ABSTRACT This thesis describes the investigation carried out during the development of guidelines for dendrochronological sampling in listed church buildings in Sweden. Dendrochronology is a dating method of historic timber and wood material developed during the 20th century and applied in building archaeology in Sweden since the 1970s. Recent years the way the method is being used have gotten more and more criticised from the heritage sector. Heritage officers in Church of Sweden and buildings researchers argue that a non-functional practise in this filed is problematic. The main problem areas pointed out are over sampling and non-functional systems for archiving samples and communicating results. This together have led to the situation that medieval churches today are being sampled once again. Often in the same timber as previous, because the old samples are not traceable for re-analyse. There is also a low awareness about the international charters and principles concerning how work is supposed to be carried out in heritage buildings. This thesis investigates these problems, and how they have evolved, by describing the different theoretical contexts for heritage preservation, the Swedish Heritage conservation act and the general aspects of dendrochronology today in listed church buildings. The development of non-invasive sampling methods is promoted and discussed. Thru a literature review and a comparison with six guidelines for dendrochronological sampling, a study of the application of the method in buildings is presented. The investigation points out important aspects to stress in a guideline. They are: an initial building historical investigation, the competences of the samplers, to investigate if non-invasive methods can be used instead, the importance of archiving the samples in public accessible archives and finally to scientifically publish results and data. The author concludes that a new sub-division in dendrochronology needs to be developed for heritage buildings, and suggests that it could be called heritage dendro. The objective of this thesis is to create a Natural Language Processing Model for the Maltese Language. The ultimate goal is that the model would be able to recognise syntactical features, that is the linguistic features and the relationship of a sequence of words, in Maltese. The performance and accuracy of the Maltese model is compared with the models of languages that have great influence on the Maltese language. The results outputted by the dependency parser were linguistically analysed to provide in depth analysis of the results outputted during training and testing. The model is tested on unseen text to provide a further understanding of the level of accuracy of the machine learning algorithm. For this syntax annotator, the model created is trained on manually annotated data and then the output is syntax data that is processed by the dependency parser and part-of- speech tagger. This model is made using the Python package spaCy. Since every language is unique, the linguistic rules are evaluated, to teach the model the rules of the language being researched. The MUDTv1 corpus developed by Slavomír Céplö for his Phd Thesis is used to train this model. The results show that the Maltese syntax model had a 91% part-of-speech tag accuracy, 74% unlabelled attachment score and 66% labelled attachment score. The model is further tested on unseen non-annotated text, the tag accuracy is 75% and the tokeniser accuracy is 99%.

Even though Sweden has been one of the leading countries in the development of nearsurface geophysics instrumentation and practices, geophysical surveys in archaeology are not commonly used in Sweden. However, it is becoming increasingly popular, especially the use of ground-penetrating radar and metal detectors. Therefore, it is of great interest to investigate the usability of other geophysical methods for accurately describing the archaeological potential. This study aims at comparing resistivity and magnetic gradiometry to previous ground-penetrating radar measurements and archaeological excavations. The study area is located in Lödöse, South-West Sweden, which was once one of the most important cities in medieval Sweden. The surveys were made over the Monastery Hill, where a Dominican monastery and an older church are located beneath the surface. This study is showing that clearer images are given from the GPR measurements, but additional features can be seen in the resistivity results. The magnetic gradiometry does not show any structures that can easily be compared to the GPR and resistivity but shows another structure that does not appear in the other two surveys. The resistivity and gradiometry surveys are also used to interpret the material of the archaeological features as well as the surrounding geology. All in all, the different methods have different pros and cons and illuminate different archaeological features in the subsurface. Used together, they can give an unsurpassed information source, short of excavation only.

Near-surface geophysics is a well established method for mapping the geological conditions in the subsurface. The use of geophysics is also a commonly used method in archaeological surveys, although traditionally not as much in Sweden. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is however gaining more popularity and is arguably the most used method in archaeology due to the amount of data that can be gathered in a short amount of time and with little effort. This study was done mostly with GPR together with a resistivity and induced polarization (IP) survey with the aim to compare the methods with each other. Data gathered with the GPR can be visualised in 2D and 3D and it is therefore of great interest to compare these data forms. The study area is located in Lödöse, SW Sweden, which was one of the most important cities in medieval Sweden. The survey presented in this thesis was done over the former courtyard and outer bailey of a castle with a triple moat system once called Lödösehus. Today there are no visible remains of this castle and only a small part of the outer bailey has been excavated. The 3D GPR data showed previously excavated structures along with two larger, previously undiscovered structures. The 2D GPR data showed reflections from two of the moats and identified anomalies in the 3D data as postholes and structures. The resistivity survey potentially identified an unexcavated moat and showed that the top 5 meters of the soil has unusually high resistivity values for clay. This indicates a high degree of leaching of salts or thick deposits of anthropogenic waste which could explain the exceptional penetration depth with the GPR in an area of clay. The IP survey showed an area of electrical chargeability in connection to the potential moat that was found in the resistivity survey, indicating the possibility of metallic objects in the area. This study has greatly increased the archaeological knowledge of Lödösehus and provides exact locations of previously excavated structures. Furthermore, new areas of interest have been identified for future excavation in order to learn more about the history of one of the largest cities in medieval Sweden.

There are many places in Sweden with the prefix ‘bride’ in their name. Oftentimes there are legends associated with these places. The legends often involve a bride who died, or a bridal procession where turmoil erupted resulting in the death of one or more members of the party. One such place is Brudfjället (the ‘Bride Mountain’ direct translation) in Dalsland, Sweden, which is also surrounded by a legend of a deceased bride. This essay investigates the cultural heritage related to Brudfjället in Dalsland, as well as if, and how, place names with the prefix ‘Bride’ and their narrative has a place making function. The investigation is performed partly through a questionnaire study and partly through archive studies. It is found that place names with the prefix ‘Bride’ in general, and the place name Brudfjället in particular, has a place making function for those who already know the place. This phenomenon occurs through the place’s narrative which gives an explanation to the place’s name. The thesis investigates a city street, Borganäsvägen in the city of Borlänge Sweden and how traces, as palimpsest, memories and stories in and of the urban landscape can be a part of building the cultural heritage of the street. The urban landscape is researched with the idea of palimpsest as a mental tool to find traces left behind from the past that can tell stories of the history of the street and possibly also affects the use of and look on this landscape today. The written history of the street is investigated to se what has previously been told of history and memories regarding this urban room. The written history seem to originate from the same few sources and tell a correct but narrow and fixed story of the city and the street. The question is asked if there could be different stories found about this street that would create an alternative narrative and help redefine the cultural heritage of this urban landscape. A local facebook page is used to find personal stories and memories of Borganäsvägen. These personal stories are, as discovered, not a part of the usual narrative of Borganäsvägen and opens up new possibilities of interpretation. The european landscape convention (ELC) is ratified by the swedish government and thus the formal local planning documents concerning the street are investigated to see if the ELC is used as mentioned as a tool for defining the landscape from the viewpoint of its inhabitants. The conclusion shows that there are possibilities for alternative stories through different perspectives, as the use of social media, the idea of a more human-centered built environment from Wells & Stiefel (2018) and the convention text of ELC opens up new possibilities for defining our landscapes and the cultural heritage they create. This study is about the knowledge of driving and working with working horses and how this knowledge could be considered as an intangible cultural heritage. Today, the knowledge on how to work with horses, as well as the number of Swedish work horses, are decreasing and needs to be protected for the future. The convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was formed and confirmed in 2003 by UNESCO. The purpose of the convention is to protect and raise awareness of the importance of the listed intangible cultural heritage. In Sweden, the convention was confirmed in 2011 and is now coordinated by the government agency the Institute for Language and Folklore, where anyone can suggest new subjects to be part of the Swedish list of its intangible cultural heritage. By looking at horse driving and its history, present and future, this study has evaluated in which way it can be considered as intangible cultural heritage. Two methods were used: interviews and documentation. Four professional horse drivers were interviewed. The purpose was to explain how these people work with their horses, how they have learned to drive horses, if they use traditional or modern methods and tools and why they would consider horse driving to be an intangible cultural heritage. To further the understanding of horse driving a documentation was made with the horse driver Siri Berg, who works at the cultural reserve Gunnebo slott. Photos and text were used to document the craftmanship and knowledge of horse driving. There is an ignorance and preconception about horse driving, as it is said to be uneconomic, time consuming and outdated compared to mechanical methods. The results show the opposite, that horse driving is both traditional, modern, in some cases more economical and fits into society's requirements as a sustainable method when it comes to climate change and ecological solutions that promote biodiversity Uppsats för avläggande av filosofie kandidatexamen med huvudområdet kulturvård med inriktning mot landskapsvård 2021, 180 hp

Gårda is an area, east of the central part of Gothenburg. It is a district with an industrial background from the 19th century with factories and working-class homes from that era still standing today. The area has seen several changes to its environment over the years, especially office buildings have become a large and important part of Gårdas character and environment. This essay will study the phenomenon gentrification and study how Gårda fits in its description and theory. To be able to understand Gårda in a gentrification process three other gentrified areas will be studied and analyzed. These districts are: Old town in Stockholm, for being one of the earliest gentrified environments in Sweden. Second is East Kvillebäcken in Gothenburg, which was and small-scale industrial area and was torn down around 2007 to make space for a new and modern residential area. The last district is Haga in Gothenburg, a very classical case of gentrification where they wanted to tear down an old and run-down part of town but were met with lots of resistance from the residents who did not want to move. This information will then later be compared to Gårda and similarities and differences will be discussed. This essay will focus on the theory and process of gentrification and its effect on the surrounding environment. Also, what kind of background the process was based upon and how it came to be. The method will mostly be based on literature studies and qualitative interviews to gain different aspects and competences on the subject. Lastly the essay will discuss the different changes happening in and around Gårda and how that can come to affect the cultural values in the district. This thesis aims to increase the knowledge on how inhabitants of the Öckerö municipality values their existing ferry connection and why, as well as to find out whether a fixed connection will affect their sense of place. This can then serve as a helpful resource for the conservation practices of cultural heritage in understanding the function of the regular sea traffic in the cultural landscape. The survey shows that the existing connection is significant to the inhabitants perception of local sense of place through aspects associated to security and community, as well as the perceived unique traits of the municipality. The survey also verifies existing research in certain areas, such as the experienced sense of a valuable specific island culture whose protection could be attributed in great extent to the existence of the ferry connection. Part of the experienced cultural value of the ferry connection is related to complex societal issues regarding acceptance and exclusion, but it also holds a historical value which could be a question for the conservation practices of cultural heritage to consider in the preservation of cultural heritage for posterity Uppsats för avläggande av filosofie kandidatexamen med huvudområdet kulturvård med inriktning mot bebyggelseantikvarisk verksamhet 2021, 180 hp Grundnivå 2021:21

The Care And Maintenance Of Your Uncertain Movement explores how words formulate a dance based artistic practice and the uncertainty in the words to reflect critically. This text is about seeking where the research intrinsically is in an artistic process, as an artistic process is a collection of many things. That is, what the skills of an artist is, and where the references are. It is about the necessity of making substance and making sense for it to become a substantial research. This is a subjective document that through itself attempts to touch upon what translating a movement based practice into a writing practice does to movement and to the artistic process. It is a critique to what it means to be subjective in text which requires other skills than skills obtained when training performative art. It is a critique to what is read as subjective, compared to what is subjectively perceived as subjective. It is about how the academic context affects creative process, thinking and production of the practical.
