The paper introduces an ecosystem of digital libraries and mobile applications for presenting Bulgarian cultural and science assets. The digital libraries concerned constitute valuable sources of cultural heritage and related scientific results. They include the Bulgarian Iconographical Digital Library (BIDL), the BellKnow multimedia archive on bells and the web site of the International Conference on Digital Presentation and Preservation of Cultural and Scientific Heritage (DIPP). These digital libraries can be accessed online through a Web interface. Due to the spread of mobile devices, there is a need to present the contents through mobile platforms as well. The GUIDE@HAND application family was integrated with the digital libraries for presenting the cultural and scientific assets offline in mobile applications. Interactive multimedia components (e. g., games, panorama pictures, maps etc.) make the presentation more attractive. The developed mobile applications facilitate learning, presentation and preservation of cultural and scientific objects.

Статията разглежда аспектите на съдебната археология. Читателят се запознава с дефинирането на различните термини, които са необходими за задълбочено проучване на поставения въпрос. Термини като: археология, съдебна археология, полева археология и антропология се определят в статията. Три различни археологични техники се разглеждат детайлно, като се набляга на техния произход, нужното оборудване и адаптациите, през които те преминават, когато са поставени в контекста на съдебната археология. Дискусията в тази статия е фокусирана както върху връзката между дисциплините - съдебна археология и съдебна антропология, така и върху възможността да се комбинират двете специалности в професионалната кариера на един и същ специалист. This paper explores the aspects of Forensic Archaeology. The reader is familiarized with the definitions of terms needed for the thorough exploration of the question. Terms such as archaeology, forensic, forensic archaeology, and field archaeology have been considered. Furthermore, three archaeological techniques are explored in detail, with focus on their origins, equipment and adaptations, when introduced in a forensic context. A discussion on the relationship between the disciplines of forensic archaeology and anthropology is also provided preceding the assessment of the limitations of combining the two disciplines in one person’s career.

The article briefly presents the results achieved by the PhD project R-1875 “Search in Art Image Collections Based on Colour Semantics”, Hasselt University, which finished successfully. The main goals of this work were to provide a detailed analysis of the colour theories, especially on existing interconnections in successful colour combinations, as well as to formalize them in order to implement automated extraction from digitized artworks. This article presents the principal results of the Ph.D. thesis A Novel Method for Content-Based Image Retrieval in Art Image Collections Utilizing Colour Semantics by Krassimira Ivanova (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, BAS), successfully defended at Hasselt Uni-versity in Belgium, Faculty of Science, on 15 November 2011.

The fractional calculus (FC) is an area of intensive research and development. In a previous paper and poster we tried to exhibit its recent state, surveying the period of 1966-2010. This paper presents a novel approach that relies on the innovative idea of reason-able view of the Web of linked data applied to the domain of cultural heritage. We describe an application of data integration based on semantic web technologies and the methods necessary to create an integrated semantic knowledge base composed of real museum data that are interlinked with data from the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud. Thus, creating an infrastructure to allow for easy extension of the domain specific data, and convenient querying of multiple datasets. Our approach is based on a model of schema level and an instance level alignment. The models use several ontologies, e.g. PROTON and CIDOC-CRM, showing their integration by using real data from the Gothenburg City Museum.

We present a method for automatic generation of sentiment aware lexicon based on 500’000 recent online user reviews about restaurants and hotels. The experiments include an implementation of a web crawler, part of speech tagger, and an algorithm for sentiment analysis and expansion of the lexicon. The experiments are focused on the domain of restaurant and hotel reviews, which offers a large set of relatively simply and short texts that are also self-tagged by their authors and limited to a set of topics like service, food quality, ambience, etc. We found out that the area is prominent for building and testing machine learning algorithms for opinion mining and sentiment analysis and this is proven by our results which achieve and accuracy of up to 88%. The research is based on very recent consumer generated data.

This paper is a reflection on the history and future of technology-enhanced learning. Over the last century various new technologies were introduced in education. Often, educational revolutions were proclaimed. Unfortunately, most of these new technologies failed to meet the high expectations. This paper reviews the rise and fall of various "revolutionary" learning technologies and analyses what went wrong. Three main driving factors are identified that influence the educational system: 1) educational practice, 2) educational research, and 3) educational technology. The role and position of these factors is elaborated and critically reviewed. Today, again many promising new technologies are being put in place for learning: gaming, social web, and mobile technologies, for example. Inevitably, these are once again proclaimed by its supporters to revolutionise teaching and learning. The paper concludes with identifying a number of relevant factors that substantiate a favourable future outlook of technology-enhanced learning.
