd, Stephen;Schiele, Philipp; Luxenberg, Eric; Boyd, Stephen; We consider convex-concave saddle point problems, and more generally convex optimization problems we refer to as $\textit{saddle problems}$, which include the partial supremum or infimum of convex-concave saddle functions. Saddle problems arise in a wide range of applications, including game theory, machine learning, and finance. It is well known that a saddle problem can be reduced to a single convex optimization problem by dualizing either the convex (min) or concave (max) objectives, reducing a min-max problem into a min-min (or max-max) problem. Carrying out this conversion by hand can be tedious and error prone. In this paper we introduce $\textit{disciplined saddle programming}$ (DSP), a domain specific language (DSL) for specifying saddle problems, for which the dualizing trick can be automated. The language and methods are based on recent work by Juditsky and Nemirovski arXiv:2102.01002 [math.OC], who developed the idea of conic-representable saddle point programs, and showed how to carry out the required dualization automatically using conic duality. Juditsky and Nemirovski's conic representation of saddle problems extends Nesterov and Nemirovski's earlier development of conic representable convex problems; DSP can be thought of as extending disciplined convex programming (DCP) to saddle problems. Just as DCP makes it easy for users to formulate and solve complex convex problems, DSP allows users to easily formulate and solve saddle problems. Our method is implemented in an open-source package, also called DSP.

The fact that women are the most vulnerable in times of war earns them the right to be included in counter-insurgency management and the post-conflict peace process. In North-eastern Nigeria, women suffer from Boko-haram insurgencies and despicable acts, including forced marriages, rapes, displacement, destruction of livelihood and widowed. The study argues that by domesticating the UNSCR1325, the strategies for mitigating the human suffering inflicted on the people by the insurgency would be sufficiently engendered to address the needs of women who are mostly impacted by the insurgencies as mothers, wives’ sisters and daughters.

This is reflected primarily through the series of Directives the EU has enacted along the years, but is most precisely conveyed in the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). As part of the European Union, Lithuania has enacted its own long-term strategy aimed at transforming the current building stock in one which is more energy efficient. Building energy certification, legalized in accordance with the requirements of the directive is the primary tool used to evaluate the energy-efficiency of a building, which includes determination of the energy consumption of a building and subsequently assigning it with an energy performance class. Energy performance certificates (EPC) are obligatory for new and existing buildings in all European Union (EU) member states and provide not only a description of the energy performance characteristics of individual buildings, but are also useful source of legal information for determination of the achievements of building energy efficiency improvement strategy. Despite the current wide spread presence of EPC analyses in other European countries, similar information on the national EPC register of Lithuania is still hardly present in research studies. To this effect this paper presents a detailed overview of the stock of Lithuanian residential 1-2 apartments buildings using data from the national EPC register. The results obtained present the impact of the implementation of EPBD on Lithuanian residential 1-2 apartments buildings, including changes in thermal insulation of building elements, heating system typology, energy consumption and CO2 emissions. peer-reviewed

This paper attempts to fill that lacuna: drawing on ideas from cognitive science, I introduce a framework for evaluating the representational claims made about components of neural NLP models, proposing three criteria with which to evaluate whether a component of a model represents a property and operationalising these criteria using probing classifiers, a popular analysis technique in NLP (and deep learning more broadly). The project of operationalising a philosophically-informed notion of representation should be of interest to both philosophers of science and NLP practitioners. It affords philosophers a novel testing-ground for claims about the nature of representation, and helps NLPers organise the large literature on probing experiments, suggesting novel avenues for empirical research. Underwater archaeological excavations present unique challenges, particularly when conducted at significant depths where divers face limited time on the archaeological site. Traditional methods of recording excavation progress, such as manual documentation and drawings, are too time-consuming when the time on the site totals no more than 12 min. To address these limitations, this paper introduces an innovative approach for daily recording and observation of underwater archaeological excavations using 3D photogrammetric models and point of view (PoV) cameras developed specifically for the excavation of a shipwreck situated at a depth of 110 m. The proposed system leverages advancements in photogrammetry and 3D modelling techniques to capture and analyse detailed visual data of the excavation site on a daily basis. Three-dimensional photogrammetric models offer a comprehensive and easily accessible representation of the excavation site, enabling the team to record and analyse excavation levels and features in a highly precise and detailed manner. By comparing the 3D models captured on consecutive days, researchers can precisely measure changes in the excavation area, identify new artifacts or structures, and record the progress of the excavation. The PoV cameras contribute to the planning of daily tasks required on the site. Overall, this paper showcases innovative methods for underwater archaeological excavations at significant depths, employing 3D photogrammetric models for daily recording as well as PoV cameras for observation. The proposed system represents a substantial advancement in the field of underwater archaeology, offering a more accurate, efficient, and reliable approach to documenting and analysing excavation progress, whilst also producing results that can be subsequently adapted and applied to other deep water archaeological sites.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2023Publisher:University of Chicago Press Authors: Harding, Jacqueline;Harding, Jacqueline;Despite its centrality in the philosophy of cognitive science, there has been little prior philosophical work engaging with the notion of representation in contemporary NLP practice.
