Abstract This article examines the transformation of the Serbian media landscape over the last two decades, by applying four analytical categories developed for identifying levels of media capture in different national contexts (Dragomir 2019). Implementation of diachronic document analysis provides rich descriptions of the media regulatory capture, grip over public service broadcasters, misuse of state advertising and project-based financing of media content, as well as endurance of state media ownership. Therefore, this study identifies some of the reasons behind recent decline of media freedoms in Serbia, adds elements for finding the right place for Serbia on the map of Central and Eastern European post-communist media transformations, and contributes to the growing literature aimed at understanding media capture in its many forms and variations across the globe.

We explored links between competitive authoritarianism and populism in Serbia under Vučić via mixed methods. We conducted a quantitative content analysis of 228 political cartoons (2013–2017) by Dušan Petričić, a leading cartoonist and government critic, and qualitative visual and contextual analysis of four cartoons that reflected key themes—media freedom violations, unfair political competition, and populist and abusive rule. We found that populism appeared as the ‘soft’ face of competitive authoritarianism, tolerable to domestic audiences and acceptable to influential international actors because of its reliance on more informal and sophisticated and less repressive forms of authoritarian manipulation.

Abstract The current study aims to demonstrate that trading card games (TCGs), also called collectible card games (CCGs), represent a potentially fruitful area of research in metaphor studies. A popular trading card game called Yu-Gi-Oh! is examined, and the argument is made that players utilize the cognitive mechanisms of conceptual metaphor to conceptualize its core game mechanics. Based on the results of a survey (n = 186) it was concluded that players conceptualize such game mechanics in line with the logics inherent in the Location Event Structure Metaphor, in conjunction with the metaphors birth is arrival, life is being present here, and death is departure. This implies that it is precisely the embodied cognitive mechanisms of conceptual metaphor which allow for a shared, intersubjective understanding between players to exist regarding the meanings of various gameplay scenarios in Yu-Gi-Oh!, and possibly in many other trading card games as well.

AbstractThis paper presents a brief history of Yugoslav psychology and a review of the current state of psychological research and practice in the former Yugoslav countries. Bibliometric mapping was used to explore the knowledge domain and international visibility of psychological research in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Judging by the number of papers visible in Scopus, psychological research activity in these countries is similar to the other former communist countries. In a relative sense, it is even higher in Slovenia and Croatia. However, psychologists still rely heavily on national journals indexed in Scopus when publishing their papers. Regarding psychological practice, former Yugoslav countries are facing challenges that are more or less typical for all small countries in the global scientific and economic market. Keeping in mind all the obstacles and traumas in the past decades, it should be considered a success that psychology in the former Yugoslav countries is now a fully established profession and a recognized scientific discipline.

AbstractGiven the scanty and inadequate studies on Serbia's growth performance before the First World War, this paper presents production‐side GDP estimates for Serbia for six years between 1867 and 1910. It probes into the growth dynamics, assessing convergence with the more developed countries of north‐western Europe, as well as progress towards achieving modern economic growth. Although the economy showed some dynamism in terms of overall GDP, per capita GDP in pre‐First World War Serbia grew by only 0.28 per cent per annum, as much of the overall GDP growth was eroded by rapid population growth. Far from converging with north‐western Europe, Serbia continued to fall behind. Sluggish structural transformation and slow income per capita growth suggest that Serbia's transition to modern economic growth was in its infancy. Growth in the dominant agricultural sector was extensive, driven by expanding arable land and population growth. Land was affordable and easy to obtain; hence, peasants invested little in new technologies. Meanwhile, the modern industrial and service sectors were below a threshold that could sustain rapid growth. Nevertheless, this study also highlights the rapid expansion of a small modern sector and export diversification that reflected emergent ‘green shoots’ in 1905–10.

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA Eurasian loess-paleosol sequences provide continuous records of global change in mid-latitude Northern Eurasia. The loess-paleosol sequence of West Siberia located in the central part of the mid-latitude Eurasian loess belt extending from West Europe to Yakutia is an outstanding paleoclimate archive in Northern Asia. The stratigraphy has been best documented on the left bank of the Ob River, in the so-called Ob Loess Plateau. This study focuses on the stratigraphy of the most complete Middle-Late Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequence at the Belovo section. The suggested high-resolution model of the Belovo Late Pleistocene stratigraphy is based on magnetic and sedimentological proxies and is correlated with other Eurasian loess records and with the global marine δ18O stratigraphy. The enviromagnetic signal at Belovo Loess-paleosol sequences shows a transitional pattern comparable with both typical Eurasian loess magnetic records. Detailed paleopedological interpretations of the magnetic and sedimentological data from the Belovo section have important implications for appropriate linking different Late Pleistocene climates and environments of other the well-known Eurasian loess provinces.

Four new complexes of copper(II) with S,O-tetradentate ligands, derivatives of thiosalicylic acid, encompassing an ethylene-, propylene-, butylene- and pentylene- bridge, were synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, molecular conductance and infrared (IR) spectra. The structures were assumed based on the previously mentioned analyses and confirmed with the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. This article sheds light on the status of migrants and asylum seekers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the state response to the growing challenges in the area of acceptance and protection, following the transformation of the Balkan Migration Route. This shift has caught state-level governmental institutions and local communities unprepared, with high numbers of migrants and refugees stranded upon its territory. A special focus was paid to the Bihać and Velika Kladuša municipalities in Una-Sana Canton, in the northwest of the country, and the ways in which they responded to this situation, in particular the ‘archipelago’ of official and makeshift camps that play a fundamental role in managing migration flows. In order to gain an insight into the problem being analyzed, the methodology applied was primarily based on participant observation and interviews, together with desk research of existing reports and media coverage in different stages of the crisis. The evidence suggests that the unique political infrastructure created after the 1990s has given rise to myriad institutional weaknesses and insufficient coordination between state-level and local authorities in the efforts to prevent a humanitarian emergency.
