Hubert (Jim) Markl was a zoologist and animal behavioural physiologist; but, beyond that, he was arguably the most influential figure in European science policy and the key person influencing the relationship between science and society in Germany. He uniquely served as president of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Science Foundation) and of the Max Planck Gesellschaft. In these roles he was an outstanding and bold advocate for scientific research in Germany and throughout Europe, and his astute judgement, cogency and intellectual rigour commanded the respect of all his peers. His occupancy of the two most senior positions in German science policy followed from his earlier substantial scientific contributions to the emerging discipline of behavioural ecology, as well as his books on science, society and culture. Markl was a leading spokesperson in Germany on contested issues at the interface between science and society; for example, he was an eloquent advocate of stem cell research, speaking out against the political mainstream. He also strove to expose fully, and acknowledge, the Max Planck Society's responsibility for atrocities committed by the Kaiser Wilhelm Gesellschaft scientists during the Nazi era; Markl will be remembered as the president who oversaw a historical analysis of the involvement of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gesellschaft (the scientific society that legally preceded the Max Planck Gesellschaft), and in 2001 he apologized in the name of the Max Planck Society for the expulsion and deaths of Jewish scientists.

The environmental topic arrived on the political agenda questioning citizens, groups and institutions. From this concert of actors, universities are relevant due to its social incidence and critical tradition. Today, Mexican Universities claim the sustainability. This paper aims to determine the moments that mark the gradual assimilation of the environmental issue in public universities, and characterize the scope of this appropriation in its substantive tasks. The supplies are secondary documental data, public politic and specialized articles. As a conclusion, the environmental issue has penetrated on university through a formal and informal way, being displayed in three core areas, but those are not articulated each other.

Social media and other online sites are being increasingly scrutinized as platforms for cyberbullying and hate speech. Many machine learning algorithms, such as support vector machines, have been adopted to create classification tools to identify and potentially filter patterns of negative speech. While effective for prediction, these methodologies yield models that are difficult to interpret. In addition, many studies focus on classifying comments as either negative or neutral, rather than further separating negative comments into subcategories. To address both of these concerns, we introduce a two-stage model for classifying text. With this model, we illustrate the use of internal lexicons, collections of words generated from a pre-classified training dataset of comments that are specific to several subcategories of negative comments. In the first stage, a machine learning algorithm classifies each comment as negative or neutral, or more generally target or nontarget. The second stage of model building leverages the internal lexicons (called L2CLs) to create features specific to each subcategory. These features, along with others, are then used in a random forest model to classify the comments into the subcategories of interest. We demonstrate our approach using two sets of data. Se busca aportar al conocimiento de los procesos productivos agrarios en la región latinoamericana a través de explorar en los efectos, el potencial y los retos que traen consigo la ciencia y la tecnología aplicadas en el sector agropecuario. Al dar cuenta de los componentes del modelo corporativo agropecuario (MCA) en la región y de su difusión, es posible observar que el paradigma tecnológico en que se sustenta no ha dado respuesta a los problemas de inequidad, exclusión y pobreza típicos de la región; por el contrario, ha exacerbado nudos conflictivos en diferentes ámbitos de la vida social y de la naturaleza. Observamos el polo capitalista de la agricultura por concentrarse ahí uso y el abuso de los recursos tecnológicos en la explotación del suelo. Seguir el desempeño de las corporaciones agroalimentaria e industriales se justifica porque ha devenido en el esquema de organización productiva que, de acuerdo con los gobiernos de la región, más promete en términos de prosperidad; también porque es predominante, en el sentido de que es en función de éste que se fijan el valor y los precios que operan el mercado global de bienes agropecuarios.

En el mundo, la inequidad laboral entre hombres y mujeres tiende a estrecharse en el último cuarto de siglo, empero, los avances están perdiendo celeridad; la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT, 2016) estima que serán necesarios al menos setenta años para colmar la brecha salarial por género. Desde este marco general de inequidad, este artículo exhibe la situación prevaleciente en materia de trabajo académico en las universidades públicas de México; el análisis se sitúa en el marco de un productivismo que imprime un sello inédito a la organización del trabajo científico y educativo. Se trata de mostrar que ésta lógica operativa encuentra en las tecnologías de la información y comunicación (TIC) un recurso clave para apuntalar las competencias individuales, así como visibilizar los resultados académicos. Se concluye que, en su variedad, versatilidad y potencial, la apropiación estos recursos son la oportunidad para coadyuvar en la reducción de otras diferencias laborales entre géneros en este ámbito profesional

El documento ésta estructurado tres secciones. La primera presenta un acercamiento desde la teoría social a los conceptos de ciudad, asentamientos irregulares y exclusión social, intentando con ello hacer una aproximación a las diferentes dinámicas socia-les que se concentran en el territorio urbano. En el segundo apartado refiere los principales rasgos económicos del estado de Zacatecas y sus políticas locales de desarrollo con efectos en la agudización de la pobreza, el incremento de la vulnerabilidad y la desigualdad social urbana. La tercera parte expone la metodología y el análisis de los resultados, valorando lo que representa estar excluido de la ciudad en los ámbitos mencionados.
