Utilizing the Marian MT framework, known for its effectiveness with resource-scarce languages, the research aims to overcome the linguistic complexities inherent in Ainu's polysynthetic structure. The paper delineates a comprehensive methodology encompassing data collection from diverse Ainu text sources, meticulous preprocessing, and the deployment of neural MT models, culminating in the achievement of significant SacreBLEU scores that underscore the models' translation accuracy. The findings illustrate the potential of advanced MT technology to facilitate linguistic preservation and educational endeavors, advocating for integrating such technologies in safeguarding endangered languages. This research not only underscores the critical role of MT in bridging language divides but also sets a precedent for employing computational linguistics to preserve cultural and linguistic heritage.

Using the household-level monthly panel dataset, I find that while households could not fully cope with idiosyncratic income shocks at that time, they mitigated fluctuations in indispensable consumption during economic hardship. In terms of risk-coping mechanisms, I find suggestive evidence that savings institutions helped mitigate vulnerabilities and that both using borrowing institutions and adjusting labor supply served as risk-coping strategies among households with less savings.

ABSTRACTThe grain‐size distributions of sediments can yield important information about sediment provenance and sedimentary processes; however, grain‐size distributions are frequently polymodal, rendering analyses difficult. To improve analyses of polymodal grain‐size data, the present study decomposed the grain‐size distributions of bottom surface sediments from Lake Kitaura, a shallow lake in Japan, into lognormal distributions and performed logratio analysis of their mixing proportions. The polymodal grain‐size distributions of the studied samples were separated into four common components at most sites. This logratio analysis revealed clear differences in the characteristics of the spatial distributions of the separated grain‐size components. The logratio values indicated that the three finer components were uniformly deposited within the lake, whereas the coarsest component was spatially diverse, reflecting differences in their sources and sedimentary processes. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of decomposition and logratio analysis of polymodal grain‐size distributions for estimating sedimentary processes. This method can be applied to modern sediments and for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using sediment cores.

Many Western-style paintings by Japanese artists in the early 1900s, though maintaining a unique quality, were greatly inspired by the works of Western artists. In this article, we employ machine learning to identify relationships and classify the works of Japanese and Western artists. The relationships are of significant interest to numerous art historians, as they can reveal how Western art was introduced to Japan. Historically, art historians have manually annotated these correspondences, which is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. In this article, we introduce a new method for finding correspondences between related artworks by comparing their overall outline information. This technique is based on Siamese neural networks (SNNs) and a self-supervised learning approach. Additionally, we have compiled a dataset of illustrations from Japanese artists such as Seiki Kuroda and Western artists such as Raphaël Collin, complete with correspondence annotations. However, to exhibit the unique quality of works by Japanese artists, we demonstrate that machine learning can classify between artworks created by Japanese artists and those created by Western artists.

The paper presents a novel analysis specifically investigating as to whether stocks associated with leading blockchain patent-developments influence the price volatility of Bitcoin across multiple time frequencies. It is important to further develop our understanding of the inter-dynamics between this relatively youthful financial product and pricing sensitivities associated with corporate technological advancement. Several interesting results are presented. First, Bitcoin is identified as a volatility receiver instead of a transmitter across all of the time frequencies considered during periods of patent development. Secondly, Microsoft, Mastercard, Intel and Visa contribute the largest volatility spillovers to the Bitcoin market due to patent development. Finally, for most of the companies considered, the calculated spillover effects towards Bitcoin markets are found to increase from the short-term to the long-term. These results suggest the existence of an avenue through which large corporations can influence cryptocurrency prices through their announcements of future technological intentions. The inherent risks incorporated with blockchain and cryptocurrency patent-development should be studied in detail, with particular warnings presented to those companies with no evidence of prior exposure and market knowledge.

Although a recently conducted analysis of sake brewed in pottery indicated that sake brewed in unglazed pottery contains more ethanol than that brewed in glazed pottery, little is known about the characteristics of sake brewed in pottery. In this study, we used two types of ceramic containers of identical size, one glazed and one unglazed, for small-scale sake brewing to evaluate the effects of glazing on fermentation properties. The following parameters were measured continuously in the sake samples over 3 weeks of fermentation: temperature, weight, ethanol concentration, and glucose concentration in sake mash. Taste-sensory values, minerals, and volatile components were also quantified in the final fermented sake mash. The results show that, in the unglazed containers, the temperature of the sake mash was lower and the weight loss was higher compared to the sake mash in the glazed containers. The quantity of ethanol and the levels of Na+, Fe3+, and Al3+ tended to be higher in the sake brewed in the unglazed pottery. A taste-sensory analysis revealed that umami and saltiness were also higher in the samples brewed in the unglazed pottery. These results suggest that glazing affects multiple fermentation parameters and the flavor of sake brewed in pottery. They may also suggest that the materials of the containers used in sake brewing generally affect the fermentation properties.

Jiménez Botta;This article analyzes the non-elite human rights vision promoted by the Russell III Tribunal and the Committee for Fundamental Rights and Democracy (Komitee für Grundrechte und Demokratie, Grundrechtekomitee). The article centers on leftists who utilized human rights to challenge state power since the late 1970s. The III Russell Tribunal (1978–79) brought international scrutiny to the West German state's restrictions against civil employment for suspected subversives. Policymakers, politicians, and liberal public intellectuals rejected the use of human rights rhetoric to address domestic wrongs. In their view, the sobriquet ‘human rights abuse’ was befitting solely to the cruelties committed by the National Socialists and in countries in the Global South and Eastern Europe. Veterans of Russell III founded the Grundrechtekomitee in 1980 to challenge this limited understanding of human rights. The second part of the article focuses on the Committee's engagement against Helmut Kohl's asylum policy and domestic racism. While focused on West Germany, the Committee mobilized a cosmopolitan vision of human rights that mobilized Holocaust memory to advocate for the rights of migrants and asylum seekers. The article argues that Russell III and the Grundrechtekomitee saw domestic human rights advocacy as a bulwark against undemocratic and xenophobic tendencies in Germany.

Using the household-level monthly panel dataset, I find that while households could not fully cope with idiosyncratic income shocks at that time, they mitigated fluctuations in indispensable consumption during economic hardship. In terms of risk-coping mechanisms, I find suggestive evidence that savings institutions helped mitigate vulnerabilities and that both using borrowing institutions and adjusting labor supply served as risk-coping strategies among households with less savings.

ABSTRACTThe grain‐size distributions of sediments can yield important information about sediment provenance and sedimentary processes; however, grain‐size distributions are frequently polymodal, rendering analyses difficult. To improve analyses of polymodal grain‐size data, the present study decomposed the grain‐size distributions of bottom surface sediments from Lake Kitaura, a shallow lake in Japan, into lognormal distributions and performed logratio analysis of their mixing proportions. The polymodal grain‐size distributions of the studied samples were separated into four common components at most sites. This logratio analysis revealed clear differences in the characteristics of the spatial distributions of the separated grain‐size components. The logratio values indicated that the three finer components were uniformly deposited within the lake, whereas the coarsest component was spatially diverse, reflecting differences in their sources and sedimentary processes. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of decomposition and logratio analysis of polymodal grain‐size distributions for estimating sedimentary processes. This method can be applied to modern sediments and for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using sediment cores.

Many Western-style paintings by Japanese artists in the early 1900s, though maintaining a unique quality, were greatly inspired by the works of Western artists. In this article, we employ machine learning to identify relationships and classify the works of Japanese and Western artists. The relationships are of significant interest to numerous art historians, as they can reveal how Western art was introduced to Japan. Historically, art historians have manually annotated these correspondences, which is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. In this article, we introduce a new method for finding correspondences between related artworks by comparing their overall outline information. This technique is based on Siamese neural networks (SNNs) and a self-supervised learning approach. Additionally, we have compiled a dataset of illustrations from Japanese artists such as Seiki Kuroda and Western artists such as Raphaël Collin, complete with correspondence annotations. However, to exhibit the unique quality of works by Japanese artists, we demonstrate that machine learning can classify between artworks created by Japanese artists and those created by Western artists.

The paper presents a novel analysis specifically investigating as to whether stocks associated with leading blockchain patent-developments influence the price volatility of Bitcoin across multiple time frequencies. It is important to further develop our understanding of the inter-dynamics between this relatively youthful financial product and pricing sensitivities associated with corporate technological advancement. Several interesting results are presented. First, Bitcoin is identified as a volatility receiver instead of a transmitter across all of the time frequencies considered during periods of patent development. Secondly, Microsoft, Mastercard, Intel and Visa contribute the largest volatility spillovers to the Bitcoin market due to patent development. Finally, for most of the companies considered, the calculated spillover effects towards Bitcoin markets are found to increase from the short-term to the long-term. These results suggest the existence of an avenue through which large corporations can influence cryptocurrency prices through their announcements of future technological intentions. The inherent risks incorporated with blockchain and cryptocurrency patent-development should be studied in detail, with particular warnings presented to those companies with no evidence of prior exposure and market knowledge.

Although a recently conducted analysis of sake brewed in pottery indicated that sake brewed in unglazed pottery contains more ethanol than that brewed in glazed pottery, little is known about the characteristics of sake brewed in pottery. In this study, we used two types of ceramic containers of identical size, one glazed and one unglazed, for small-scale sake brewing to evaluate the effects of glazing on fermentation properties. The following parameters were measured continuously in the sake samples over 3 weeks of fermentation: temperature, weight, ethanol concentration, and glucose concentration in sake mash. Taste-sensory values, minerals, and volatile components were also quantified in the final fermented sake mash. The results show that, in the unglazed containers, the temperature of the sake mash was lower and the weight loss was higher compared to the sake mash in the glazed containers. The quantity of ethanol and the levels of Na+, Fe3+, and Al3+ tended to be higher in the sake brewed in the unglazed pottery. A taste-sensory analysis revealed that umami and saltiness were also higher in the samples brewed in the unglazed pottery. These results suggest that glazing affects multiple fermentation parameters and the flavor of sake brewed in pottery. They may also suggest that the materials of the containers used in sake brewing generally affect the fermentation properties.

The article centers on leftists who utilized human rights to challenge state power since the late 1970s. The III Russell Tribunal (1978–79) brought international scrutiny to the West German state's restrictions against civil employment for suspected subversives. Policymakers, politicians, and liberal public intellectuals rejected the use of human rights rhetoric to address domestic wrongs. In their view, the sobriquet ‘human rights abuse’ was befitting solely to the cruelties committed by the National Socialists and in countries in the Global South and Eastern Europe. Veterans of Russell III founded the Grundrechtekomitee in 1980 to challenge this limited understanding of human rights. The second part of the article focuses on the Committee's engagement against Helmut Kohl's asylum policy and domestic racism. While focused on West Germany, the Committee mobilized a cosmopolitan vision of human rights that mobilized Holocaust memory to advocate for the rights of migrants and asylum seekers. The article argues that Russell III and the Grundrechtekomitee saw domestic human rights advocacy as a bulwark against undemocratic and xenophobic tendencies in Germany.
