AbstractReverend Thomas Bridges’ Yagan-English dictionary (1879) has hitherto been little explored outside of linguistics but is highly valuable as a complementary source to archaeological, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic records in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina and Chile). The dictionary contains 22,800 entries and yields rich information concerning the marine lifeways of the Yagan and their and intimate knowledge about Fuegian seascapes. The idea behind this paper is that environments have strong bearings on linguistic vocabularies. Treating words as archaeological objects that map onto landscapes, we identify important landforms for Yagan marine foragers and Norwegian fisher-farmers in a comparative study of word frequencies in Bridges’ dictionary and Ivar Aasen’s Norwegian dictionary (1850). Moreover, we explore in detail how marine lifestyles and Fuegian seascapes emerge in Bridges’ dictionary and discuss the dictionary’s relevance for historical archaeology in Tierra del Fuego.

Yet the large number of well-furnished female burials from this period suggests a broader change in the role of women. The authors present the results of isotopic analysis of seventh-century burials, comparing male and female mobility and the mobility of females from well-furnished versus poorly/unfurnished burials. Results suggest increased mobility during the Conversion Period that is, paradoxically, most noticeable among women buried in poorly furnished graves; their well-furnished contemporaries were more likely to have grown up near to their place of burial.

At the negotiations of the Third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1973-1982), industrialised states with the capacity to exploit the deep seabed had a fundamentally different vision of a regime regulating deep-sea mining than most developing countries. I investigate the Dutch engagement with the international regulation of deep-sea mining and show that officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs initially manoeuvred to position the Netherlands as a bridge builder between the two competing visions of regulating deep-sea mining. However, as Dutch companies ventured into the deep-sea mining business, conflicts between the ministries of Economic Affairs and Foreign Affairs became more prominent, and the Dutch position became more aligned with other industrialised states. Nonetheless, Dutch officials remained sceptical of plans to pursue an alternative legal regime favourable to business, which the Reagan administration championed. That is why the Netherlands ultimately signed the Law of the Sea, despite strong US opposition.

AbstractArchaeological artifacts play important role in understanding the past developments of the humanity. However, the artifacts are often highly fragmented and degraded, with many details and parts missing due to centuries’ long degradation. Archaeologists and conservators attempt to reconstruct the original state of the objects either physically or virtually. This process includes characterizing and matching fragments’ features to identify which ones belong together. However, this process currently requires an extensive and tedious manual labor. Recent development in computational techniques gave rise to computer-assisted ways of virtual reconstruction, where the computer suggests solutions to the puzzle of scattered fragments and supplements or fully replaces manual labor. However, the capabilities of computational techniques remain limited in many aspects. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art computational techniques for puzzle and virtual reconstruction problems in cultural heritage applications, in general – with a particular interest in archaeological textiles. We overview existing computational methods, their applications and limitations. Afterward, based on the current knowledge gaps, we discuss where the field should go next.

This article compares the development of primary education in Ireland and Norway, from its establishment in the nineteenth century until present time. The aim of the article is to discuss how and to what degree nation-state formation after independence in Ireland (1922) and Norway (1905) created fundamental and persistent structures for the development of primary schooling, as well as the role that religion and nation-building played in this. Previous research on the development of Irish and Norwegian schooling and official documents and reports makes up the research material. The article demonstrates that, despite institutional secularisation around the world from the nineteenth century onwards, religious and national peculiarities in the establishment of primary education in Ireland and Norway continue to characterise, and to some extent explain, the differences in Irish and Norwegian education today.

The decarbonisation of the construction sector is critical to meet national and international climate goals. Literature gives many examples of measures for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from buildings. However, few studies investigate the tradeoffs between potentially conflicting GHG emission reduction measures or the affordability of these measures. Ydalir is a Zero Emission Neighbourhood (ZEN) pilot area in the Norwegian research centre for Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in smart cities. One of the major challenges Ydalir faces is how to reduce GHG emissions from the neighbourhood towards a net zero emission building (nZEB). Additional challenges include retaining social, environmental, andeconomical sustainability for both the project developer and building owners and avoid suboptimal solutions. This paper investigates the trade-offs between energy efficiency and material use for two scenarios. The scenarios are a Norwegian building code scenario and a passive house scenario. The analysis ascertains total energy demand, whole life cycle GHG emissions, and cost assessment for two housing units within Ydalir Torg. The results show lower total GHG emissions and lower GHG emissions from operational energy use in the passive house scenario, and an increase in GHG emissions from the production phase due to thicker levels of insulation. The cost assessment shows increased investment costs for the project developer in the passive house scenario, despite lower operational costs for the building owner. Total GHG emission payback times for the passive house scenario are at 18 - 19 years. Cost payback time varies between 10 - 37 years. This paper is useful for practitioners that wish to balance GHG emission reduction requirements between operational energy use, material use and affordability. Abstract The building envelope, an essential component of any building, plays a critical role in meeting energy efficiency and thermal comfort requirements. Incorporating phase change materials (PCM) into the building envelope can offer an opportunity to minimize energy usage and enhance thermal comfort by offsetting daily temperature fluctuations. However, the optimal performance of PCM is contingent on the material’s placement and thickness within the building envelope. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of positioning and thickness of PCM on thermal comfort and heating loads in a lightweight timber building in Trondheim, Norway. Four scenarios were considered based on the positioning of the PCM layer in the exterior wall and roof. Using IDA ICE, parametric simulations were conducted for various PCM wallboard positions and thicknesses in the exterior wall and roof. In Nordic climates, adding PCM reduces the risk of annual overheating. The findings of this study showed that installing 75mm of PCM wallboard in the exterior wall’s inner layer reduced the annual heating load by 2.3%. Compared to the base case scenario, increasing PCM thickness reduced zonal maximum indoor air temperatures by up to 6.2°C. This study underscored the importance of carefully considering the placement and thickness of PCM in building envelopes for optimal performance.

To evaluate the suitability of materials and solutions in building envelopes, it is necessary to quantify the relevant climate loads. The critical climate load is typically a combination of multiple parameters, such as temperature and precipitation. Climate indices may be used for finding critical climate loads, and their use helps guide design choices when adapting to local climates. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suitability of the Canadian Moisture Index (MI) for use in Norway. The values of MI are linked to design recommendations in the Canadian building code, thus enabling a tangible link between index values and moisture design practice. MI has been calculated for 12 locations in Norway, and compared to two indices already in national use: the driving rain index (DRI) and wood decay potential index (WDPI). The applicability of a climate index as a design tool depends on (1) describing a relevant climate stress; (2) logical differentiation of values, and; (3) translating index values to design recommendations. These are fulfilled for MI in a Canadian context, thus making it applicable as a design tool. However, significant adaptation may be required for the index to be adopted to a Norwegian context. As MI and DRI have a similar field of application, introducing MI into a Norwegian context may therefore be redundant. A drawback with the Norwegian indices is the relative weak link between index values and design recommendations, thus further development of recommendations based on index values may improve their applicability as design tools. Abstract The joints around heavy terrace doors are considered a weak point in rain-exposed façades, as it is vulnerable to defects in design and construction. The insertion process of heavy sliding doors is a notable challenge. Design recommendations from manufacturers as well as national advisory agencies are currently lacking. This paper presents a full-scale laboratory study on the water tightness of heavy sliding doors with joints waterproofed according to five different solutions. The door assembly is mounted in a pressurized cabinet with water spray nozzles to simulate wind-driven rain. The interior side of the joint around the door is monitored for moisture leaks at steadily increasing pressure levels. It was found that leaks most often occur in the corners of the frame. Sealant mounted before the door itself was hoisted in place tended to be twisted or distorted as the door was adjusted in the frame, spoiling the waterproofing. A common feature of the most watertight solutions was that the sealant was mounted after the door itself was fastened to the frame. The sealant should be continuous, flexible, mounted in a single plane, and preferably be accessible during the assembly process. Waterproofing recommendations for the design and insertion of sliding doors should account for practical challenges brought on by the heavy weight.

AbstractReverend Thomas Bridges’ Yagan-English dictionary (1879) has hitherto been little explored outside of linguistics but is highly valuable as a complementary source to archaeological, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic records in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina and Chile). The dictionary contains 22,800 entries and yields rich information concerning the marine lifeways of the Yagan and their and intimate knowledge about Fuegian seascapes. The idea behind this paper is that environments have strong bearings on linguistic vocabularies. Treating words as archaeological objects that map onto landscapes, we identify important landforms for Yagan marine foragers and Norwegian fisher-farmers in a comparative study of word frequencies in Bridges’ dictionary and Ivar Aasen’s Norwegian dictionary (1850). Moreover, we explore in detail how marine lifestyles and Fuegian seascapes emerge in Bridges’ dictionary and discuss the dictionary’s relevance for historical archaeology in Tierra del Fuego.

Yet the large number of well-furnished female burials from this period suggests a broader change in the role of women. The authors present the results of isotopic analysis of seventh-century burials, comparing male and female mobility and the mobility of females from well-furnished versus poorly/unfurnished burials. Results suggest increased mobility during the Conversion Period that is, paradoxically, most noticeable among women buried in poorly furnished graves; their well-furnished contemporaries were more likely to have grown up near to their place of burial.

At the negotiations of the Third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1973-1982), industrialised states with the capacity to exploit the deep seabed had a fundamentally different vision of a regime regulating deep-sea mining than most developing countries. I investigate the Dutch engagement with the international regulation of deep-sea mining and show that officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs initially manoeuvred to position the Netherlands as a bridge builder between the two competing visions of regulating deep-sea mining. However, as Dutch companies ventured into the deep-sea mining business, conflicts between the ministries of Economic Affairs and Foreign Affairs became more prominent, and the Dutch position became more aligned with other industrialised states. Nonetheless, Dutch officials remained sceptical of plans to pursue an alternative legal regime favourable to business, which the Reagan administration championed. That is why the Netherlands ultimately signed the Law of the Sea, despite strong US opposition.

AbstractArchaeological artifacts play important role in understanding the past developments of the humanity. However, the artifacts are often highly fragmented and degraded, with many details and parts missing due to centuries’ long degradation. Archaeologists and conservators attempt to reconstruct the original state of the objects either physically or virtually. This process includes characterizing and matching fragments’ features to identify which ones belong together. However, this process currently requires an extensive and tedious manual labor. Recent development in computational techniques gave rise to computer-assisted ways of virtual reconstruction, where the computer suggests solutions to the puzzle of scattered fragments and supplements or fully replaces manual labor. However, the capabilities of computational techniques remain limited in many aspects. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art computational techniques for puzzle and virtual reconstruction problems in cultural heritage applications, in general – with a particular interest in archaeological textiles. We overview existing computational methods, their applications and limitations. Afterward, based on the current knowledge gaps, we discuss where the field should go next.

This article compares the development of primary education in Ireland and Norway, from its establishment in the nineteenth century until present time. The aim of the article is to discuss how and to what degree nation-state formation after independence in Ireland (1922) and Norway (1905) created fundamental and persistent structures for the development of primary schooling, as well as the role that religion and nation-building played in this. Previous research on the development of Irish and Norwegian schooling and official documents and reports makes up the research material. The article demonstrates that, despite institutional secularisation around the world from the nineteenth century onwards, religious and national peculiarities in the establishment of primary education in Ireland and Norway continue to characterise, and to some extent explain, the differences in Irish and Norwegian education today.

The decarbonisation of the construction sector is critical to meet national and international climate goals. Literature gives many examples of measures for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from buildings. However, few studies investigate the tradeoffs between potentially conflicting GHG emission reduction measures or the affordability of these measures. Ydalir is a Zero Emission Neighbourhood (ZEN) pilot area in the Norwegian research centre for Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in smart cities. One of the major challenges Ydalir faces is how to reduce GHG emissions from the neighbourhood towards a net zero emission building (nZEB). Additional challenges include retaining social, environmental, andeconomical sustainability for both the project developer and building owners and avoid suboptimal solutions. This paper investigates the trade-offs between energy efficiency and material use for two scenarios. The scenarios are a Norwegian building code scenario and a passive house scenario. The analysis ascertains total energy demand, whole life cycle GHG emissions, and cost assessment for two housing units within Ydalir Torg. The results show lower total GHG emissions and lower GHG emissions from operational energy use in the passive house scenario, and an increase in GHG emissions from the production phase due to thicker levels of insulation. The cost assessment shows increased investment costs for the project developer in the passive house scenario, despite lower operational costs for the building owner. Total GHG emission payback times for the passive house scenario are at 18 - 19 years. Cost payback time varies between 10 - 37 years. This paper is useful for practitioners that wish to balance GHG emission reduction requirements between operational energy use, material use and affordability. Abstract The building envelope, an essential component of any building, plays a critical role in meeting energy efficiency and thermal comfort requirements. Incorporating phase change materials (PCM) into the building envelope can offer an opportunity to minimize energy usage and enhance thermal comfort by offsetting daily temperature fluctuations. However, the optimal performance of PCM is contingent on the material’s placement and thickness within the building envelope. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of positioning and thickness of PCM on thermal comfort and heating loads in a lightweight timber building in Trondheim, Norway. Four scenarios were considered based on the positioning of the PCM layer in the exterior wall and roof. Using IDA ICE, parametric simulations were conducted for various PCM wallboard positions and thicknesses in the exterior wall and roof. In Nordic climates, adding PCM reduces the risk of annual overheating. The findings of this study showed that installing 75mm of PCM wallboard in the exterior wall’s inner layer reduced the annual heating load by 2.3%. Compared to the base case scenario, increasing PCM thickness reduced zonal maximum indoor air temperatures by up to 6.2°C. This study underscored the importance of carefully considering the placement and thickness of PCM in building envelopes for optimal performance.

To evaluate the suitability of materials and solutions in building envelopes, it is necessary to quantify the relevant climate loads. The critical climate load is typically a combination of multiple parameters, such as temperature and precipitation. Climate indices may be used for finding critical climate loads, and their use helps guide design choices when adapting to local climates. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suitability of the Canadian Moisture Index (MI) for use in Norway. The values of MI are linked to design recommendations in the Canadian building code, thus enabling a tangible link between index values and moisture design practice. MI has been calculated for 12 locations in Norway, and compared to two indices already in national use: the driving rain index (DRI) and wood decay potential index (WDPI). The applicability of a climate index as a design tool depends on (1) describing a relevant climate stress; (2) logical differentiation of values, and; (3) translating index values to design recommendations. These are fulfilled for MI in a Canadian context, thus making it applicable as a design tool. However, significant adaptation may be required for the index to be adopted to a Norwegian context. As MI and DRI have a similar field of application, introducing MI into a Norwegian context may therefore be redundant. A drawback with the Norwegian indices is the relative weak link between index values and design recommendations, thus further development of recommendations based on index values may improve their applicability as design tools. Abstract The joints around heavy terrace doors are considered a weak point in rain-exposed façades, as it is vulnerable to defects in design and construction. The insertion process of heavy sliding doors is a notable challenge. Design recommendations from manufacturers as well as national advisory agencies are currently lacking. This paper presents a full-scale laboratory study on the water tightness of heavy sliding doors with joints waterproofed according to five different solutions. The door assembly is mounted in a pressurized cabinet with water spray nozzles to simulate wind-driven rain. The interior side of the joint around the door is monitored for moisture leaks at steadily increasing pressure levels. It was found that leaks most often occur in the corners of the frame. Sealant mounted before the door itself was hoisted in place tended to be twisted or distorted as the door was adjusted in the frame, spoiling the waterproofing. A common feature of the most watertight solutions was that the sealant was mounted after the door itself was fastened to the frame. The sealant should be continuous, flexible, mounted in a single plane, and preferably be accessible during the assembly process. Waterproofing recommendations for the design and insertion of sliding doors should account for practical challenges brought on by the heavy weight.
