    Authors: Francesca Privitera;

    In 1932 Giovanni Michelucci visited Pompeii and Ercolano. The experience of the archaeological site played a key role in the development of Michelucci as an architect. The deepest sense of that lesson learnt in his youth resurfaced after 1944. Involved as he was in the debate on reconstruction, for Michelucci the inseparable relation between society and the city revealed by the remains at Pompeii was an unavoidable inspiration. The writings and designs submitted for the reconstruction of the Ponte Vecchio area (1944-1945) converge towards a new urban vision, one where the memory of the past is distilled in its deepest components and substantiated in the present. The Sumatran subduction zone exhibits strong seismic and tsunamogenic potential with the prominent examples of the 2004, 2005 and 2007 earthquakes. Here, we invert travel-time data of local earthquakes for vp and vp∕vs velocity models of the central Sumatran forearc. Data were acquired by an amphibious seismometer network consisting of 52 land stations and 10 ocean-bottom seismometers located on a segment of the Sumatran subduction zone that had not ruptured in a great earthquake since 1797 but witnessed recent ruptures to the north in 2005 (Nias earthquake, Mw = 8.7) and to the south in 2007 (Bengkulu earthquake, Mw = 8.5). The 2-D and 3-D vp velocity anomalies reveal the downgoing slab and the sedimentary basins. Although the seismicity pattern in the study area appears to be strongly influenced by the obliquely subducting Investigator Fracture Zone to at least 200 km depth, the 3-D velocity model shows prevailing trench-parallel structures at depths of the plate interface. The tomographic model suggests a thinned crust below the basin east of the forearc islands (Nias, Pulau Batu, Siberut) at ∼ 180 km distance to the trench. vp velocities beneath the magmatic arc and the Sumatran fault zone (SFZ) are around 5 km s−1 at 10 km depth and the vp∕vs ratios in the uppermost 10 km are low, indicating the presence of felsic lithologies typical for continental crust. We find moderately elevated vp∕vs values of 1.85 at ∼ 150 km distance to the trench in the region of the Mentawai Fault. vp∕vs ratios suggest an absence of large-scale alteration of the mantle wedge and might explain why the seismogenic plate interface (observed as a locked zone from geodetic data) extends below the continental forearc Moho in Sumatra. Reduced vp velocities beneath the forearc basin covering the region between the Mentawai Islands and the Sumatra mainland possibly reflect a reduced thickness of the overriding crust.

    Authors: Luca Degl'Innocenti;

    Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, chivalric romances were much loved in Italy, both in popular and in learned contexts, and were one of the bestselling genres in the nascent printed book trade. Although traditional blockbusters and brand-new poems alike typically refer to the oral performance of a poet-singer, literary scholars tend to evaluate those references as part of a rhetorical strategy of fictive orality, as literary clichés derived from a performing practice supposedly confined to earlier periods. Nevertheless, upon closer inspection, many authors and texts prove to be linked with real oral performances. Several chivalric poems, in particular, were surely composed, sung, and even improvised by street singers, who also played a very active role in printing and selling them. The paper aims to survey the most relevant evidence, thus reassessing the importance of orality in fostering and disseminating one of the prominent literary genres of Renaissance Italy Journal of Early Modern Studies, Vol 7 (2018)

    International audience; This paper presents the results of the SHREC'18 track: Retrieval of gray patterns depicted on 3D models. The task proposed in the contest challenges the possibility of retrieving surfaces with the same texture pattern of a given query model. This task, which can be seen as a simplified version of many real world applications, requires a characterization of the surfaces based on local features, rather then considering the surface size and/or bending. All runs submitted to this track are based on feature vectors. The retrieval performances of the runs submitted for evaluation reveal that texture pattern retrieval is a challenging issue. Indeed, a good balance between the size of the pattern and the dimension of the region around a vertex used to locally analyze the color evolution is crucial for pattern description.

    This study investigates phonological translation and spelling adjustment as linguistic phenomena in the translation of English medical terms into Indonesian. It aims at identifying the phonological translation and describing spelling adjustment taking place in English-Indonesian medical terms translation. Here, phonological adaptation is specifically discussed to demonstrate the translation of the English terms that are, then, adopted into the Indonesian language through the adjustment of pronunciation. The adjustment can be clearly seen through the comparison of the phonemic transcription of each term. Meanwhile, spelling adjustment presents the adaptation of writing system in accordance with the phonological translation. In Indonesian, the spelling system of the foreign adopted terms is standardized in the Indonesian guidance of term formation. The data are taken from the translation of six selected articles from a medical textbook, General Ophthalmology (2008) that is translated into Oftalmologi Umum (2013). The results demonstrate that phonological translation does occur in the process of translating the English medical terms into Indonesian and the spelling adjustment includes the writing of affix, vowel, vowel combination, vowel-consonant combination as well as consonant combination.

    Authors: Md Monirul Islam; Subhajit Das;

    The history of English travel narratives reveals that its origin and development is closely linked to the British encounter with the colonial ‘other.’ In the ‘golden age’ of European navigation and discovery travel narratives emerged in England in an effort to familiarise the unknown and the strange. Once the initial mapping was done by the navigators, travellers, artists and explorers went to the newly discovered territories and narrated the natural as well as the ethnographic conditions they observed there. Such travel narratives undoubtedly had a role in advancing the colonial and the imperial agenda, though simultaneously, they influenced the growth of modern form of tourism during the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century. William Hodges was the first European landscape painter to visit India. During his stay in India (1780-85) he travelled extensively and made several sketches for his paintings, forty eight of which were completed and published between 1785 and 1788 as Select Views of India. A few years later he wrote Travels in India, During the Years 1780, 1781, 1782, & 1783 (1793). The present article aims to explore how Hodges exceeds his artistic self and becomes an apologist for the emerging British Empire in India.

    This study aimed at investigating the techniques employed in translating sea incantation texts from Malay into English as well as describing the translation quality in view of its accuracy. To this end, four Malay incantation texts were gathered from informants in one village, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatera Province. Five translators from different ethnics were involved in this research to translate the four sea incantation texts. In order to measure the quality of their translation, five native English speakers took part in assessing the accuracy level of each translated text. The accuracy of translation is classified into three, namely: very accurate translation, accurate translation and inaccurate translation. Two findings were revealed in this study: 1). that the most dominant technique applied by the translators is literal technique 2) the accuracy of translation is affected by translator’s cultural background. It was discovered that translators with Malay descendant understood the source text easily, and to some extent translated the target text accurately. As for other translators whose culture is not Malay, failed to translate the text accurately and the translators have no sufficient cultural knowledge of the source text. Thus, the translated versions are not readable and accepted.

    Authors: Hieronymus Purwanta;

    This article examined the discourse about the 1965‘s bloody coup. The study was motivated by the controversy that has long been grown in Indonesian society about who is the mastermind of the incident. The problem studied is what kind of discourse about the 1965‘s bloody coup taught to high school students? The method used was discourse analysis to the content of high school history textbook from Indonesia New Order era (1966-1998) to Reformation era (1998-now). The results show that in the New Order era, history textbooks produced a discourse that Indonesia Communist Party was the antagonistic mastermind of the 1965‘s bloody coup. On the other hand, the Army and Major General Soeharto were the protagonistic heroes. In Reformation era, history textbooks produced a discourse that there were many interpretations toward the mastermind of the bloody coup. But the discourse was strongly protested by interest groups outside of the school.

    0px; "> Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is best-known as a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in many cardiovascular diseases. During vascular calcification, TNF-α has been reported topromote osteogenic differentiation of human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In contrast, there is alack of data reporting the osteoinductive effect of TNF-α in endothelial cell. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate and determine theoptimum dose of TNF-α that induces expression of the osteoinductive factor bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2) in endothelial cells. Human vein endothelial cells were treated with TNF-α at doses of 0, 2, 5, 10, or 20 ng/mL for2, 8, or 24 h time intervals. BMP-2 cell expression was evaluated using immunocytochemistry staining by calculating the percentage of BMP-2 positive cells. Apoptosiswas determined by counting the number ofpyknoticcells. In this study, we found that the optimum dose of TNF-α thatinduces BMP-2 expression in endothelial cells was 5 ng/mL at the 8 h time interval. Lower (2 ng/mL) orhigher (10 and 20 ng/mL) concentrations of TNF-α had minimal effects on BMP-2 expression. Moreover, higher concentrations of TNF-α treatment (10 and 20 ng/ml) at8 h and 24 h increased the presence of pyknotic endothelial cells, which representthefinal stage of apoptosis.

    https://pacificarchaeology.org/index.php/journal/article/view/126; International audience; Archaeological research in the Liang Abu rock shelter (East Kalimantan) led to the discovery and analysis of a pot-tery assemblage including red-slipped, cord-marked and incised pottery sherds, radiocarbon dated to 1672 ± 21 BP and 1524 ± 22 BP. In order to discuss our findings we undertake a reappraisal of the pottery material and associated radiocarbon dates from archaeological sites on Borneo Island, which provide us with an appropriate framework for a comparative analysis. This allows us to to include the inland region of Kalimantan in the technological network of Neolithic Island South East Asia.

    Authors: Francesca Privitera;

    Authors: Luca Degl'Innocenti;

    Authors: Hieronymus Purwanta;
