    Knowledge of the convict period in New South Wales has been substantially expanded and enriched through a number of revisionist scholarly studies in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The cumulative result has been the establishment of a number of new orthodoxies. These studies have drawn on a number of analytic frameworks including feminism and cliometrics, successfully challenging the previous historiography. The rich archival sources in New South Wales have been utilised to reformulate the convict period by a number of scholars, demonstrating the complexity of life in the penal colony. Academic divisions between what are regarded as "Australian" history and "British" history have imposed their own agendas on writing about transportation. This study challenges. this imposition through an examination of petitioners' approaches to the home and colonial administrations. A lacuna in the scholarly studies has been a lack of attention to transportation's consequences for married couples and their children. This study seeks to narrow that gap through these petitions. The findings of the study demonstrate the continuation of links between those who were transported and those who remained in Britain. It is argued that these findings have important implications for future research within Britain, and that what is disclosed by these petitions and the individuals who were involved in on-going communications cannot be restricted either to Australian or convict histories. Our knowledge of what transportation meant to individuals in the periphery as well as those in the metropole is diminished if the focus remains firmly on the settler community. Supplementary material from contemporary sources as well as the official records passing between the two administrations has been utilised and these supplementary sources suggest that there was a broad qivision between official publicly stated policy and practice in respect of transportees' family circumstances. Chapter One establishes the architecture of the thesis and explains the methodology adopted. Chapter Two offers a reinterpretation of the colony's formation in 1788 and inserts the "convict audience" of that day into the historiography. Chapter Three examines two petitioners writing from different gaols in Britain prior to their expected transportation. A resolution of the division between cliometrics and this more qualitative humanist approach is proposed. Chapter Four is a study of petitioners in Britain and a study of the process required for a reunion and reconstitution of family units in New South Wales. Chapter Five seeks to a resiting of male convicts as family members through an examination of a number of contemporary sources. Chapter Six examines the petitions raised by husbands and fathers for their wives and families to be given free passages to the colony. Chapter Seven provides case studies of three transportees and their experiences of the petitioning process. In Chapter Eight the focus broadens out from married men to examine and provide a revision of convicts' correspondence with their relatives and friends in Britain. Such correspondence has previously provided the basis for nationalist interpretations; the revision here suggests that such interpretations are anachronistic. Chapter Nine is an extended metaphor drawing the material together to the conclusions of the study.

    Straipsnio objektas – šventi baltų miškeliai Lietuvoje. Straipsnyje formuluojama ir grindžiama idėja, kad senoji baltų religinė tradicija, susijusi su šventais miškeliais, vienokiu ar kitokiu pavidalu pasiekė ir šiuos laikus. Nepaisant to, kad daugelis senųjų miškelių realiai išnyko iš Lietuvos kraštovaizdžio, liko nemažai lingvistinių, folkloro bei istorinių šaltinių (XII - XVIII a.) duomenų, liudijančių tam tikrų konkrečių vietovių sąsajas su jose augusiomis šventomis giraitėmis. Ikikrikščioniškos baltų religinės tradicijos atspindžius taip pat galima matyti XXI amžių pasiekusiuose religiniuose veiksmuose, atliekamuose tam tikruose miškeliuose ar prie tam tikrų konkrečių medžių, taip pat šių laikų žodinėje folklorinėje tradicijoje, susijusioje su konkrečiomis Lietuvos vietovėmis. Straipsnyje atkreipiamas dėmesys į tai, kad šį šventųjų miškelių fenomeną tyrinėti ir buvusias senąsias šventvietes atrasti gali padėti tik kompleksinės mokslinės metodologijos naudojimas.Atskiras dėmesys straipsnyje skiriamas pastaraisiais metais tyrinėtų vietovių, susijusių su senaisiais šventais baltų miškeliais, pristatymui. Skirtingi šaltiniai leidžia teigti, kad su senaisiais šventaisiais baltų miškeliais, senosiomis kulto vietomis (alkavietėmis) gali būti siejama: 1) Gojus, esantis prie Kernavės (Širvintų raj.); 2) Gojus, esantis prie Elektrėnų; 3)vieta, vadinta „Šventos liepos“, esanti netoli Trakų; bei 4) netoli Maišiagalos (Vilniaus raj.) augęs miškelis, vadintas „Kukaviečiu“. The article deals with the sacred groves of the Balts in Lithuania and presents the linguistic background, the historical documents from the 12th-18th century, the key folklore motifs of the topic, as well as selected examples of groves. The article also discusses possible relationships between pre-Christian religious traditions connected with the sacred groves and the ones which have survived into the 21st century. Despite the fact that the sacred groves of past ages have mostly disappeared on the landscape, this tradition has not significantly changed. Various religious activities which were carried out in sacred groves, at smaller groups of trees, and beneath separate trees enable us to learn, even if insignificantly, about the phenomenon. Interdisciplinary approach to sacred groves should be preferred in modern research.

    Ebifananyi 4, based on the Ham Mukasa Foundation Archive that HIPUganda digitised, has had several exhibition versions. This one puts a strong emphasis on the works produced by Ugandan artists and Dutch and Ugandan art students for the project. In this other exhibition creating an opportunity to explore Mukasa’s stories through various images and objects was the lead. See this short film for thoughts on the translation of the title of Ham Mukasa’s book on the three Kings; Simuda Nyuma, and the Luganda word Ekifananyi by curator Robinah Nansubuga and Artist Nathan Omiel. Participating artists in this exhibition are Achola Rosario, Eria Nsubuga, Fred Mutebi, Ian Mwesiga, Lwanga Emmanuel, Nathan Omiel, Papa Shabani, Sanaa Gateja and Violet Nantume. The Ugandan students followed Eria Nsubuga’s painting course at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, while the Dutch students were part of an elective I taught under the name ‘Illustrating (for) others’ at Academy Minerva in Groningen.

    This exhibit features work from Virginia Tech's Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies and computer science, education, and public history programs and an app developed around the history of the CI called CI-Spy. Founded in 1866 with 200 students, the Christiansburg Institute (CI) was a school that educated newly emancipated African Americans.     This collection of photographs was compiled as part of the MaltaPot project at the University of Malta. This project aims to enhance the understanding of pottery technology and provenancein Neolithic Malta, mainly dating to the Għar Dalam, Skorba (Early Neolithic), and Zebbuġ (Late Neolithic) phases. This collection presents sherds from the Għar Dalam phase, photographs, and microphotographs and lists their archaeological contexts and form. This collection was prepared thanks to the information from the National Museum of Archaeology (NMA), Malta, and the FRAGSUS project. The project used multiple techniques to characterise the pottery sherds, such as microscopy, polarised light microscope, X-Ray Fluorescence or X-Ray Diffraction. This collection presents the sherds which were not analysed using these destructive techniques, although they had a section ground flat for microphotography. Data collection was carried out between 2018-2020 by Dr Brogan. The document was compiled by 2023 Ms Richard-Trémeau. Photographs can be used if credited. This upload contains a PDF document and two zip files with the macroscopic photograph (Exterior surface) and the microphotographs.

    Professional (i.e. extra-academic) contract archaeology is an internationally widespread practice contributing significantly to the archaeology literature. However, professional knowledge production in archaeology, and most notably the professional report genre, is at times described as problematic. The problem descriptions are ambiguous and can be grouped under at least three different topics: concerns for content quality and practical accessibility, concerns for the comparably low degree of analytical and theoretical synthesizing in reports and concerns for lack of mutual knowledge transfer between academic archaeologists and professional archaeologists. Technical issues of access are to an increasing extent being solved. Format standardizations are also developing. Hence the report genre becomes more accessible, and the content more readable and informative. Yet articulations of attitudes toward the genre in archaeology text books and journal articles remain focused on the genre’s problems. The aim of my ongoing dissertation research is to nuance the understanding of the professional report genre in archaeology. I do so by analyzing factors shaping reporting as it takes place in the intersection between academic norms, professional values and market logics. I argue an improved genre understanding is crucial to diminish cultural issues of access to the report literature, and also as a basis for development of reporting practices. In the dissertation research I analyze (1) perceptions about the report genre in archaeology literature, (2) information policy regulating reporting in archaeology, (3) how report writers and county board professionals interpret the reporting and report auditing work tasks and (4) the frames of reference report writers bring into reporting. The aim of this paper is to explicate the research design consisting of four sub-studies, to briefly report on findings from study no. 4, and to discuss preliminary, partial results from study no. 2.

    15th International Conference Linguistic and Cultural Studies - Traditions and Innovations (LKTI) -- NOV 09-11, 2015 -- Tomsk, RUSSIA -- Natl Res Tomsk Polytechn Univ, Inst Power Engn, Dept Foreign Languages This study encourages a multidisciplinary research to identify parallels in the group belonging and chronology of South Siberian Turkic (Chulym Turkic and Bachat Teleut) and Yakut. There is solid evidence that the ancestors of modern Yakuts and their language originate from the Central Asian steppe Proto-Turkic community of the 1st century BC. South Siberian Turkic varieties have not been studied as thoroughly, but they are expected to have traces of some non-Turkic language substratum. The analysis of the Teleut gene pool has revealed two different components of the Turkic and non-Turkic nature, which gives reason to consider non-Turkic elements in Teleut as aboriginal. The gene pool study of the Chulym Turks is expected to contribute to the issue of language history and Chulym Turkic lexicon which is etymologically vague from the Turkic viewpoint.     In the 9th century CE, a vast polity centered on the region of Angkor was taking shape in what is today Cambodia and Northeast Thailand. At this time the polity's inhabitants, the Khmers, began to see themselves as members of a community of territorial integrity and shared ethnic identity. This sense of belonging, enshrined in the polity's name, Kambujadesa (i.e., Cambodia) or "the land of the descendants of Kambu," represents one of the most remarkable local cultural innovations in Southeast Asian history. However, the history and implications of early Cambodian identity have thus far been largely overlooked. In this study I use the evidence from the Old Khmer and Sanskrit inscriptions to argue that Angkorian Cambodia (9th-15th centuries CE) was at its conceptual core an ethnic polity or a "nation"--an analytic category signifying, in Steven Grosby's words, an extensive "territorial community of nativity." The inscriptions of Cambodia's provincial elite suggest that the polity's autonomy and its people's common descent were widely disseminated ideals, celebrated in polity-wide myths and perpetuated in representations of the polity's foreign antagonists. I contend that this culture of territorial nativity contradicts the prevailing cosmological model of pre-modern politics in Southeast Asian studies, which assumes that polities before the 19th century were characterized by exaggerated royal claims to universal power and the absence of felt communities beyond extended family and religion. At the same time I seek to problematize standard historical accounts of the nation which fail to observe the affinity between territoriality and fictive kinship in select political cultures before the era of ideological nationalism.

    We studied avalanches of cohesionless granular materials down a rough inclined plane and overflowing a wall normal to the incoming flow and to the bottom. This paper focuses on the transient time-varying mean force exerted by the granular stream on the obstacle at various slope inclinations. A nearly triangular dead zone is formed upstream of the obstacle. It largely contributes to the overall force signal at low slope inclinations. It also drives the residual force corresponding to the avalanche tail until its standstill whatever the slope inclination. An analytical hydrodynamic model based on depth-averaged momentum conservation was successfully developed for steady-flow conditions to predict the steady-state force computed from discrete numerical simulations [Faug,Beguin,and Chanut, Phys. Rev. E 80, 021305 (2009)]. The basic equations of the model are briefly reviewed and adapted to transient time-varying flows. The modified hydrodynamic model quite accurately represents the force peak produced by the granular avalanche flows computed from discrete numerical simulations reported in previous studies. A fitting procedure is needed to represent the decrease of the force after the force peak, thus quantifying the different contributions to the mean force on the wall. We show that the weight of each contribution is largely dependent on the slope inclination.

    Knowledge of the convict period in New South Wales has been substantially expanded and enriched through a number of revisionist scholarly studies in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The cumulative result has been the establishment of a number of new orthodoxies. These studies have drawn on a number of analytic frameworks including feminism and cliometrics, successfully challenging the previous historiography. The rich archival sources in New South Wales have been utilised to reformulate the convict period by a number of scholars, demonstrating the complexity of life in the penal colony. Academic divisions between what are regarded as "Australian" history and "British" history have imposed their own agendas on writing about transportation. This study challenges. this imposition through an examination of petitioners' approaches to the home and colonial administrations. A lacuna in the scholarly studies has been a lack of attention to transportation's consequences for married couples and their children. This study seeks to narrow that gap through these petitions. The findings of the study demonstrate the continuation of links between those who were transported and those who remained in Britain. It is argued that these findings have important implications for future research within Britain, and that what is disclosed by these petitions and the individuals who were involved in on-going communications cannot be restricted either to Australian or convict histories. Our knowledge of what transportation meant to individuals in the periphery as well as those in the metropole is diminished if the focus remains firmly on the settler community. Supplementary material from contemporary sources as well as the official records passing between the two administrations has been utilised and these supplementary sources suggest that there was a broad qivision between official publicly stated policy and practice in respect of transportees' family circumstances. Chapter One establishes the architecture of the thesis and explains the methodology adopted. Chapter Two offers a reinterpretation of the colony's formation in 1788 and inserts the "convict audience" of that day into the historiography. Chapter Three examines two petitioners writing from different gaols in Britain prior to their expected transportation. A resolution of the division between cliometrics and this more qualitative humanist approach is proposed. Chapter Four is a study of petitioners in Britain and a study of the process required for a reunion and reconstitution of family units in New South Wales. Chapter Five seeks to a resiting of male convicts as family members through an examination of a number of contemporary sources. Chapter Six examines the petitions raised by husbands and fathers for their wives and families to be given free passages to the colony. Chapter Seven provides case studies of three transportees and their experiences of the petitioning process. In Chapter Eight the focus broadens out from married men to examine and provide a revision of convicts' correspondence with their relatives and friends in Britain. Such correspondence has previously provided the basis for nationalist interpretations; the revision here suggests that such interpretations are anachronistic. Chapter Nine is an extended metaphor drawing the material together to the conclusions of the study.

    Straipsnio objektas – šventi baltų miškeliai Lietuvoje. Straipsnyje formuluojama ir grindžiama idėja, kad senoji baltų religinė tradicija, susijusi su šventais miškeliais, vienokiu ar kitokiu pavidalu pasiekė ir šiuos laikus. Nepaisant to, kad daugelis senųjų miškelių realiai išnyko iš Lietuvos kraštovaizdžio, liko nemažai lingvistinių, folkloro bei istorinių šaltinių (XII - XVIII a.) duomenų, liudijančių tam tikrų konkrečių vietovių sąsajas su jose augusiomis šventomis giraitėmis. Ikikrikščioniškos baltų religinės tradicijos atspindžius taip pat galima matyti XXI amžių pasiekusiuose religiniuose veiksmuose, atliekamuose tam tikruose miškeliuose ar prie tam tikrų konkrečių medžių, taip pat šių laikų žodinėje folklorinėje tradicijoje, susijusioje su konkrečiomis Lietuvos vietovėmis. Straipsnyje atkreipiamas dėmesys į tai, kad šį šventųjų miškelių fenomeną tyrinėti ir buvusias senąsias šventvietes atrasti gali padėti tik kompleksinės mokslinės metodologijos naudojimas.Atskiras dėmesys straipsnyje skiriamas pastaraisiais metais tyrinėtų vietovių, susijusių su senaisiais šventais baltų miškeliais, pristatymui. Skirtingi šaltiniai leidžia teigti, kad su senaisiais šventaisiais baltų miškeliais, senosiomis kulto vietomis (alkavietėmis) gali būti siejama: 1) Gojus, esantis prie Kernavės (Širvintų raj.); 2) Gojus, esantis prie Elektrėnų; 3)vieta, vadinta „Šventos liepos“, esanti netoli Trakų; bei 4) netoli Maišiagalos (Vilniaus raj.) augęs miškelis, vadintas „Kukaviečiu“. The article deals with the sacred groves of the Balts in Lithuania and presents the linguistic background, the historical documents from the 12th-18th century, the key folklore motifs of the topic, as well as selected examples of groves. The article also discusses possible relationships between pre-Christian religious traditions connected with the sacred groves and the ones which have survived into the 21st century. Despite the fact that the sacred groves of past ages have mostly disappeared on the landscape, this tradition has not significantly changed. Various religious activities which were carried out in sacred groves, at smaller groups of trees, and beneath separate trees enable us to learn, even if insignificantly, about the phenomenon. Interdisciplinary approach to sacred groves should be preferred in modern research.

    Ebifananyi 4, based on the Ham Mukasa Foundation Archive that HIPUganda digitised, has had several exhibition versions. This one puts a strong emphasis on the works produced by Ugandan artists and Dutch and Ugandan art students for the project. In this other exhibition creating an opportunity to explore Mukasa’s stories through various images and objects was the lead. See this short film for thoughts on the translation of the title of Ham Mukasa’s book on the three Kings; Simuda Nyuma, and the Luganda word Ekifananyi by curator Robinah Nansubuga and Artist Nathan Omiel. Participating artists in this exhibition are Achola Rosario, Eria Nsubuga, Fred Mutebi, Ian Mwesiga, Lwanga Emmanuel, Nathan Omiel, Papa Shabani, Sanaa Gateja and Violet Nantume. The Ugandan students followed Eria Nsubuga’s painting course at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, while the Dutch students were part of an elective I taught under the name ‘Illustrating (for) others’ at Academy Minerva in Groningen.

    This collection of photographs was compiled as part of the MaltaPot project at the University of Malta. This project aims to enhance the understanding of pottery technology and provenancein Neolithic Malta, mainly dating to the Għar Dalam, Skorba (Early Neolithic), and Zebbuġ (Late Neolithic) phases. This collection presents sherds from the Għar Dalam phase, photographs, and microphotographs and lists their archaeological contexts and form. This collection was prepared thanks to the information from the National Museum of Archaeology (NMA), Malta, and the FRAGSUS project. The project used multiple techniques to characterise the pottery sherds, such as microscopy, polarised light microscope, X-Ray Fluorescence or X-Ray Diffraction. This collection presents the sherds which were not analysed using these destructive techniques, although they had a section ground flat for microphotography. Data collection was carried out between 2018-2020 by Dr Brogan. The document was compiled by 2023 Ms Richard-Trémeau. Photographs can be used if credited. This upload contains a PDF document and two zip files with the macroscopic photograph (Exterior surface) and the microphotographs.

    Professional (i.e. extra-academic) contract archaeology is an internationally widespread practice contributing significantly to the archaeology literature. However, professional knowledge production in archaeology, and most notably the professional report genre, is at times described as problematic. The problem descriptions are ambiguous and can be grouped under at least three different topics: concerns for content quality and practical accessibility, concerns for the comparably low degree of analytical and theoretical synthesizing in reports and concerns for lack of mutual knowledge transfer between academic archaeologists and professional archaeologists. Technical issues of access are to an increasing extent being solved. Format standardizations are also developing. Hence the report genre becomes more accessible, and the content more readable and informative. Yet articulations of attitudes toward the genre in archaeology text books and journal articles remain focused on the genre’s problems. The aim of my ongoing dissertation research is to nuance the understanding of the professional report genre in archaeology. I do so by analyzing factors shaping reporting as it takes place in the intersection between academic norms, professional values and market logics. I argue an improved genre understanding is crucial to diminish cultural issues of access to the report literature, and also as a basis for development of reporting practices. In the dissertation research I analyze (1) perceptions about the report genre in archaeology literature, (2) information policy regulating reporting in archaeology, (3) how report writers and county board professionals interpret the reporting and report auditing work tasks and (4) the frames of reference report writers bring into reporting. The aim of this paper is to explicate the research design consisting of four sub-studies, to briefly report on findings from study no. 4, and to discuss preliminary, partial results from study no. 2.

    15th International Conference Linguistic and Cultural Studies - Traditions and Innovations (LKTI) -- NOV 09-11, 2015 -- Tomsk, RUSSIA -- Natl Res Tomsk Polytechn Univ, Inst Power Engn, Dept Foreign Languages This study encourages a multidisciplinary research to identify parallels in the group belonging and chronology of South Siberian Turkic (Chulym Turkic and Bachat Teleut) and Yakut. There is solid evidence that the ancestors of modern Yakuts and their language originate from the Central Asian steppe Proto-Turkic community of the 1st century BC. South Siberian Turkic varieties have not been studied as thoroughly, but they are expected to have traces of some non-Turkic language substratum. The analysis of the Teleut gene pool has revealed two different components of the Turkic and non-Turkic nature, which gives reason to consider non-Turkic elements in Teleut as aboriginal. The gene pool study of the Chulym Turks is expected to contribute to the issue of language history and Chulym Turkic lexicon which is etymologically vague from the Turkic viewpoint.     In the 9th century CE, a vast polity centered on the region of Angkor was taking shape in what is today Cambodia and Northeast Thailand. At this time the polity's inhabitants, the Khmers, began to see themselves as members of a community of territorial integrity and shared ethnic identity. This sense of belonging, enshrined in the polity's name, Kambujadesa (i.e., Cambodia) or "the land of the descendants of Kambu," represents one of the most remarkable local cultural innovations in Southeast Asian history. However, the history and implications of early Cambodian identity have thus far been largely overlooked. In this study I use the evidence from the Old Khmer and Sanskrit inscriptions to argue that Angkorian Cambodia (9th-15th centuries CE) was at its conceptual core an ethnic polity or a "nation"--an analytic category signifying, in Steven Grosby's words, an extensive "territorial community of nativity." The inscriptions of Cambodia's provincial elite suggest that the polity's autonomy and its people's common descent were widely disseminated ideals, celebrated in polity-wide myths and perpetuated in representations of the polity's foreign antagonists. I contend that this culture of territorial nativity contradicts the prevailing cosmological model of pre-modern politics in Southeast Asian studies, which assumes that polities before the 19th century were characterized by exaggerated royal claims to universal power and the absence of felt communities beyond extended family and religion. At the same time I seek to problematize standard historical accounts of the nation which fail to observe the affinity between territoriality and fictive kinship in select political cultures before the era of ideological nationalism.
