    In this paper, we discuss novel and existing archaeological data from the San Bartolomé de Rebordáns site (Tui, Spain) that suggest the importance of Tude as a place of power in the Late Antique Sueve Gallaecia (411–585 CE) and later, in the Iberian Visigoth kingdom (585–711 CE). Here, we apply a combination of complementary techniques: archaeological survey, absolute radiocarbon dating, osteological and stable isotope analyses of the human remains, and the revision of the available contextual information. We recovered the remains of seven individuals with poor preservation and accelerated degradation from the Late Antique necropolis. These individuals were identified here as possible members of the social elite due to their archaeological context, becoming the first-time human remains relative to this social status within this chronology have been detected in NW Iberian Peninsula. The isotopic data obtained is broadly compared with contemporaneous sites along the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands for a complete interpretation. Additionally, we generate a simple routed and concentration-dependent Bayesian model to predict the source of dietary carbon in consumers, from which we calculate the marine radiocarbon reservoir effect. Despite the low number of individuals analysed, we argue that our results are of great archaeological significance as this represents the first biomolecular approach to the Late Antique (5th–8th centuries CE) social elite individuals from the northwestern and probably the whole Iberian Peninsula. 1. This paper presents a novel perspective concerning the emergence of al-Andalus based on the study of food. This is a field of human behaviour that is highly informative in socio-cultural terms because of its links to ethno-religious identity. The aim is to demonstrate the usefulness of studying zooarchaeological evidence that provides information on the consumption of (or abstinence from) pork by different peninsular communities during the first centuries of al-Andalus. The results show the analytical potential of this line of research for examining the advance of the process of social Islamisation, understood as the fundamental dynamic of historical change in the shaping of Andalusi society, and one of the main mechanisms used by the Umayyad state to establish its power. The PhD project on which this research is based was funded by the former Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (FPU Program) under Grant AP2012-4717. The author is currently a “Juan de la Cierva-Formación” Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Alicante (Ref. FJC2020-044358-I) sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) and the EU NextGenerationEU/PRTR.

    In 1935, the United States passed Social Security Act (SSA) providing financial security to American families. I use the individual census data for 1940 and 1960 to show that women from states that allowed for more social spending under the SSA had substantially more children than women from states that allowed for lower social benefits. I also use a new panel of state-level fertility by parity between 1935 and 1959 to show that family allowances were connected to first, second and third parities, but that there was a differential effect according to the different social programs and race.

Cognitive approach to the fantastic as a linkage: the theory of apperceptions. Definition and applications in short stories by Julio Cortázar, Jorge Luis Borges and Ángel Olgoso Abstract. In this paper, we develop and present a new theory of the fantastic called apperception theory. Considering the cognitive sciences research of the last decades, especially those related to embodied simulation, mirror neurons and the space of intersubjectivity, we define the fantastic as the linkage that can arise from a mismatch of apperceptions as an anomaly, alteration or transgression of at least one of the cognitive and hermeneutic levels that operate in each narrative experience. The cognitive approach also makes it possible to overcome criticisms of the fantastic as a possible autonomous literary genre or as a narrative modality that is implanted over different narrative, while becomes important the degree of depth of the fantastic linkage between the reader’s apperceptions and the text. For that, we present a possible analytical scheme for researching narrative texts. Keywords: fantastic; cognitive sciences; apperception; embodied simulation; intersubjectivity.

    For over five centuries the Gitanos/Calé of Spain have shown a marked preference for marrying within their ethnocultural community. In the last decades, however, various Gitano groups have experienced a rise in intermarriage that is transforming their families, their identities and their interactions with mainstream society. This paper analyzes this historical transformation in an area of Andalusia that shows some of the highest concentrations of Romani people in Western Europe. Ethnographic and historical-demographic research allowed the reconstitution of 3,336 Gitano families formed from 1900 to 2006. Of these 421 (12,6%) were mixed. This rate increased to over 25% in the 2000s, and in some localities about half of the recent Gitano marriages were mixed. Three major findings emerge from this case study. Firstly, the local environment plays a key role in intermarriage. Local history generated different intercultural environments and relationships in adjacent municipalities, leading to diverse levels of intermarriage. Secondly, more Gitanas are marrying non-Gitano men than vice versa. Since 1990 Gitanas made 60% of all mixed unions. Thirdly, Gitanas in mixed marriages tend to marry later and to have fewer children than those in endogamous unions. Thus, these women may have been trailblazers in the fertility transitions of Gitano women. The paper hypothesizes that the incorporation of the Gitano/Calé people into the institutions of the Welfare State has favored interactions across ethnic boundaries, reduced social distance, and facilitated intermarriage. The upward mobility of some Gitano families may be turning socioeconomic and educational homogamy against ethnic endogamy.

    We report the synthesis, spectroscopic properties, and anti-proliferative efficacy of the adamantane-linked 1,2,4-triazole derivative 5-(adamantan-1-yl)-4-(3-chlorophenyl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione. Crystal packing and intermolecular interactions have been quantified using Hirshfeld surfaces and two-dimensional fingerprint plots. ADMET characteristics, bioavailability, and drug-likeness define the compound’s bioactivity. The gastrointestinal absorption is anticipated to be high, and the projected bioavailability score is 0.55. The topological polar surface area and iLOGP, XLOGP, WLOGP, and MLOGP lipophilicity parameters have been calculated to be 65.70 Å2, 3.24, 4.74, 5.05, and 4.07, respectively. To investigate 5A4ClT's EGFR inhibition and its use in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, Autodock Vina was used to dock it with the crystal structure of the EGFR kinase domain protein. The title chemical hydrophobically interacts with the receptor residues LEU718, VAL726, ALA743, GLU762, THR790, LEU792, MET793, GLY796, ARG841, ASN842, and LEU844 and forms hydrogen bonds with ASP855 and THR854 with an affinity of −8.3 kcal/mol. Toxicity end points and comparison with NSCLC drugs yielded promising findings. 120 ns molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the ligand’s dynamic stability in the target protein’s binding pocket. This research lays the groundwork for future in vivo investigations of 5A4ClT as a non-small cell lung cancer therapy.

    This paper has the dual purpose of outlining the case history related to paralepsis in literary texts, highlighting the different possibilities of application and the narrative effects that derive in any case towards a transgressive fantastic alteration, and of trying to update the referential system drawn by Genette in 1972. For that, we will draw on some postulates and principles of linguistics and cognitive narratology, applying them to two specific stories by Michele Mari, Josef K. and Lamento del guerriero, when we will show how unexpected informations offered by a particular character (bottom-up vertical paralepsis and internal horizontal paralepsis) produce metaleptic shifts that dis-locate and re-locate the reading around different attractors that transgress the fictional logic (Remorini 2023).

    This paper is an attempt at evaluating roadside shrines and crosses as significant elements of the cultural heritage of Poland and Europe. Evaluation was carried out in the context of the role these objects play in the rural landscape. We examined roadside shrines and crosses that are a testimony of piety of the local community. Roadside sacral architecture was studied within the area of a representative rural commune in South-Eastern Poland. Point evaluation was used to assess the role of shrines and crosses in three most important aspects: spatial, social-cultural, and natural. We evaluated the artistic and historical values of these objects, their significance in contemporary rural landscape structure, as well as material evidence of piety left at these objects by the local people.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused uncertainty and instability in the population regarding the capacity of institutions to manage and mitigate its impact. In such an emergency, it is possible to ask how higher education institutions have dealt with this situation and what elements of institutional management have had the most significant influence in controlling stress and academic anxiety. The study aims to measure the level of academic anxiety among university students in Ibero-America since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also seeks to identify the associated variables; some linked to the digital sphere, which affect the perception of the evaluation made by these students of the institutional management carried out by higher education institutions in Ibero-America. This article provides the quantitative research results that collected data using an anonymous online survey conducted from April 6 to April 24, 2020, in some higher education universities in Ibero-America, including 523 students surveyed. The data analysis is based only on the survey respondents’ answers registered in institutions in six Ibero-American countries. The results identify psycho-social variables associated with the level of academic anxiety students perceive. They also point to the need for higher education institutions in Ibero-America to review their management models to guarantee their educational communities (e.g., students). This support consists of reinforcing soft skills that increase the capacity to transform the educational model.

Manganelli; Centuria; paratesto; racconto; peritesto; microracconto. Title. The Unnamed Short Story. Analysis of the Paratext of Centuria. Cento piccoli romanzi fiume by Giorgio Manganelli Abstract. This essay analyses the elements of the editorial, authorial and allographical paratext of the edition of Centuria. Cento piccoli romanzi fiume by Giorgio Manganelli, which has been published by Adelphi since 1995, highlighting how the keys to reading and interpreting Manganelli's text attempt to suggest an idea of experimentation, of a unique and singular case within a literary tradition that is also familiar and codified. Keyword. Manganelli; Centuria; paratext; short story; peritext; flash fiction.

    Authors: Said-Hung, Elias; Rodríguez-Peral, Eva Matarín; Mejía Corredor, Carolina;

    A pandemia de COVID-19 causou incerteza e instabilidade na população em relação à capacidade das instituições de administrar e mitigar seu impacto. Em tal emergência, é possível perguntar como as instituições de ensino superior lidaram com essa situação e que elementos da administração institucional tiveram maior influência no controle do estresse e da ansiedade acadêmica. O objetivo deste estudo é medir o nível de ansiedade acadêmica entre os estudantes universitários na Ibero-América desde março de 2020, como resultado da pandemia de COVID-19. O estudo também procura identificar as variáveis associadas, algumas ligadas à esfera digital, que afetam a percepção da avaliação feita por esses estudantes da gestão institucional realizada pelas instituições de ensino superior na Ibero-América. Este artigo fornece os resultados quantitativos da pesquisa que coletou dados utilizando uma pesquisa on-line realizada de 6 a 24 de abril de 2020 em algumas universidades de ensino superior da Ibero-América, incluindo um total de 523 estudantes pesquisados. A análise dos dados se baseia apenas nas respostas dos entrevistados da pesquisa registrados em instituições de seis países ibero-americanos. Os resultados identificam variáveis psicossociais associadas com o nível de ansiedade acadêmica percebido pelos estudantes. Eles também apontam para a necessidade de as instituições de ensino superior na Ibero-América reverem seus modelos de gestão a fim de garantir suas comunidades educacionais (por exemplo, estudantes). Esse apoio consiste em reforçar as competências transversais que aumentam a capacidade de transformar o modelo educacional.
